Michigan courts brace for jury trials to start again after pandemic creates massive backlog

The suspect, Shaquille Harris, 28, arrested in Texas five weeks after the April 28, 2019, slaying, has trial set for May – more than two years later.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, jury trials in state courts in Michigan have, with a few exceptions, been on hold for nearly a year. The backlog is expected to take years to clear in some counties.
