CHERRY VALLEY — Authorities have made an arrest in a Valentine's Day shooting outside CherryVale Mall, saying the entire incident was captured on security video.
Marquise D. Caldwell, 31, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and as an armed habitual criminal. The later charge is based on two previous convictions for illegal gun possession, Winnebago County State's Attorney J. Hanley said.
Village Police Chief Roy Bethge and Sheriff Gary Caruana joined Hanley Thursday at a news conference at an upper-level common area in mall where the charges against Caldwell were announced.
The very public display was a clear message to anyone walking by that violence will not be tolerated in the mall.
