CHERRY VALLEY Authorities have made an arrest in a Valentine s Day shooting outside CherryVale Mall, saying the entire incident was captured on security video.
Marquise D. Caldwell, 31, is charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and as an armed habitual criminal. The later charge is based on two previous convictions for illegal gun possession, Winnebago County State s Attorney J. Hanley said.
Village Police Chief Roy Bethge and Sheriff Gary Caruana joined Hanley Thursday at a news conference at an upper-level common area in mall where the charges against Caldwell were announced.
The very public display was a clear message to anyone walking by that violence will not be tolerated in the mall.
CHERRY VALLEY Police are investigating after shots were fired Sunday afternoon outside of the Macy s department store at the CherryVale Mall.
Cherry Valley Police Chief Roy Bethge said no one was injured and numerous shell casings were recovered outside of Macy s.
No arrests have been made.
In addition to Cherry Valley, officers from the Rockford police and Winnebago County sheriff s departments responded to numerous reports of shots fired about 12:50 p.m. We don t know the reason for the shooting or what was involved, Bethge said. We re currently investigating, reviewing videos and interviewing witnesses.
It was not immediately known how many shooters were involved.
