CLINTON — The person who was shot and killed Sunday by a Sampson County sheriff's deputy was identified Monday as a man who was involved in a chase that started in Cumberland County about seven hours before the shooting a news release from the Sampson County Sheriff's Office said Monday.
Craig Locklear, 49, of Laurel Lake Campground, was shot and killed by a deputy from the Sampson County Sheriff's Office around 1:09 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Lakewood School Road and Laurel Lake Road after Locklear aimed a .357 Magnum revolver at the deputy, the release said. 
Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office asked Sampson County deputies to help with a vehicle pursuit, the release said. A white van that state Division of Motor Vehicle records show is registered to Locklear was going into Sampson County from Cumberland County on N.C. 24, , it said.
