Man killed in Sampson County officer-involved shooting identified

CLINTON The person who was shot and killed Sunday by a Sampson County sheriff s deputy was identified Monday as a man who was involved in a chase that started in Cumberland County about seven hours before the shooting a news release from the Sampson County Sheriff s Office said Monday. Craig Locklear, 49, of Laurel Lake Campground, was shot and killed by a deputy from the Sampson County Sheriff s Office around 1:09 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Lakewood School Road and Laurel Lake Road after Locklear aimed a .357 Magnum revolver at the deputy, the release said.  Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office asked Sampson County deputies to help with a vehicle pursuit, the release said. A white van that state Division of Motor Vehicle records show is registered to Locklear was going into Sampson County from Cumberland County on N.C. 24, , it said. 

2 Roseboro children killed in fire, 1 hurt trying to save them

The Associated Press ROSEBORO Two 3-year-olds were killed and a 12-year-old was injured trying to rescue them from a fire in a North Carolina mobile home, officials said. News outlets report that the fire broke out Friday morning in Roseboro. The 3-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl died and a 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with severe cuts from trying to break a window to save the younger children, the Sampson County Sheriff s Office said.  A smoke detector woke the the children s parents, allowing them to escape, but couldn t get to the two children at the other end of the home, the sheriff s office said. A sheriff s deputy who was the first at the scene attempted a rescue, but the structure was engulfed in flames. The two younger children were found in the bedroom they shared.
