With the start of the school year just days away, the numbers of children coming down with COVID-19 are spiking.
The Louisiana Department of Health has reported the highest-ever weekly coronavirus case count for children under the age of 5. For children ages 5-17, the Department of Health documented their largest jump in cases yet.
For the week of July 15-21, Northeast Louisiana recorded 66 coronavirus cases for the under-5 age group, a spike from the previous week's reported 27 cases. This group last hit their weekly case high during the first week of 2021 with 61 cases. This trend is repeated at the state level, where children under 5 are experiencing their highest number of cases to date. Furthermore, this age group exceeded its weekly case record by nearly 250 cases.
