Backpack. The Broward County sheriff, scott israel, plans to give us a timeline of how all this unfolded today. President trump addressed the nation this morning. He said, no parent should ever have to fear for their sons and daughters when they kiss them goodbye in the morning. The sheriff earlier today said that they were still compiling this timeline of exactly what happened when and when cruz entered the school, when he left, and exactly what he did. Were waiting to get a moredetailed analysis and timeline of that from this News Conference, which is just upcoming. But as we wait, well going to jeff pegues in washington. Jeff. Reporter as you know, jeff, he was in Court Earlier today, and we have some of the Court Documents after that appearance in court. And heres what were learning. According to the court papers, the shooter, cruz, arrived in an uber, so he pulled up on the scene in an uber, according to the court papers. He had a backpack and duffle bag. Now someone saw him coming towards the school and radioed an alarm to the rest of the school. This was a warning that was radioed, declaring this they hadinoid that he was on his way. So for some some reason, authorities there aauthorities l seemed to be alert that perhaps cruz was headed that way. And so that informed the School Officials that he was on the way. So those are some of the details that were getting for the court papers. Also, were learning that the Assault Rifle that was used in the attack was abandoned by cruz. So through the day, weve learned that there was a point where he started, after the shooting, he blended in with the crowd as it was exiting the building. And on his way out, at some point, he abandon that weapon. So these are some of the details that were getting for investigators. We expect to get more as soon as this News Conference starts. Jeff. Glor jeff pegues, thank you very much. Weve heard from students all day today. Ive been talking to students. Those student who want to speak out and want to speak on behalf of fellow students and their teachers and talk about this school and how theyre all coming together. Theyve also been providing a little bit of perspective on the accused here, and they do talk about a student and a colleague in school who they often had awkward social interactions with, if any at all. Some of the descriptions they provide are troubling. And some of them say that when they ended up hearing the name, they thought back to some of the interactions that they may have had with nikolas cruz over the years. I think we have chip reid, also at the white house right now. Chip. Reporter well, jeff, the president did have a statement today, an address to the nation. It was mostly words of comfort. For example, he said at one point, directly to children, he said that children who are alone, confused, or scared, you are never alone and you never will be. The president does plan to go to the parkland area and visit with the communities, with families and First Responders. I will say he did not have a lot of substance in his address today. He said hes going to talk to gfers state attorneys general later in the month when he meets with them. And he does, he said, want to deal with the Mental Health issue. He said in a tweet that this alleged shooter showed signs of mental illness. But i should add to that, the president did sign legislation last year that reversed an obamaera policy, a regulation that would have made it harder for some people to get guns if they had been diagnosed as mentally ill. So the president has said he wants to do things that really make a difference here, but on the issue of mental illness, its going to be very difficult. And, also, he did not talk about guns at all. Were seeing that big divide, democrats saying this means we need gun control. Republicans saying absolutely not. That is not going to solve this problem. Jeff. Glor all right, chip, thanks very much. We also heard from superintendent Robert Runcie earlier today. He made the case in a News Conference earlier for what he called sensible gun control laws. He also talked about increasing the funding for mental illness. Scott israel, the sheriff here, did say in his earlier statement he called for more police power. He said police need to have more ability, when they see something that may be suspicious online, when they get some indication that somebody may possibly want to try to do Something Like this, he wanted more police to be available and more powers to be available to those police to investigate what could eventually become a crime. The f. B. I. Addressed this Youtube Video that came up yesterday. They were alerted to a Youtube Video last year with someone who said, im going to be a professional shooter. The f. B. I. Said that was looked into last year, and they said they couldnt identify exactly who that was at the time. Jeff pegues, id like to bring you back in at this point, if i could, because that that really has been a big point of discussion here and part of the investigation. You have learned anything else about that Youtube Video . Reporter yeah, this was the tip from a man named ben benight, he lives in mississippi, and he said he alerted the f. B. I. To this post on his youtube channel. It was a comment from someone named nikolas cruz. And it was so disturbing to benight, he alerted the f. B. I. The f. B. I. Came to him. They talked to him about 20 minutes, and today they revealed even though they investigated that, they couldnt make the link, they said, at the time to nikolas cruz. So were going to see what they say now. We are getting some indications from the f. B. I. That they may have more information on what happened six months ago. That was in september. So there were indications from this mississippi man that nikolas cruz may have been the one behind that comment, that disturbing comment, on his youtube channel. Glor all right, jeff, thanks very much. We have our discussions with as we continue to wait for this News Conference from the Broward County sheriff and others, again, were expecting a moredetailed timeline of what theyve learned about what happened yesterday, as weve also gotten more information from some of these Court Documents today, and after we saw the appearance by nikolas cruz in court, where he was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, and where he is now being held without bond. Speaking to students yesterday or today about what happened yesterday, they paint a heartbreaking picture, but also one where they saw fellow students take action to try to protect other students. And they also talk about the teachers, and how, to a teacher, everyone one of the ones they saw, their first instinct and their first job was to protect the kids inside that school. And that was closing doors to try to make sure that the shooter didnt get inside that door, and the teacher was the one closest to the door. So if anything happened, it was going to happen to them. And that is shuffling students into closets, putting them in the corner of rooms. They they have gone through these drills here at this school. And this is, unfortunately, a new normal for some of these students, the way they discuss all of this, and the preparation that has gone into this for them because of what else theyve seen happen in other schools around the country. So and you saw part of that yesterday from all the pictures you saw and all the video and what they document the while all of this was happening. Jeff, as we continue to wait for this News Conference, i wonder if you can talk about the job that the f. B. I. Is doing as it relates to that Youtube Video, but also where the investigation goes next. Lawyer. Reporter yeah, so lets lets not talk about that. Glor jeff pegues, you with us . Reporter yes, jeff. We expect this News Conference to start momentarily, obviously, but as i mentioned earlier, the big thing that we have, the information that we have from those Court Documents is just more of this timeline, and we expect more of that from investigators at the scene. It looks like theyre trying to work out who may speak first. So we expect this to start momentarily. Glor, jeffarchs were waiting for them to speak, i think we do have we can take a listen, and we will we promise well come back as soon as the sheriff begins to speak here, which might be as i said earlier, were here to conduct a Law Enforcement briefing tonight. Im going to start off by giving you a timeline and talk about the events that happened yesterday. Im then going to introduce people forsele, the sac of the a. T. F. , and hes going to talk about the origin of the rifle. And youll hear from special agent in charge of the f. B. I. , rob laskey, and hes going to expound a little bit more on the tip. Then ill come back to the podium, and well answer some questions. I wanted to start owl by telling you an uber car dropped off the suspect at 20 19 yesterday, 2 19 p. M. At Stoneman Douglas high school. The suspect entered the east stairwell, thats building 12, with a rifle inside a black, soft case. The suspect exited the stairwell, pulled the rifle out of the case. At 2 21 33, the suspect readed his rifle and began shooting into rooms 1215, 1216, 1214. He went back to 1216, back to 1215, and then to 1213. The suspect then took the west stairwell to the second floor and shot one victim in room 1234 on the second floor. The suspect then took the east stairwell to the third floor. He dropped his rifle and backpack, ran down the stairs. He exited building 12 and ran towards the tennis courts, and then took a southbound turn on foot. The suspect crossed fields and ran west, along with others who were fleeing, and tried to mix in with the group that were running away, fearing for their lives. The suspect arrived at the walmart store. He bought a drinch at the subway, and then left the walmart on foot. The suspect went to mcdonald mcdonalds, sat down for a short period of time. This was at 3 01 p. M. , and he left on foot. At 3 41 p. M. , 40 minutes after he departed from the mcdonalds, the suspect was detained at 4700 Windham Lakes drive in Coral Springs by an officer from the Coconut Creek police department. He was taken into custody without incident. Today, weve interviewed, between the f. B. I. , the broward Sheriffs Office, and a significant amount of investigators from many other agencies f. D. L. E. , a lot of local Law Enforcement, so over 2,000 people were interviewed, and we continue. This is a fluid investigation. We have so many facts come in some true, some unsubstantiated, some rumors. Its going to take a lot of time to sift through whats true, whats accurate, and whats not. I wanted to honor the deceased victims of this horrific killing. Im going to do my best prothe names accurately. Carmen senrks trup. Peter wang. My very, very, very special friend who i will miss aaron feis. May they rest in peace, and may god comfort their families. At this time, special agent in charge of a. T. F. , peter forsele, will speak about the firearm. Good afternoon. On behalf of the men and women from a. T. F. , i want to extend my condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of the community, and i also ask that you keep in your thoughts and prayers the First Responders who responded out to the scene. In 30plus years in Law Enforcement, i can tell you it was a difficult one. The firearm that was united utid in this event was purchased lawfully here in the state of florida just short of a year ago by the individual who is charged with this crime. Were here to help the Broward CountySheriffs Office follow up on any leads that may pertain to the firearm or anything else that they need. Again, i ask that you keep the folks who responded to the scene, as well as the family of the victims in your thoughts and prayers as we get through these difficult days. Thank you. Special agent in charge laskey addressed some of the questions you had today about tips received regarding the suspect. Mr. Laskeys going to expound about some of that information. Good afternoon. Id like to take this opportunity to provide some Additional Information about the tip we spoke about this morning. On september 25, 2017, the f. B. I. Again, my heart goes out to the victims, the families, and the friends and everybody else who suffered by this cowardly and horrific act. Sheriff. They lost children. They lost loved ones. Could you imagine what theyre going through . Thank you for your time. Any questions . Reporter did he belong to a White Nationalist group . One is claiming him as a member. Its not confirmed at this time. Theres so much weve heard that. Were looking into that. And, you know, well just keep following on that wthat. Reporter did he speak to anyone at the mcdonalds . He might have. I dont know at this time he could have shot them. He could have been within the school. They could have been outside. This is an ar15. This is a powerful rifle and could have easily gone through a door or shot while the door was open. So were still examining video. Its a great question. Its something weve asked ourselves. Within a day or two we will have the exact, you know, answer to that. But at this time it, doesnt change over alter the timeline at all. All. If he was a member of this White Nationalist group. It certainly could. Reporter the rooms that were targeted, were they targeted for a reason . Again, we cant stress that enough. If could honor them and respect them during these very difficult times. Weve had hundreds of people today that have gone through crisis, services that we provided at several locations two here in parkland, two in Coral Springs. Well continue to provide those tomorrow and the next day, as necessary. Again, the school is closed from now throughout weekend. Were going to be spending the next couple of days figuring out what the path is to reopen the school, and what type of logistical challenges were gog have, relative to whats occurred in building 12 on this site. Once that information becomes available, we will be providing it out to the parents and the families in the community and the media as well. Again, thank you for reporting our families. Give them the space and time to grieve and get through this very difficult time. Time. Reporter seem to have gone to specific rooms and then upstairs. Have you found any reason for that . I mean, thats what our detectives and thats what the f. B. I. Are doing. Were interviewing him. Well be speaking to him and gathering that information. But i cant enlighten you on that right now. Reporter do you know what time the first call he was dropped off by an uber vehicle. And let me say this at this point, the driver is not complicity in any way, shape, or form. The driver simply picked up a fare and drop the fare off at Stoneman Douglas. He walked into the gate. He walked into the school. And i dont know that anybody recognized him or knew who he was at that point. Reporter . Mental health. Any issues of Mental Health . I dont know anything at this time. Reporter do you have any reason to believe that a Family Member or anybody may have assisted him in this . At this point, we have there are other people we want to certainly talk to. There are people of interest that might enlighten us as to why he did what he did. But at this point, at this time, theres no accomplice or nobody else that were looking at from that perspective. Reporter was he requiring. Im sorry, youre talk ago. Reporter senator nelson mentioned yesterday about him wearing a gas mask and bulletproof vest. No mention of that in the timeline. Can you tell us any more about that . No, i have no reason to believe i havent seen the videos yet. Im going to be briefed tomorrow on that, but i dont know that he had a mask on at any time. Reporter was he required to carry his belongings in a bag, for fear he might bring a weapon in the school . I never heard that. Reporter this morning you said there were still remains inside the school. Have they been taken from the school . Has the school been cleared yet . All the victims are at the medical examiners office. And right now, the medical examiner is doing a thorough investigation. As i said before, we want to release the victims to their families. We understand that the sabbath is tomorrow, and were very cognizant of that. But the main thing we want to do is we want to make sure there is a successful prosecution, and we want to do we want to go as a matter of fact we can, but accurate is better than speedy. Reporter is the school still being swept . The school is a crime scene, and were examining the crime scene. Reporter all the students they read out . No, there are adults ons lest as well. Reporter has the family he was staying with said anything, that they noticed anything . Im not sure at this time. Reporter are they blood brothers . Ive never heard its first gentleman you named, i never heard his name before. Thank you very much. Reporter are they blood related . Glor the sheriff in Broward County and other authorities speaking of how methodically the shooter yesterday here in parkland, florida, acted, taking an uber to the school, then going into at least five different rooms to use his rifle.
