Welcome to cbs this morning with continuing coverage of that terrible attack in las vegas. It is now the deadliest mass shooting in american history. A gunman firing from an upper floor of a resort, mandalay bay on the Las Vegas Strip has killed more than 50 people last night at an outdoor Country Music festival. That death toll is preliminary and it could increase. The suspect was shot and killed by police on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort and casino. He is identified as 64yearold Stephen Paddock. Police are searching his home in mesquite, nevada. The latest from the clark county sheriffs is 200 other people are hurt including two offduty Police Officers, at least reported to be among the dead this morning. Police said they also believe they have found paddocks wife, Marilou Danley who has been wanted for questioning this morning. The shooting began late last night during the performance of jason aldean at the Country Music festival. It was across the street from the mandalay bay, and john is just south of the strip. John, good morning. Reporter while Police Searching the Mandalay Bay Hotel here say they have found several weapons in the room on the 32nd floor that the gunman used to fire down into this crowd of concertgoers. Cell phone video helping police piece together what many of these people are calling the scariest time of their life. Initially many people thought the cracks they were hearing are fireworks, but it quickly became clear that this was an attack. What sounded like automatic gunfire rang out late sunday night. The bullets spraying into a crowd of roughly 40,000 concertgoers on the Las Vegas Strip. These videos captured the chaos unfolding on the ground. There was confusion about where the bullets were coming from, or even if they were bullets. Some were frozen in panic. Others fled for their lives. And all of a sudden, we heard, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Countless times and we all thought it was firecrackers. And then it kept ongoing, and then he fired for a bit, and then he fired another 15, 20 rounds and we realized it was fully automatic. Reporter police say the gunshots came from above. We determined there was a shooter on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay. The police engaged the suspect at that location. Reporter the suspect is now dead, and authorities are still trying to piece together the scope of the carnage. Right now, we need your truck. We just need to get people to the hospital, okay . Okay. Reporter the people were ska scattered, and bystanders were trying to get those hit by gunfire to the hospital. Some were falling and screaming and yelling and running, and everybody was literally laying on top of each other trying to get out of the way. Reporter and here sadly, were bracing for what could be worse with the hospitals pact with the wounded. The sheriff has warned that death toll of 50 may well go higher, jeff. Oh,boy, john. We are dreading this new. Thank you very much. Well check in with you. Gail davis was at the concert when the shooting started. She joins us from las vegas. I cant imagine how you are feeling at this second. Im so glad that you can join us right now. What can you tell us about what you saw and what happened . Well, its kind of just shocking, but, you know, you dont expect Something Like this. We went there to see jason aldean really. It was a threeday show, and we went to see jason. He is my favorite singer, and we got there, and we were standing, like, maybe halfway up, and just waiting for him to come on stage. He came on and about 20 to 10 00, and he sang about five songs and we heard about three or four little pop, pop, pops, and everything looked around and said, oh, its just firecrackers, and then we heard pop, pop, pop, and it just kept going and going, and my husband said, thats not firecrackers. That sounds like a semiautomatic rifle, and then everybody started screaming and started to run, and i looked over to my right where this girl had been standing right beside me, and she had fallen first, she stood there and grabbed her stomach and she looked at her hands and her hands were all bloody, and she was wearing, like, a little crop top and, you know, blue jean shorts and cowboy boots and she looked at her hands and her hands were bloody, and she just kind of screamed and fell back, and everybody started yelling and there were guys there, and we rt s started jumping up and down waving for help, and we heard a whole bunch of shots fired, and people started running and so my husband said, get down, get down. We bent down, and everybody was running straight up, and you could see people getting shot and people falling and then my husband said, gail, we have got to go. We have got to go. We have to get out of here or were going to get shot. We started running and there was the little i dont know where the Concession Stands are, a little cubicle kind of things of tents and we started to run and a met ro officer who you owe my life to, he said, come here. And we went inside and the lights were on, and Everything Else was dark. They turned the stage lights off, and we went running in there, and he said, get down. So we got down and i was there. My husband was in front of me, and there was another two ladies behind us, and the officer actually cover med up to protect me from being shot because i couldnt get out all the way, and it was, like, you could hear the shots just, like, going back and forth and ricochetting, and and then they would stop, and then we thought, okay. Its over. Its over, and then it would start again, and this happened a couple of times, and the officer stood up and i heard op his radio say, we have active shooters, and i heard him say, oh, god. And he walked out to look around, and he had his gun out, and he was looking around, and then it started shooting again, and he came running back in and covered me up again, and the shooting would just stop. Like he or she or whatever was refilling or whatever you call it, reloading, and he said, we need to get you out of here. So we went to another little tent and stood in there or we laid down in there, and that officer was with me. He was like my Guardian Angel, and he never left me. We could hear the shots getting closer it seemed, and my husband got hit with shrapnel. He goes, gail, i think i got some of the i dont know what you call it. Lead or something, and feel how hot it is. The shooting kind of stopped and it kept stopping like they were refilling or something, or reloading and the officer said, we need to get you it out of here. We have to get you out of here, but stay low, but we went to get out the back but we couldnt because there was a door, and we pushed it down and we ran out. He said, stay out of the light. Just run. Just run and keep down. Keep down, and as were running, theres people laying everywhere. People were bleeding and one guy was holding his girlfriend or wife, or. He was crying and saying, im so sorry. Its my fault, and she had been shot in the head and covered with blood. We ran and there was just ambulances and police cars everywhere. It was heartbreaking. It was unreal. You are painting an incredible story. We are so sorry you had to go through Something Like this. It sounds absolutely terrifying. How long did this shooting seem to last to you . Well, it seemed like a long time, but maybe only ten minutes, it seemed. You know, maybe 15 minutes. It seemed forever, but then again, it was, like, so fast. Your mind plays tricks on you and its hard to say, but i have never been that scared in my life. Gail, how many people were in the area where were watching . Oh, it was packed. It was packed because jason aldean is the number one singer and he was the last singer for the venue, and for the show, and so everybody was there having a good time. It was packed. I dont know, thousands. It was just packed, you know. Everywhere. Gail, where is the officer who helped you . Do you know where he is now . No. I saw his face, and im going to try to go down to metro and see if i can find him and look it a his pictures because he saved me. I know. I just the girl that got shot was right next to me. I dont know. I wish i can find them. Im going to try to find him and tell him thank you. That Police Officer like you said, a Guardian Angel for you and your husband there. Can you describe the rest of the scene though, in terms of security . How quickly did you see First Responders run towards the scene and start helping the wounded . Almost immediately. The metro was there. They are always right there, you know . The metro is such an Amazing Police force, and they were right there. Ambulances were coming. We had ambulances everywhere. There were police cars everywhere, and the Police Officers were helping the other concertgoers were helping everybody. It was just amazing. We all came together, and everybody was helping everybody. It was wonderful to see,and i just love metro. Im just so proud of them. A lot of people are giving big kudos to the Las Vegas Police department. It would not have made a difference in this particular shooting, but did you have to go through a security device when you went into the concert today . Yeah, when walk through. I didnt have anything because i, you know, i dont carry anything. They all look at your backpacks and stuff, but its very secure, and my husband saw the shots from mandalay bay. They were, like, a little bit above, halfway higher up. He could see lights flashing. They said he saw where the shooter was. So yeah. I can tell, and i know this is traumatic. Im sure you are still in quite a bit of shock, but have you been able to wrap your brain around you went to a concert of all things, and this sounds like a terrible movie . I saw jason in San Bernardino, and he is amazing and my husband surprised me. We didnt go the first two days and he said, lets go see jason and it was a wonderful surprise, and to have this happen, you know, i just i just cant wrap my mind around it like you said. Its just hard. Jason posted a facebook message to all those fans like yourself who were there to see him, and we spoke with another performer who was on stage right before him, jake owen, who had seen children in the crowds sitting on their parents shoulders. Did you get a sense of how many children were at the concert . We know it was around 10 00 p. M. , but clearly they are music fans in all ages and parents bring them to these kind of concerts. Jason is just a great all around singer and he is such a good guy and he has two daughters himself, and his wife is expecting a baby in a couple of months, and everybody he is so wholesome, and Everybody Loves him. There were kids there, and one lady was just screaming and going, i cant find my daughter. I cant find my daughter, and i dont know if she found her or made it or anything. It was just chaos. It was just where crazy. When we talked to jake owen earlier today, he said he hopes that people will still continue. That he is going to get back on stage and perform and he hopes anybody who was at the concert will continue to do so, and we wont let a coward as he says, change our way of life. How are you feeling about that . Oh, no. Ill still go. Of course, ill go. Ill be a little more on guard, but you cant foresee Something Like this or expect this. Ill go again, and im sure we love and support our country artists. Especially jason. It sounds like your husband was a hero as well very having a peace of mind and recognizing those firecrackers were, in fact, gunshots and we wish him the best of recovery from the shrapn shrapnel wounds. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate pitch. The president has been briefed on this. Margaret brennan is at the white house. The president has released his first tweet about the shooting. Captioning funded by cbs welcome back to cbs this morning. Its been a terrible day in las vegas as you know. We continue our coverage in las vegas on the attack that killed more than 50 people overnight. The suspect attacked thousands attending the concert at the route festival. It was across from the mandalay bay resort and casino. Eyewitnesses say it was terrifying. I work as mandalay bt mandal valet. It sounded like a huge jackhammer and heard glass fall down and massive amounts of bursts of guns. We didnt know wait was. Then we started seeing more glass, more glass, shotgun rounds. I thought, something is going on here. We saw jason run off stage and people all over on the floor, the grassy area in front of the stage like some were falling and some were screaming and yelling and running, and we were in this tower up on top and its like evan said hit the floor, so everyone was like literally lying on top of each other trying to get out of the way the shots just kept coming. I heard it, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Even after we left it was going and going and going. We were in the shopping centering am people were running up the escalator and saying shooter, shooter, so we went into the guinness store, i believe, and we were koojd of in their dressing room and hiding because we were very afraid that somebody was there. Cbs News Senior National security analyst fran downs end is here. She was Homeland Security down for george w. Bush. Were also joined by paul v violas. Unfortunately as we heard from the Clarke County sheriff joe lombardo, visibly shaking. Hes steeling everyone for worse news to come. Kudos to their containment and the expeditious manner in which they responded to this. When the sheriffs speaking about this, for him to say to come out and say theres 50 and the amount of injured, unfortunately thats going to go up. This is being called the deadliest mass shooting in american history. What are they looking for now in. Perimeter. Theyre establishing an interperimeter and outer perimeter. Theres two crime scenes. You have the shooter on the 2nd floor of the mandalay bay bay. Theyre going to see the casings he dropped and the weapons he used and theyre going to find more information this this location thats going to give them further information as to what the next steps are. Lets talk about that, fran. Hes on the 32nd floor. This seems to be something we havent seen before in this country. We talked to an eyewitness who said your bags were checked as you went into the arena. It was an outdoor festival. But somebody on the 32nd floor just sprays and it went on for a long time. Were hearing reports that it went on from anywhere from 8 to 15 minutes. That sounds like an incredibly long time if youre in the plaza and hearing those shots. But fact that the s. W. A. T. Team could feed the source of the fire, get up in the room and take out the shooter in period o time is really incredible. Its a credit to them. The Las Vegas Sheriffs Office works very closely with the hotels in las vegas. Chief Security Officers meet on a regular basis. They perform exercises with the local Sheriffs Department, and all those things were to the benefit in resolving this and as horrific as the numbers are and a agree it would have riz snoon you give them credit. They train in this. Thats right. They practice just these sorts of scenarios. They work through and know exactly what theyre doing when they enter that room to take the guy out. Fran, the white house chief of staff john kelly was the one who alerted the president of the shooting. The president tweeting my warmest condolences to the vilk tims and families of the Las Vegas Shooting. God bless you. No word yet on what this will turn into a federal investigation, but do you expect that to happen . Certainly the feds will support it. Like the atf, alcohol, tobacco, and firearms understands the history of the weapons thamt i know it was an automatic weapon that the shooter used. We also know they found other weapons in the room. Youre foumg to want to though the entire history of the weapons. When did he purchase them from where and that will be an important piece and so the feds will help that. We know that theres a search warrant at his mesquite retirement home, the shooters. They will go through all of his electroni electronics, they will go through fiscal evidence. We dont know that yet, but many of the clues will exist in the physical evidence as well as an interview of the wife or companion that thaw have identified or spoken to. This is Marilou Danley who is stephens wife. Theyve been looking for her all morning long. Las vegas Police Tweeted out a picture looking for her, saying they want to speak with her. We dont know where she is now or what condition she is in. Police have located her, which is the primary person they were trying to reach after this shooting happened to figure out what happened. Yeah. It will be interesting to hear the circumstances of how she was in custody. Well get back to you, paul and fran, in just a minute. Storme warren was host of the concert. You were there. What did you see . What happened . Its what you would expect, the worst scenario you could possibly believe. Watching jason aldean perform a great show and then hearing ratatattat, ratatattat and thinking its pyrotechnics and its not. When did you realize, storme, that it was gunfire . After the second sound of ratatattat. When you knew it wasnt an audio fwlich. Im standing right on the side of the stage right next to the band, and when you knew it wasnt an audio glitch and it wasnt pyrotechnics, you knew it was a problem, and you recognize the sound of gunfire, and when it wouldnt stop. Thats when it was a problem. What did you do . Well, first of all, we made sure that we were safe, and jason and his crew, i mean professional. Cleared jason off, the band off, everybody was off stage. And i stood there. A bunch of us stood there going, yeah, we should probably leave, too, and we dove under the teenage. A few of us sat behind the concrete barrier because we knew the shots were coming from the mandalay. You could hear it coming from there. It was loud highpowered rifle fire coming interest the mandalay bay. From the roof, i thought. Found out it was the 32nd floor. Storme were you life . We were not broadcasting his show and were not able to relay any of this so what we were experiencing is what every one of the 30,000 people were experiencing out there on the Festival Grounds at route 91. Great festival, three day, no problem. Everything was just pef and to have the last act of the last day of the festival marred by this horrible act, were still trying to put words, to 450id behind barriers, to hind mind truck, the hide behind anything we could try to find safe, you cant put that into words. This is las vegas. This fun. Its not supposed to be a place where youre in danger. I know. Storme, what can you tell us about this festival . We see there are a lot of children there. What is this event . You know what . Maybe this were a lot of children in there. I didnt see a lot of children there. There were loot of young adults there and adults. Its a fun Country Music event. And im sure there were children there, but my god, thank god i didnt see any of them when i walked through after the shooting stopped. Storme, this event has been going on for a few years . Whats that . That this event has been going on for a few years . Yes. Storme, what did you see after you walked through . After the shooting stopped because we were all hiding, as soon as we started walking through the grounds trying to help anyone we could, in the grass where the audience was standing, we could see bodies. It wasnt just one or two. There were numerous. I know the report was coming out its with really small numbers, but i cant express to you how difficult it was to step over and to check on and to look at bodies and then to find ones that were still alive and try to help them and then try to find First Responders, anybody. I want to get this across. The humanity at this event was amazing. Everybody chipped in to help. This wasnt like an event where people were running away and trying to hide. This was an event where we knew what was going on. This was a shooting event and there were people that were hurt and people that were dead and we were trying to save the ones who were still alive and everyone chipped in to help. It was an amazing humanity event, but scary at the same time because we didnt know what was next. No. It sounds very terrifying, storme. We wonder how youre feeling. Listen, the more behear, the worse it gets. This is the worst in u. S. History. How do you process that . You dont. I ran off with chris young, singers, songwriters, a bunch of our friends. We fwaergted as a group, i said lets travel as a pack thats not backstage at an event where the shooter has obviously put his bullseye. So we ran off and found a safe place and weve been sitting here trying to process this as on our way we were stepping past body bodies, bodies we knew were gone. And the ones that werent gone, we did whatever we could to help. Other witnesses we talked to this morning said they had no idea where the bullets were coming from. Listening to you, you seem you were saying that you actually saw something from the mandalay hotel. What exactly did you see . I heard. I dont want to say saw. I heard. What exactly a ratatattat sound from the mandalay bay up top. There was no doubt where it was coming from. I didnt know it was from the roof or wherever, but it was coming from that piece of property. And as we sat there on the stage and stood there watching jason aldean, just to hear that sound and just know theres nothing we could do. You were absolutely helpless. He could have done anything he wanted to. We did hear from an eyewitness earlier that her husband actually saw the shots or the lightning flashes from the gun up in the mandalay bay. Im going to say a little im going to contradict that just a little bit because there was a strobe light halfway down on the 14th floor that was lit up for about three days at the festival and as we walked across the street every night, i looked up and i saw this one random strobe light up on this 14th floor window. I thought, who would just put a strobe light in a window. And i think a lot of people are signaling that as what they saw. I dont think that was it. Okay. We well, it doesnt for our purposes they found the shooter. They saw something from the 32nd floor of the hotel, but not for them, whats important is that he is down and not hurting anyone else. Storme warren, thank you for your time, and were glad to hear youre safe. Yeah. Thank you. Randy sutton is a former Law Enforcement officer who served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department for almost 24 years. He joins us from las vegas this morning. Randy, can you tell us how hotels coordinate with police in las vegas . Yeah. Theres a very close synergy that takes place between Hotel Security and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department. They work very closely together because the problems that take place in the casinos are generally handled by their unterm security, but any time there is a Law Enforcement issue, they then contract metro. So there is a very close relationship between the Security Apparatus and metro. And do they coordinate do they perform drills together . There are times when they do Work Together when they do like rehearsals for certain types of evacuations. And each year there is there are events that tack place where theres a close cord nachlgts for instance, new years eve where we close the strip down and coordination like that as well. Keep in mind that many of these security personnel are no longer arm. Theres been a move to disarm most of the security people so that there are some armed. Most are not though. We know this shooter was on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Is this something your department would have ever prepared for, a shooter up above the crowd . Yes. Well, when i say yes. These type of events are planned for. I mean you can only you can only do so much, but this is not this is totally within the realm of contingency planning. Now, the way the shooter was identified was not from the muzzle flashes but the Smoke Detector in the room went off from the amount of smoke that came from firings that fully automatic weapon. Thats how they were able to close in on them so quickly. And, randy, when you talk about First Responders, youre not talking about just First Responders. There are medical rye responders as well. Are the hospitals in the surrounding area equipped for such a mass casualty shootinglet obviously thats where the focus is now on the 200plus victim wlos are still critically injured and being treated at the local hospitals. Right. The University Medical center is the normal Trauma Center where gunshot victims are taken. Unc was overwhelmed immediately with the number of casualties. Keep this in mind. Many of these injured were taken by civilians, that there simply werent enough ambulances to get there in time. So they were taken by civilians to area hospitals literally all over the valley. Now, this shooting went on from somewhere in the area of 15, 20 minutes, so that interfered with getting the First Responders in to the area because this individual planned this horrific shooting immaculately. When you look at what his field of fire was, the ware that he prepared hipps by having multiple firearms, by having the ability to have enough ammunition to rain down hell on those poor innocent people that were doing nothing except enjoeing themselves, he chose his target well. And then to go and reload the way he didnt im very interested in what you said about muzzle flashes, that it wasnt the muzzle flashes that drew police to the room but the Smoke Detectors that went off in the room. What does that tell you about the amount of firepower that this gentleman had in his hotel room . Well, when you fire even for our five rounds from a weapon leak that, four or five rounds, a would jn rate a fairly high amount of smoke, but when you talk about the number of rounds he fired, literally hundreds of rounds, he must have prepared with having multiple magazines loaded and ready to reload. Probably also he had more than one firearm is my understanding, so all he had to do was drop it, pick up another one, and continue his murderous assault on those people. What kind of distance are we talking about between the hotel room where he was firing from and the crowd below . Im going to estimate about 400 yards, and that would be within the killing range of that weapon that he was using, which is clearly either a true assault weapon or it was a weapon that was modified to become fully automatic. I dont know how this individual would have obtained a fully automatic or a number of fully automatic weapons as they are heavily regulated. That was my next question to you. That was my question about gun laws. As a law even forcement officer, is it is to get this kind of weaponry in las vegas . Can anybody just walk in a store and buy this . No, absolutely not. Tomato know that these weapons that he had were originally designed as fully automatic or if they were modified. You see, if you have the skill leveling and certain people do, you can obtain a kit which can take a semiautomatic rifle and make it into a fully automatic rifle. Im not thats what this investigation they ear going to have the atf part of this investigation that theyre already involved with the fbi, metro will be handle the ma skrot of this investigation. But they will have to the atf will be examining those firearms that have been that will have been ceased to determine, a, what if they were if they were originally designed as fully automatic. They will also they have the ability to track those fire arms literally back to where that u were manufactured. Now, were they stolen . Were they modified . Dud he obtain them legally . All of these are part of the overall investigation. These are questions that really have to be answered. Randy sutton. Stand by. With dont have the answers. Police are trying to find that out. Well bring you the information as soon as we have. We do now have the picture of the man who has taken so many lives today. Stephen paddock, 64 years old. He was living in a Retirement Community, we are told, in mesquite, nevada. No criminal record. No criminal record p the latest from the Clarke County sheriffs, at 10 00 p. M. Pacific tyke, las vegas time, last night began firing from the 32 md floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and killed at least 50 people, injured at least 200. Clarke county sheriffs have prepared those on the ground there and everyone else for that news to get worse as they assess exactly how everyone is doing. It was interesting to hear randy sutton and others talk about pause hospitals have been so overwhelmed in las vegasing not just First Responders and pair med ilks and Police Taking peen to hospital but ordinary civilians, folks attending the concert, trying to get people any help they could. A reminder this was happening in the middle o the night as well. Investigators are sifting through his belongings. Meantime the white house says President Trump was briefed overnight on the shooting. The president has expressed his condolences via twitter. Margaret brennan, good morning. Good morning. Its been a very Early Morning for white house staffers who have been up since 4 00 a. M. The president sends his condolences to the victims of the with Las Vegas Shooting. We heard from the Vice President in the last few minutes as well. s tweeted out a sears of remarks, sending prayers. He wanted to thank the first resmoermds on the ground over what he refers to as senseless violence. No direct remarks yet on the characterizing. It appears to be, based on numbers, the largest event in u. S. History. The dau e, ivanka trump, sent two tweets this morning. Our collective hearts are breaking. And trump family members have been sending their thoughts. They still expect the president to proceed at 10 00 a. M. Thats when he will be briefed. The daily president ial briefing he receives. At 1 178 hes still expected to gufb those remarks that were goingen to be about deregulation. Youve got to malk hes going to have to address for the public this horrific act of rylance and it appears at this point he will proceed as planned to puerto rico tomorrow to view the devastation there. I think its important to understand the white house is balancing a number of domestic advices right now. Not just this shooting. But theyre still trying to teal with the devastation in puerto rico. All right. Thank you very much. Sincer songwriter jake owen had finished performing at the route 91 festival when the shooting broke out. We spoke with him by telephone. You were there. How are you processing this . Its very, very upsetting. Im absolutely blown away. E im sitting inside a bus 100 feet from the stage that i was standing on when this started happening and watching the news now saying theres more than 50 people deceased and 200 injured, and its we middle of it. When we started hearing the shots ricocheting, we accident know where it was coming from. You didnt know if it was someone on the ground. At one point i was sitten on the ground behind a car with 20 other people. Just the fear in everyones eyes but everyone looking for someone to make sure they were okay, it was just i never experienced anything like this before. What did you think was happeninging jake, when you first heard the shots . Number one, did you know they were shots . Ironically when i walked on stage, security was pretty tight because jason used his pyrotechnics and the fire marshal didnt want a lot of people backstage due to the fire that would come off of them. When i was standing next to my buddh buddy luke holmes, i heard these pops starts. Thats when you knew it was not pyrotechnics but an automatic rifle. Jason has tweeted skprensing his condolences. Have you talked since this incident . I have, along with a few other friends who are artists as well. We were all in shock, dhek on each other, makingi sure everyoe was okay. I was separated from my own crew. A friend of mine got separated from her husband. They couldnt get ahold of each other. Yeah. How long did the gunfire last . How long did it appear to last . Thats whats crazy. I believe they lasted, no joke, anywhere between 8 and 10 minutes. You could hear it first. It makes more sense now because the first few shots came off individually. Its almost like as if he broke the window. At that point he unloaded the weapon. I ran offstage. He was still firing shots. By the time i got back over to a crew bus in the middle of the parking lot a few blocks away, we all laid down and you could still hear them firing shots. This went on for a good, like i said, six to ten minutes. What was your message to your fans who were there across the country who may be tuning in and watching you relive the horror of what happened a few hours ago . What is your message to them . You know, i would end of the day, e im just a guy who sings songs. It think its important for us in a simple way to those who come out every week who bring their family to not be scared of this, you know. Were still going to go out there and do this. This is so unfortunate that these things have to happen for us to see that this thing is real. All right. That was jake owen reporting. Its hard to hear these accounts. Im gayle king with jeff glor and bianna golodryga. Charlie and norah are off on assignment. The deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. It happened across the street from the Mandalay Bay Hotel and casino. Police say Stephen Paddock was killed on the 32nd floor of that resort. Theyre searching his home in mesquite, nevada. Police believe they have also located his wife who is wanted for questioning. John blackstone is near mandalay bay. John, that i have located his cars as well. Reporter they have. Police have entered the room on the 32nd floor where the shots were fired. They say they found multiple weapons that were in that room and used. About 40,000 people gathered for the concert when the shooting started atting 10 00 p. M. Witnesses say the shooting just continu continued. Time after time the shots would end briefly. There would be a brief pause while the gunman was reloading and shots would begin again. Witnesses described how they hit the floor and when bullets paused for just those few seconds, theyd try to get out. Get some cover. This went on for ten minutes, maybe more. It seemed endless for those under this fire. Eventually police did identify this room on the 32nd floor. They went in and shot and killed the gunman. The investigation is continues. As this was taking place, las vegas shut down, the strip shut down, roads blocks, freeways blocks the airport shut down. The city came to a halt as they reacted to this. John, thanks a lot. Theyre looking into the past of this gunman Stephen Paddock. Jeff pegues is in washington with new details about what police are learning. Jeff . Even though were about eight hours into this investigation, details are still fluid at this point, and so we might be getting changes. One of the thilgs that weve heard over the last several minutes is that this suspect, this shooter did have runins with police. Now, what were being told by our federal Law Enforcement sources is the contacts with police were of a local nature in that he was having some sort of runins with local police there. Were not sure exactly what that means, whether it was a parking ticket. It was nothing that rose to the level of federal Law Enforcement and it doesnt appear to be anything that was extremely serious or anything that would have at least from outward signs led up to the type of shooting that we saw. For the most part, he was not on Law Enforcement radar as someone you have to watch for or be on the lookout for. Thats part of the thinking going into this investigation in the early stages now. They know that hes 64 years old or was 64 years oil. He lived about an hour and a half from where the attack occurred. We also know with a search of Court Records is that he filed a lawsuit against another resort, Cosmopolitan Hotel resorts back in 2012. It looks like he was involved or claims there was some sort of injury on accident on the premises. He sued. But in 2014 that lawsuit was dismissed. Were working on getting more details on that too. This is all were trying to get on. Also as Law Enforcement officials are doing right now, you look into, well, how long had he been in the hotel in the resort. Was this something he had been planning for a long time. This is something theyre trying to get right now. Again, they were looking for this person of interest, Marilou Danley. We were told by Law Enforcement officials they caught up to her. She will also likely be a source of information for them. Whether she cooperates is a big question there. But also if he was living in a retirement home, you would think there would be some sort of contact with staff there and there would be some sort of record on his behavior, his demeanor. These are all reservoirs of information that investigators are looking for and looking through as they try to answer this question. As you look at this video, early on in one of the press conferences, the sheriff Jeff Lombardo talked about social media while all of this was going on. While social media can be a lot of comfort for people, what you hear sheriffs Officials Say in this case in some instances it was adding to the panic, inciting more panic because there were reports of multiple shooters and multiple incidentsle so instead of being a help or aid to law even forcement. It only added to the chaos and confusion there, but Law Enforcement is looking for more cell phone video like this. Thats what we heard from local officials there. You can see where people are running. You can see where people are looking. And you can see in shocking detail, really, how all of this unfolded and how people were running for cover and where they were trying where Law Enforcement specifically was trying to pinpoint where these multiple shots were coming from. So, investigators, yeah, they have a lot to work with, but its still early on in this investigation. So dont be surprised that some of the details that they have bianna . The information you have is stev Stephen Paddock had one incident certified. Thats right. This was the Cosmopolitan Hotel resorts. Were looking to see if theres any connection there to where the shooting attack occurred. But our initial check has not found any connection. He spent some time to las vegas. Its not like he was a stranger to the area. Hes been there before. Looks like hes been there multiple times before. As i said, jeff, he doesnt have anything that stands out in terms of an arrest record or criminal past that would give investigators an inling that this is someone we should be on the lookout for. The runins do not painted a picture of this map. The way it happened does not fit the recent profiles of some of the incidents weve seen. Weve about seen attacks in paris, brussels, attacks in london after the Ariana Grande concert. So with those attacks, there was this connection to isis, al qaeda, this inspired type of attack. And so in recent history if youre an investigator, you look at those recent cases and say, okay, as we put these pieces together, we ear not going prejudge this investigation but heres what weve seen in the past. Oh, yes, isis and al qaeda have been calling for attacks, mass attacks like this, but this is not fitting that mode. Thats why investigators have to start from scratch. Theyre not going to jump to any conclusions as they try to paint a picture as to why this man carried out this type of attack in this way, why did he choose that hotel, why did he choose that event. These are all important questions that investigators locally and federal officials are assisting in this. This is what theyre trying to find out as we speak. A lot of questions to be answered there. Thank you very much, jeff. Lets bring in france townsend and cbs Law Enforcement analyst paul viosas. We keep saying this man doesnt fit a profile. You dont think of the words Retirement Community and someone who could do this kind of damage and can we call it terrorist against a group of people attending a music festival. Fran . Any sort of violence against a civilian population instills terror, right . So what theyre going to look at is motive. Was he inspired by some terror group or was he truly a lone wolf with an individual grievance. Its interesting. Jeff talked about jeff pegues talked about he had some cotact with Law Enforcement. He described it as minor. Theyre quite ceremony when you look at the lone wolf scenario. They tend to have some sort of personal grievances or petty contact with Law Enforcement. The fact hes had some contact with Law Enforcement but doesnt have an arrest record doesnt mean theyre not familiar with him that. Will be part of painting a picture of who was this individual and what motivated him. Paul, youre shaking your head on that. Just because he hasnt been arrested doesnt mean they dont know about him is that youre 100 correct. Whats going to happen, theyre going to go there and look at the fir cards. What promulgated him them to co out . What did they speak to him about . It could have been loud noise, threats from a neighbor. Piggybacking on what gayle said, just because he does not have a criminal record does not mean he doesnt have a criminal past. What we do now know is he has the face for the worst destruction in u. S. History. It was arguably the stars biggest performance of the night. The last performance of the last day of this theeday concert series. It does appear that he was looking for maximum casualty. Absolutely. And when you look at we now know that not only did he use an automatic weapon. But based upon what were seeing from the videotapes, whelp Law Enforcement went into his room, they found additional weapons. It was meticulously planned. It was for maximum effect, maximum lethality. And it looks like he didnt expect to make it out. Absolutely not. And the Smoke Detectors were going off, they were saying. Thats right. He didnt make any attempt to escape or move. He stayed there. As far as we know. We havent heard specifics of exact will i what happened when he was encountered by the police. They havent confirms those details. All of this, we should mention again as we report on this, many of the details will change, a lot of the information will change. Were getting you the best information we can at the moment based on what we have, but a lot of this will change as we move along here. And, paul, theyre dealing with an enormous crime scene. No question. Theres two crime scenes. Youre going to have the crime scene where the shooter was. Theyre going have to take look at the weapons. Atf will get involved. The collaborative effort between all of them is going to be at play in that particular room zwruft to see from that perspective, how many rounds were fired, shell casings, et cetera. The second is going to be two. Inner perimeter and outer perimeter. Theyll have to control access to that because unfortunately theyre going to have to from a forensic side theyre going to have to count pods and figure out trace evidence. Theyve got a lot of work ahead of them. As you pointed out and that i agree, theres a lot more. Theyre going to have a difficult time conducting interviews because of the fact shock is still settling in. This is evidenced fwi the fact we have a disparity as to how long this took. We heard from eight minutes to 20. Why the difference . The dynamic is adrenaline rush. It takes time. It mikes frame by frame. If you ever see a video of someone robbing a store, you hear them say hurry up, hurry up, hurry up, theyre seeing framepy frame by frame. Does that mean slow motion . Exactly. Theyre going to have to marry pictures fromtosee when it started and when it ended. Theres a critical third location. That youre searching his home. The third critical location where evidence will come from. Theyll try too identify his contacts. See there are records. What are cctvs. You said that. Closed he was measuring four football fields. We havent had it confirmed from police, but thats an enormous distance from where he was shooting and where people were hit. Why is that significant . It goes back to the weapons he used. Haypowered rifles, 400 yards. It speaks to what kind of luggage did this guy have when he came in. Thats going to be telling. I have to ask you. We have the puerto rico incident and then this. The president is going to puerto rico tomorrow. Is that right on his part and as far as Homeland Security forces are there enough to deal with whats happening in puerto rico as well as now address this mass shooting . Absolutely. Look. The Las Vegas Mass Shooting is essentially a local investigation that is supported by the federal government. One of the things dhs will being down is disseminating that to other state and local authorities so they can learn from this event. In the meantime youve got fema, an element of the development of Homeland Security. The president needs to go down to puerto rico. The white house has been under assault. Theyve been criticized. The president needs to satisfy himself that the government is doing everything they can. You dont expect his plans to change on that. I dont. I hope not. Frankly do i expect him to also go to las vegas . Yes. This is not the time. Theyre in the middle of a Crime Scene Investigation and the investigation of the shooter and so this would. By the type for the president to be there. We just want to remind our viewers that we have not forgotten about those suffering those in puerto rico, but, of course, were still developings this story in las vegas. Hospitals in lakefront are stretched to the limit treating the casualties. Karster evans is outside the Emergency Center in Southern Nevada caring for the wounded. Its about five miles from the shooting scene. Good morning. Reporter good morning. This is University Medical center, the only level one. Police are blocking off the entranc entrances, making sure if ambulances come, they have easy access. All to keep the crowd controlled in case theyre coming to look fir loved ones. Theyve taken in 104 patients. 30 were treated in the Trauma Center. Eight to the emergency room. They were delivered by ambulance but not just that but by people in their own vehicles. Ievg heard several accounts of that. People were found by victims, in many cases hiding. Theyd come out and there were no paramedics around and it was just civilians bringing them to the hospital. Of course, you can imagine how busy they are inside this hospital. We also heard two Police Officers were killed. So this hits close to home for them as well. 104 patients in this level one hospital. You can imagine its very busy. Very busy. Very sad in las vegas. Thank you very much, carter. A short time ago she told us what it was like and how she got through it. I cant imagine how you were feeling at this second. Im so glad you can join us right now. What can you tell us about what you saw about what happened that oh, well, its kind of just shocki shocking. You went there to see jason. It was a threeday show. We went to see jason. Hes my favorite singer. We got there. We were standing like maybe halfway up waiting for him to come on the stage. He came on at about 20 to 10 00. We were listening to him. He sang about five songs and all of a sudden we heard three or four little pop, pop, pop. And everybody looked around and said, oh, its just firecrackers. And then we heard pop, pop, pop and it kept going. My husband said, thats not firecrackers. That sounds like a semiautomatic rifle. Everybody started screaming and starting to run and i looked over to my right where this girl had been standing right beside me and she had fallen and at first she stood there and grabbed her stomach and then she look at her hands. Her hands were all bloody. She was wearing a little crop top and blue jean shorts and cowboy boots. She looked at her hands and they before bloody and she fell back and everybody started yelling. There were guys yelling and we were jumping p and down waving for help and all of a sudden we heard a whole bunch of shotted fires and people started running and so my husband said get down, get down. So we bent down and everybody was just running straight. You you side people getting shot and people falling and then my husband said, gayle, we even fwob tot go, weve got to go, weve got to get out of here, with oar going to get shot. And we started running. And there was the little i dont know, where the concession starts are and little coupe kl things of tint and a metro officer who i owe my life to grabbed us and said come here, come here, get in here. We went running inside. The lights were on and Everything Else was dark. That i turned the stage lights off and everything. We went running in there. He said get down. We got down, my husband was in front of me and there were two ladies behind us. And the officer actually cover med up to protect me from being shot because i couldnt get down all the way and you could hear the shots going back and forth and ricocheting and and then they would stop and then we thought, okay, its over, its oak, and thefr it would start again and this happened a couple of times and the officer stood up and i heard on his radio say we have active shooters and he i heard him say, oh, god, and he walked out to look around, and he had his gun out and he was looking around and they started shooting again and he cam back in and covered me up again and the shooting just would stop like he or she or whoever was refilling or whatever you call it, reloading, and he said, we knead to get out of here, weve got to get you out of here. We went to another little tempt and stood in there or we laid down in there and again that officer was with me. He was like my Guardian Angel. He never left me. We could hear the shots getting closer, it seemed, and my husband got hit like with some shrapnel and he said, gayle, i think i got some of the i dont know what you call it, lead or something and he put it on my arm and we kind of waited. The shooting stopped. It was like they were refilling or something or reloading and then the officer said we need to get you out of here, but stay low. We went to get out of the back and we could. Get out because there was like a door or something. We pushed it down. He pushed it down for us and we ran. He said stay out of the light. Just run. Keep down, keep down, as were running, there were people lying everywhere. People were bleeding. One guy was holding his girlfriend or wife orwoman and hi was crying and saying, oh, god, baby, im so sorry, im so sorry, its my fault. I think she was shot in the head because he was covered with blood. We ran. There was just ambulances and police cars everywhere. It was heartbreaking. Gayle, you are painting an incredible story. Were all so sorry you had to go through Something Like this. Thank you. It sounds absolutely terrifying. It was. How long did it seem to last to you . It seemed loo eck a long time, maybe over ten minutes, 15. It seemed like forever. Again, it was so fast. Your mind plays tricks on you. Its hard to say. Ive never been so scared in my life ever. Gayle, how many people were in the area where you were watching . It was packed. It was packed. Jason aldean is like the number one singer and he was the last singer for the venue, for the show. Even was having a good time. It with us packed. I dont know. Thousands. It was just packed, you know, everywhere. The officer who helped you, do you know where he is now . No. I saw his face and i ee going to try to go down to metro and see if i can find him and look at his pirs. He saved me, i know, because, you know the girl that got shot was right next to me. I dont know. I wish i could find him. I want to try to find him and say thank you. Metro did an amazing job. That Police Officer like you said a Guardian Angel for you and your husband there. Can you describe the rest of the scene, though, in terms of security . How quickly did you see First Responders run toward the scene and start helping the wounded . Almost immediately. Metro was there. Theyre always right there, you know. Metros such an Amazing Police force. They were right there. Balances were coming. We had balances everywhere. There were police cars everywhere. The Police Officers were helping. The other concertgoers were helping everybody. It was just amazinamazing. We all came together. They were helping everybody. It as wonderful to see. I just love metro. Im so proud of them. A lot of people are giving big kudos to the Las Vegas Police department. It probably wouldnt have made a difference in this sort of shooting but did you have to undergo any security device when you came to this concert . When you walk through, they look at you i dont have anything. I have my chapstick. Go, they look at your back packs and stuff but its very secure. My husband saw the shots from mandalay bay. They were a little by higher. He could see lighting flashing that he saw it. And they say that yeah, he saw where the shooter was. So, yeah. I can tell and i know this is traumatic. Im sure youre still in quite a bit of shock, but have you been able to wrap your brain around the fact that you went to a jason aldean concert of all things and this happened to you. It seems like a movie. I know. I saw jason in San Bernardino last year. My husband senior priced me. We didnt see him and he said lets go see him. We got our wrist bands. It was a wonderful surprise. To have this happen, you know, i just cant wrap my arm around it. And jason posted a facebook message to all of the fans like yourself who were there to see him and we spoke with another performer who was on stage right before him, jake owen, who said he had seen children in the crowds as well sitting on their parents shoulders. Did you get a sense of how many children were at the concert . We know it was around 10 00 p. M. , but clearly there are music fans in all ages and parents do bring them to these kinds of concerts. Yeah. Jasons just a great allaround singer and such a good guy and he has two daughters himself. Brittney, his wife, is expecting a baby in a few months hchls is so wholesome. Everyone loves him. A woman was screaming, i cant find my daughter, i cant find my daughter. I dont know if she did. It with us chaos. It was just crazy. You know, gayle, when we talked to jake earlier, he said he hopes people continue, he ee going to get back on stage and perform, he hopes that anyone at the concert will continue to do so, that we wont let a coward as he says change our way of life. How are you feeling about that . No. Ill still go. Of course, ill go. I think ill be a little more on guard, but you cant foresee Something Like this. You cant expect this. But, you know, ill go again. We all love our country artists, and were all going go again. We love them and support them, especially jason. Gayle, that Police Officer was a hero and your husband was as well to have the peace of mind to recognize they werent firecrackers, that they were, in fact, gunshots, we wish him the best in his recovery from the shrapnel wounds. Thank you. I appreciate it. Your heart goes out to gayle. You can tell shes clearly talking from her heart and shes clearly traumatized by what they went to. And the gratitude for the officer who helped her and her husband. And for jason aldean. Were continuing live coverage of the shooting in las vegas. It was a Country Music festival. There were about 40,000 people there and the gunshots rang down. It was the last day of a threeday concert series. The bullets were coming down from the Mandalay Bay Hotel and casino. The saves shot and Stephen Paddock. Hes now confirmed dead. The police are searching Paddocks Hotel and his home. His wife was found. Jeff pegues has the latest from washington. Jeff . Yeah. Investigators are trying to track down as many people as upon who may have had any type of contact with this suspect. Right now the person they want to get information from is that Marilou Danley who we dont know the extent of their relationship but clearly to law even forcement officials, this is someone who knew this attacker whelm did she know whether or not he was planning something what happened in the last cup of days, weeks, months that led up to this event. Those are some of the things they want to try to get from this person of interest. But we also know he lived in a retirement facility about an hour and a half away from where this shooting unfolded. And so if this was a Retirement Community, is there a staff there that might have some sort of information on him. We know from a quick search of records that he sued or filed a lawsuit against a resort, the Cosmopolitan Hotel and resort in las vegas. He fired a lawsuit against that facility back in 2012. It was dismissed back in 2014. It appears that the basis for the lawsuit was some some of injury where he felt they were negligent. It was dismissed. And then theres this video. You hear the pop, pop, pop. People are trying to figure out where the shots were coming from. You have Law Enforcement responding to the scene and trying to wade through the false information that was on social media at the time which was spreading information about multiple shooters, which the Sheriffs Department dismissed in within of the earlier press conferences, that there was no such thing as multiple shooters to this event. They believe it was a lone shooter, this Stephen Paddock, whos now deceased. But with his death, one obviously very important source of information is now gone, but you can put together a picture of who this guy was. You can get Surveillance Video and im sure theyre doing that from around las vegas and from around that resort. And we also know that they are reaching out to people who were in the crowd. As gail reported, 40,000 people. Thats a stickering number alone. You have cell phones and people taking video and so you have an awful lot of Information Available to investigators. As weve said numerous times and one of the reasons why were repeating this, this is a man who was 4 ye64 years old and wh you look at recent shootings, he doesnt fit the profight. Investigators in so many ways are starting from scratch, although eight hours in they do have a lot of information as they try to track down the mow tevin for this deadly shooting. Theres no motive from what were hearing. A number of injured and the death toll could rise. Bianna . Were bracing for the worst. As well as where he purchased those firearms. Jeff, our thanks to you. Jason ail deed released a message to to his fans. He wrote, tonight has been horrific. I still dote dont know what to say but wantediven to know me and my crew are safe. My thoughts and prayers go out to even tonight. It hurts my heart that this would ha p to anyone that was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. 24yearold justina joins us by the phone. Thanks for talking to us. Im sure youre still shaken up. Tell us what you saw and heard. Thank you for listening to what i have to say. Pretty much what i saw and heard, i heard what evan was, the firecracker noise like the fourth of july. I was standing on the stage, the left wing closer to the stainless. I was looking over and saw it and questioning it. After the initial firecracker nose, 10 or 15 seconds later, jason aldean is bolting off the stage to my right. After that, my boyfriend grabs me and says, lets go now. We bolted off to the closest, i guess, exit we could find. By then theres other people getting an understanding of whats going on. O we hopped two different fences and we started runnings. Jaustina, at first you didnt think anything of it. You saw the smoke and thought it was part of the show because we know he had some pyrotechnics. How long did the gunfire last in your opinion . Total length obviously it felt like a long time, but probably 20 to 30 minutes total. It was unfortunate. There would be a rounl, a slight pause, screaming, another loading. What it sounded like was multiple shooters. It was unloading one, unloading one, unloading one. Did you see people hit by gunfire as you and your boyfriend were escaping . Thankfully i did not. I was on the left side of the stage. Unfortunately the people who were injured or shot were on the right side of the stage and immediately once we heard it our instincts jumped up and we just went east. We newseknew our instincts ts where to go. Jaustina, when you go to the concert im not sure you have in the past are exits marked . Is there app extra nicaragua how to get in and out of the concert . Yes. Di i did attend this festival last year. Everyone knows where to enter. They do it differently every year. You exist on one end of the along lengthwise on the far left side and they do let people off where you enter. There is normally a separate entrance and exist for people. Jaustina, one thing we heard about is the humanity and people helping people, not just the First Responders running in to help the wounded but concertgoers, samaritans, did you see that as well or can you describe that as well . Yeah, i saw a little bit of both. I saw people go frantically, panicking, and people helping. My boyfriend and i had to jump several fences. Where we were jumping were the food vendors. There was a hot stove, poiliboi grease on one side. Im screaming watch the stove, watch the boiling grease. Next thing, im helping a girl over the fence, someones helping me over the fence, my boyfriend was helping others. Everyone trying to get others to safety. Jaustina, have you been at other concerts . I actually was at life is beautiful last weekend. Yeah. Also iheart radio was in the same village where route 91 was and the ninja show, so, yes, i have. So for people unfamiliar with where that is, can you talk about that area . Its a great big open area where theres drinks, food, great music going on, great people. You go, look your besting try to have fun and have a great time. Really its a wide open thing, you know. You have vendors, people selling foods. Definitely big open areas. Jaustina, did you have any concerns about being in a big open area . Unfortunately we know with Ariana Grande in paris there was a shooting. Did you have any concerns, find yourself looking around before the concert . No, maam, i did not. Jake owen joined us earlier. He said, listen, im a guy who writes songs and sings music and i cant wait to get back on stage. How are you thinking . Do you think youd feel safe going to another concert or are you still processing it . Im still processing it. My cars parked at excalibur. E im a little weary thinking about going back too pick it p. But i dont think this incident to this degree doing what we do best, you know what i mean, coming together for music or art or whatever the occasion is, you know. It shouldnt make us run and it shouldnt make us run and hide in a hole. It should bring us all together. Where are you now . Im at home at silverado ranch. A lot of people know of las vegas as a transient place. Las vegas is home for you. Talk about what this means for Something Like this to happen in your hometown, and how does this town, this city, recover and heal and start the Recovery Process . Obviously this is just hours old. Right. Ive been living in vegas for the last two years. Im a graduate of unvb. The police have been letting us know whatever they know. Ive been watching the news nonstop. I think theres been a lot of camaraderie. Just togetherness, you know, everyone coming together. Thats been pretty awesome to see. That in it and working together whats going to let las vegas, nevada, in general come on top of a horrific incident. All right. Jaustina, thank you very much for taking the tam to talk with us and join us this morning. Thank you. Jaustina santos is her name, 24yearold college student. Lets bring back fran downsnd and paul viollis. We say its a very fluid situation. The facts are always changing. Law enforcement said social media did not help, they caused panic by putting out false reports. What do we know and what does that say to you atz a Law Enforcement view . What people need to understand, its a very fluid situation but this individual, f 4yearold, no criminal history, but yet calculated enough to select the type of weapons that would be able to shoot at 400 yards at 32 floors up giving the wind shear, thats a planner, somebody familiar with firearms. The other part is thank god las vegas p. D. Did an excellent job. As fran mentioned earlier and theres no question about it, had that not happened, there would be a lot more parttime. We heard he had some minor ruppin with officials. I like what you said earlier. Just because he doesnt have a criminal record double mean he didnt have a criminal past. Right. What well find as the day progresses and tomorrow is what the Police Actually communicated with him when they rye spomded to his home and how many times. Again, just because theres no record doesnt mean thats no history with respect to the interaction. Clearly it could be that neighbors had called on him. It could be hes caused problems inside a neighborhood where plivgs responded to quell an ins stent, but it will speak to his ment Mental Health . Yes that a layperson could not. No. Thats a good question when you look at the monitor, where mandalay bay is and where the crime scene was, where he was shooting into the concert, youre talking 400 yards, 32 flars up. Taking into account the wind shears that hes gog to have to take account for in order to release that many rounds into that particular field. So the experience, yes, no question about that. The weapon selection goes to his state of mind. These hotels, especially the mandalay bay, fran, you were talking about the security that goes into these places and you talked about atnlding these conferences. The postmortem following up on this tragedy and Going Forward are hotels going to reevaluate guests going in . Especially if a mass event is going to take place feet away from its doors . Its interesting, bianna. When you travel in europe, you recall in the wake of the mumbai attack, they do screen visitors. You go through a metal detector. They didnt do it before . No. That was after the mumbai att k attack. So the problem is yes, they will certainly look at the Lessons Learned and reevaluate it. I staid there. Its also connected to the Convention Center and shopping mall, which means youve got multiple points of entry and exit. It would be difficult to control. Its very hard. Now, the hotel may reconsider when theres a big event whether or not theyre going to try to implement some sort of security maechs the las vegas p. D. And others, they practice this. Homeland security has implored states and locals to practice security drills regularly and that does happen in las vegas. Youre seeing the benefit of that here. There would have been greater fatalities and greater injuries if they had not been so well prepared. The vegas strip is like a giant mall. You would think it would require a quick imagining of the city and the strip in particular. I cant even mentioned. Paul, the question you ask is what do you want . What do you need . Balance. The question as the days and weeks go on, balance. What are we willing to give up if we really want to have a top tier fortified level of security. As fran said, its a really important point here. This particular facility is connected to a mall. So just the points of access into that particular hotel are newseum us are. Do we really want heres the question. Do we really want the level of security no matter what hotel, you have to go through that. Is that something you want . Thats the conversation well have to have. I dont think it is. I dont think the balance of make a guest feel welcome and wanding you at the same time. As fran mentioned, right, we saw a change at mumbai, but we have a different culture in the united states. Thats right. Theyll look to see if theres some compromise. When you look at the size of weapons, it had to come in as luggage. Its not a small handpiece. What they may want to do as a compromise, you cant bring your luggage in through the mall but through the hotel and luggage itself will be screened. That would have picked it up when the guy checked in. Further complicated by the fact its a loner, white man in me cases but this is a retired man who litschs in a Retirement Community. It speaks to the agenda. We talk about proi file. We dont know that yet. Where eight going to come from the is the investigation gone on right now with the websites he visits. What motivated this particular individual. Thats going to break it down to the why. Thats not going to say the largerscale profiling doesnt work many times. This man may have been an outlier. So, paul, theyre looking at looking aet motive. The key is the wife who they now say is identified and located. Talking to her will be key to figuring it out. Theyll have the figure that out. So were looking at the job history and his history. We know there was a lawsuit some years ago. What else . Medication. That i ee going to look at what medication he was on, was he seeing any type of doctor, Mental Health issues. But the biggest part is going to be, two things. Artificial intelligence that they will hopefully have in place in the the u of las vegas which is information that we get from the software that will forensically track where he came from, did he meet with anyone else. Who did he talk to. And cell records. And then sit town and interview them. If we could just take a moment to once again process the number of people who were at this event. 40,000 people. I cant imagine their families whacking up to this news wondering if their loved ones were injured or hurt. Las vegas police say 400 were taken to the hospital and whether or not the hospitals can maintain them. Lets go to the hospital, one of them now, and see the emergency situation which seems to be very fluid. Think i carter evans is outside one of the hospitals with us. Are you with us . Calle reporter yeah, im with you. Im outside a hospital. Its an astounding number. Its over 400. That doesnt necessarily mean it was 400 shot. Some were trampled an effort to escape. Take a look at the hospital. This is the only level 1. 400 were brought to the Trauma Center. 38 have been trietd. 8 have been operated on. 12 are still in very critical condition. Gayle. Thank you, carter. Its been described as the deadliest shooting in u. S. History. Well have more details. Well be right back. Honey, what are you doing . Watching a cow. . Whats it doing .
