As you can see, there are also two red zones, one along the ben franklin parkway, the other surrounding independence hall, both include security screenings, fencing, no vehicles. Some have certainly directly asked why do we create this traffic box . Quite frankly, it is not really an issue related to protecting pope francis n reality to protect the millions of people who will be walking on our wonderful but narrow city streets and our sidewalks. The citys also working on a plan to help businesses affected by the popes visit, and for taxies to drive in and out of the traffic box, until early saturday, september 26th. Now one local organization is offering volunteers a chance to be part of that history in the making. Reporter nicole, erika, good morning, the American Red Cross here in philadelphia needs 1,000 volunteers for the popes visit. This is actually going to be a very busy area come the ends of september. This is home base. This is operation center, during the popes visit, and the motto is simple if you have the will, the red cross will find a way to put to you work. The Red Cross Emergency Communications center on Chestnut Street is always busy. Volunteers here, answer hundreds of emergency calls, every day, and dispatch crews across the country. This job wont stop during the papal visit in september. Instead, red cross volunteers, will face the added task of aiding the mass that is follow the popular pope. Philadelphias expecting more than a million people. Year going to need as many volunteers as we can find. Tom, volunteer for close to four decades. The red cross now looking for people with his compassion and willingness to learn. The Organization Needs 1,000 volunteers, to man the shelters, provide Health Services and more. A lot of the work that we do can be taught. We are really encouraging people to go on line and register, so that we can get them trained. Those with specialized skills are a bonus. Multi link all, volunteers trained in medicine, and those with skills in child and geriatric care are specially needed. Young children, and the elderly, who will get disoriented and separate from the their families. So we really want people who have those kind of talents. And because travel will be limited in and around the traffic box, the red cross will also shelter and feed it volunteers, the Communications Center here look much different. It will be packed. Now, we heard about from the noah representative there, that back in 1997, early 80s, we had very strong el nino then, too, remember, looking bare here to 1997 values there is bright white, red coloring, indicating thats where you had some of the warmest sea surface temperatures around the equator, this is the projection, actually whats going on right now over the central pacific. How does that actually impact the weather . In a very strong way. It leads to very strong pacific jet stream, which can actually split to a southern and Northern Branch it, causes that jet stream to move off to the north, what you will ends up have happening here, is that you will likely get some very beneficial rainout toward the places that are affected with the drought. But it may come too soon, too fast, to the point that mudslides, landslides, all of that, become very real concern. How does it affect our region . Because you have this split, youre generally talking about milder weather in the northeastern united state. We could also pick up a lot of moisture out of this, that could lead to maybe early season heavy rain, potential then for mid to late season, in winter specifically, for some bigger snow events. So, just casino of all depend on how the atmosphere shakes out. But thats a trend, that a lot of times, tends to pan out, when you have got an el nino season. Weve obviously come off very brutal winters as of late. So mild is her good, but not necessarily getting rid of the moisture with the kind of a pattern. Now there is pattern, this is hot.
