Kicked up this morning in our parking lot. Is it going to be that way all day a little bit of an offshore maybe slight slight 50s for some 40s for others. We are looking for warmer temps today. Im getting right to it. Its a clear out there and its going to be sunny and warmer. So if you want temps that are bumping up in the 70s to near 80, today is one of your days. All right. Sal is here and hopefully its quiet. Sometimes not. But well ask the man himself. Yeah, you know, it is quiet, which is nice. We dont we dont like surprises at this or what time is it . 4 00. Oh my goodness, steve, its early. I know. Yeah. We dont like surprises at this hour, lets go and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. You can see that traffic looks good. And you can see also traffic on the san mateo bridge. Commute is doing well. Yesterday we had some issues here in Contra Costa County. Today it seems like a good start. 401 lets get back to the headlines. Thank you. Sal topping our news this morning. Overnight police in washington, d. C. Cleared out a propalestinian encampment at George Washington university. It was after midnight when d. C. Police forced protesters to leave the campus. The University Says it had asked the city to intervene for days, but that d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser had initially refused, saying people have the right to protest. A member of congress who walked through the encampment yesterday said jewish students he spoke with said it made them feel uncomfortable. I talked to the jewish students here just minutes ago. They told me theyre afraid to be on their campus. Theyre scared. Mayor bowser has been called to testify before Congress Today about the citys response to the encampment. Well, demonstrators across the nation urged israel to end its offensive in rafah. The Israeli Military says it has seized control of that Border Crossing at the southern edge of gaza, protesters from seattle to austin, texas, and atlanta took part in whats called hands off rafah rallies is now here in the bay area. Demonstrators in berkeley joined the protesters at uc berkeley, sproul plaza, thats where people have been camping out for days. Ktvu tori gaines talk to some of the protesters whove increased their demands. All eyes on you. All eyes on you. We will never leave you here at uc berkeley, hundreds of students, staff, faculty, alumni and Community Members filled sproul plaza with chants for revolution in response to israels attacks on rafah. Its been nearly two weeks since the propalestine encampment sprouted up at cal, and the number of tents has grown. A lot of people from different faiths, from different ethnic backgrounds, from different political beliefs, all here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact and power to stop some faculty members on campus stood and chanted side by side with their students in calling for divestment. So many of us are sort of forced to be complicit with, you know, illegal, immoral war that is being waged on innocent populations in our name with our funds. Demonstrators in support of palestine have been particularly vocal on uc berkeleys campus. While some students feel empowered by the demonstrations, others see them in a different light. Ive never felt more ostracized or isolated ever in my life, nor have i ever felt such an overwhelming feeling of anxiety and distress. S simply just existing. Just simply being in my existence as a jewish american. Though some students are struggling with the new reality on campus, one faculty member tells us he has full faith in his students. This is the best Public School in the world. Why wouldnt we trust these students to understand how to negotiate with their administration . What are just unnecessary demands . Do we trust our youth or not . And i think that i do as you can see, the encampment is still here, going strong. Students and other demonstrators here at the encampment tell us that they are willing to stay here as long as it takes to see their divestment goals met. We reached out to uc berkeley for comment on todays rally, but the university had no statement to offer in berkeley. Tori gaines, ktvu, fox two news. All right, tori, thank you. Time is now 404. The Biden Administration says israels move to take over the rafah crossing between gaza and egypt is not the full scale invasion of the city. Israel said it would carry out. Yesterday, an israeli tank brigade closed the rafah crossing. Israel says the Border Crossing had been used by hamas, so it was important to shut it down. This was a, a very limited operation designed to cut off, hamass ability to smuggle more weapons and funding into gaza. Now, the Biden Administration has been discouraging israel from launching a full scale ground operation in rafah. Thats where a 1 million displaced palestinians have taken shelter. The United States reportedly paused a shipment of bombs to israel last week over the concerns they would be used in an assault on rafah, Stanford University is reminding students that the encampment at white plaza violates university policies. Now, Officials Say it goes against a policy on overnight camping and on the equitable use of the plaza. The University Says discipline cases are proceeding and more names of students are being submitted. Some may have their diplomas held while their cases are processed, and stanford is warning encampment members. They could be suspended. Our time is now 406 happening today. Testimony in front of congress by the superintendent of the Berkeley Unified School district surrounding allegations of antisemitism in her schools. Now, superintendent nikki ford. An arrest was made and a man is now in jail after he ran a red light at a busy intersection in san jose and killed a cyclist. It happened yesterday morning at east capitol expressway and center road around 730 in the morning. Investigators say the driver of this red pickup truck was going westbound on capitol expressway and was speeding when he ran a red light. The truck first hit a cyclist and then hit another pickup truck. The man on the bike died there at the scene. Traffic was shut down for hours in all directions. I think everybody just needs to be aware. I think road safety is everyones responsibility, so it includes being defensive on your own, right . Im not sure that theres a whole lot that the bicyclist could have done here. If youre following the rules of the road. Somebody wasnt. And unfortunately, thats what occurred. Now, this was the 17th fatal collision in san jose. So far this year. And police say that particular intersection is among the most dangerous in the city for the number of crashes every year. Now, san jose mayor matt mehan, in a statement said, quote, these deaths are far too often the consequence of distracted and reckless driving, and i applaud the work of our Police Department and District Attorney who will arrest and prosecute those who put residents at risk on our roadways. Filmmaker john waters is recovering after a car crash. Waters is known for cold classics like pink flamingos and crybaby. He was hit by a cargo van in maryland this week, a report by the Baltimore Sun says the driver of the van ran a red light and rammed into waters 2015 buick lacrosse. He was kept in the hospital overnight in response to the accident, the 78 year old said, quote, it hurts when i laugh, but all is okay. Our time is now. 409 will bay area drivers have a tough time . Two bay area cities made the top of the list of the worst cities in the country for drivers. Oakland was named as the worst city in the nation for drivers. San francisco came in number three. The study, conducted by forbes advisor, evaluated driving conditions across 47 densely populated cities. The city of oakland had the top spot for several reasons, including a high number of deadly crashes, very high gas prices, and long commute times. Miami came in number two. Houston was number four. Today is National Wine walk, bike and roll to school day to mark the occasion, marin, santa clara and solano counties are holding special events for students in petaluma. Extra Police Officers will be in and around multiple school zones as part of a safe routes to School Safety operation, so watch out for all those kids walking and rolling to school today. All right, lets check in Steve Paulson. Lots of sunshine today on the menu and warmer temps here. A little bit of a northerly breeze is kicking in as a little low starts to backtrack towards southern cal. Well actually Southern Arizona, but you can see a little northerly breeze. Not too crazy, although mount tam north at 31, thats a north wind up in the Oakland Berkeley hills north at 34 right above the claremont. So thats going to translate into warmer temps. Fairfield north gusting to 23. Santa rosa north. So temps are on their way up. Start a little bit yesterday. Itll be more so today. Probably topping out thursday. Upper 80s is the way its kind of looking here. 40s 50s 60s if you get a breeze. Napa airport its 63. Vacaville 63. And otherwise you get 40s and 50s a little cooler up towards, some areas to mendocino county, lake county, but middletown and konocti are in the 50 sonoma napa. Theres your north breeze, 60s. Although healdsburg is at 46 point, rays at 46. So theres some cool ones and theres some warm ones here. 2333 truckee, south lake tahoe, 70 already in palm springs, arcadia at 39 degrees. My goodness. High pressure though this is a dry pattern this week. And what happens is this low will backtrack a little bit. A piece of it will. It looks like its going to stay in Southern Arizona or Southern Nevada, Northern Arizona and not drag drag across Southern California. But still, well get a warmer pattern here. Summer like pattern here. Sunny and warmer and no fog coast. Even the coast will warm up, so look for 60s 70s and some 80s. San franciscos taking action to better protect first responders. The effort to change how firefighters gear is made. Plus with covid, lets go soccer fans were out in the south bay for a match between the oakland roots and the san Jose Earthquakes. Why . This could be the start of wide ban. The social media app and its Chinese Parent Company have filed a lawsuit against the us. Their suit challenges a new law that could ban the app in america if its not sold to a new buyer within nine months. Tiktok officials argue the law is an unconstitutional attack on free speech. However, lawmakers feel tiktok poses a National Security risk. Theyre trying to make it about free speech. This bill was focused on National Security that tiktok is a destructive tool pointed at the United States of america, and especially our children. No constitutional right to own property when it is against the National Security. Tiktoks Parent Company says it currently has no plans to sell if tiktok loses this lawsuit and refuses to find a new owner, it could disappear from american app stores. Our time is now. 415 President Biden approved a new law that strengthens penalties for websites and social Media Companies that fail to report sex and abuse crimes against children. This is the first time the platforms have been required to report federal trafficking and enticement crimes to the National Center for missing and exploited children. The law increases the fines on companies that knowingly or willfully dont report child sex abuse materials, and the evidence of these crimes is now required to be preserved longer, allowing more time for investigations. Well, thousands of fans headed to paypal park for a big game between the oakland roots and the san Jose Earthquakes. It was the first competitive match between the two teams, and the quakes took home the victory. But as ktvu Lamonica Peters tells us, the fans say they hope its not the last time these two teams play each other. With bay area bragging rights on the line. San Jose Earthquakes fans say they were looking forward to playing the roots. I was with san jose from going long back before the roots even started, but, and im also on this side of the bay, so its an easier commute for me. The lamar hunt us open cup gives semipro teams like the oakland roots a chance to play Major League Soccer teams like the san Jose Earthquakes. This is the first time the teams played one another in a competitive match. This earth quakes fan says he loves dressing up for games, and the idea of playing a crosstown rival. The rivalry is always good for two teams because the both teams will grow, especially oakland being right next to us and oakland staying at the bay because everyone else are gone. Oakland roots fans also made their presence known at the earthquakes home game, sitting together in one section, chanting and waving flags. Im here because the roots need our support. They need us to be here. They need us to shout out. Thats how here roots fans also say this matchup is another way to show how much they want teams to stay in oakland. The fans. We never quit, so were going to haunt john fisher to the end of eternity no matter where he goes. He owns the san Jose Earthquakes. Were here being from oakland, theres some hard feelings with john fisher that owns the as and the earthquakes, so theres a little extra motivation there for us. I think now this is the fourth round and after more games are played on wednesday, there will be 16 teams left in the tournament. The earthquakes will either play the Sacramento Republic or the monterey bay football club. Lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news thank you. Lamonica. Well, the giants play the second game of their series in denver later today. The giants were looking to avoid another loss after dropping four straight in philadelphia in the series opener against the rockies last night. Rookie Kyle Harrison pitched seven scoreless innings and the offense finally seemed to wake up with a four run inning. Giants snapped a four game losing streak with a50 win against the rockies. The as will play a doubleheader at the coliseum against the Texas Rangers today. The as look to bounce back after losing the series opener, but the rangers put on a show in front of about 4000 fans in oakland, texas set a season high with 19 hits. They also had 15 runs. As lost 15 to 8, their Third Straight loss after going on a six game winning streak. Our time now for 18. The San Jose Sharks will have the number one pick in this years nhl draft. For the first time in the sharks history. I take it theyre excited. The first pick is expected to be Macklin Celebrini from boston university, who is also the son of warriors head of Sports Medicine rick celebrini. The sharks will also have the 14th overall pick in the draft. The draft will be held june 28th at the las vegas sphere, where they could certainly use that number one draft pick. And hes supposed to be really good. Yeah, yeah, i know steve would would agree. The sharks could use use a little help. Deserved a number one pick. Its the sharks. Seriously. Yes. So thats a good pick. Theyll get celebrini for sure. He has san jose and local ties. Yeah its awesome. Yeah. So good for the sharks. They need a boost of some good energy there. And they got it. All right. Were warming up here and temperatures will start to jump. I mean inland temps maybe by thursday could bump up to near 90 for some. Although theres a huge discrepancy between the gfs and the other couple of what we call the forecast temps on the model output. So well well ease into it. Itll warm up. Theres a decent north breeze, especially in the Oakland Berkeley hills. Its already kicked in out to fairfield as well. Santa rosa north and everythings coming down from the north is that little piece of energy from this low is backtracking. Thats kind of the key little piece of this is going to drop. It looks like it wants to settle in around las vegas and not back into Southern California or central. That makes a huge difference. Everything ive seen puts it in Southern Nevada or Northern Arizona, which, you know, we still get an offshore breeze, but not a roaring one, is the way it looks for so far, the water temps are incredibly cold. Point race 50, San Francisco bowie 50. When we get these warm temps, all it will take is a little push from a west wind and that fog will roar back, but probably not for a couple of days. 40s, 50s to 60s, napa and vacaville, both at 63 brentwood, 62. Pittsburgh 61 because they have that north breeze, but a lot of 40s, 50s on the temps. 2333 truckee, south lake tahoe, 31 alturas and also mammoth grass valley, though at 50. So for the next couple of days its all about sunshine, dry conditions and warmer temps. I do think though, with that cold, cold ocean temps it wont take much to get the fog back, but it wont be until probably friday, maybe saturday as the way it looks. Nothing showing up rain wise yet. I think we have to wait till around the 21st before any hint shows up. So its a dry pattern for a while. It makes sense. You know were getting long in the season here, but warmer for all, sunny and warmer, a little northerly breeze and 70s and 80s on the thames. All right. See you. Thank you. Time is 421. While that family was driving, and if it sees multiple complaints, about an activity or a performance issue that appear to be similar, and particularly if they, create severe risk, these are the circumstances under which nhtsa will, conduct an initial or preliminary evaluation. Now dating back to last summer, there have been eight other complaints about that car, which is made by the vietnamese automaker vinfast at least three of them mentioned steering and lane assist problems. A spokesperson for vinfast issued a statement. It reads in part, vinfast is aware of this tragic accident and our hearts go out to the family. The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and will share their findings when their work is complete and a driver is facing several felony charges in connection to two separate hit and runs in San Francisco. Now, Authorities Say a white mustang was spinning donuts in the intersection of jones and market in the tenderloin district yesterday morning. Thats where the driver hit the first pedestrian and took off. Officers tried to pull over the car, but the driver kept going. There was a police chase that passed by Francisco Middle School and police say the driver of the mustang then hit a 14 Year Old Girl in a crosswalk on her way to school. Based on the fact that the individual fled the scene after hitting a pedestrian and continued to drive recklessly and failed to stop at another vehicle collision involving a juvenile pedestrian, he posed a risk to the public. Lets go back over to steve for a look at our weather. What should we know today . Warming up. Thats the key here. Not only inland but also coast and bay. This will probably take us into thursday. Friday. Then i have to think the fog will come back. Thats my 0. 02 here. But temps are bumping up here. San rafael, San Francisco, menlo park and los gatos all bumping up 82, 74, 81 and 80 on the forecast sides. The city 64 yesterday averages about 6364. Looks like thursday will be the warmest day. Its always a tricky forecast because theres you could do about 4 or 5 forecasts in San Francisco. But this is the official number. And ill tell you when that fog comes back, id rather forecast rain than when that fog comes back. Pretty good little north breeze ill say Richmond North at 16, davis point north at 15. Even out towards pittsburgh northwest 15 Oakland Berkeley hills, north wind the city as a north wind to 16. So i think you get the idea. Fairfield north gusting to 23. Santa rosa north novato north. So were in plays but those water temps are really cold. 50 point rays 50 San Francisco boy, it will not take long to get the fog going, but it needs some help and that wont arrive until probably the weekend 40s, 50s and 60s 60s for napa airport, vallejo, vacaville and brentwood. Yet walnut creeks 46. So theres some big spreads on those temps here. 40 to the south as well, mid to upper 40s. Although Boulder Creek is right at 40 degrees and 48, campbell 49 saratoga. Theyll be in the low 80s today, 27 truckee 33. South lake tahoe 39. Arcadia to 26. In elko, some cold readings there, but 40s, 50s and 60s up and down the coast here. Lots of sunshine, offshore breeze so dry pattern in place for a while. Probably next hint of anything is until the 21st or so. A little bit of a low will backtrack into probably Southern Nevada as the way it looks. So wind is a northerly direction, and that means were going to warm up this time of year. Its a slam dunk, as we like to say, 70s and 80s on those temps. Probably pushing some upper 80s. If it isnt thursday, itll be friday. Then it does look cooler for many coast and bay starting on the weekend. Thank you steve. Tiktok is now suing the us government. Sal berkeley, superintendent of schools, will be part of a congressional hearing today on antisemitism. The district has been accused of poorly handling cases of bullying and harassment of jewish students since the hamas attack on israel. Ktvu james torres is in berkeley this morning previewing what we can expect to see from the us capitol this morning. James yeah, pam, its a hearing thats led by the u. S. House committee on education and the workforce. That group of lawmakers held some similar hearings on antisemitism with leaders of major Public School universities. But this will be the first time that theyll be asking questions and holding a hearing when it comes to antisemitism within public k through 12 schools. Now, these types of hearings have happened often ever since we first learned about the hamas attacks on israel on october 7th. And, of course, israels retaliation in gaza. Since berkeley superintendent initiate ford morthal is one of three School Leaders across the country called to testify in front of this House Committee. Shell be expected to answer questions alongside representatives from a School District in maryland as well as new york. In berkeley, complaints have been led by the Brandeis Center for human rights and the antidefamation league. They argue, be used ignored incidents where jewish students were taunted and exposed to language such as kill the jews or kill israel. Their complaints note an incident where an art teacher showed images of people punching through a star of david as well. All here because we believe that the genocide going on in gaza right now is something that we have the power to impact and the power to stop now. Protests organizers want the university to divest its Financial Holdings in companies that have ties to israels military. See meantime, the Biden Administration says israels move to take control of the rafah crossing between gaza and egypt is not the full scale invasion of gaza. Israel said it would carry out yesterday, an israeli tank brigade closed the rafah crossing. Israel says the Border Crossing had been used by hamas, so it was important to shut it down. This was a, a very limited operation designed to cut off, hamass ability to smuggle more weapons and funding into gaza. The Biden Administration has been discouraging israel from launching a full scale ground operation in rafah. Thats where more than a million displaced palestinians have taken shelter. But napa airport is plus 14, and thats because they have a north northeast breeze. Santa rosa, petaluma plus four. But so far most locations are. Its a push. High pressure though winds out dry pattern here. Now the low which is going to back a piece of its going to break off and end up in Southern Nevada. It doesnt look like its going to end up in california. If it did, i think wed get even more of an offshore breeze. But its there and its enough. So warmer for all of the day. North breeze temperatures will be in the 70s for many to near 80, or even some low to mid 80s. All right. Thank you steve San Francisco taking action to better protect first responders. Looks good. However theres some slowing already coming in over the altamont pass. 530 lets get back to the headlines. Okay, sal. Thank you. Well, San FranciscoSchool Board Members held an emergency meeting about the School Districts budget crisis. It came just days after the School District found out that california education officials will now have veto power over some of the School Districts financial decisions. Ktvu is ali rasmus is in our newsroom now to tell us more about this. Good morning ali. Good morning dave. Yeah, the biggest problem for the San FranciscoUnified School District, its budget deficit expected to be 420 million by next year. The district has known about that budget hole for a while, but now the California Department of education says it doesnt trust that the district can make the right decisions to correct it. State officials sent a letter to sfusd on friday, letting them know that it is assigning some fiscal advisors to the district, and those advisors will have approval and veto power over the districts budget decisions for the next two years so that it can recover financially. Also talked about at the meeting last night, an outside report from another state agency that detailed some of the districts financial problems, among them the fact that sfusd doesnt have a chief Business Officer and hasnt had one in a few years. At the Board Meeting last night, several parents and Community Members were upset. You havent had a Financial Officer for years. Page nine calls out the overuse of consultants. Why are we not managing this better . Youre going to close schools instead of fix whats going on down there to budget ineffectively is a moral failing. So what happens next . There will inevitably be steep budget cuts, School Closures and likely an increase in class sizes across sf. Usd enrollment has declined at the district, and that trend, which is happening at Public Schools statewide, is expected to accelerate in San Francisco in coming years. The board has formed a subcommittee to discuss the budget problems and what cuts to make at another meeting plan next week in the public will have a chance to weigh in and comment at that meeting on may 15th. Pam. Thank you. Ali San Francisco voters could decide on a proposal to simplify the citys tax code for Small Businesses. Its all part of an effort to revitalize the city. Transportation officials gathered in the east bay to see the glide ways glide car. Ktvu tom vacar tells us its all part of a new Mass Transit System that will soon take off in Contra Costa County. Thank you. At san ramons bishop ranch roadhouse tuesday, the ninth annual redefining mobility summit showed off what it calls the Autonomous Vehicle of the future. And the star of the show, the glide aways glide car, part of a scalable, expandable Mass Transit System coming soon. This is something that you can actually see and feel and experience later in a few minutes. When fully completed, the system will be 28 miles long. The dedicated narrow roadway system will stretch from antioch to oakley, with 56 boarding stations. The first phase is about four and a half to five miles, but connecting antioch bart station to brentwood. That first phase will open in three years, with 200 autonomous glide cars servicing points or stations, as theyre called. Every few blocks along the dedicated concrete pathway. And so you can take a glide car in the future by walking maybe five minutes, going to an access point, which is a station, a glide phase station. Once at the pick up point, you use your app to hail a driverless glide car, much as you would an uber or lyft, a car dedicated to your trip and your trip only for a party of up to four or baggage or a bike. And it takes you to the antioch bart station without ever stopping. Always a predictable journey time because building this, even with a dedicated pathway, is very light construction. It can be done very quickly and it can be done far, far cheaper than dedicated rail systems. And in that sense it is superior. Its way, way cheaper than putting in railway tracks. If it costs 1 billion a mile to build a 28 mile system, thats 28 billion. Thats just math. Our system is going to cost a fraction, ten, 20 of that. Another glide waste project is to set up a system to connect san jose airport to rail transit. Tom vacar, ktvu, fox two news. All right. Thank you, tom.
