Closing arguments wrapped up in washington today over whether google illegally maintained a monopoly by paying companies to prioritize their Search Engine on devices. Ktvu Jana Katsuyama has more now on the possible ramifications for the company. The department of justice antitrust lawsuit against google finally reached closing arguments friday. What happens in this case is really going to determine the future of, you know, the really the next 20 years of the internet. Mitch stoltz with the Nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation says the case could impact the choices consumers have in the future. The Justice Department argued that google illegally kept a monopoly over the Search Engine business by spending 20 billion a year with companies such as apple, in order to be the default Search Engine on devices. Its telling that google was spending upwards of 20 billion a year on deals to keep Google Search the default Search Engine in various mobile operating systems and web browsers. And that was more money than they spend on research and development. Google attorneys argue that companies such as apple chose them because google has the best product, and that its easy enough for consumers to download a different Search Engine. But exclusive distribution agreements can make competition difficult, even for big companies, according to Santa Clara University law professor eric goldman, Microsofts Bing has competed with google for apples deal and has not been successful. So what chance does a company thats even smaller than a microsoft who might be a new player in the industry, have to go and dislodge a major player like google . Goldman says if the judge rules google is an illegal monopoly. There is a wide range of punishments. You could imagine mandating some kind of choice. You could prevent the distribution agreements altogether. You could impose significant financial consequences on this. You could require apple to do some other kind of competition or beauty show in order to pick its winner. Goldman says the most extreme measure would be in order to break up google, but one concern is whether any remedies will hinder future growth in the industry. The technology will keep moving, but the remedy doesnt evolve and it gets out of sync. It is expected the federal judge will issue a ruling by late summer or early fall. From the newsroom Jana Katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. San jose is launching a partnership with an ai company to expand their Translation Services for public meetings. Wardley offers live translations in 50 languages and will soon be available at all city council and committee meetings. It will cost 82,000 a year, compared to 400,000 for live interpreters. The city clerks hope the services will encourage more Public Participation from nonenglish speakers. The city has been working to improve translation accessibility after an incident last year where Spanish Speaking residents were moved to a separate room to listen to the meeting. It could become San Franciscos First Entertainment zone. The citys mayor is hoping to create a new hot spot in the middle of the financial district, as ktvu is christian, captain shows us, some Business Owners are hopeful this plan will bring a big boost to the city. San franciscos mayor is proposing legislation to turn this section of front street between sacramento and california into the citys First Entertainment zone. We want to put a smile, filled with joy on the faces of san franciscans and the people who live and work here. Overall, the zone would allow bars and restaurants to sell alcohol during outdoor events. Duncan ley reopened harringtons bar and grill just before Saint Patricks day, after it had been closed for about four years. He says while business is okay midweek, it falls off dramatically over the weekends. He says an entertainment zone would help the opportunity to activate a street like this so easily, and then to have people spill out into the street from the business and back in and just create this free flow of energy and entertainment, it seems, is really exciting as a as a business owner, right. The mayor says the legislation is part of her plan to revitalize the downtown. My 30 by 30 plan to bring 30,000 students and residents to downtown by 2030. And some excitement of residents, businesses, restaurants. But fun has to be a part of the mix. And what is more fun than creating an entertainment zone state senator scott wiener authored sb 76, allowing San Francisco to create the entertainment zone and says it wont mean nonstop mardi gras. I saw a headline this morning about bourbon street. And yes, new orleans is a lot of fun. Nashville is a lot of fun, but there are a bunch of states that have done this michigan, ohio. So i believe new jersey visitors to the area like these business students from uc berkeley say its a great idea. The city is quiet now. A lot of people are moving out to the south bay. So if this is the way to keep the Younger Generation and make it like a fun place, that would be such a good idea. But not everyone is so sure itll work. Its definitely interesting. And they do something down here. Its been pretty bad. I mean, im not sure how many people are going to make it all the way down here. Its kind of pretty far from all the other entertainment in the city, right now. San francisco is the only city that can have these kinds of entertainment zones. But state senator scott wiener is working on legislation to change that so that other cities can have entertainment zones if they want to. In San Francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news.
