For the first time, children brought into the United States by undocumented immigrants will be allowed to apply for Affordable Health care. The Biden Administration made the announcement this morning. Ktvu james torres explains the new rule and how it will affect people here in california. When i came in 2005 at the age of five years old, Yesenia Solis found out this morning she will now be qualified to shop for health insurance, something shes never had living in the u. S, meaning any visit to the doctor cost a lot. A lot of, home remedies, a lot of trying to hope, you know, drinking teas and whatnot. So things never had to go to the case of having to go to the doctor. Thats because shes a daca recipient, meaning she was brought into the country as a child by undocumented immigrants. Hundreds of thousands of Daca Recipients across the country dont have health insurance. If their jobs dont offer it, they cant get in on government sponsored programs. Thats going to change. This is going to benefit up to 100,000 people. Zach cohn is an immigration attorney in washington, dc, a job hes passionate about. My father was a colombian immigrant, a new rule by the Biden Administration will let people like jessenia get access to health care. For the first time ever, those Daca Recipients can shop and buy a health plan through the Affordable Care act. In our state, we call that covered california. And these are also people who dont have criminal history and have, committed themselves to education and at minimum, a High School Diploma and have been in the United States since they were 2007, since 2007, and since theyve been children. Today, yesenia is a Community Organizer and a graduate from uc berkeley, currently working on her masters at sac state. She says this opportunity is a Long Time Coming and hopes its only one step toward expanding Daca Recipients rights. This is not to say that this isnt, valuable because it definitely is impactful and it gives a lot of resources, especially for taking care of our physical health. But i think we deserve this and we deserve so much more. This new change goes into effect in november, when open enrollment for the next year begins. Im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. The rule does not allow Daca Recipients to apply for medicaid. However, a decision from Governor Newsom earlier in the year expanded medical to all undocumented immigrants in our state. While lawmaker lists his demands in a letter to the feds, then caught on video, masked men drive up to try to steal a car in broad daylight in oakland. How the incident escalat when one person t debris on campus after the propalestinian encampment was demolished, more than 200 people were arrested after a tense standoff between police and protesters, many of them now facing charges of Unlawful Assembly that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail or a 1,000 fine. A Southern California lawmakers requesting a formal investigation into possible civil Rights Violations at ucla during this weeks demonstrations in los angeles, Assembly Member rick chavez, zbur, sent a letter to the u. S. Department of education that outlines his concerns on how ucla responded to protests and counter demonstrations on campus this week, letter says, in part on all counts, ucla has failed to uphold its most important responsibility, which is to protect the safety, wellbeing and civil rights of all of its students, freedom of speech and freedom to peacefully protest are fundamental pillars of our democracy. But violence, harassment and intimidation are not speech and have no place on campus or anywhere. Students at usc are being invited to a Graduation Party next week after the university canceled its main Commencement Ceremony. The cancellation came in response to protests and the controversy when the university told its valedictorian she would not be allowed to give a traditional speech. Yesterday, usc said it would instead hold a trojan family graduate celebration at the coliseum featuring drone shows, fireworks and live entertainment, including the usc marching band. Administrators at Stanford University have sent a photo to the fbi of someone wearing a headband thats normally worn by hamas fighters, University Spokesperson says. A wave of campus activism in support of gaza is not only dividing students and staff, but also creating divisions within political parties. Lawmakers in washington are all over the spectrum on how the protests should be handled. Well get more now from rebecca castor, the nypd are out in force friday morning, arresting dozens of protesters at two new york schools. There is some Organization Behind this movement. There is somebody funding this. There is somebody radicalizing our students. And most lawmakers in washington want to shut it down. These people are saying that theyre trying to liberate palestine, but theyre yelling heil hitler and thats completely inappropriate. These antisemitic protest sites have got to stop. Earlier this week, the house passed a bipartisan bill that would pave the way for universities that allow antisemitic speech to lose federal funding. But some republicans and democrats take issue with the broad definition of antisemitism used in the bill and say it infringes on free speech and fair criticism of israel. There are things that are being called antisemitic, that are not antisemitic. We also need to educate ourselves about that. This also targets christians. And, you know, says that christians could be labeled as antisemitic. That bill is now in the hands of the senate, but so far, its the only action taken by washington since the College Protests erupted. President biden has condemned the violence, but his department of justice hasnt announced any civil rights investigations into these universities, even as many jewish students say they feel unsafe on campus. I got spit at, yelled at. They were trying to take my picture. Theyre definitely trying to intimidate us, get us to leave. But what we really need, though, is moral clarity and leadership on campus and out of the white house. We have laws on the books that just need to be enforced. So far, the university of Southern California is the only university to cancel its main Commencement Ceremony because of the protests. But others say theyre increasing security and Safety Measures to prevent disruptions in washington. The two were discussing how to handle repaying National Enquirer publisher david pecker for squashing allegations by former playboy model Karen Mcdougal of her alleged affair with trump. But just how damaging the recording can be for trumps defense remains unclear, having reported evidence with Donald Trumps voice is pretty evidence against him. I dont think that the president first of all, said enough, said enough that that is damaging. Whether the former president will testify in the trial himself remains unclear, Elissa Harrington testified. No, he wont stop me from testimony. The gag order is not for testify. The gag order stops me from talking about people and responding when they say things about me. We have people saying things about me, and im not allowed to respond. Hopes the fed could lower Interest Rates this fall. Edward lawrence has more from washington, d. C. Cream biscuits and u. S. Job growth slowed sharply in april, while the Unemployment Rate unexpectedly rose, a sign that high Interest Rates and inflation are starting to weigh on the labor market. The economy added 175,000 new jobs last month, fewer than march and a five month low. The Unemployment Rate rose to 3. 9. That job gain number is actually higher than the average in 2019. This is a solid report, and its exactly, i think, what wall street and the fed want to see that inflation is coming down. The labor market is not the main source of inflation. Some of the losses were in administration and support services losing 22,700 jobs. Now within that temporary help services lost 16,400 jobs. Manufacturing has added 8000 jobs, but over the past three months, manufacturing lost 5000 jobs. Meanwhile, the number of people working or looking for work remained about the same.
