Well, all were really hearing this morning are just the bells, the top of the hour at here at Stanford Universitys campus. Behind me, you can see the number of tents that are still here and have been here since thursday, but not too much activity going on. Not a lot of noise being made at this hour here. But heres what were learning from the folks here. These student protesters now saying that they have the support of the student body. Well show you what the demonstrations on stanfords campus have looked like over the last couple of days. One of the groups represented here, students for justice in palestine, say the schools student body voted overwhelmingly in favor of a Ballot Initiative calling for israeli divestment. Just like at many other campuses across the country where you see these protests, the people here say schools have investments in Companies Like Lockheed Martin, chevron or hewlett packard, and they accuse each of those for contributing to israeli attacks in gaza. One man who approached the protests over the weekend says he hopes all of those demonstrations, at least what weve seen here, continue to remain peaceful. When i look at these kids, i fear for i fear for their safety, and i hope that they will be allowed to exercise their First Amendment without the risk of being, kind of retaliated against or being arrested or being harassed or being harmed. This morning, ktvu did reach out to some of the Companies Mentioned by those protesters. A spokesperson from Lockheed Martin issued a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the u. S. Government and allies to deliver Strategic Deterrence and security solutions. Weve yet to hear directly from Stanford University, but we know School Administration told students theyre in violating, rather in violation of its protest policies, mostly because of those overnight encampments are not allowed. We also know the school asked for those tents to be gone by friday night, or else those people would face consequences in the form of issues with the office of student conduct and even arrests. We have seen Law Enforcement officers here in the last few days, but no reports of arrests at this time. Now its not clear how much of an influence a student body support or vote would have on the universitys board of trustees, who ultimately would make a decision on any divestment conversations. A demonstration is also planned on the campus of San Francisco state later today. Organizers say the noontime rally is meant to be a show of support for the people of palestine. It is the latest demonstration planned for the bay area, calling for an end to u. S. Military aid to israel. Theyre also calling on the schools president to refrain from calling police to campus to deal with the protesters, as well as refrain from any retaliation against students. And this morning, increased Police Patrols continue on the ucla campus. Following a weekend of tense and sometimes violent protests. He was about to go. Several fights broke out on campus yesterday between propalestinian demonstrators and proisrael counterprotesters. The violence came amid a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students. While at the usc campus, police in riot gear returned this weekend after propalestinian demonstrators returned with tents. They reestablished their encampment just days after Police Arrested 93 demonstrators. Last week, usc canceled its main Commencement Ceremony, citing safety concerns. Passengers headed from sacramento to denver finally reached their destination after quite a roundabout route. The United Airlines flight was diverted yesterday morning to sfo due to a possible mechanical issue. Flightaware tracked the planes movements from sacramento to sfo. The planes circled back several times before landing safely at sfo. The boeing jet was carrying 167 passengers. United said its pilots never had to declare an emergency before the flight was diverted. The passengers deplaned and were put on other flights to denver. It has now been a year since a string of stabbings near the Uc Davis Campus. Two men were killed. One woman was hurt during a five day period. David bro was the first victim to die in the attacks. This weekend, his sister maria paid a visit to the bench on a Street Corner near the davis campus in his memory. When we hear davids name, i would love for people to think of compassion. Thats why he sat here, because he, on this bench specifically, which is a monument to compassion in the city of davis, and he symbolized that the man whos been arrested for the attacks, 21 year old carlos dominguez, is due back in court in june. Thats when hes expected to learn his trial date, the court has ruled. The former uc davis student is mentally competent to stand trial, cleanup and Recovery Efforts are underway after intense tornadoes slammed parts of the midwest. This weekend, more than 30 women gathered at the Berkeley Fire Department Training Center for a firefighter camp, one of many efforts to draw more women to a profession thats long been dominated by men. Law enforcement agencies in the south bay are trying to reassure homeowners in one community after a string of recent home burglaries. Ktvu ali rasmus joins us live from los altos with the info they shared at a Community Meeting. Ali yes, that Community Meeting held at a church here in los altos, had some concerned residents heard from Law Enforcement officers here in the town of los altos, which contracts with the Santa Clara County sheriffs office. Now Santa Clara County sheriffs investigators told residents that they believe these home burglaries, many of them are the work of the same organized group. They said that overall, though, the trend of the past couple of years appears to show a decline in residential burglaries, not an increase. So theyre still nonetheless adding Police Patrols and using license plate readers to track down the people responsible. But according to a city report filed earlier this year, there were 25 home break ins reported from september 2023 to february this year. But thats a 30 drop from the same period the year before. Even so, residents feel a sense of unease after hearing about their neighbors homes getting broken into or experiencing that type of crime themselves. At first, she thought the cat had knocked something over. Then she heard mens voices and saw lights flashing in the hallway. She yelled. They ran this has become a very, very sophisticated and organized group of individuals committing these crimes. They definitely know when youre out of town or when they think you should be out of town. Santa clara county sheriffs investigators encouraged people at the meeting to make sure their second story doors and windows are locked. They also encourage people to consider things like adding motion detector lights and surveillance cameras. Now, since last year, the town of los altos has set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to supplement their sheriffs patrols with private security patrols. The incident unfolded friday afternoon at the ace hardware on grand avenue. Police say 42 year old willie gomer randomly struck a customer inside the store. Officers responded and while trying to subdue him, used a taser on gomer. They say gomer then ran to a nearby home and investigators say he attacked the police chief, jeremy bowers, who joined other officers outside the home. The chief suffered minor injuries but says the entire incident could have been avoided. Why this person was even out. Firefighters in San Francisco responded to three separate car fires in the tenderloin over the weekend. Video of the fires was posted on the citizen app. The first fire was reported around 5 15 a. M. Saturday on ellis street, followed by a second fire about four minutes later on eddie street. The third fire was reported 24 minutes later on jones street. Police say no one was inside the vehicles, no injuries reported and no arrests made. Anyone with information, though, is asked to call San Francisco police. There will be fewer crossing guards in marin county starting in the fall. Last year, the Transportation Authority of marin increased the number of School Crossing guard sites from 96 to 104. Now the agency says it doesnt have the money to continue with that many and is going back to the original 96. In many of these cases, there may be another guard a block down or nearby that, you know, families could then change their route a little bit and still, you know, feel like theyre traveling on a route that has a guard. So we definitely will be working with the safe routes side of the program on that, as well as potentially on kind of reemphasizing the Safety Education that they do for second graders and fourth graders at schools where there is a guard that is being, a guard location thats being eliminated. The Transportation Authority says it will have maps available so families can find the crossing guard closest to their route. Band members up at Elsie Allen High School have been using the same ones for 30 years. They have now worked to raise, helping to raise 25,000 to pay for new uniforms. Umms. But the current band teacher says they have outlived their use, so the band recently bought some new uniforms and now has to pay for them. Well, a protest on Stanford Universitys campus goes on. Despite School Administrators telling students what theyre doing is against student policy. And it could lead to consequences. All these dozens of tents you see behind me, theyve been here since about thursday afternoon. Students here tell me that they think the university has no plans to shut them down. In fact, they say theyre feeling more empowered each day since thursday because of the support they have received. Most notably, they tell me all comes from a spring student body election. A third of the entire student body population voted, and thats typically what you do for class president s, class officers, initiatives or grants. But one initiative on that ballot was to call for the university to divest funds into companies accused of contributing to israeli violence in gaza. They specifically name Lockheed Martin, chevron and hewlett packard. Of the students who voted, they report, about 70 agreed to pass that initiative. One student representative we spoke to earlier this morning, he represents those protesting, he says, because of that support, they dont plan to back down to stanfords threats. They threaten us with officer Community Standards violations, threaten us with academic discipline actions. But honestly, theyre not. It doesnt feel as if theyre trying to actually maybe it does feel like theyre trying to shut us down, but theyre scared to do anything because they know that were going to fight back because they know we have so much support from the local community, from students on campus, that if they did try anything, it would honestly end poorly for them. So we have reached out to Stanford University this morning. Still no word from them, but ktvu did reach out to the companys aimed at the by these protesters. A spokesperson from Lockheed Martin issuing a statement saying in part, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we continue to stand ready to support the Us Government and allies to deliver Strategic Deterrence and security solutions. We know the School Administration told these students theyre violating its protest policies because of those overnight overnight encampments. Those are not allowed. The school also asked these demonstrations, demonstrations to be clear, specifically those tents to be cleared by friday night or else they would face consequences in the form of Community Standards or student code of conduct violations. I know these students have had some encounters with some police officers, not at all in an intense way, like weve seen in places, other places throughout the country here, but more so officers just keeping an eye on what they are doing here. Police patrols are increasing on the ucla campus after a weekend of tense and sometimes violent protests. He was about to go. Going down, theres no doubt. Now there were several fights on the campus yesterday between propalestinian demonstrators and proisrael counterprotesters. The violence came during a campus demonstration that involved thousands of protesters, many of them ucla students. Meantime, at usc, police in riot gear went back to the campus over the weekend after propalestinian demonstrators came back with tents. They reestablished their encampment just days after police made 93 arrests last week , usc canceled its main Commencement Ceremony because of safety concerns. The campus of Cal Poly Humboldt is now closed for the rest of the semester due to propalestinian protests, administrators announced over the weekend all of its students will be working remotely during the final three weeks of the semester. Construction work continues in hawaii to remove the infamous haiku stairs, and the police recently caught dozens of hikers trying to climb those popular stairs one more time. In 2021, city officials voted to permanently take out the stairway because of the rise in tourism and vandalism. Federal safety regulators are investigating fords hands free Driver Assistance system after learning it was active during two recent deadly crashes. Three Law Enforcement agencies in the south bay are working to inform and reassure homeowners in one community. Following a recent string of home burglaries, Santa Clara County sheriffs investigators told residents of Los Altos Hills, an organized group of thieves is likely behind a string of break ins. Theyre adding patrols and using license plate readers to track them down. Officials say. Despite the heightened concern, there has actually been a downward trend in the number of residential burglaries, according to a city report, there were 25 home break ins reported from september to february this year, a 30 drop from the same time period the year before. Those numbers, though, did little to soothe residents. As always turned on the tv very loud and the lights on inside and outside the house. When we left, none of that mattered. This has become a very, very sophisticated, organized group of individuals committing these crimes. They definitely know when youre out of town or when they think you should be out of town. In Santa Clara County, sheriffs investigators encouraged people to secure their doors and windows on upper floors and to add motion detector lights and surveillance cameras. Since last year, the town of Los Altos Hills has set aside hundreds of thousands of dollars to supplement the sheriffs patrol with private security to patrol neighborhoods in the middle of the afternoon, a time Law Enforcement says home burglaries are most likely to happen because thieves assume or observe that most people are away at work. One man remains in custody this morning accused of attacking piedmonts police chief. The incident unfolded on friday afternoon at the ace Hardware Store on grand avenue. Police say 42 yearold willie gomer randomly struck a customer inside the store. Officers responded and while trying to subdue him, used a taser on gomer. They say gomer then ran to a nearby home and investigators say he attacked the police chief, jeremy bowers, who joined other officers outside the home. The chief suffered minor injuries. He says the entire incident could and should have been avoided. Why this person was even out. He was on parole for kidnaping, robbery and numerous other charges and so clearly he was not in a state where he should be out and about in the public, given his his his level of criminal violent activity. Police say the customer who was attacked inside the Hardware Store was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover. Our time is now 833. Over the weekend, our special program in the state of the town took a deep dive into oakland, its issues, its progress and its future. We spoke to doctor holly joshi, the chief of oaklands department of violence prevention, about the strategies to reduce the crime rate, the department of violence prevention. Our role is to create a safer oakland by preventing group and gun violence. And so youre absolutely right. We take a Public Health approach. The ceasefire model that weve reimplemented is a Perfect Match for the department of violence prevention. As you know, we implemented it very well from 2012 to 2019 and experienced significant reductions in shootings and homicides and crime, and that was largely attributable to the citys successful implementation of a focused deterrence model. So in terms of what is working well, this past four months, since ive taken the chief of department of violence prevention role, is that we have focused pretty much exclusively on the implementation of a focused deterrence approach, otherwise known as ceasefire and crime is trending down for people who are frustrated or dont feel safe in this community and may not see the work that you all are doing behind the scenes. What is your message to them . From the department of violence prevention and the city broadly, i can say that im extremely confident in the direction that were going when it comes to public safety. Crime is down by 30, and were not going to stop there. Were going to continue to drive Violent Crime down in the city and holding ourselves and one another accountable to not only the numbers, but also how residents are feeling. Thats a really important measurement as well, is, yes, the statistics. And we need to keep our eye on that and we need to be continuously hearing from our community, from our business owners, from our residents about how oakland is actually feeling. And so thats what well be focused on this year. And the years to come. The narrative will follow our results. And again, were trending in the right direction. Were were not going to stop. Our time is now. 836 a proposal to allow noncitizens to vote in board elections at the city college of San Francisco just cleared a major hurdle, supporters of the proposal say if it passed, it would give their foreign born students a stronger voice on campus. While critics say the proposal would not solve the schools problems, the colleges board of trustees unanimously approved that proposal. Now its in the hands of the citys board of supervisors for a final say on this matter. Well, doctors, hospitals and Health Insurance companies in california will be limited to annual price increases of just 3 beginning in 2029. Thats under a new rule that state regulators approved. Its the latest attempt to bring down the soaring costs of medical care. Recent studies have shown the money that californians spend on Health Care Every year has climbed more than 5 a year over the past 20 years. After four years of debate, the states highest court upheld a half cent Alameda County sales tax measure that funds child care and Pediatric Services for low income families. Measure c passed back in 2020 with 64 of the vote, was then challenged by the countys taxpayers association, which said it required a two thirds approval. California Supreme Court ruled that tax is a citizen led effort and only needed a simple majority. The 20 year half cent sales tax is expected to generate about 150 million a year. The tax is already being collected and has been sitting in escrow. One of the largest Childrens Service providers in the bay area is getting millions in federal funding.
