Demonstrators at the university of Southern California in los angeles began clashing with police this afternoon after they were told by officers to disperse some moments of chaos soon followed, causing University Officials to close its gates to the public indefinitely. And tonight, while many people have moved out of uscs alumni park, demonstrators remain on the outside perimeter. Reporter ed laskos brings us the latest as i get back. Chaos in the very center of the usc campus. So lapd moving in, ending the occupation of alumni park as Tactical Squad surround the park, sealing it off, turning it into a tense face off with hundreds of propalestinian protesters, kkk, a wild scene with bottles and liquid being tossed at the officers who gave the protesters a deadline to leave the park, or else hopefully they start dispersing and leaving the area, and then well go ahead and go to that next step. And if they do not leave, if they dont leave, then theyll be placed under private persons arrest by the department, and theyll be subject to arrest for trespassing. Tensions began to heat up hours earlier, with uscs department of Public Safety officers moving in to confiscate some tents and detain a protester. That led to a scuffle pushing, shoving, yelling with a standoff growing from there, forcing usc to even close its campus to anybody whos unauthorized. But hundreds of protesters already on campus locking arms, vowing not to leave, instead vowing to face arrest. Let them go, right, let them go because, like most of them are students. These people are not criminals. Theyre not criminals. One by one, the protesters led away, some 70 of them arrested and booked, all to make their demands for usc to end its ties with israeli connected investments. I love it, i love it, i think its very necessary. I hope it doesnt escalate the way it has at columbia university. I think its a peaceful protest and its necessary. Again, that was ed laskos reporting. Meantime, in northern california, Cal Poly Humboldt remains closed through the weekend. Propalestinian demonstrators continue to occupy one of the schools Main Administration buildings. The doors of siemens hall have been barricaded with tables, chairs and other objects. Three people have been arrested. The protests first started monday night. The students barricaded inside have several demands. Among them, theyre asking the university to divest from israel and no penalties or charges for any of the student protesters. University Officials Say they have asked the students to be open to dialog to reach a solution. And here in the bay area, protesters are also camping out in tents at uc berkeley. This protest also started monday with about a dozen tents. It has now grown to at least 70 large tents right outside the administrative building at cal. Demonstrators have the same requests of wanting the university to condemn the violence in gaza. The University Says it has no plans to change its Investment Policies or practices. Meantime, Campus Police have been scene monitoring the protest from afar. But have not engaged with any of the protesters. The demonstrators say they do not plan to leave any time soon, and you can stay up to date on the growing protests across the nation online. Just visit ktvu. Com anytime around the clock. The california garlic festival moving yet again, this time to los banos in merced county. Organizers say they wanted to be closer to where the garlic is grown and then make it easier for vendors from the now defunct gilroy garlic festival to take part. Ktvu is an rubin has the story. Whether youre craving garlic popcorn, garlic sausage or maple brown sugar garlic ice cream this summer, theres a new destination for all things garlic las banos. The fairgrounds there will play host to the california garlic festival, and we felt it was best to be centrally located between the top producing garlic county. The move comes after two years in stockton, but really the organizers are picking up the torch from the now defunct gilroy garlic festival. Following a mass shooting in 2019, gilroy canceled their event indefinitely and started offering a charitable golf tournament. Instead. We reached out to them for reaction, but didnt hear back when gilroy ceased their operations. We had a lot of people reach out to us saying, hey, you guys do festivals, your local farmers, is there something you can do . So the new organizers, who also run an asparagus festival, knew exactly what to do. There will be monster trucks, camel rides, live entertainment, scholarship, pageants, and of course garlic. And we just didnt want it to hurt our agriculture community. So we just picked it up and created our own with the respect to them and also the outreach to the community. Its not going to be as big as the gilroy garlic festival on its first year, but bringing that Economic Opportunity here to merced county, i think it could be something really great. Los banos, which holds a spring festival at their fairgrounds, already wanted a second event. This seemed like the perfect fit. Plus the site is close enough that farmers, vendors and volunteers from gilroy can easily participate. Its kind of a way to tie the two communities together, and i think its, you know, its pay homage to them. Be thankful for what they started. Unfortunately, its not there anymore. But hey, well pick up the mantle and run with it. The california garlic festival, in its new location, is set to run august 30th through september 1st. The two women received recognition for their actions during an incident on the graveyard shift. 903 at age 65, shortly after one in the morning on february 8th, the two officers were patrolling in their squad car in the south of market area when they noticed a man riding his bicycle on the sidewalk, which is illegal. Officer luck got out of the car to speak with him, and i asked him to get off of his bike, and then he kind of ditched his bike and hopped over here. Ran over luck, chased on foot. The two officers managed to take down the suspect, who is a convicted felon, but the officers didnt stop there. They retraced the mans steps and gathered evidence that he had tossed out a stolen gun that was loaded, and illegal narcotics, including meth, amphetamine, and fentanyl. You dont know whats going to happen, but but at the end of the day, youre ready for it. Police chief bill scott says the female officers are part of what he describes as a momentum, a turnaround in policing here and across the country.
