Is mornings on two. Good morning to you and welcome back to mornings on two. On this april 2nd im Claudine Wong and good morning im dave clark. Tuesday morning Steve Paulson one of your favorite people Claudine Wong is here personally to get us in the neighborhood. And i was in the and the weather was so nice for one more day that i decided to swing on by. Well, dave and i are fortunate to have you here, claudine. Thanks for bringing us to be here, trooper. There. All right. Some fog has returned. And just like that, it popped up after a beautiful, clear day yesterday. Now, most locations are clear inland, but theres a pretty good little fog bank kind of favoring the coast. So i think itll be cooler. Coast and bay today, still 70s inland, but a dramatic change. I dont say that to all of them, but its on its way. Starting a little bit tomorrow on big Time Thursday and friday. So for two for tuesday does have a return of that fog. But inland will still be nice. Mild to warm with temperatures anywhere from 60s to some mid 70s. All right ali is here. All of a sudden it got busy. So at 7 00 we are going where it got busy. And were going to go to the south bay where a couple of problems from earlier have now started to resolve. But as my friend and colleague Sal Castaneda always likes to say, the damage is done. Lets show you the maps. You can see what im talking about. So that earlier crash two of them actually on northbound 101 at shoreline, and then at 237, those have been cleared, but theres still a lingering backup in the area. So just be aware of that. Otherwise your south bay commute looks okay. Aside from the usual slow, sluggish traffic on 101 as you approach 880, lets take a look at Contra Costa County east Contra Costa County as well. We do have a crash that is still in the clearing stages, westbound 80 at San Pablo Dam road. And so youre going to have a slow drive on that east shore freeway from richmond all the way to the toll plaza. Theres also a crash in the eastbound direction at the carquinez bridge toll plaza. So eastbound direction non commute direction. Its not tying things up too badly. There heres a live look at highway 24 as you make your way to the caldecott tunnel. No big problems there and a picture now of that highway for a traffic camera. You can see it is busy, sluggish and it will be slow getting around that curve towards. 680 702 lets go back to the desk. All right. Thank you ali. Well, nurses in the south bay say they are being asked to do more than they can handle. Now Santa Clara County is bracing for its first ever nurses strike. Lets go to ktvu. James torres, whos live for us in san jose this morning to talk about their demands and how the county is reacting. Good morning to you, james. Claudine, good morning to you. Well, just about a few minutes ago, across the street from where were standing right now, you see a couple dozen Nurses Holding the signs yelling those chants officially on strike as about 5 00 this morning. This right now happening in front of Santa Clara Valley medical center, one of three hospitals involved in this three day strike happening here in Santa Clara County. The other two, one in san jose, also in gilroy, about 4000 total nurses off the job this morning. And talking to me a little bit about what we can expect over the next three days and the ideas behind this strike is maybelline cue. Youre the Vice President of the union here representing these nurses. Tell me, just for a quick moment, what is this all about . Its all about ensuring Patient Safety and nurse safety. Now, i think when we read some of these conditions and some of the conversations youve had with the county, of course there are a number of different demands that you ask for in negotiations for a contract. But the one thing that seems to be the real Sticking Point is staffing. And this ratio between nurses and patients. Can you tell me more about that . Sure. So the county has been chronically understaffing its units. About 75 or more of our units are constantly working understaffed, and we need to have the right amount of nurses to take care of the patients. The more patients a nurse has to take care of, each additional patient we have is an increase in 7 mortality of that patient. And thats why its important for us to keep our patients safe. Of course, there are always conversations about, pay inflation, you know, things like that. We heard from the county who put out a statement saying that they think Santa Clara County has one of the most competitive pay when it comes to nurses, and medical centers here. They think that vacancies are smaller than the national average, and turnover rate is smaller than the national average. Whats your response to that . My response is the countys numbers are inflated and inaccurate, and its unfortunate that theyve put out that out to the public because the numbers are not correct, they have a high turnover rate, but theyre using an amount of their coded positions. So the true number is not accurately, encompassed there because theyre using our temporary workers as core staffing. So thats where the biggest turnover is. And theyre not theyre not able to capture that. So the problem is they dont have the amount of nurses that they can recruit and retain because theyre not paying us competitively. What we do is we spend millions of dollars of taxpayer money to train the nurses because were a training facility. And then those nurses then leave to go to other hospitals who pay more. And so then the skill set leaves this Health System and we love this Health Care System, and wed like to stay here if we can. But the county gives us no choice, and we have to be able to move somewhere else to either afford where we live or go to a different job to just be able to continue to live in this area. Now i know when it came to some of those negotiations, there was a most recent third Party Mediator that offered, or suggested i should say a 13 wage increase until october 2025. You guys want 15 . Is that 2 enough of a difference to go on strike . Actually . Well, we objected to is not the money. We objected to the working conditions. They want to be able to send the nurses to the three different hospitals at a moments notice, without giving us the accurate training to be able to be in that hospital, because the county has failed to integrate the two hospitals into the system. Well, each of those hospitals have different policies and procedures which endangers the patient when our nurses have to go to other facilities because were not aware of the hospital policies at that location. We only know the policies at the location that we were hired into, and that we work regularly. And its about that safety that were objecting to. Maybe. I want to ask you one last quick question. Real briefly. Tell me what would have to happen today in order for this strike to no longer continue to tomorrow. They need to make sure that they protect us, have stronger language for safety. They need to make sure that they dont understaff us, that they have the protections for the nurses and the patients to keep all of us safe and to be able to take off that that requirement to float us to the different hospitals. No other Health Care System does that to their nurses, unless theyre specifically hired to float between different hospitals. And thats what they need to do. Maybe we can talk about this all day, but thats all time we have here. I know you probably want to join your nurses as well, so thank you for speaking with us and joining us early this morning. Its a strike that will last about three days. Theyll continue until friday morning. Were live this morning in san jose. Im james torres ktvu fox two news. All right james thank you. Cleanup and recovery continues after that devastating collapse of the key bridge, but work crews are hitting the road blocks trying to clear debris from the channel. Its dangerous for those crews to navigate the area with that deadly bridge collapse occurred. Now, tons of sharp, twisted metal from the Francis Scott key bridge are still on top of the cargo ship that slammed into the bridge, and the underwater damage is just as complicated, with the murky water making it hard for divers to see beyond 1 or 2ft below the water line along the bottom is very challenging because these girders are essentially tangled together, intertwined, making it very difficult to figure out where you need to eventually cut so that we can make that into more manageable sizes to lift them. Now, yesterday, crews tried to clear a temporary channel on one side of the bridge collapse to help with ship traffic. For those that are trying to sail in to help with the cleanup, the company, based in singapore that owns and manages the cargo ship, filed Court Documents aimed at limiting their legal liability for the deadly crash if they are found responsible. Our time is 716. A family very frustrated with the cruise line after their 80 year old mother suffered a stroke during a cruise, but the cruise line never alerted the family. Ktvu is andre senior in the studio now to tell us about a nightmare this family went through trying to bring their mother back home. Andre. Well, good morning to you. Today was quite the saga to hear julie langhoffs family describe it. She was on a Norwegian Cruise Line touring african countries when she suffered a stroke. Lankov was being treated at a local hospital in the Central AfricanIsland Country of sao tome. She was released 24 hours later, and by that time the cruise ship was gone. But lankov was helped by some other american passengers who missed boarding the ship when they returned late from an excursion, they got lankov, a hotel room and notified her family about what had happened. My reaction first was shock. I i cried, i couldnt believe, oh, my mom, my poor mom. Whats going on . I just want to be with my mom, her daughter made arrangements for her mother to fly to the bay area, where she was taken by ambulance to stanford medical center. Theres a lot of 80 year olds. Theres a lot of other people that are elderly that take these cruises. They need to be hugely and extremely aware that they have very little rights. When something goes wrong. The couple says the cruise line should do a better job of notifying the passengers. Emergency contact when there is a problem. We reached out to Norwegian Cruise Lines and the company says they tried to call lankov several times, but were unable to reach her, saying quote, in instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent. The couple says they are now focused on land costs, recovery and getting her back home to eugene, oregon. Claudine all right. Thank you. Andre. He flew 200 missions. He survived being shot down in new guinea. In 1943, luke hunter died at his home in grass valley. He was surrounded by his family. All right. Time now is 720. Time to check in on traffic. Its been a little bit of a bumpy morning in some places. Ali yeah. And you still see some of the lingering effects of some of the earlier problems. Although i think now were kind of on the decline from the worst of the morning commute, at least when it comes to the number of crashes that im seeing. You do see those backups, though, at highway four in east Contra Costa County, and also that 80 and 580 drive towards the bay bridge toll plaza that has been tied up all morning. You also see a report of a stalled vehicle as you approach the caldecott tunnel. So some slow traffic in orinda in that westbound direction as well. It is sluggish in the south bay and northbound 280 past downtown. No specific problems that we know of in that area, but there are some problems there. Were taking a look now at the Golden Gate Bridge and this is where we see some of that fog that Steve Paulson has been telling us about. Not too breezy this morning. I always look at the flagpost on the right of the screen, but it is a pretty sunrise with that fog. Definitely cooler though, steve, just as you expected for coast and bay. Yes, itll still be sunny and nice inland. I dont think itll be as warm as yesterday, ali, but it will still be pretty good. Well take a look at the temps from yesterday and probably long overdue to get a nice sunny wall to wall day with temperatures in the 70s. And thats what all these had in common here. Santa rosa led the way not only at the Sonoma County airport, also downtown, 77 napa, vallejo, concord, menlo park, san jose, livermore and kentfield all between 72 and 76 degrees. Santa rosa is the tough one today. Some low clouds and fog have made it. Fog made it to bennett valley. Thank you, garrett for that. And i think without that north breeze im splitting the difference. Ive seen forecast highs today for santa rosa of 65 to 70 for the fog. And without that, north breeze tells me itll probably be closer to the upper 60s or low 70s. Now. The city, oakland and santa cruz because of more of an onshore breeze. I dropped them 64, 66, 65, 64, 52 for San Francisco. Whats average for april 2nd . 6349. So pretty close record 88 on the high 1985, 43 in 1956 on the record low today. Fog returns, but still cool for some, warm for others. Mostly cloudy. Big drop on the temps wednesday and then a significant drop along with rain returning thursday into friday. Some fog Sonoma County airport, petaluma a little bit, maybe around novato. Its more of a low cloud deck than right down on the deck, but there are some pockets where its reducing visibility. Cant see it yet. Were a little bit there. It is. But i mean its mainly filling in about pacifica north Half Moon Bay north, it looks like. But the key is the onshore breeze. The city had an east wind yesterday. They have a west wind today. Oakland, Berkeley Hills and out to davis point is also west southwest versus east northeast. Thats a big difference. 40s 50s on the temps, mainly 40s. A little cool for some, no doubt. If you have clear skies, no fog. It can be in the low 40s here. The high is squashing the fog so the bases are low, but its setting the stage for a little cool down today, and a big drop in upper low is going to drop in with, i mean really cold air for early april. And along with some rain which will take us into at least sunday, maybe monday. But i think the temps youll notice though, especially thursday and friday, will be well below average here. Some fog returns, cool lows, but sunny for most. Cooler by the coast but still 70s inland. Tomorrow though, get ready, its on its way. A big drop and then even more so thursday. Friday. Okay, thank you steve. Well, San Franciscos oldest restaurant is celebrating a big birthday. The special deals customers can get all month long, and were advised to eat fruits and vegetables to have a wellbalanced diet. But a new study by stanford says you may want to go even further than that. Youre about to hear from a medical expert about the idea of doctors. And vegetables can have significant improvements on your health. Researchers at stanford examined more than 5000 middle aged patients who were suffering from Chronic Health conditions. In the study, doctors enrolled them in a program called recipe for health, where they were prescribed fruits and vegetables. Earlier this morning, we talked to fox medical teams doctor mike salerno about the promising results of that study. I dont know why it took a century to figure this out, but if you prescribe, if you have someone who is a Health Care Provider saying, look, heres a prescription for broccoli, it gives it more credence and people will do it. And the studies show that it reduces his blood pressure, reduces cholesterol and most importantly, reduces weight, and teaches people how to take care of their machines. Doctor mike says learning the importance of a healthy diet can prevent needing other medications down the road. Our time now. 728 a major milestone reached by a school for guide dogs in san rafael. While the family of alexis gabe hopes it will finally answer questions. They still have. Two years after her death and a proposed name change causing turbulence between Oakland International airport and sfo. To tell you why, leaders in San Francisco say that proposed change would be too confusing. From ktvu, fox two news. This is mornings on two. Well good morning. Thank you for joining us. Welcome to mornings on two. Im dave clark and im Claudine Wong. It is tuesday april 2nd. Lets talk about our weather. Lots to talk about Steve Paulson keeping an eye on things steve i was talking to someone yesterday and theyre like, wow, its so nice out. Im like, steve says its going to change. Dramatic going to change. So just enjoy it while it last. If youre away from the coast today, yes. Still one more nice day. But fog has come roaring back now. Its not everywhere, but just the mere fact that early april we have a little fog bank coming back that will drop the city temp. Today they almost hit 70 yesterday. I went 64 today, but inland will still be pretty good here. Lots of sunshine, all the little cool. I mean the lows dropped down to low 40s here. For many that system is going to claudines right. Give a dramatic change starting a little bit tomorrow and more so on thursday into friday. So your two for tuesday does have some fog returning, but a little cooler by the coast. Still nice to warm inland anywhere from 62 some maybe mid 70s. All right. Alis here. And shes telling you and me what it is getting busier out there. Not a lot of big crashes to tell you about or even minor incidents to tell you about. Just a lot of people on the road seemingly all at once. So youll see in some of the usual commute spots, things are kind of sluggish, like the san mateo bridge. I checked the cat, i check the maps, and theres no crashes on the other side of this bridge. Just a lot of people trying to get over to San Mateo County. Heres one of the traffic spots where you see traffic moving pretty freely here, north and southbound past the coliseum. 880 is actually a good commute at this hour. Bay bridge toll plaza, though very crowded. Youre looking at a 20 minute delay to get onto the span. 733 lets go back to the desk. Okay, ali, thank you. Well, it is a hot debate between two bay area airports, San Francisco and oakland. The Oakland International. Airport wants to add San Francisco bay to its name to try to attract more travelers. Ktvu is Amanda Quintana is here with some of the arguments for and against the change, and certainly this is heating up. Yeah, sfo definitely had something to say about this. As soon as they heard that announcement that it could be a possibility. Sfo says they do not want to see San Francisco added to the Oakland Airport name. Now, yesterday, leaders at sfo expressed concern, saying the new name could be misleading and will cause confusion for the public, either through a misunderstanding of its physical location or its perceived relationship to sfo. But nearly 20 organizations and city leaders support this change, saying it will help bring people to oakland and to the east bay. Our proposed name modification is both pro oakland and pro jobs. We want to boost jobs and Economic Activity for oakland. Okay is located on the San Francisco bay. I certainly get from a business standpoint, the desire to Grow Business or to attract more business, but the idea of creating a name that could be misleading to customers, i dont think thats the right approach. The port of oaklands commission is expected to vote on the name change next thursday, supporters say, adding San Francisco bay to the Oakland International airports name would help better identify geographically where the city of oakland is, and they want travelers to know that they can get to popular bay area locations from oakland. Now, okay would remain the airports code even if the name changes, but sfo officials are thinking about taking legal action to try to prevent this name change. Claudine. All right. Amanda. Yes . This conversation certainly will be continuing. Well, happening today, executives of the Oakland Athletics will meet with oakland city leaders. It is a meeting that could determine the immediate future of the as here in the bay area. The city is expected to offer a five year lease extension to the as at the oakland coliseum. The as current lease expires at the end of the season. The new 97 million deal would give the as a temporary home in oakland. That figure would be a huge rent increase, but would allow the as to remain at the coliseum while their new vegas stadium is being built. Oakland mayor shengtao released a statement that says, quote, i remain committed to doing everything in my power to keep the as in oakland. The terms we have proposed for a lease extension at the coliseum are clear, reasonable and achievable. Our time now. 736 the family of alexis gabe hopes a new documentary airing later this month, will answer questions about her death. Hundreds of volunteers spent weeks back in 2022 searching for that young woman from oakland. After more than a year of searching some of alexis gabes remains were found in amador county, but the Contra Costa CountyDistrict Attorney says the investigation remains open. The da previously said she would consider bringing charges against the mother of gabe suspected killer, if the remains of alexis gabe were found. We have come across evidence of aiding and abetting while reviewing the footage with antioch pd, and we are hoping that everything will be revealed in the documentary. Our attorney believes that the airing of the documentary could assist our case, and which is why it is crucial for the network to broadcast it now. The exboyfriend of gabe, whos a suspect in her death, was shot and killed by police in washington after allegedly going after police with a knife. That family has been told the episode, titled where is alexis . Gabe will be broadcast april 24th with part of highway one collapsed into the ocean in big sur. Both tourists and Business Owners say the impact is a big disappointment. It was all the way. Its gone. People wanting to visit the big sur coast are now being turned away because of that collapsed road near rocky creek. Its forcing a closure at highway one and Palo Colorado road. Business owners say. Beyond that, who are beyond that closure say they are expecting a long slowdown in visitors. Our plans were to visit like every single point in big sur and starting in monterey, santa cruz and, you know, head home. But apparently we have to now go back. There will be immediate Economic Impacts that with each passing day, will be greater and greater for our workforce and for our businesses. And there is no set timeline for when that road is going to be reopened to traffic. For now, caltrans is operating a convoy twice a day, once at 8 a. M, another at 4 p. M. But those convoys could be canceled because of the rain that is expected later this week. Its a major mess, and allie rasmus watching our commute this tuesday morning. Youve been dealing with messes all morning out there. Yeah, theres definitely some slow spots and some trouble spots that keep popping up here and there. Nothing major, no freeway shutdowns or anything that dramatic, but enough to slow you down if youre getting where you need to go or trying to get where you need to go, lets move this up. Map over just a little bit here so you can get a better view. They have cleared that crash on the east shore for, excuse me, 80 ish or freeways further down here. But this was San Pablo Dam road thats been cleared. But there is still a lot of slow traffic between that point San Pablo Dam road and all the way to the toll plaza toll plaza busy as well. And authorities in novato still dealing with this crash that happened that struck a pedestrian at the anderson on ramp on southbound 101. So well continue to keep an eye on that. Your drive from the carquinez bridge to macarthur maze still over 40 minutes because of some earlier crashes and the bay bridge toll plaza still pretty busy. And it is stop and go once you get onto the span. 740 heres Steve Paulson. Thank you ali. Appreciate that. Well look at yesterdays high temps for april 1st. Long overdue. They were nice. Still probably some 70s inland today but a little bit cooler pattern i think coast in bay santa rosa, napa, vallejo, concord, menlo park, san jose, livermore and kentfield all between 72 and 77 warm degrees. Santa rosa is the tricky one today. Fog made it there. I saw forecast highs today between 65 and 74. I split the difference. I went 68. The city oakland, santa cruz. They will drop more of an onshore breeze and no doubt about it. For the city fog is return. So 6452 on the forecast highs today. I didnt see low below 52 yet. Average 6349. So pretty close to records 88 on the high side 1985 43 in 1955 on the record low. So not even close to that fog returns but still cool for some. Warm for others, especially inland for most. Wednesday. Mostly cloudy, pretty good drop on the temps and then a significant change. Thursday into friday. Colder, windy and also rain returns thursday at quarter mile half mile visibility. Santa rosa, petaluma. But this is a coastal variety. Fog, not the radiation we usually see in the winter. So its just the High Pressure squashing the bases down. Its hard to see the visible satellite coming in here in about a half hour, but theres a pretty good fog bank out there for some. Not for all. But onshore breeze in the city, onshore out to davis point, onshore oakland, Berkeley Hills. Those are all offshore yesterday. So thats a big change in 24 hours 40s 50s on the temps here. The high will give inland areas another nice warm day. But boy this low dropping down for this time of year. Unseasonably cold weather is on the way. I would expect rain thursday parts of friday, but really cold. Windy is the message here with another system clipping a sunday into monday. For what its worth, on the ten day outlooks, the forecast models could not be more in disagreement. I would favor a more low pressure systems coming in versus High Pressure. Its been this way since december. Fog is back, nice inland to warm but cooler coast with that fog coming back. So 50, 60 and 70. Big change starts tomorrow. Okay steve. Thank you. Time 742. The possible fallout from the new 20 an hour minimum wage for california. Fast food workers, how restaurants are using technology to help cut their costs. Me too. Yeah, now im hungry. Thanks, pam. All right. Time now is 751. Time to check traffic with ali as were watching the roads, seeing how things are kind of shaping up as we approach this 8 00 hour. Ali. Yeah, i think the traffic conditions have kind of plateaued because some of the earlier problems that have now been cleared resulted in some lingering backups that still are there, especially in the south bay, which is where we will start first this time around. We mentioned those earlier crashes that were on 101 237, and thats still a slow drive in that northbound direction. We are also getting a report from the chp of a large pothole in the middle lane on northbound 280, right before 101. So slow traffic there as well. Lets take a look at the san mateo bridge, where it is at least moving again. At times it was sort of stop and go just a lot of people heading over to San Mateo County and the peninsula. Lafayette highway 24 also pretty busy. There is a report of a stalled vehicle in the second boer of the caldecott tunnel, so that may be having that trickle down effect of slowing everything behind it. Heres the bay bridge toll plaza, which has been slow for the last 40 minutes or so. Some earlier crashes on 80 kind of held the volume of traffic back for a while. And during that time in the 7 00, most of the 7 00 hour, the bay bridge toll plaza was pretty empty. But then once those crashes cleared, all those people stuck behind the crashes made it to the toll plaza, which is where they are now. So youre looking at a 20 minute delay to get onto the span. 753 heres Steve Paulson, sunshine for now, but thats going to change. Good today ali some fog has worked its way up, especially along parts of the san mateo coast. Biggest surge has been all the way up towards Sonoma County. And thats a big drop up there when you get the fog to come in. After yesterday, 77 degrees downtown santa rosa and Sonoma County airport, i think upper 60s today, you just cant warm up without that north or northeast breeze. This time of year you get a quick pop, but boy it can come down fast. Theres more of a northwest or a west southwest breeze in place for many, thats thats a big change from yesterday. So 40s 50s on the temps here, 28, truckee, 26, south lake tahoe. Two bits down here in flagstaff. And look at look at phoenix, 48, the same as sacramento. How about that, the high though is keeping a lid, if you will, on on the fog. So the bases are pretty low, but it made it a pretty good push considering this is two days now, just going back to march, where weve had a quick warm up, and then the following day the fog came back. Thats one of steves rule of thumbs is as we lead into maybe summer, i watch how things are and how the wind is, especially San Pablo Bay or the petaluma gap, to kind of judge on how the summer will be. And so far it favors cooling fast. So well see if that pans out as we head into the rest of april, may and june, the rain will return thursday. And this is a cold system, a really cold system, im not trying to get too technical on you, but the cold air coming in for thursday is like, wow. So that will probably trigger not only rain, but i would think thunderstorms. Thursday and friday. Fog is back for some, but itll still be nice to warm inland temperatures. 70s for some, but 50s and 60s. Were anywhere near that fog there. Claudine. Dave. All right. Thanks steve. Well, no more working from home full time. It is back to the office for tens of thousands of state workers. Why . A road collapse in Monterey County still having an impact on drivers traveling part of highway one from ktvu to fox two news. This is mornings on two. All right. Welcome to mornings on two at 8 00 as you look live across the oakland estuary right now, we still have some fog over our skies right now. But the sun is coming out at least here in the oakland area. Thank you so much for joining us. Im andre senior and im Claudine Wong. Today is tuesday april 2nd. And lets talk about this weather im looking forward to one more good day. Yesterday just went into my backyard and i just took in some sun and enjoyed it before it goes away. Steve, it you know, it was nice if you swim laps, you got out of the pool and it wasnt freezing, right . Thats true. Yeah. Its just a little hint of summer coming. Youre like, oh there it is. There it is. Okay today well still, if youre away from the coast, andre. Claudine itll be nice today. Well still get some 70s, but i think coast and bay come down a little bit. The fog seems to be retreating, but theres a pretty good little fog bank out there. Its hard to see it. There it is. Its made it all the way past santa rosa. They were 77 yesterday. I dont see how that happens today. So i cooled them off. Now, if youre inland, youll be good to go. But tomorrow, big changes are on the way. Well drop a good ten degrees tomorrow. So your two for tuesday has the return of that coastal fog. So a little cooler coast in bay, but inland temps, lots of sunshine. Still in the 70s. Do think a little breeze will kick up its heels later in the day. 60s 70s on the highs. All right. Allies here at 801 southeast. Where are we going i kind of all of the above steve because theres a couple issues in all of those regions of the bay area. Were going to start with the south bay. A new report of a crash on the drive to santa cruz. This is southbound, 17 at idlewild. Theres a crash there, and its an injury crash. So there, anytime you have a crash on this stretch of highway, it does lead to some backups. And it could take a little while for the emergency crews to clear that and help the people there. So also a crash as you approach the san mateo bridge toll plaza, thats going to make things slow to the san mateo bridge has been sluggish all morning long, and a report of a crash or actually rather stalled vehicle at the Richmond San Rafael bridge toll plaza. And this is what that looks like. You can see its taking a while for folks to get over to marin county. Bay bridge toll plaza is not much better. Its a lot more crowded, actually. Youre looking at a 20 minute delay or longer to get onto the span 803. Lets go back to the desk. All right. Happening now. Nurses in Santa Clara County officially on strike. They say hospitals in the county are asking them to do too much and not offering enough. Ktvu james torres is live in san jose with how this might be affecting patients. James good morning. Andre good morning. We are standing just across the street from the Santa Clara Valley medical center, where you see dozens of nurses who actually just got off their shift. Probably within the hour, have now joined the lines here. And they wont be going back to work for at least three days here. This is one of three hospitals affected by this strike. About 4000 nurses will be off the job for that time period. And that means if you have appointments or nonemergency surgeries at those three locations, thats here at Santa Clara Valley medical center, oconnor hospital, as well as saint louise Regional Medical center. Those appointments may be affected. A county Officials Say theyve brought in temporary nurses to help ease that work gap. Acosta, they say, is about worth 20 million. They say Emergency Services will not be affected, but they may contact you if your appointments are affected. Heres whats happening. The registered Nurses Professional Association says theyve been without a contract for about five months. In that time, theyve not seen enough investments to help recruit and retain nurses. They say theres also been an increase in Workplace Violence and Staffing Levels have become a problem. These nurses say to the point where the ratio of patients to nurses is becoming dangerous, and theyre also fed up with the Health System, asking those nurses to float between hospital to hospital. Each of those hospitals have different policies and procedures which endangers the patient. When our nurses have to go to other facilities because were not aware of the hospital policies at that location, we only know the policies at the location that we were hired into and that we work regularly. County representatives have responded. They say in a statement that they have been trying to bargain in good faith. Also, quote, the county hopes that rmpa will return to the table so that we can continue working toward reaching an agreement on a fair, competitive and sustainable contract. We are taking all necessary steps to safeguard patients, employees and visitors from the impacts of any possible strike activity. In addition, county leaders say nurses have seen a 13 wage increase in just the last fiscal year that vacancies and turnover rates in the area are also lower, they say, than the national average. Demonstrate is, of course, not just happening here, but at the other two hospitals in the area, though, those number nurses say that the numbers that the county have been provided are a little bit skewed, because it also includes temporary workers that the county uses to fill in some of the gaps that nurses leave behind, who usually dont work here regularly. The strike, of course, started about 5 00 this morning. Its expected to last until friday morning. Were live this morning in san jose. Im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. Okay. Thank you james. Well, police say there are people in the hospital this morning, three people who were shot in the safeway parking lot in American Canyon. That all happened late yesterday afternoon. It was outside the Grocery Stores gas station on west American Canyon road. Dozens of Police Evidence markers at the scene show where those shots were fired. And there are bullet holes and shattered windows in a car behind the crime tape. Police have questioned at least two possible suspects during the investigation following the shooting, officers located two male subjects that are being detained for questioning. Right now at this time, theres no current threat to the community. We are still trying to find out the condition of the three men who were wounded. The closure includes andrew molera, Julia Pfeiffer, burns lime kiln and pfeiffer big sur state parks as well as point sur state historic park, camping reservations have been canceled. Anyone with a reservation is going to get a refund. Emergency crews in Monterey County did usher a convoy of drivers to safety yesterday. That crumbling section of road is about a half mile from bixby bridge, and it has created a logistical nightmare for caltrans and the people who live and work there. As many as 2000 people were stranded over the weekend. Now only residents and essential workers are allowed through. At the present time, were really discouraging any visitors from coming down here until until its deemed safe. Caltrans has a plan for a temporary fix, which involves expanding the shoulder and placing 500ft of concrete barriers along the center line of that roadway. But theres no word on how long a more permanent fix might take or how long this inconvenience to drivers might actually last. Time is 810. Lets check your traffic. East bay commutes still recovering from some earlier problems. You can see it on the maps here 80 still a tied up and still a bit of a mess from el sobrante all the way down to the toll plaza and taking a look at east Contra Costa County. Its a slow drive on 242 southbound in concord and 680. However, things are improving on highway four. And thats this live picture right here where you can see a fewer cars in that westbound direction headed towards other parts of the east bay. Highway 24 in lafayette has been very slow and sluggish and earlier stalled vehicle in bore. Two of the caldecott has been cleared, but theres still a bit of a backup because of it. 811 lets go back to the desk, ali. Thank you. The port of oakland will discuss changing the name of the Oakland Airport, but opponents say the proposed change is a recipe for confusion, and its even got sfo officials pushing back. An 83 years after the attack on pearl harbor, the final remaining survivor of the attack on the uss arizona has died. We remember the life of this 102 year old veteran from northe liforn work crews are hitting roadblocks while clearing debris from the channel. Its dangerous for those crews to navigate the area where the collapse bridge fell into the water. Tons of sharp, twisted metal from the key bridge still on top of that cargo ship that slammed into the bridge last week and damaged under the water surface. Just as complicated, too, with the murky water making it hard for divers to see beyond 1 or 2ft below the water line along the bottom is very challenging because these girders are essentially tangled together, intertwined, making it very difficult to figure out where you need to eventually cut. So that we can make that into more manageable sizes to lift them. Well, yesterday crews tried to clear a temporary channel on one side of the bridge, collapsed to help with ship traffic. For those coming to help with the cleanup, the company, based in singapore that owns and manages the cargo ship, has filed Court Documents aimed at limiting their liability, their legal liability, in fact, for the deadly crash if they are found responsible. A family is frustrated with the cruise line after their 80 year old mother suffered a stroke during a cruise, but the cruise line never alerted the family. They say. They contacted her so she could fly her mother to the bay area, where she was taken to stanford medical center. Its really hard to experience that, that she was helpless, that she was alone. And yet she made it. Her daughter says the cruise line should do a better job, or should have done a better job of notifying passengers. Emergency contact when there is a problem. Lou cotner was just 19 years old while at his post on the battleship, when the Japanese Military attacked pearl harbor. More than 80 years ago. Nearly 1200 sailors and marines died on the uss arizona on december 7th, 1941. Thats nearly half of the dead from that battle. Last year, the veterans still had vivid memories of the day as the arizona sank. He and other survivors worked to help the wounded and recover the dead. When it was happening, five seconds, we didnt have time to look up and see what was coming. They were all right down at the waters edge, coming in, took a 15 1,600 pound bomb. Alongside of them are two turrets. And they were bad. Real bad. One spotted and picked up by the their bodies and the skin had come off your head. Cutter later went to Flight School and flew 200 missions. He survived being shot down in new guinea back in 1943. He died at his home in grass valley, surrounded by his family. All right. Time now is 819. Excuse me. Lets talk about traffic with ali. You said it plateaued in terms of where it looks like. It seemed like things just kind of recovered a little bit and then just stayed that way for a while. Like these crashes that weve been following since early this morning havent really cleared. Theres a couple of new problems that were seeing on the peninsula. So in San Francisco, one of them will affect you or could affect you if youre heading to sfo, theres a stalled vehicle near the domestic terminal off ramp, northbound 101. Also a crash on 280 just north of hickey boulevard in the in south San Francisco. Taking a look at your drive on the east shore freeway. This hasnt changed. This is what i mean by plateaued. It has been in the 40 minute range for the last 90 minutes or so. So earlier crashes caused this. Well, now you see it ticked down just a minute earlier. Crash just caused some of the backup. And even though those crashes have long since been cleared, its taking a while for the commute there to recover. 880 in oakland in the northbound direction. This is the first time were seeing it a little bit sluggish past the coliseum. Once you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, it is a late and long commute there. Youre looking at a 20 minute delay to get onto the span. Quick check of the san mateo bridge and traffic here is moving much more smoothly than it was just about 20 minutes ago. 821 here is steve. Thank you ali. Well see a lot of sunshine today. Although the much return of the fog came roaring back. Although it looks like its starting to retreat a little bit after yesterday when it was severe clear we had 70s for all of these. Santa rosa and napa, vallejo, concord, menlo park, san jose, livermore and kentfield all between 72 and 77 warm degrees anywhere San Francisco, oakland, santa cruz. I dropped the temps today. Thats because we have a little bit of fog and more of an onshore breeze versus the offshore. The tough one is santa rosa and they have fog this morning, so i drive. I saw 65 to 74 on the forecast highs. So im splitting the difference here. Its tough to warm up without that north wind helping. As we saw yesterday the city 64 52w average 63 4988. The record high in the state 1985 43. The record low 1955. So fog returns, but it will still be sunny for most here. And nice tomorrow, though, we start to see a big ramp up of the fog. Temps drop a lot and then colder to windy with rain returning thursday and i think some thunderstorms on look likely on friday here. Still a little bit of fog. Novato is in there now. Petaluma, santa rosa after that. It looks pretty good. So its a low cloud deck. Its a coastal variety, but with the High Pressure aloft its kind of squashing it. Thats why the bases are down so low. But that mere impact that its there will play into some cooler temps coast and bay today. More of an onshore breeze or west southwest versus yesterday when it was all north northeast 40s 50s on the temps here, weve bottomed out already. 20s and 30s in the mountains, 40s, 50s up and down the coast. The high will start to get knocked out by that system coming down tomorrow well drop temps big time with a i think drizzle probably likely. Thursday looks like a rain day and again probably friday afternoon. And one more system clips us on sunday into monday after that forecast models waver significantly, but i would tend to favor more low pressure systems. Thats just the way its been going back to december. But today, if youre inland, looks good. 70s on the temps coast and bay, little cooler, 50s and 60s with the fog there. And then tomorrow well start to cool down in a significant change. Thursday friday. Well, San Franciscos oldest restaurant is celebrating a big birthday. I was just about to say friday. That would have been wishful thinking. Ive been really bad. Right . Steve paulson, your week hasnt been that bad, has it . Its only tuesday. Monday to friday. Its only tuesday. Oh wait a minute. All right. Friday sounds good though, andre, i know i like the way youre thinking, though. All right, we do have now some areas east and south are clear, but north, theres a pretty good little fog bank kind of dancing around, especially along the marin coast. Well, about stinson beach, north sonoma coast, where its solid 40s, 50s on the 10th. Take a look at that. I mean, its kind of hit and miss san mateo coast, i can go down there, but theres not a lot there. But take a look. North petaluma, santa rosa, youre in the soup and its expanding. So i dont see how santa rosa gets that warm. Today i went 68 on a high after 77 yesterday. That system coming out of the gulf of alaska is a cold one. Itll be here starting tomorrow. A little bit and a big bit, if you will, on thursday and friday. So still inland. Nice warm, but i think a little cooler. Coast and bay and cooler north bay as well. Too much low clouds and fog. So 60s and 70s. All right. Ali is here. Were going all over the place this time with, this time im trying to get the maps to cooperate so i can get this new information about about a fire and a crash that happened in the fremont area. Union city area. Lets go to the maps. This is on eastbound 84 just west of newark. And if i can zoom in a little bit here, you can see what im talking about. This i mentioned this because it is blocking some of the lanes as the Fire Department responds to all of this. This is blocking 2 to 3 lanes of 84. So if youre planning to head from the east bay on southbound 880 to the dumbarton bridge, i would advise taking the san mateo bridge instead just so you can avoid this fire right here, blocking a couple lanes. Heres a live picture of 280 in san jose. This time its in the southbound direction that we see a bit of a backup. It looks like there is something tying up the far right lane. I dont see any notes in the chp log about a specific crash in this area, but we did note that on the other side of 280, east of this point, there was a report of a large pothole that people were avoiding. So maybe theres something wrong with the roadway there. Well continue to follow up on that. Highway 24 in lafayette. Its moving again. Its been slow all morning because of a stalled vehicle in the caldecott tunnel. 833 lets go back to the desk, ellie. Thank you. The skies arent so friendly between Oakland International airport and sfo. Thats right. Oakland international is hoping to improve its image and attract more travelers. It wants to add the words San Francisco bay to its name, and thats causing quite a conversation. Ktvu is Amanda Quintana joins us in studio with reaction from other airports because certainly, i mean, even in conversations within the newsroom, theres been a lot of kind of debate on whether this should or should not right happen, whether it will confuse people. And sfo has an opinion on that. Oh, im sure they do. Yeah. They do not want to see San Francisco added to the Oakland Airports name. Now yesterday, leaders at sfo expressed concerns, saying that this new name could be misleading and it could cause confusion for the public, either through a misunderstanding of its physical location or its perceived relationship to sfo. Now okay would remain the airports code even if that name does change. Meanwhile, though, sfo officials are thinking about maybe taking legal action to try to prevent this name change. Claudine back to you. The conversation continues. All right. Thank you amanda. Well, happening today, executives of the Oakland Athletics are going to meet with oakland city leaders. It is a meeting that could determine the immediate future of the as here in the bay area. The city is expected to offer the team a five year lease extension at the oakland coliseum. Now, the as current lease expires at the end of the season, and this new 97 million deal would give the as a temporary home in oakland. Now, keep in mind that figure would be a huge rent increase on what theyre paying now, but it would allow the as to stay at the coliseum while that new vegas stadium is being built. And oakland mayor shengtao released a statement saying, quote, i remain committed to doing everything in my power to keep the as in oakland. The terms we have proposed for a lease extension at the coliseum are clear, reasonable and achievable. Well, the tropicana casino resort in las vegas has now closed for good. The gaming floor closed just a few hours ago at three in the morning. Hotel guests are being required to leave by noon now. The tropicana opened in 1957, and for years it was known for its feathered showgirls and nearly 200 of them gathered at that iconic hotel to say their goodbyes. Weve all moved to different states and were all coming back here, so to all get together and see the faces we used to perform with, its fantastic. Demolition isnt expected to begin for a few months. Ballys intends to build a new resort adjacent to the as new ballpark that is planned for that site. All right, 837 is your time. An alleged sex worker was arrested in San Francisco for a violent attack on a homeless woman in the mission district. A homeowner on shotwell street caught the incident on video saturday evening. The attack has sparked outrage in that community. Neighbors say they have made countless complaints to the city regarding prostitution. What happened is not an accident. The family of alexis gabe is hoping a new documentary airing later this month will help answer questions surrounding her death. Hundreds of volunteers spent weeks back in 2022 searching for the young woman from oakley. After more than a year of searching, some of gabes remains were found in amador county, but the contra costa District Attorney says the investigation into her death remains open. The da previously said she would consider bringing charges against the mother of gabes suspected killer if gabes remains were found. We have come across evidence of aiding and abetting while reviewing the, the footage with antioch pd, and we are hoping that everything will be revealed in the documentary, our attorney believes that the airing of the documentary could assist our case, and which is why it is crucial for the network to broadcast it. Gabes exboyfriend, who is a suspect in her death, was shot and killed by police in washington after allegedly going at them with a knife, the family has been told. The episode, titled where is alexis . Gabe, will air april 24th. Well, it was part of highway one collapsed into the ocean in big sur. Both tourists and business Business Owners say the impact its all making is a big disappointment. This one was all the way. Its gone. People wanting to visit the big sur coast are now being turned away because of the collapsed road near rocky creek for forcing that closure at highway one and Palo Colorado road. Business owners beyond the closure say they are expecting a long slowdown in visitors. Our plans were to visit like every single point in big sur and starting in monterey, santa cruz and, you know, head home. But apparently we have to now go back. There will be immediate Economic Impacts that with each passing day, will be greater and greater for our workforce and for our businesses. Theres no set timeline for when that road is going to be reopened for traffic. For now, caltrans is operating a convoy twice a day, one at 8 a. M, the other at 4 p. M. Those convoys, however, could be canceled because of the rain that is expected later this week. The Carmel Unified School district is working on a plan for students who live in big sur and go to school in carmel. Travel along a stretch of roadway is limited after part of highway one in big sur washed out over the weekend. Students at Carmel High School say many of their classmates from the big sur area have been unable to attend class just now. Another whole, you know, its happened before every year. Theyre never prepared, but they accept it, you know . Classes for the Carmel Unified School district are still in session this week. Spring break does not start until next friday. Our Steve Paulson at 841 is back with us now. Hes tracking the weather. Pretty Beautiful Day across the area yesterday. So were going to have a repeat Performance Today for some. Yes. Not for all because the fog has come back. Yesterday we were clear coast bay and inland. Now if youre down towards santa cruz, Santa Clara Valley, south bay, most of the peninsula, east bay, theres like youre like wet fog. But start moving north, especially about Half Moon Bay north. And then a little bit over San Pablo Bay. But on the in the city, san mateo, then the marin coast, and then it gets thickest about stinson beach. And look at that. And then all the way up to healdsburg. Thats a heck of a push here. I dont see how santa rosa, which was 77 yesterday, i dont see how they get out of the upper 60s today. So i went 68 on the high just based on that much fog. So it favors areas to the north. Even santa cruz, which was 70 yesterday. I think there will be fog free, but theres a little bit more of an onshore push. So i dropped the city and of course oakland. Itll still be nice. Oakland, santa cruz, just without that east northeast breeze, its tough to get any warmer weather. Almanac today for the city 64 52w average 6349. So pretty close there. 88 the record 1985 and 43 in 1955. The record low fog returns. It will still be warm for many, especially away from the coast, but north bay temps i think, come down that low cloud deck in place. Big drop starts tomorrow and then a significant change on thursday and friday. Rain returns plus colder and windy. Santa rosa, petaluma, novato dealing with some of that low cloud deck a little bit around Half Moon Bay north. Other than that, theres no worries. But the system, theres a lot of low clouds and fog with that system on its way tomorrow, i think well see a big fog bank tomorrow morning, but inland, enjoy the sunshine because change is on the way. 20s and 30s in the mountains, 40s, 50s up and down the coast. The high is kind of squashing the fog. Thats why the bases are low. But that wont be the case tomorrow. A rather deep system. Cold as well. Deep means strong for early april, will be sweeping in rain returns thursday. Looks like friday afternoon as well. Cold and windy friday and again on sunday. Another system sweeps in. I think were a long way from being done with rain, although, you know, they start to be more spaced out once you get to in timing. As you get to april and may, fog is back. Itll still be nice to warm inland, but cooler for areas to the north, which is why i went 68 in santa rosa, but some mid 70s inland. Not tomorrow theyll drop ten degrees and even more so upper 50s on the highs. Thursday and friday. Okay sounds good steve. Pam cook has more on that and details about a disappointing day on wall street in todays dollars and cents. Yes, it is. Tesla sales and stocks down. The markets are down for the most part this morning. On the sentiment that the fed will not lower Interest Rates any time soon. That has led bond yields to rise. And that moves money from stocks to bonds. Now that sent the dow down more than 300 points right when the opening bell rang this morning. It has continued lower since. And the s p 500 also down a full percentage point. The nasdaq slipping more than 200 points at this hour down 1. 25. Taking you live to the big board. Theres the dow now down almost 500 points 1. 25 there. She has a final check of the roads this morning. Ali and a lot of spots. Things have not improved. Its just a late commute and a late some late traffic issues for folks. Remember this picture last time we showed you and we said what is going on in the southbound lanes of 280 in san jose . Well, now we know the chp and caltrans has closed one of the middle lanes of southbound 280, where nearby where it connects it, highway 87, as well as the bird off ramp. We dont know exactly why, but we also know that theres some crashes in the northbound directions. Also in this area, 280 northbound at wolf road. So if you can avoid 280 in the south bay in san jose, specifically, that would be a good option. Theres some closer up look at that closure there that were talking about southbound 280 where it connects with highway 87. The middle lane closed by caltrans. Lets take a look at some other problems that have just popped up. A crash on the richmondsan rafael bridge in the, direction of marin county. Theres also a crash at the macarthur maze, westbound 80 and 580, and that is blocking some lanes as well. So usually by this time of the morning, things start to clear up. That is not the case. The bay bridge toll plaza, as you can see. Still pretty busy. Were going to show you the Golden Gate Bridge now to end our last traffic round up of the morning just so you can see what Steve Paulson has been talking about with that thick fog bank that has moved in. Lets turn things over to steve. All right ali thank you. Yeah, especially north, east and south. Not so much in the city. Yes. Marin coast. Yes. And the north of that. No doubt about it. I mean, from petaluma, santa rosa to healdsburg and there are some breaks in it over marin county, a little bit over San Pablo Bay, but i mean it, santa rosa. Thats why i cooled it off today. The forecast highs today were between 65 and 74. I dont see how. And the wide, wide world of weather forecasting. Youre getting to 74. And theres that much fog at almost 9 00 in the morning, if youre inland, today will be nice. Well get some 70s changes on the way that High Pressure is going to get knocked out of here by a unseasonably deep, strong, cold low which will move in. Well see a big fog bank tomorrow. Temps will drop a good ten degrees, and then rain returns thursday. Cold and windy friday with probably thunderstorms. I mean, i dont see any way around that. And then another system coming in. It looks like late saturday, more likely early on sunday for another round of some mountain snow as well, and a cold, cold pattern for us. But today fog is back. Not for all. It will still be nice to warm inland. Well go from 5060s to a few mid 70s. If youre far enough away from any of that fog, influence and many of you are, but if youre not, youll be cooler today. Much cooler on wednesday, and then a big drop thursday.
