Lets do it. This this is the day weve been bracing for. Steves going to bring it to you. Yeah. Hes talking about your forecast. Whats coming . I am indeed. I hope you got out yesterday. Enjoyed that. Nice weather because it is long gone. It is not sunny in palo alto. I have to fix everything but 40s. 50s on the temps here. A lot of low clouds. Drizzle is already begun. Our system has moved in or even light rain. Well to the north. But this is more coming in this afternoon. This evening, and its the start of a Long Duration event and just incredible amounts of snow. It will rain morning, overcast, drizzle or light rain for some, especially the north. Cloudy, cooler rain develops in the wind will pick up as well. Get used to cooler temps. Much cooler as we go into the weekend. All right, sal is here. Good. Bad. Whats going on . Well, you know, right now we have a mostly dry commute, steve, and thats what i like. Dry commutes, but its not going to stay that way for long. At the bay bridge, its not wet yet, but it might. Obviously, you heard the mans talk about the weather coming. You will be driving home in rain if you have a regular eight hour workday. This is the Richmond Bridge. You can see theres already a little bit of rain moving through, and theres already some slowdowns. Were going to dive into that south bay commute when we come back in just a few minutes. But now its 701. Lets go right back to the headlines. Okay, sal, thank you. Ridership on muni is rising. And thats a very encouraging sign. After they really suffered after the pandemic, ktvu Bailey Ocarroll is at the Salesforce Transit Center in San Francisco. I see you standing in the rain. Tell us about the details and the numbers. Good morning bailey , good morning dave. Yeah, it has started coming down. Not not super hard here but hard enough for an umbrella, at least for me. Just to stay dry this morning. But yeah, muni ridership is up 25. Bringing it up to about 70 of where it was at prepandemic. Now we have moved spots here. We are now live on van ness and union, and i want to pan over here and show you a little bit of this red line behind me. And that is part of the reason why sfmta workers say the muni ridership is up. They focused on three key things which garcia mentioned three big reasons and again, that red line, a big reason why weve made muni faster and more frequent by investing in transit priority over the last four years, we have built more than 25 miles of new transit only lanes and other transit priority treatments. Now, the transit Transit Agency says weekday commuters were really the backbone of their ridership before that, work from home wave hit prepandemic, so they had to pivot. And again, they focused on three things cleanliness, safety and reliability, they added staff and cameras at stops and in busses and on light rails to deter a crime. They are also ensuring stations and stops and vehicles are all clean, not just for when people get on them, but also as they are waiting for those busses and those light rails. Now on top of that, delays are down more than 75. So you put all of that together. It really makes for a perfect storm when it comes to muni ridership. Now on top of all of this ridership is also riders say that they are increasingly happier with their muni service. More than 10 or excuse me, just shy of 10. About 9 say they are increasingly happier with the muni service that they are receiving. So those changes that muni is making obviously well received by the riders on the other end, reporting live in San Francisco. Im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu, fox two news. Bailey, thank you. Well move now to new video from oakland of some of the latest car breakins. There this one happened near fourth in madison, not far from jack london square. The break ins of at least five cars happened in the middle of the night, and one victim calls the situation frustrating and said something needs to be done about car. Breakins. Police say there were more than 13,000 in oakland last year. A 45 increase year over year. San jose police now have a man in custody in connection with a triple shooting that happened in 2018, 26 year old Miguel Vergara perez was arrested at his home in rohnert park. Hes accused of shooting three men during an argument in 2018 at a san Jose Taqueria on almaden expressway. All three victims survived the shooting, was captured on surveillance video. The video shows just how gruesome this act was committing this Violent Crime in a public area where multiple bystanders are located, including small children. And so you really see that in the surveillance video. Vergara perez is now booked at the Santa Clara County main jail, charged with attempted homicide. Our time is now 705 San Francisco city leaders say they want to eliminate any red tape to make it easier for prospective buyers of the Macys Union Square property. To do that, the Flagship Store is among 150 macys stores that will be closed within the next few years, as macys refocuses on smaller spaces and luxury brands, the city may convert the 400,000 square foot location into several uses, including housing, office space and a nonprofit location. One thing i would think about is subdividing the space and inviting some of those activities and users that have fled the city in, in, you know, the last decades, like nonprofit organizations, ngos, artists, arts organizations and trying to track them into that space. Now, macys says it doesnt plan to close the union square store this year. It may stay open for another year or two until the property is sold. People here in the bay area being told not to drive to the sierra. This weekend because of an incoming storm. There are some eager people, some avid skiers and snowboarders. Theyre heading up today trying to beat the worst of the storm Sports Basement and berkeley was packed last night. Shoppers making last minute purchases before they head up to tahoe. They know the risks of being on the road, but they didnt want to pass up a chance to hit the slopes for possibly record snowfall. Well see how much of it stays open. Um, worst comes to worst, well just ski the Lower Mountain. I got sleeping bags and hand warmers, lanterns, flashlights, a bunch of nonperishable food, a bunch of water, anything that i can survive on for at least 24 to 36 hours. Now, the ski resorts are preparing for slippery roads, reduced visibility and roads closed on mountain passes. But some resorts le palisades tahoe, plan to stay open until at least memorial day because of the expected snow thats going to hit happening today. The third snow survey of the season, conducted by the California Water resource department. Theyre going to do it in in the sierra at phillips station, off highway 50. The last survey back on january 30th showed that snow was 29in deep, with a snow water content of up to ten inches. Thats an increase from the first survey of the season, which showed three inches of water content. The Sierra Snowpack is very important. It makes up about a third of californias water supplies. Now, people who live in the sierra are stopping stocking up on supplies for this weekend. Grocery stores, Hardware Stores were packed with customers buying food, warm clothing, winter boots, snow shovels, batteries and more. In truckee, workers at Mountain Hardware and sports are helping the locals and visitors get ready for the storm. Its the gamut. So were, uh, shoveling these tire chains. Uh ice melt generators, lanterns, flashlights, batteries, um, anything that you can think of that somebody would need for a power outage or a severe storm. And there are coming in for it. And longtime residents are telling visitors, stay away that this weekend is not the right time for a casual visit because the roads are going to be messy, even if the area gets half the amount of snow thats been forecast. Pg and e is preparing for the storm. Expects the wind, rain, and snow to cause Power Outages. Pga crews are in place in areas where theyve had trouble getting to in the past because of debris and snow. The pga also has helicopters and snowcats at the ready. As you can see, its backed up at the macarthur maze here. Getting to the bay bridge toll plaza, highway 17. They cleared the crash we had near the summit. Theres some slower than usual traffic. The rest of the south bay commute looks okay. Been looking around at the east bay commute. We do have some slowing. Pleasanton, where my pleasanton folks at. I use the preposition at the end on purpose there. Southbound 680. We have some slowing getting down past sunol exit because of a crash. Give yourself extra time. 709 lets get back to the desk. Okay, sal. Thank you. A closer look now at uc berkeleys expense report, including spending almost 8 million. Well show you the cost breakdown for securing and seizing peoples park. Then the four finalists for the job of Oakland Police chief will be at an open meeting tonight. Where members of the public can hear from them directly. Why the person heading up this critical decision on who toledo pd will not be there democrats agree. Conservative republican steve garvey is the wrong choice for the senate. Our republican opponent here on this stage has voted for donald trump twice. Mr. Garvey, you voted for him twice. As your own man, what is your decision . Garvey is wrong for california. But garveys surging in the polls. Fox news says garvey would be a boost to republican control of the senate. Stop garvey. Adam schiff for senate. Im adam schiff, and i approve this message. He had responded to a report of a robbery at a Fast Food Restaurant on mount diablo boulevard. Not long after, officers found the suspect vehicle on highway 24 and say it sped off on camino pablo toward el sobrante. The Contra Costa CountySheriffs Department says the car crashed into another car going in the opposite direction. There was a seven year old child in the suspect car. Its not clear if anyone was hurt in this crash. Our time now. 713 a new report is out about Police Pursuits by San Francisco police and says those chases are more likely to end in a crash than any other major city in california. The San Francisco standard analyzed information from the california Highway Patrol and found 41 of the 115 chases by the sfpd d. Between 2018 and 2021 ended in a crash compared to 22 statewide. And this comes as San Francisco voters will be deciding proposition e that would change the Police Pursuit policy to allow the police to chase suspects in felonies and violent misdemeanors. Happening today, the four finalists for the job of Oakland Police chief will introduce themselves to the public at a special meeting of the Police Commission. Ktvu andre senior in studio to talk to us about this candidates forum. Andre. And also why oakland mayor shang tao is boycotting the event. Well, good morning to you, garcia. For the first time, the public will get to see and hear all four candidates while each finalists can make their case for the chief job, mayor shengtao says tonights forum is a terrible idea and a disservice to the city. The mayor sent a letter to the Police Commission in which she called the forum, quote, detrimental and attracting the best candidates. Now, since december, she has met with several Law Enforcement leaders nationwide who have shown interest in the job. But mayor tao says they dropped out when they were told they may need to appear in a public forum with other candidates. Now taos letter reads, in part, quote, a forum identifying candidates places those individuals at unnecessary risk with their current employers and may also force oakland to enter into a premature bidding war with an individuals current employer. If they feel strongly about retaining them. Now, i dont know if anybody inside wants the permanent job because they see the politics, all the things that go on there. This job is almost impossible to do. Its going to take a unicorn to do it, that somebody has got to be incredibly special, unique, charismatic, great with the community. Well, the chronicle reports tao courted two people in Law Enforcement for vacancy positions. One is a Current Police chief and the other is a former police chief, and both of them are from midsize cities. But each person passed when they heard about this forum. The Police Commission submitted these four names to the mayor. All of whom have red flags of sorts. Assistant Cincinnati Police chief lisa davis reports indicates she has repeatedly been passed over for cincinnati chief. Former lubbock, texas, police chief floyd mitchell. He left his department and was not when he was accused, rather of not answering 911 calls. Now, lewis molina is an assistant deputy mayor for Public Safety in new york city. Hes accused of failing to improve city jail conditions, and former San Leandro Police chief abdul pridgen, who is accused of violating Department Policy and who tao rejected when he was on the commissions first candidates list. Now mayor tao says she looks forward to officially receiving the list of finalists next month. Tonights forum starts at 630 at oakland city hall. Anyone can attend or zoom in to watch that hearing. Dave okay, andre. Thank you. Time now, 716. Were going to get you to where you need to go this morning. Sal youve been busy. Is it busy on the roads now . It is busy. Dave and gasia, good morning to you both. Southbound 680 sonoma. We see slowing getting down from pleasanton. There was a crash just after the sunol exit and theres a longer line than usual. 880 is not as slow as it might be. I think that maybe some people are taking the advice. In case you didnt hear it, leave the door open to taking Public Transportation today. Dont rule it out because even though its dry right now, it may be wet. It will be wet later on. You dont want to be driving in the rain, do you . So, yeah. Uh, maybe you can work from home. Do something. This is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. Its dry there right now. There was some wet weather on the Richmond Bridge, so some commutes are already feeling. Some of the wet weather 717 i always leave the door open for this man. Its mr. Steve paulson. Close the door. Would you shut the back door, would you . All right. Thank you sir. Well, gasia asked me to join her on her 12 mile hike yesterday, and i was just too busy. You should have. I should have, because the weather was glorious as we say, temperatures were quite warm. In fact, i hope you got out and enjoyed it. Its the guys san jose, 70, santa cruz, livermore, oakland and vallejo all close to 70 and atherton and santa rosa downtown at 68. So today were warming it up. No, no, boy, temps come down big time. 68 to 54 for santa rosa. The city drops to 58. Concord to 59, and san jose down ten from 70 to 60. Dont be surprised if on saturday these highs are around 51 or 52. Uh, sal is spot on. Its just light right now, but this system will approach later this afternoon. This is a cold system. Cold air does not show up until late friday into saturday, so we have a ways to go. I do think the Russian River gets five plus inches of rain here. I think people are overlooking that as we go into sunday and there will be rain into sunday. I mean some, but most of it will be friday and saturday. Seeing some pretty good totals here. Forecast just for today into late friday, early saturday. Santa rosa two. Thats for Russian River. Easy, easy. San rafael an inch and a third that thats thats two and a half mount tam cam field, maybe san anselmo, santa cruz, ben loman getting into the inch and a half, but its the snow forecast at. This is just i couldnt tell you the last time i saw this homewood look at that 92in of snow being forecast by sunday at 3 p. M. Truckee 88, south lake tahoe, 83 kirkwood almost 100. There are some projections of 100 plus. So above 5000ft 5 to 12ft is possible. This is a Long Duration snow event. Whiteout conditions. Heavy snow, wind already gust of 100 over some of the peaks. I think palisades is on wind hold already this morning. Snow fall rates of 2in to 5in per hour. That is incredible. Honestly, our possible are possible, especially on friday and saturday. Now the snow level is going to go up with a strong south wind, but itll start to plunge as this comes in. Look at the projection on the trajectory. I should say. I mean look at that. This is really deep. These are all cellular clouds, cold, cold air right there associated with these. I would not be surprised. Thunderstorms, maybe even some funnel clouds. Eventually, as we head towards friday saturday out to the valley. But a lot of rain i think is going to fall marin county north. But its all about the snow here. And if youre going up, you better leave right now because after that youre on your own. But look for some just incredible amounts over the next 4 to 5 days. You guys. Thank you. 720 here, hundreds of people are being laid off at bay area Video Game Company electronic arts. We expect between 10 and 12ft of snow and about 72 hours in the sierra in the next several days, a blizzard warning is already in effect for the area of lake tahoe south to yosemite. Rasmus in studio here with the warnings and advice from the chp and emergency officials. Ali yeah, we want to start by showing you the conditions right now. Live behind me is a live picture of highway 80 at donner summit. You can see the roads are clear. In fact, you see a what looks like a snow plow or some sort of Emergency Vehicle driving down this part of the highway. Its not very crowded. Not many people on the road, which is a good thing. Thats what chp wants to see. But note you can kind of see how the camera is shaking back and forth. The winds are picking up now that this blizzard warning is in effect. It went into effect about six hours earlier than what we were expecting a couple of days ago. Palisades Mountain Operations Team reported this morning. They were already experiencing some wind gusts of up to 100 miles an hour in some of their higher elevations, as much as 10 to 12ft of snow is expected in the sierra during this 72 hour time span. Now, people who wanted to try and beat the storm left the bay area to head to tahoe last night. Avid skiers and snowboarders geared up and took their chances. The blizzard conditions are expected to possibly bring down trees and cause Power Outages, so tahoe locals and the chp are asking visitors to just stay away this weekend. Take another weekend because even if it doesnt, you know, even if its half of what they say, itll still be a mess. Not only the snow on the ground, but the snow thats blowing around in the air, which limits visibility considerably. Um, and thats what causes most of our problems. Californias Emergency Operations center has been activated in anticipation of this severe winter storm. The chp is warning that highways heading into tahoe are likely to be closed for several hours at a time throughout this weekend. That blizzard warning again, now in effect from lake tahoe south to yosemite. Right now, the warning is expected to continue until sunday. So we have several days of Severe Weather ahead in the sierra garcia. And dave, back to you, allie. Rasmus. Thank you. We have you covered throughout mornings on two. Our time is 737, an east bay wharf that was 120 years old, has now been removed from off the coast of richmond. Its an effort to restore the ecosystem of that area. Everybody understood that long terme there were going to be significant improvements to the bay from a Water Quality standpoint, habitat standpoint. Right now, chevron richmond removed the wharf that was just north of point bellotti beach park in richmond. The wharf was built back in 1904. It was decommissioned and in the mid 1980s, hundreds of piles of wood and 930 steel piles were taken out. As part of that removal process. Now, officials are hoping this will help eel grass in the area grow again and also bring back wildlife as well. 737 lets get outside Sal Castaneda youve already warned us about what this afternoon evening commute might look like. What is right now look like right now looks pretty good in some spots. Its dry. Its not particularly slow. Other spots are slower. Lets start with interstate 880 here. And you can see, uh, that traffic is moving along okay. When you get to some of the south bay commutes, northbound 17 is slow 85 and 280. Not all that bad. Uh, you know, 280 is actually looking pretty good. If you want an alternative to highway 101, as you heard steve say, it will rain and i would say, just be open. Leave the door open to doing Something Else today. Work from home. Take transit, because this afternoons commute is not going to be as good. And we keep saying it just to warn you, bay bridge right now it is backed up. The carpool lanes have become a little better, but the rest of it is still backed up from the maze. Now heres the man everyones been listening to every time he comes on. Mister Steve Paulson, who came in. Sal, on a serious note, tomorrow is going to be a heck of a lot worse. Looking ahead to the afternoon commute and what traffic that could bring. Yeah, or at least be open to it. You know, as i say, leave the door open to change your mind. Uh, especially if youre going later and you see it coming down. Steve said, just recently that tomorrow is even going to be worse for driving. So all this should factor into your plans. Lets go out and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. It is backed up to the maze metering lights are on so it is a crowded commute. There have been no major issues here. We saw some rain already at the Richmond Bridge toll plaza. Its not super slow, but it is going to be a little slow as you drive through the area. And if youre driving on highway four westbound, we have some slow traffic there. Bay point 680 concord to walnut creek and westbound 24 is slowing all the way to the tunnel. And thats because of earlier issues. So its not a great commute out there right now. The 750 lets bring steve back in to talk about todays weather. Now we do have some rain north. South okay. So cazadero healdsburg north. We are getting some light rain. In fact, our observer raymond, is up to a quarter of an inch already with 20 mile per hour winds in cazadero. And we havent even begun. Really. I mean, this thing thing, this front. Steve, stephen, this front has a wasting after 30 hits, weather hits. You dont know what youre saying anymore. But you know what . Im trying to say . 37, in truckee, south lake tahoe, 38. Thats a strong south wind. There are wind holds on some of the resorts. Uh, it will be a wind. There have been gusts to 100mph already at some of the peaks. And there will be 55 to 75 mile per hour winds on 50 and 80 more likely coming in tonight. Tomorrow especially tomorrow. Look at all that cold air coming down from the gulf of alaska. And its going to set up for what looks to be an incredibly active pattern here. Well get good rain out of this. Im out on a limb saying we are under forecasting rain for about marin county north. Im not im going out with both rain guns blazing, if you will. Here. I think there will be some five six inch amounts up in Russian River here. And good rain. Itll be a cold rain for us, but this is really about the snow. 2 to 4ft. Shasta lassen, donner pass, 6 to 12ft. And around lake level, a lake level alone, 4 to 8ft. Looks likely here. So that blizzard warning already started. Goes through 10 a. M. Sunday, thursday, friday, saturday into sunday. Thats a rarity to see it that long of a duration. We get the rain developing already. Its already started to the north. Itll sweep in for everyone else later on. Really though, friday and saturday, the big days if you will. 50 on the temps. Familiar sights smashed out car windows. And if it seems like this is happening more, its not your imagination then the latest numbers indicate muni ridership in San Francisco is on the rise. The three factors being attributed to the return of riders plus the sierra bracing for heavy snowfall. Steve is timing out when the heaviest snow will blanket the mountains. From ktvu icu fox two news this is mornings on two. Welcome to mornings on two at 8 00. As you look live across the oakland estuary toward San Francisco and you see what the day is shaping up to be like, pretty darn gloomy outside this morning. Thank you so much for joining us. Im andre senior. Good morning. Im garcia mikaelian. It is thursday, february 29th, leap day. Weve been talking about the start of the storm for a week now. Steve paulson it certainly looks like its here. What does it feel like out there . Its just beginning. Just beginning. And it will be more so tonight and for sure friday saturday. But weve already had some okay rain up in the Russian River area and also west of healdsburg. And itll get here. Clouds are increasing rapidly here and the wind is picking up for some. But again this has a ways to go. I mean, the front is still pretty far back here a little bit. Thats right. Back in here. Right back in there. So it has a ways to go. But its overrunning the warm sector. It will rain. No doubt about it. And morning overcast drizzle or light rain especially north. Cloudy cooler rain develops again though. Today is kind of the appetizer. The main course will be friday into saturday with 50s on the temps that morning. Commute good bad. I try and listen, but ive been a little busy today. Uh, its not. Its not great. But steve, you are smoother than a fresh jar, skippy, let me tell you that much. Thats pretty good right now. Westbound 24 is the opposite. Its slow, its rough. We had a couple of minor stalled vehicles, but look at it. Its almost at a standstill and maybe a little bit of the rain is moving through. You need to give yourself extra time and just be patient. Today, on a day where its going to rain. And you heard steve say tomorrow might even be slower. It might be more rain, it might be slower. So go ahead and plan ahead. Traffic on 80 is slow as you get down to the macarthur maze, and at the bay bridge, theres a bigger backup up 801. Lets get back to the desk. All right. From the roads to Public Transit now, new numbers show muni ridership in San Francisco is increasing, and that is a promising sign after it dropped significantly following the pandemic. Ktvu Bailey Ocarroll is at the Salesforce Transit Center. With those numbers, bailey. Hey good morning. Andre. Yeah, muni ridership is up 25. Its nearing that 70 mark compared to prepandemic levels. So of course, that is good news. Now we have moved spots. We are live here at the corner of van ness and union, where it was raining a little bit ago. And you know, this gross kind of wet weather is not keeping people from taking muni to work. Weve talked to a number of people who say they rely on it. Five days a week to get to and from work. Now, the Transit Agency says weekday commuters were really the backbone of their ridership before, for the work from home, wave happened after the pandemic, so they had to pivot. What did they do to come back . Well, the agency says they focused on three things cleanliness, safety and reliability. They added staff and cameras at stops and in busses on light rails to deter crime and criminals. They are ensuring station stops and vehicles are clean and on top of this, delays down more than 75. Now we have been out here all morning asking how riders feel about muni, if they think all those things are accurate, if its as clean as muni officials say, if its on time as they say, and weve been asking people who are waiting to get on the 49, which runs up and down van ness this morning, they tell us, though, a lot of them, they still dont feel safe on this line. Theres a lot of people Mental Health problems, so theyll get in the bus and then they sometimes they will even threaten you if you look at them. So it could be it could be dangerous. Now, many people said their level of safety kind of depends on the bus line that theyre taking. Everyone said they have noticed the busses getting more and more crowded and say, though, that they are almost always on time, that they check the muni app before they leave home. And they say those times do check out and they are accurate. Now. Muni also did a survey to find out just how people are feeling about muni, and i will say that according to that survey, people are noticing the changes that muni has put in place. Almost 10 of people or excuse me, 10 of riders say they have increased satisfaction in the service. Reporting live in San Francisco. Im Bailey Ocarroll, ktvu, fox two news. Bailey, thank you. Across the bay here, a new video from oakland of some of the latest car break ins in that city. This is what happened at fourth and madison, near jack london square. San jose police now have a man in custody in connection with a triple shooting back in 2018, 26 year old Miguel Vergara perez was arrested at his home in rohnert park. Hes accused of shooting three men during an argument in 2018 at a san Jose Taqueria on almaden expressway. All three of the victims survived the shooting was captured on surveillance video, so the video shows just how gruesome this act was committing this vile crime in a public area where multiple bystanders are located, including small children. And so you really see that in the surveillance video, Vergara Perez is now booked at the Santa Clara County main jail charged with attempted homicide. San Francisco City leaders say they are working to eliminate red tape to make it easier for prospective buyers to scoop up the Macys Union Square property. The Flagship Store is among 150 macys locations scheduled to close within the next few years, as the retailer refocuses on smaller spaces and luxury brands. The city may convert the 400,000 square foot site into multiple uses, including housing, office space and a nonprofit site. One thing i would think about is subdividing the space and inviting some of those activities and users that have fled the city in in, you know, the last decades, like nonprofit organization, ngos, artists, arts organizations and trying to track them into that space. Macys says it does not plan to close the store this year. It could remain open for another year or two until that property is sold. People in the bay area are being told not to drive up to the sierra this weekend because of the incoming storm, but some avid skiers and snowboarders are heading up today to try and beat the worst of it. Sports basement in berkeley field last night, with shoppers making some last minute purchases before heading to tahoe. While they know the risks on the road, they could not pass up a chance to hit the slopes for possibly record snowfall. Well see how much of it stays open. Um, worse comes to worse. Well just ski the Lower Mountain i got sleeping bags, hand warmers, lanterns, flashlights, a bunch of nonperishable food, a bunch of water, anything that i can survive on for at least 24 to 36 hours. Well, ski resorts are preparing for slippy, slippery roads and reduced visibility and closures on mountain passes. But some resorts, such as palisades tahoe, plans to stay open until at least memorial day because of the expected snowfall happening today. The third snow survey of the season, conducted by the California Water resource department. Theyll do it in the sierra at the phillips station, off highway 50. The last survey on january 30th showed that the snow was 29in deep, and with a snow water content of ten inches, an increase from the first survey of the season, which showed three inches of water content. The Sierra Snowpack makes up about a third of californias water supply. People who live in the sierra are stocking up on supplies for this weekend. Grocery and Hardware Stores are seeing brisk sales. Popular items such as food, warming, warm clothing, winter boots, snow shovels and batteries, Mountain Hardware and sports, and truckee is helping People Living and visiting the sierra prepare for the storm. Its the gamut. So were, uh, shovels, tire chains, uh, ice melt generators, lanterns, flashlights, batteries. Um, anything that you can think of that somebody would need for a power outage or a severe storm. And they are coming in for it. Well longtime residents are warning out visitors to stay away. They say this weekend is not the time for casual visit, as the roads will be a mess if the area receives even half, receives even half of the amount of snow thats forecast. Pge is preparing for the storm and says it expects the wind, rain and snow to cause Power Outages. Pga crews are in place in areas where theyve had trouble getting to in the past because of debris and snow. Pga also has helicopters and snowcats ready if needed. Customers in remote areas are warned that extended Power Outages are possible. Of course, we have you covered throughout mornings on two. You can also download the ketv weather app to stay up to date on the storm. It has interactive radar, the hourly forecast. You can also use the app to send us your photos and video of rain or snow, and you may see them here on the air. Time is 808 and some commutes are wet, others are not, but theyre slow. And steve said tomorrows rain may be even worse tomorrow morning. Maybe a bad commute this morning. Its dry at the bay bridge. Its wet at the Richmond Bridge, but later today will be wet for everyone on that morning commute. So give yourself plenty of extra time. Were looking at Contra Costa County right now. Highway four is slow, a little bit slow on 680, 24. I dont know whats going on there, but it has been not a great commute heading over west toward the tunnel, put a picture of lafayette. Look at all that crowding and getting up west. So i think a lot of people are either trying to make it in or maybe theyre going today. So they dont have to go tomorrow, which is going to be worse. Well see. 809 lets get back to the desk. Well, a closer look at how much it cost uc berkeley to secure and seize peoples park, which includes an 8 million expense. Then the four finalists for the job of Oakland Police chief will be at an open meeting tonight where members of the public can hear from them directly. Why the person heading up the critical decision on who will lead opd will not be overflowing with ideas and energy. Thats the San Francisco chronicle endorsing democrat katie porter for senate over all other options. Porter is easily the most impressive candidate. Known for her grilling of corporate executives. With deep policy knowledge. Katie porters housing plan has bipartisanfriendly ideas to bring homebuilding costs down. And the chronicle praises her ideas to end soft corruption in politics. Lets shake up the senate. With democrat katie porter. Im katie porter and i approve this message. It all started yesterday afternoon. The chase. That is when police in lafayette responded to a report of a robbery at a Fast Food Restaurant on mount diablo boulevard. Not long after, officers found the suspect vehicle on highway 24. They say it sped off north on camino. Pablo toward el sobrante. The Contra Costa CountySheriffs Department says the car crashed into another vehicle going in the opposite direction. There was a seven year old child in that suspect car. Not clear if anyone was hurt in this crash. A new report says Police Pursuits by San Francisco officers are more likely to end in a crash than Police Chases in any other major california city. The San Francisco standard analyzed data from the california Highway Patrol. It found 41 of the 115 chases by sfpd between 2018 and 2021 ended in a crash, compared to 22 statewide. San francisco voters are in the process of deciding the fate of proposition e, which would broaden sfpds pursuit policy, allowing officers to chase suspects and felonies and violent misdemeanors. It is 813 now. The four finalists for Oakland Police chief will introduce themselves during a special Police Commission meeting tonight at city hall. But the person in charge of choosing the next chief is skipping the event. Mayor shengtao sent a letter to the commission, which said that she is been talking to Law Enforcement leaders nationwide who have shown interest in the opening, but they dropped out when told they would have to attend a public forum with other candidates. Now, taos letter reads in part, quote, a forum identifying candidates, places those individuals at unnecessary risk with their current employers may also force oakland to enter into a premature bidding war with an individuals current employer, if they feel strongly about retaining them now, the Police Commission submitted these four names to the mayor, all of whom have red flags. Assistant Cincinnati Police chief lisa davis reports indicate she has repeatedly been passed over for cincinnati chief. Former lubbock, texas, police chief floyd mitchell. He left after his department was accused of not answering 911 calls. Lewis bonilla is an assistant deputy mayor for Public Safety in new york city. Hes accused of failing to improve city jail conditions, and former San Leandro Police chief abdul pridgen, who is accused of violating Department Policy and who tao rejected when he was on the commissions first candidate list. I dont know if anybody inside wants the permanent job because they see the politics, all the things that go on there. This job is almost impossible to do. Its going to take a unicorn to do it. That somebody has got to be incredibly special, unique, charismatic, great with the community. Tonights Police Commission. Meeting is open to the public. People can also participate through zoom. It starts at 630. The Oakland Coliseum has a new sign now that the rooted in oaklands sign came down this week, as president dave kaval shared photos of the new sign on social media. It shows historic moments for the team, including a member of walk offs or a number of walk off celebrations from recent seasons. World series celebrations from the 70s and of course, oakland as own rickey henderson. Kaval says this season will be a celebration of the teams 50 plus years in oakland. Meanwhile, some big name former members of the oakland as are backing barbara lee in the race for us senate Shooty Babitt dusty baker, rickey henderson, dave stewart and tye waller announced their shared endorsement of lees campaign. Lee said shes honored to receive support from the players. Shes been a vocal supporter of keeping the as in oakland and introduced legislation last year that would require any professional Baseball Team that relocates more than 25 miles away. To compensate the local community and state, the 49ers are still looking for defensive coordinator after firing steve wilks. After one season, the mercury news reports. The niners are interested in dave merritt, current defensive backs coach with the kansas city chiefs. Merritt played four seasons as linebacker in the nfl before going into coaching, where hes won five super bowls. The niners have also interviewed two internal candidates, as well as former Los Angeles Chargers head man brandon staley. Lot going on in sports for us a lot lately. Yeah, yeah for sure. All right, uh, lets turn things back over to sal right now. Whos, uh, track king the roads. We can see the bridge behind us is packed. And of course, it is wet on the roads in some areas. Yeah it is. Andre and garcia. Good morning to you both again. This is westbound 24. Its improving a little. Its not great though. If youre driving over to oakland most of it is going to be slow. We looked at the Richmond Bridge. It had been raining there. The it looks like its dried off a little bit, but not much. And on 80 you can see some slow traffic. You know steve has been saying it will rain. Well its already raining in some spots and it will rain a lot more later on. Bay bridge backed up to the maze and metering lights are on. So just you know, leave the door open to thinking about doing Something Else because of the weather today and tomorrow. Steve, you say as we bring you in tomorrow is even going to be more of a rain issue for people driving far worse, much worse. South saturday, which doesnt apply to you and me, but those will be the two main days we are getting rain to the north. I know up by healdsburg and the cazadero and also in towards Santa Cruz Mountains. Ill show you that just a second. Its light, but coming in from the southwest. Look at that right there. Where where . Right there. See . So thats coming in there. Uh, ive mentioned this before. Ill say it again. Even though this is not a setup for the Santa Cruz Mountains, when you get a southwest facing moisture coming in like that in a strong jet stream, that can produce some steady rain. Next thing you know, one inch, two inch. So something to watch here for those areas as well. I think the Russian River, after everything said, gets five plus. I just dont see how they get around that there. Theyll be closer to the heavier rain and the jet stream. Rain arrives today. Lower snow levels probably saturday, so be a cold system. There will be some rain into sunday as well. This is not kicking out sunday morning. Uh it will decrease, but theyll still be some lingering around. Look at santa cruz now. 145 on the rainfall. Ben an inch and a half. Santa rosa two i mean, san rafael an inch and a third. Thats two and a half mount tam kentfield and san anselmo, probably napa to almost two. And thats just into early early saturday. But again, this is, you know, stealing our thunder, if you will, will be the Sierra Nevada travel likely to be impossible tomorrow into saturday, 5 to 12ft above the 5000 foot level. And already a blizzard warning is out until sunday morning. Thats a Long Duration. Long duration around lake level, 4 to 8ft. Feet look at that. Homewood 92 being forecast. Kirkwood almost 100. Pollock pines even 42. Blue canyon 5200ft, 75in of snow. My goodness. So a Long Duration snow event. Whiteout conditions. Already there are some wind holes on a few of the resorts over the passes 75 to 100mph. Snow fall rates are possible friday and saturday, especially friday, of 2 to 5in per hour. So this may be disruptive if youre going up there and getting stuck and not be anybody to get you out for a while, so keep that in mind here. We do have rain moving in. Uh, 37, truckee, 38 tahoe. Thats because they have a south wind. But once the system sets up shop and then its going to start to see those snow levels plunge as the cold air advection begins to drop in. Then historic wharf in richmond thats been there for well over a century has now been removed. How the action is meant to bring new life to the area from ktvu, fox two news. This is mornings on two. Good morning and welcome back im Gasia Mikaelian im andre senior. Today is thursday, february 29th. And our weather is one thing and its not boring because its going to be a little bit of everything. Lets turn things over to Steve Paulson right now steve, its a changing out there for sure. I believe it was 3 or 4 years ago. We didnt have any rain in february. Remember that . Garcia. Garcia. Yeah bone dry. Bone dry. Not a drop. And now here we are. We cant we cant stop talking about it. And march can can be a boom or a bust. Its looking like its coming in big time here for at least for the next 7 to 10 days. Rain started, some in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Light rain also up towards santa rosa, Russian River, healdsburg. Weve had some, but this front is still a ways away. But were getting to whats called the warm overrunning. The warm advection of the system. It will rain, no doubt about it, if it hasnt already, but heavier rain comes in later on, but light rain for the morning. Cloudy, cooler, 50s on the temps. Theyll be even the low 50s up for some on saturday. Friday and saturday are the main days, though. All right. Sals here at 830 in the morning. Better, worse. Same. Where . Where are we going . Well its about the same, steve, but its going to get worse. This afternoon. Dont believe me . Just watch as people are going to be heading home in the rain. So. Right now its dry. Westbound at the bay bridge toll plaza. But its going to be wet later. As you heard the man say. Also, we see traffic on the Santa Cruz Mountains. Always a trouble when its raining. And theres the south bay commute. It is going to be slow in parts of the south bay. So again, the storm is going to affect bay area driving conditions in the sierra. If you have flexibility, you may want to think about exactly what youre doing in your car for the next few days. Now at 830, lets go back to the desk. We expect to see between 10 and 12ft of new snow in the next 72 hours. In the sierra. In the next several days, a blizzard warning already in effect for the area of lake tahoe south to yosemite. Ktla, erasmus tracking all the warnings and advice from the chp and emergency officials, ali. Yeah. Garcia. The bottom line the warning overall, dont try to drive to the sierra at this point. Ski resorts and emergency officials are expecting this to be the biggest storm of the season, and its already on its way. In fact, behind me is a live picture of interstate 80. Look at how the camera is shaking here. Now, when we check this live picture about an hour ago, there was no snow on the road. Now you can see a light dusting of it and again, wind gusts are already up. Pretty impressive at this point. Palisades tahoe mountains Operations Team reports that they have some wind gusts up in the peaks. Have already 100mph. Now this blizzard warning is now in effect. This is a some video from the webcam from the palisades. It went into effect about six hours earlier than what we were expecting a couple of days ago. Palisades Mountain Operations Team again showing that they are having some strong winds as much as 10 to 12ft of snow could fall in the sierra during the next several days. There were some people who wanted to try and get to tahoe to beat the storm. They left the bay area last night. Avid skiers and snowboarders geared up and took their chances, but the chp and tahoe locals are expecting roadways in the region to be shut down for long stretches during this intense winter storm, especially the interstate highway 50 and interstate 80. They probably will have to shut it down just for the safety, for the drivers out there, for the truckers, highway 50 is a little bit more protected, but these snow levels are so low. Youre talking chain controls way down into auburn, down into placerville. Thats a lot of zone for the caltrans crews to be able to move. So even if you are able to drive to one of the tahoe ski resorts, they will likely be having to clean up and clear away all that snow before they can even reopen. Most of their lifts in the lake tahoe area, people stocked up on at grocery and Hardware Stores preparing to possibly hunker down for several days. Some of the People Living there tell us that theyve already received notices from cellular providers and utilities that Power Outages are expected during this intense winter storm gasia and andre, back to you. All right, ali, thank you. High School Student athlete from napa is in the hospital recovering from life changing spinal cord injuries after a weekend snowboarding crash. And that will be a game changer after calls are screened, staff will arrive in unmarked vans. Mental Health Officials say police wont go out on those calls unless its necessary for safety reasons. Its the 40th anniversary of a rodeo tradition that has roots here in the bay area. The bill pickett invitational rodeo tours takes place at rowell ranch in castro valley, celebrating the often overlooked legacy of black cowboys. The Event Coordinator says when the rodeo started, black cowboys were not allowed to ride in all white rodeos and they were not well represented in cowboy movies and history. The theme of the bill pickett invitation rodeo is the greatest show on dirt. The only western people that we saw were, of course, nonafrican american, even though one out of every four cowboys back in the west was was an african american. We were left out of the history books. Okay. And bill pickett was a black cowboy born in 1870, and he became one of the best known and greatest cowboys in history. Pretty cool. All right. 838 now and east bay wharf, thats 120 years old, has been removed from off the coast of richmond in an attempt to restore the ecosystem of that area. For everybody. Understood that long time there were going to be significant improvements to the bay from a Water Quality standpoint, habitat standpoint, chevron richmond removed the wharf that was just north of point melotti beach park in richmond that wharf was built way back in 1904 and decommissioned in the mid 1980s. Hundred of piles of wood and 90 steel piles were taken out as part of this removal process. They hope this will help eelgrass in the area grow again and also bring back wildlife as well. If you havent been to the area point melody in richmond, its like not super high on everyones radar. Yeah. Its beautiful. I mean, its not always crowded and its really lovely. Rich history there stretching along from berkeley, emeryville, right along point richmond. Theres a lot there. Youre right. Thats a good point. Good point. All right. Some rain has returned now to see the radar beam doesnt pick up sometimes whats below the. So youre seeing light rain especially northern Sonoma County healdsburg over into Russian River. But its been picking up there. I think theyre up to a quarter inch for some. Not just there, but also in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the last, oh, about an hour or so. See some of thats starting to pick up. So i do think some of the forecast projections on rainfall are underdone. So im going above on a lot of these. But yesterday i told you about yesterday. No, but ill be happy to do it because i hope you got out and enjoyed it. We wont see this for a while. San rafael, 70 morgan hill was 71. By the way. San jose 70, santa cruz, livermore, oakland, vallejo, atherton and santa rosa all between 68 and 69 degrees. Santa rosa, San Francisco, concord and san jose. That was it. You will like it and get nothing but cooler temps now all the way into saturday, when some of these highs may even be around 52 degrees. So significant cooling trend. This is a cold system. Thursday, friday, saturday and it will last at least part of it into sunday. I think Russian River gets the most here. 1 to 4in of rain, lower snow levels for us probably. Saturday looks to be the best bet to get snow on the peaks around here, but i mean, youre seeing some pretty good totals being through early early saturday. Therell still be rain most of saturday, so santa rosa two equals four in the Russian River, santa cruz. Look at these one inch amounts one quarter inch, half inch. I mean theres some pretty good totals being shown up on the projection on the accumulated rainfall here going into late late friday, early saturday. But its all about the blizzard warning 5 to 12ft of snow, maybe more above the 5000 foot level that will be over the over the next five days or so. Travel likely impossible. Coop was spot on. He was talking about, you know, you want to head up there, but theyll be doing snow removal down to placerville and auburn. Youre talking 1300ft to 9900ft. Forget 5000. 6000. They have to go. I mean, hes right. He is absolutely a great point to make. They have to do snow removal for a long stretch of 50 and 80. And the amounts being advertised here, forecasts are just i mean i dont see these are too often, but youre seeing eight feet at lake level for some. So Long Duration snow event white out conditions, blowing snow. Some of the snowfall rates friday could be 2 to 5in per hour, which means possibility along with the wind of downed trees. Maybe Power Outages. And if you get stuck up there, it may be a long time before somebody gets you out. So keep i would just, you know, you know, dont dont be that guy. So i would say im going anywhere. I dont care what you say. Well okay. But you dont want to have to, you know, get you from being buried up there for hours at a time. This is a Long Duration event we talked about. This is mainly a snow event, but i think well get pretty good rain out of this all the way into sunday, maybe even two more systems next week, you guys. And you know, you do have you have to go sometimes i get that you have no choice. But if you have flexibility, i would say leave the door open for perhaps doing Something Else rather than driving. Today, if you have that possibility. People are saying, i dont. I get it. This is a look at the 880 freeway interstate 80. I wouldnt say the 880. Before i start getting emails. Go now. Right . Yes go now. All right. We have a light rain already falling. Its been about a quarter of an inch for some up towards Sonoma County, over to the Russian River. Even some light rain into the Santa Cruz Mountains is a little bit. Not a lot. The system is on its way. Its a rain returns, really. The cold air doesnt arrive until friday. Saturday so ill mention it. But this is all about the mountains already. Some snow is beginning to fall. Some wind gusts have been closing. Some of the resorts up there 5 to 12ft looks likely. Extreme snow blizzard warnings started today and goes through sunday morning, which is really unheard of. Just an incredible amount of cold air advection coming in as an overwater trajectory, a roaring jet stream, not only a upper levels, but also at the low level jet thats at 5000ft will just funnel in deep moisture up into the mountains. You cool it, condense it, youre going to get a lot of snow. And thats what were looking for. Now, just as in precipita ation. I mean, im seeing some totals here of at least 12ft over the next week or so, above 6500ft, 7000ft. I think we get some pretty good rain, especially marin county north. I think were under forecasting this and its already started. And this is just the warm advection rain coming in. So i would expect some pretty good totals here. But this is more about the sierra which is going to be just painted with measured in feet, a multiday event snow level could get down to about 1500ft, 6 to 12ft of snow looks likely at donner pass, if not more, above 7000ft and lake level 4 to 8ft between now and sunday. Sunday night. Thats a lot of snow. Low clouds, drizzle, light rain. Uh, rain starts to increase later. The wind will pick up. But really, i think friday, saturday , the main days, the main event if you will, 50 on the temps get ready colder temps, more rain, wind on the way will take us into early next week.
