Alleges that after saying the words, im not okay. Emerson actually pulled the red fuel shut off handles for both engines as both the on duty pilots fought him. A sense the handles were not fully pulled down. The on duty pilots were able to both subdue him and quickly reset the shutoffs, preventing a dangerous loss of power. San francisco commercial real estate professional Aubrey Gavello was sitting near the rear of the airplane and tells us what happened in her own words. I saw him walking down the aisle by himself. It didnt even seem like he was in zip ties or being escorted. And when i saw him walking from the cockpit to the back of the plane , it didnt even raise any flags. Just seemed composed and normal. Nothing out of the ordinary. The Flight Attendant got on the loudspeaker and told us that we had a situation and we needed to make an emergency landing. But before that, we didnt know anything was wrong. The Court Documents say emerson advised the Flight Attendant, you need to cuff me now or its going to be bad. After the announcement was made about landing, i turned around and i could see the gentleman in the back of the plane with in zip ties. But he was calm. In fact, say the documents emerson tried to grab the emergency door handle but was stopped by the Flight Attendant. Another Flight Attendant says she observed emerson saying, i messed everything up and that he tried to kill everybody. When we got down, the gentleman was escorted off by five Police Officers and the Flight Attendant got back on the loud system and said that he had had a mental breakdown and needed to be removed or something along those lines. Nothing that indicated we were in any sort of danger. I dont know if we all would have boarded the next plane had we known all the information. So its better that they kept it from us. Police say emerson denied taking any medication that he had suffered depression and that he had used psychedelic mushrooms 48 hours earlier. That he had not slept in 40 hours and that he had thought he was having a nervous breakdown. And get this while talking to the police, while talking to the police, the documents say he not only waived his right to an attorney, he also admitted what he did makes a big, big hole for him to dig himself out of tom vacar ktvu fox two news. Yeah. So many new details coming out today. That woman and the people on the plane seemed remarkably calm after what could have happened and well, they didnt know the thing was really interesting is when they got on the ground, they werent informed of anything other than he had some sort of a mental thing. The fact is, when that airplane was up in the air, nobody noticed anything because even though he actually began to cut the power, they were able to get him off of those handles so that they could reinstitute the whole thing. So the engines never lost power. But this was within seconds of when they would have had no power at all. Yeah, you just imagine what could have happened if he turned violent. But he said, please restrain me or something very bad is going to happen. All right, tom, thank you. All right. Now to some breaking news in oakland. In a News Conference today, opd announced its setting up a social media account this weekend on x and on instagram. If people see auto burglaries, they are asked to post that information to those accounts, either in a thread or instant message, and that information will go out instantly to opd officers in the field this weekend were going to have plainclothes team decoys, air asset, its marked units, and what were trying to do is catch as many people as we possibly can burglarizing in the cars in the city. If the program works, Officials Say it may continue past this weekend. The latest numbers show auto burglaries are up 36 from 2022, with more than 11,000 this year alone. Put people over robots as teamsters and labor allies sending a message and appearing prophetic. Today, they held a demonstration in San Francisco demanding the regulation of robo taxis. About an hour later, cruzes driverless permits were suspended. And ktvu brooks jarocz joins us now live from San Francisco with reaction and how cruz is responding. Brooks is this move by the California Department of Motor Vehicles means this long line of cruz cars thats sitting behind me here will not be rolling anywhere unless theres a human driver behind the wheel. Well, you. Cruz will lose cruz will lose. Consider it a timely foreshadowing. Teamsters gathered outside cruz headquarters in San Francisco calling for the selfdriving car company to address safety concerns as actual people behind the wheel would oppose. And the brain that know how to maneuver in sticky situations actions these cruz vehicles are dangerous on our streets. And now the California Department of Motor Vehicles agrees, saying the Autonomous Vehicles are not safe for the publics operation. And suspending cruzs robo taxi permits for driverless testing. This is now really a vindication of San Franciscos position. It proves that these vehicles were not ready for prime time. City leaders say they want to welcome the technology, but risk sensibly. I also think its important that we balance that with the appropriate Safety Measures to ensure that we are doing everything we can to not oversaturate our streets when were not necessarily ready. There have been a series of recent incidents from blocking First Responders to robo taxis freezing without warning. Some even ignoring Traffic Signals and one case where a car with a human driver hit a person crossing the street who was then struck by a cruz car that couldnt stop in time. This is an experiment that has failed. And despite what theyve said about making changes and responding to the needs of our First Responders and emergency response, weve seen no changes. Cruz has touted its Safety Record and released a statement in response to the dmv suspension, saying in part, we will be pausing operations of our driverless avs in San Francisco. So ultimately we develop and deploy Autonomous Vehicles in an effort to save lives. State regulators previously gave cruz the green light in august to deploy more Driverless Cars at all hours of the day or night. Now theyre putting on the brakes, saying in part, the dmv has provided cruz with the steps needed to apply to reinstate its suspended permits, which the dmv will not approve until the company has fulfilled the requirements to the department, satisfy faction. The Industry Needs to work with the city and county of San Francisco and state regulators in a mature, collaborative fashion that has really not been their hallmark up until now. Maybe theyll start listening now. If youre wondering what potential passengers are seeing when you log on to the robo taxis app, it says, well be back later. Weve temporarily paused our service. Cruz has not said when it will meet those regulatory requirements and has not said when it may reapply for those driverless permits. Live in San Francisco, brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news. A major setback for cruz tonight. Brooks thank you. California is among 33 states now suing Facebook Parent Company meta accusing its social media platforms of harming young peoples Mental Health. The Golden State Warriors tip off their season tonight by welcoming the phenix suns to chase center. Ktvu joe fonzi joins us now live from inside the arena. And joe, we are less than two hours away from tipoff. Yeah, julie from a new season. You know, its hard not to reflect a little bit when a new season starts and it feels like it wasnt all that long ago that we were out here. It wasnt all that long ago that we were out here back in may when the warriors were eliminated by the lakers in last years round of the playoffs, some pretty obvious storylines tonight. Kevin durant coming back as a member of the suns and playing before a crowd here for the first time. Here is here. Once during a covid season, but the first time the crowd will see him since he was a warrior. Also, chris paul, a big acquisition for the warriors during the off season. But when you think about it, think about the coach, steve kerr, and what the warriors have done under his leadership here. Kerr is actually starting his 10th season tonight. Kind of hard to believe. The warriors won four championships in eight years with kerr, and this is his 10th year really kind of turned this core of players into a dynasty under his leadership. But hes also a guy for championships here. He has nine and all. He was the player with the Chicago Bulls winning championships there, also with the san antonio spurs. You go a long ways before you find somebody else with nine championship rings. So they have Big Aspirations once again this year. And kerr, as much as hes been around this game, says you still get excited on Opening Night no matter what. I feel excited and nervous and you know, one of the things ive heard a lot of coaches say is over the years is if youre not nervous and excited, maybe its time to retire. So im glad to know that im not ready to retire. Steve kerr is not ready to retire. Everybodys happy to hear that. One little caveat about him. Hes playing in the final year of a contract. Will contract extension talks happen this year . Hes not worried about that. The warriors love him being here. And as far as we know, he loves being here. Hes got a good core of guys. Once again that expects to contend for a championship. We got more coming up later on tonight at 6 00. But until then, reporting live from San Francisco, joe fonzi. Back to you guys in the studio. Yeah well, itll be fun to see katie face off against the warriors here in the bay area at the start of a very long season. All right, joe, thank you. The San Francisco giants are expected to announce bob melvin as their new manager, according to the athletic. The San Diego Padres gave melvin permission to interview with the giants. Hes had a contentious two year relationship with the padres front office. Melvin, who grew up on the peninsula, played three of his Ten Major League seasons for the giants. He also spent 11 years as manager of the oakland as and several seasons managing the Arizona Diamondbacks and seattle mariners. Still ahead tonight, the search is on for some puppet poachers. Operation summit set to get underway next month. The major event is expected to be a big boost to the local economy, but some businesses are worried the conference will have the opposite effect. Ktvu is christian captain joins us live from city hall. And christian, we are learning more about the impact the event will have on the city. Yeah, thats right. The mayor today was talking about the upsides, but others are concerned that the conference could cause chaos on the streets. The Asia Pacific Economic cooperation summit is expected to draw World Leaders and Economic Partners from 21 countries to San Francisco to discuss Common Concerns from november 11th to the 17th. The mayor announcing that graton resort and casino is the events premier sponsor after putting up more than 4. 5 million. The city says a summit of this magnitude hasnt happened since the city hosted the creation of the United Nations in 1945. We anticipate that almost 53 million into our local economy, whether thats Hotel Tax Revenue to our restaurants, our Small Business is this is going to be significantly financially impactful for the people here in San Francisco. So now were learning more about the impact the event will have around the city, including security measures from the federal government that will shut down travel and transit and security zones in the south of market area surrounding the Moscone Center in nob hill and along the embarcadero. The board of supervisors considering a resolution to urge the city to inform and protect those impacts by aipac. Brandon lee is among those expressing his concerns, saying apec has negatively impacted native communities, particularly in the philippines. And he worries about the impact the summit will have on the city. Its only good for those who are wealthy and elite but bad for people in San Francisco, where local businesses senior citizens, disabled people all will have a difficult time getting around and the apec pushes everyone out. City leaders say they hear those concerns and are already working to inform people and mitigate any transit or potential economic impacts. We know theres going to be impacts. We know that there are people who are concerned. Were going to do everything we can to address what peoples concerns are. But make no mistake, this is going to have a Significant Impact on our economy. The mayor also acknowledging concerns about street issues. She said that while there arent encampment issues in the areas that will be hosting the summit, those experiencing Mental Health crises and drug and alcohol dependency sometimes wander into those areas. Another beautiful fall day in the city. Kind of cool on the coast. The fog came in and this morning we had dense fog in parts of the bay. Well, many parts of the bay area, the valley fog that time of year started to show up. And so that took a while to burn off. And temperatures today slightly cooler because of those fog choices. But we will cool further as we go through time here. The temperatures today have come down a little just a bit. But on wednesday and thursday and friday, thats the big drop. So were going to get kind of into a weather pattern here. That is well, its a little early. Quite frankly. You know, were talking about little snow up in the mountains potentially on wednesday, maybe again on friday. But right now, wednesday looks like the best chance theres more moisture in the in the system. But the snow levels will be high, 7000ft, maybe an inch or two at best. And then that friday system, which looks good a while yesterday or last night at this time for more snow in the mountains. It looks like it just doesnt have any moisture to tap into. But the main impact for us, all of us in the bay area, will be just cooler. Lower temperatures also some wind tomorrow as that system passes through. Ill put in this. This is the model and look at the colors that tells you where the wind is. So right now, the wind is kind of offshore up around point reyes. So you see the yellows, nothing yet. But then right around and here, where is it . Right, right around there. Right around 12 00 on wednesday. You see that 24 miles an hour in fairfield, 24 in oakland. These are not necessary. Chilly fire winds. Theyre more north northwest, but it will be breezy fuel moistures are high because of the rain, which is good news. But breezy conditions, well probably see gusts up to 25 to 35 miles an hour as we go into wednesday afternoon. So as you look outside, lets see, you can see the fog. You kind of you kind of can at least you can imagine it out there as you look towards the coast, sunset, getting a little earlier each night when i come back, well look at the forecast and how these next two week cold system will have an impact on us actual specific temperatures for your neighborhood. Ill see you back here in a few minutes. Bill. Thank you. Its back to the drawing board for house republicans. Coming up, what prompted the latest nominee to drop out . Just hours after getting the nod at oaklands first friday faces a potentially turbulent future. Coming up at 6 00, a closer look at why organizers say the cos are welcome to big tobaccos fantasyland. The industrys idea of a healthier tomorrow. Where vapes are deemed safer. Nevermind that theyll increase your risk of lung cancer. And theyre antiaging. Because youre more likely to die younger from a stroke. In big tobaccos fantasyland, the deadliest industry can rebrand itself as your friend. Majority whip. Excuse me, tom emmer ended his bid just hours after he was nominated. He faced fierce opposition from the right flank of his party, fueled by former President Trump. The house has now been without a speaker for 21 days, and for republicans, its back to square one. It took five secret ballots for republicans to name minnesota congressman tom emmer. Their latest pick for house speaker. It took a few hours and a social media post from former President Trump for him to drop out. Were in a situation where we remove the speaker, remove the majority leader from being speaker, remove jim jordan from being speaker. Every Single Person thats one. The longer this drags on, the more likely voters are going to be to remember it next november. So it appears that almost all of the Republican Caucus is ready to move on just in order to avoid that kind of political fallout. Two of the nine men considered for speaker voted to certify the 2020 Election Results against trumps wishes. Emmer was one of them. Mr. Trump was asked about the race monday. Were looking at a lot of people and, you know, im sort of trying to stay out of that as much as possible. But theyll get it straightened out. That sentiment did not last long after emmer secured the vote, trump wrote on truth social quote, he never respected the power of a trump endorsement or the breadth and scope of maga make America Great again, with several hard line republicans falling in line behind trump, it was clear emmer did not have the support he needed to secure the gavel. Now its back to the drawing board for republicans about unifying our conference, getting us back on track. Theres a lot of work to do. You know, weve got an aid package to israel that weve been working on. Its been exactly three weeks since representative Kevin Mccarthy was ousted. 21 days without a speaker paralyzing the Lower Chamber from moving any legislation, including military aid for israel and ukraine. This is the first time i in recent memory or i dont know how far you go back where weve had kind of an open run at speaker as opposed to next next person up, whoever is picked next will try to do with mccarthy, steve scalise, jim jordan and now emmer failed to do unite the caucus, the Republican Caucus. At this point is so exhausted and probably a little bit embarrassed, they just know they need to move on. Somehow or other, whoever is nominated next. Republicans hold a small majority in the house. That means they can only afford to lose a few votes from their caucus. For democrats part, they will surely nominate minority leader hakeem jeffries. Still ahead tonight, the latest between israel and gaza, including the message us officials delivered to the Un Security Council. Plus years of work stolen in one night. Mayor Richard Bissen announcing all of west maui except burned out sections of lahaina will reopen on november first following a soft reopening in october. Officials asked tourists to stay away following the wildfires in august. The deadliest in modern american history. But now theyre getting ready to make more than 11,000 hotel rooms available, despite thousands remaining homeless after the fires swept through. Were appealing to peoples conscience is i dont know how else to say it to see if they will do what we think is the right thing to help someone. If you have a vacant unit and you know theres a family that can use it, the state is now reimbursing residents up to 1000 hundred dollars a month for putting up neighbors or other displaced people. Part of a broader plan to get life back to normal on the island. Despite lingering concerns about toxic ash left over from the fires. I understand that people do have concerns and everybody has the right to their own feelings about the safety and while some residents drafted a petition opposing the reopening, others say theyre ready to start moving forward. The lahaina of today and the lahaina of the past hundred years is not the lahaina that was always there, and thats really important to remember because it remind us that it can be different in the future. Our officials also say this timetable is voluntary and each business should make its own decision about when to reopen in los angeles, matt finn, ktvu fox two news. All righty. Weve got a little weather coming our way, but its just that a little weather. The main impact will be a little bit cooler tomorrow. So today was warm like yesterday. Tomorrow will be a little cooler by maybe ten degrees, maybe 12 degrees. So it will be noticeable, but well still see highs in the 60s and low 70s. So this cool air mass moves in. I think the mountains are going to see some snow, maybe a couple of inches of snow up around 7000ft. And what well notice precisely the lower temperatures will be the windy conditions, the breezy conditions. So this is sort of the 2 00 period. This would be the max windiness, but 29 miles an hour at San Francisco. So gusting, thatll thatll get you gusts to 37 or 38 point raise will probably be gusting up around 33. So its going to be breezy tomorrow. Its not a fire wind, not a red flag warning. It weve had rain. So thats helpful. And again, its not a northeast wind, but its definitely a wind. So when i say not a fire wind, i mean, it wouldnt be helpful if a fire got started, but its going to be hard with those fuel moistures that have come up a whole lot in the last couple of days, especially in northern california. So tomorrow when i show you this shot, i dont know if ill have the shot up, but the weather bush will be blowing that thing will be its real windy right there at that san bruno gap where the wind comes in to sfo into that runway area. Here are the right now, temperatures 77 in fairfield, degree cooler than was yesterday in fairfield, seven degrees cooler in santa rosa. So whats the plan . A gradual cooling trend. None of this is as drastic or extreme. So its just sort of subtle changes, which has been sort of the weather word for the last or the weather words for the last couple of weeks. Weve had these sort of subtle change patterns. But you look at that and you say, okay, you put me down here and say, i dont know what time of year it is or what month it is, im going to say thats that looks like a mid october, late october. So this things got some low pressure up here. This system is the one thats going to come in from the north and cool us down and bring that chance of snow flurries to the lake tahoe area. High elevation. And then theres another one behind it. Thats a little more aggressive and would probably bring us a good shot of some sprinkles on friday. But it doesnt have much moisture attached to it. So if that changed, then friday could turn into kind of a wet day. But for us, but i dont see that as happening based on what the models are showing right now. So there is the forecast for tomorrow, cloudy day, not as much sunshine, therefore cooler air or lower temperatures as you would guess. And 69 in san rafael, 67 in fremont, 70 in san jose and fire danger. Man, were not its really good stuff here. The way this pattern is working out for us, it will get breezy in the afternoon tomorrow, especially in the Central Valley and along the coast. Ill see you back here at 6 00. All right, bill, well see you soon. Thank you. A petaluma Animal Shelter is taking to social media this week to share the stories of senior dogs and encourage people to adopt them. Got to go on tour with me and the island, just a 15 minute ferry ride from San Franciscos embarcadero is full of ruins, left behind by the many eras, including as a bird sanctuary, a place for imprisoned soldiers and a native american occupancy. We had a chance to walk into some of the cells where these prisoners actually lived. Here you see a sink, a toilet, and how tight these quarters are. The walls are only about five feet wide, nine feet deep, seven feet tall. This room is about the same size as a regulation billiards table. Jolene babyak lived on the island during its time while holding federal prisoners. That was when her father served as an officer. Most people never have the opportunity, the opportunity to go into a prison. And so thats a very good history to tell. And a kind of an awakening for people.
