Feinstein. People are gathering at San Francisco city hall this noon. As you look live there at the steps of city hall for a final farewell to the late senator. In less than an hour from now, Memorial Service is scheduled to begin previously open for the public. It is now limited to invited guests only. And there is heavy security around city hall. But well bring you the service live right here on ktvu. We have Live Team Coverage of todays Memorial Service. Our christian captains been talking to people as they arrive today. First, though, straight to ktvu political reporter greg lee with more on what to expect at todays service and some of the people who should be there. Greg yeah, gasia. Andre good afternoon to you. We are expecting a poignant Memorial Service. Ill step out of the way so you can see the set up. Nearly 600 chairs here in front of city hall as we expect a number of dignitaries and a mass of people who would like to pay their final respects. As you said, this was initially supposed to be a public memorial, but as of last night, citing increase security, they made this a private invite only Memorial Service that is due in part to the fact that we are expecting more than 30 members of congress to attend to pay their respects to senator feinstein in addition to the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris will be here in person speaking. In addition, were expecting recorded remarks from President Joe Biden, remarks from speaker emerita. Nancy pelosi. Senator majority leader. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer will speak as well as mayor london breed and of course, feinsteins daughter, Eileen Mariano will likely deliver very emotional remarks. Weve been speaking to people all week, garcia and andre. In fact, weve spoken to many of her former staffers who have told us that it is one of her final wishes, that of all the 30 years that she has dedicated her life to Public Service to the senate, that anyone who has worked for her has an opportunity to be here to honor her life today. As you could imagine, that is a lot of people who have told us very special stories, not just about the trailblazing political career of senator feinstein, but about the person behind the scenes, the woman who was so focused on helping other women succeed in politics, the one who was always looking out for them. And that is likely some of the stories we will hear today. The more personal touches to who this woman was, especially those remarks were expecting from her granddaughter daughter who probably didnt see her as senator, just grandma guys. Greg lee reporting for us live there in front of city hall. Greg, well check in with you a little later. Were continuing our Team Coverage now with ktvu christien kafton. Hes been speaking to people as they arrive at city hall. Christian yes, we are here. Yeah, ive never heard that i look like senator padilla, but were joined now by senator Barbara Boxer. And earlier, you were sharing some of your recollections of working side by side with senator feinstein and you said, although you might not have always seen eye to eye, you always had a priority with her. And that was that california was first. You know, when we came home to the United States senate , we were shocked to find out there was this sort of slogan going around the senate. Abc anybody but california. And we didnt understand it. We said, whats that about . Well, youre the golden state. Youve got everything. Youve got the beautiful weather, youve got the beautiful coast, youve got silicon valley, youve got hollywood, you know youve got it all. Youve got all these bases, these military bases. And we said, look, were a very large state and we have problems , too. And so every time there was an issue, we worked so closely together to convince our colleagues, im barely five feet. She was like, for me, she was a giant, i dont know, 5 8. Id say to her, ill take the short ones. You take the tall ones, we would get it done. And by the time i left the senate, california was really we had parity. The money we sent in is the money we got back. But when we went there, it was very different. So i think, you know , that was a good thing. And so i think theres a message in that, which is its okay to come from different factions of a Political Party because you can really get things done because you have different coalitions. Senator boxer, thank you so much for your time. I understand you have to get in. Thank you for your time. Thank you, guys. Senator boxer, one of the many dignitaries here earlier we saw reverend amos brown from Third Baptist Church here in San Francisco. Congressman John Garamendi came in earlier, recalled the close work that he did with the late senator in trying to protect lake tahoe, talking about the legacy that that still has to this day. Also recalling a recent visit with the senator saying she was still the last time he saw her grieving the loss of her husband. He said that he held one of the teacups that had one of the painting things that she had made of bouquets. Shes well known on capitol hill for her art, as well as for being a tough negotiator and a tough politician. We also spoke with some local leaders, including San Franciscos current fire chief who says that she grew to appreciate and admire Dianne Feinstein after watching her after all those years in office, both as mayor of San Francisco and later, of course, as the senator for california. She did it her way right up to the end. She voted the last day she was alive to keep the government running. So she went out on her own terms. And, you know, i really respect that and i respect her so much. And were just here to, you know, honor her today at guests have been lining up here again, as greg had mentioned, and as you have mentioned as well, this is invitation only. Weve heard that some 1500 people will be among the invited guests. The service is set to get underway at 1 00 here at civic center plaza, right on the steps of San Francisco city hall. A very fitting tribute to a woman who served ten years as San Franciscos mayor from 1978 to 1988. For now, were live in San Francisco. Christian captain ktvu fox two news. Christian, i understand its a pretty hot day in the city there as well. Its kind of one of those unusually warm october days in San Francisco. Yeah, very warm day. And if you take a look, theres not a great deal of shade. You can see some of the chairs that are set up here are on polk street, where there presumably a lot of the folks will be sitting that is out in the sun. I did have a chance to talk with the fire chief about that, saying that these are warm conditions and considering the heat, weather, any special considerations have been made and she said yes. In fact, they have an emergency plan in place to help manage the heat. They say that they are well aware of the conditions out here. And of course, the watchword, of course, for everyone is to stay hydrated and try to stay as cool as possible throughout the services. Christien kafton, thank you for your reporting. Well see you throughout the afternoon. We will, of course, have much more on senator feinsteins Service Throughout this noon newscast. And well bring you live uninterrupted coverage of the Memorial Service starting at 1 00. Now to some other stories were following for you. It was said to be open to all, but now it is for invited guests only. Well be able to bring you the service live as it happens right here on ktvu. Well note that a flyover is set to take place in about 30 minutes from now in city hall. Of course, is closed to the regular business of the day. At 90 years old, senator feinstein was the oldest member of congress and the longest serving woman in the chambers history. Before that, she served as a San Francisco board of supervisors member, then mayor. She was thrust into that role upon the assassinations of George Moscone and supervisor harvey milk and the people attending that memorial will have to deal with heat here. In fact, the San Francisco Fire Department is warning that its going to be hot in the city today. A heat advisory is in effect through 11 00 tomorrow night. And with the Memorial Service at city hall, the department will be making sure everyone stay safe. If they do have multiple plans in place to make sure that the viewers are hydrated, but also and most importantly, taken care of with compassion and care. This is a very somber day for america and for the world as we have lost one of our beloved senators, Dianne Feinstein. The Fire Department is telling people to drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activities outside until later in the day when temperatures cool down. Of course, in the inland, we can see easily over 100 degrees on some days. But 90 in the city is remarkable. Yeah, that is pretty. People are not usually prepared for that in San Francisco, from my understanding, the department of Public Health in San Francisco says anytime it gets above 84, 85 degrees, thats when they start to see some problems. So the heat can definitely sneak up on you. And today is one of those days already a warm morning. Definitely heading into a hot afternoon. So october heat temperatures in the 80s and the 90s. In fact, most areas today will be in the 90s, well up above the average. And with this dry pattern, especially this time of year, we are in the peak of fire season, elevated fire danger. You can see all the areas in yellow under the heat advisory for today and into a friday. This includes San Francisco, oakland, hayward, mountain view, san jose. Closer to morgan hill and gilroy as well. So definitely the heat a big factor and temperatures well up above the average. The average high for today in San Francisco, 71 degrees. You can see the forecast that high, nearly 20 degrees above the average. So a big warm up. It really started yesterday and it continues for today. Heres the satellite. This big circulation offshore. That is the area of High Pressure. In fact, whats interesting, you can see the clouds offshore, but they have no chance of drifting closer to our coastline because those winds are keeping things completely clear up and down our coastline. And as a result, temperatures definitely warming up right now. Take a look at the numbers. San francisco, 82 degrees. Santa rosa, mid 80s, walnut creek, 83 and san jose, 86. Look at this. This jumping off the map, 90 degrees at the airport in Half Moon Bay currently. So typically were talking about the real hot conditions inland and then the cooler conditions near the coast. That temperature will just switch down to 88. But this is one of the warmest locations on the map right now for the 12 00 hour. So completely in the clear. Here is our view from the south bay this afternoon with no fog to speak of. And this is the plan for today. Its very warm to hot, mid 80s to the mid 90s. We have that offshore flow sending that warm inland air all the way out toward the coast. And this area of High Pressure remains in charge for today. Tomorrow and into saturday. By sunday, we will see a pattern change that will definitely send temperatures down for the second half of the weekend. But today, get ready, were talking about heat as i mentioned, most of the bay area in the 90s, even a place like pacifica could be getting close to 90 degrees this afternoon. So warm, basically everyones hot today with the temperatures warmer than yesterday. And it looks like tomorrow is still very hot. So were going to add maybe a couple of degrees to the friday forecast, some cooling by saturday, more cooling in a sunday. Whats interesting in next week, some of the forecast models suggesting that we could have a real pattern change that could send in some rain clouds here. So by monday afternoon, monday night, there is a chance of some scattered rain showers that would be favoring the north bay and that might carry over into tuesday of next week. But at least for today, get ready for the heat. All right, mark, thank you. It is official. The wnba is coming to the bay area warriors executives joined San Francisco mayor london breed and the wnba commissioner for an official announcement. Ktvu Bailey Ocarroll has the details, including a bold prediction for the teams success from the warriors coexecutive chairman and ceo. A wnba team is coming to the bay area in the lakers are going to ensure that the now Nameless Team is successful and quickly and im telling you right now, we will win a wnba championship in the first five years of this franchise, the team will Start Playing games in 2025. Me games at chase center in San Francisco. But their practice facilities and front office will be headquartered in oakland, where the warriors practiced not too long ago. Our wnba players need to have the best facility, just like our nba players have. Were really fortunate to have the facility in oakland. Thats where i went to work for my first 17 years working for the warriors. Thats where steph curry, draymond green, klay thompson, all the guys practiced every day up until four years ago. Ncisco mayor london breed called this monumental for the next generation of women and girls in the bay area. This is just one step further to making sure that the public understands us and realizes the value of what San Francisco does in terms of being this place that is not only an amazing, beautiful city, but also a beacon of hope for even the next generation. Some pretty notable Womens Basketball superstars, of course, in the crowd for this announcement today, joined by politicians basketball executive wnba executives. One notable absence that was oakland mayor shang tao, the warriors were asked if she was invited. They said she was, but that she said she had prior commitments and couldnt make it. Was originally open to all but is now limited to invited guests only. Well bring you that service live uninterrupted as it unfolds here on ktvu. And our continuing coverage continues now with that Memorial Service. Ctvs Kristine Kathryn has been talking to people as they arrive. He just spoke with Barbara Boxer. But first, lets get straight to ktvu political reporter greg lee with more on what to expect at todays service. Hey, greg. Andre garcia good afternoon. The reason that this is now a private invite only memorial is because of the long list of dignitaries. As we await the start of this service at 1 00, i want to show you as theyre going through this slideshow of the late senator Dianne Feinstein on these large screens, as people begin to take their seats now scheduled to speak today, President Joe Biden in a recorded message, speaker emerita nancy pelosi will speak. The Vice President , Kamala Harris, will also speak. Mayor london breed senator feinsteins daughter, Eileen Mariano will deliver remarks. And well also hear from Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer. Some of those vips have started to arrive this afternoon. My colleague christian captain, just spoke to senator schumer about the impact of senator feinstein. Take a listen to what he had to say. If i had to pick up one word that i would associate with her, and there are so many good adjectives, but it would be integrity. She had that internal gyroscope, what she felt was right and what she felt was wrong. And that gyroscope propelled her to do many great things. With all the pushback. And she broke so many glass ceilings in many ways, she kept moving forward. And thats because of her integrity. She she was an incredible person. Those are the stories we expect to hear today, not only on the podium, but from people weve spoken to, spoken to all week. Many of them telling us not about the political giant that senator Dianne Feinstein was 30 years in the senate. Many years serving the city of San Francisco. But about the woman behind the scenes, the leader, the fighter, the woman who always wanted to help other women succeed in politics. Those are the stories that weve heard. And one other note on that weve spoken to many former staffers of the senators long political career. She said one of her wishes is that as many of them as could possibly attend would be at todays ceremony. So we know many people who have personal stories about the senator will be here today. It is sure to be emotional and poignant. Andre garcia, greg lee reporting for us live. Greg, thank you. We understand vp Kamala Harris and second gentleman has landed at San Francisco international airport. They flew with reps. Barbara lee, jared huffman, eric swalwell, adam schiff, scott peters, just among some of the people that are going to be attending todays service. So we continue our coverage now with christien kafton. Youve been talking with people about their memories of the senator as they arrive at the service. Christian exactly. You were just talking a moment ago. We actually just saw the Vice President s motorcade arriving here at San Franciscos city hall. One of the many guests here to pay their respects to senator Dianne Feinstein. Were joined right now by San Francisco District Attorney brooke jenkins. And you said that youd actually had a chance to meet with the senator fairly recently. She people say that she was still, in many ways the mayor of San Francisco, that she was dialed in to the very nitty gritty details of the city. What can you tell us about your interaction with her and what she was like . Yes, i did have the opportunity to meet with the senator last december, and one of the things she asked me was, was what were some of the key issues here that that i needed her assistance with. And so we sat for a while and talked about the fentanyl crisis on our streets, and she offered her support, her offices support to do not only anything to help San Francisco, but nationwide understanding that this is a nationwide crisis. All right, dr. Attorney jenkins, i know that youre in a rush. Thank you so much for waiting with us. I appreciate it. District attorney jenkins, one of the many guests arriving here today as weve said, we saw congressman John Garamendi arrive here earlier, senate leader, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer here as well. We also spoke with south bay congresswoman zoe lofgren about her recollections of the late senator feinstein. She was first all the time, first woman mayor. She was the first woman senator from california, the first woman on the judiciary committee, first woman to chair the intelligence committee. On and on and on. She was a role model for women and girls across the country. And weve also heard that there is going to be a flyover at 1245. So thats going to be in about 15 or so minutes. We understand that the blue angels will be flying a missing woman formation in honor of the late senator. And as we said, we did just see the Vice President s motorcade roll up here to San Francisco city hall. The Memorial Service is set to get underway at 1 00. Its set to last for about an hour. Well continue to have coverage for you throughout the afternoon. For now, we are live here in front of city hall in San Francisco. Christian captain ktvu fox two news. Christian, thank you. We continue to hear stories from across the bay area and far beyond about the late senator. Joining us now, a familiar face, former ktvu Political Editor randy sandoval. Thank you for coming back to see us here. Well, thanks for inviting me. Of course. Of course. You started reporting here in the 80s where our longtime Political Editor before retiring around 2010 or so, actually, i hate to say in the 70s. Oh, my gosh. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Never long enough still. What were your first thoughts upon hearing about the senators death . Well, sadness, as ive known her about 45 years. First met her among the first times i was out on the streets doing doing news stories. And one constant throughout her whole career, a seriousness of purpose. She wasnt a show horse. She was a workhorse. She didnt call attention to herself. She didnt have press conferences to call attention to herself. She called attention to issues. She was always very serious, always very devoted and stubbornly so, worked very, very hard. And sometimes her dedication would alienate people in the process. One interesting thing, just that christian said that triggered a side thought he mentioned the blue angels are going to fly over. Back in the days when she was mayor, she got a lot of grief for being instrumental in fleet week. Being here, as you know, San Francisco, especially back then , was an antimilitary town, very liberal, very liberal. They wanted no part of it, but she thought it was a good thing for the city, good for tourists, good for the business. And it helped out with the docks as well. Yeah understanding it wasnt very popular when the first began, but eventually became a tradition in San Francisco after many years. And shes credited with starting that. Randy, everyone talks about her, her work, dedication. And im curious to know in all the years youve known her and covered her, where do you think that dedication comes from . What is the root of that, that that stubborn dedication, if you will, to the position of Public Service . Thats a good question. And i cant honestly answer it, but i know she did have a rough childhood. She felt somewhat isolated. Her her mother was apparently abusive. She was a serious student. I know she was very serious as a student, as a young woman. But where she got that lifelong dedication, i dont know. Its interesting. But she certainly had it. She did until the absolute very end. We saw another familiar face a moment ago. Christian interviewed a former senator, Barbara Boxer, for decades, 24 years. Those two worked together as senators. Barbara boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Tell me a little bit because i know you covered them both together and separately. What was that dynamic like . It was a historic pairing. Well Barbara Boxer was always a bit more liberal than Dianne Feinstein and Dianne Feinstein was always more popular than Barbara Boxer, at least statewide. And back when they were first running, Barbara Boxer election was in some jeopardy. Dianne feinsteins never really was. She she was pretty much a comfortable victor. Well, before election night. And so if my recollection is correct, the last month or two, she gave some of her Campaign Money to the boxer campaign, took her along to all her or to all her functions because she knew that boxer had a liberal reputation and this is, again, it was a statewide race. And theres certainly conservative parts of the state. And she and she brought them along. And one thing thats unusual about that election back in 1992, you not only were they two women, they were two jewish women from the very liberal bay area. Right which also brings to mind that that feinstein is part of a unique generation of very successful politicians from this little sliver of the world. And im talking about their generation not even talking about Kamala Harris and gavin newsom. Now im talking about back in that generation, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, willie brown, jerry brown, philip burton, not to mention who knows what would have happened with George Moscone and harvey milk had they not been assassins. But theyre all from the same generation, were all from this little bubble in the world, and all had very large impacts on the work that theyve done. Now, i wanted to ask you about Dianne Feinstein. In todays world. And Dianne Feinstein would still be considered. You know, she governed here in San Francisco, a little bit too conservative. Right. But over the years, many people have said, hey, shed come around for many, many things that you know, terms of gay marriage, that type of thing. Did you see that covering her . Did you see that change over the years of her understanding more of what was happening . Yeah, and changing to it and adapting to it. Yes. And the change was organic within her. She didnt change because she held the finger to the wind, which we see a lot of that now. Right. We see people change because its popular to do. She was a true believer in what she believed, but at times she changed in fact , she was considered a bit too conservative for someone. She was first mayor. Getting back to the gay community, hiv aids crisis, when that first started, she was among those suggesting that the bathhouse is closed because there was, you know, it could spread and that was a very unpopular position. But at the same time, she was securing all kinds of funding for aids research and hiv and hospital care. In fact, the city budget was greater than the federal budget for aids back then. So she was taking it very seriously. And also so there was once upon a time a little rift between gavin newsom and Dianne Feinstein back back when gavin newsom first became mayor. Youll recall he was the he was the originator of the idea to have same sex marriages. Lets just jump the courts and do it. And it was a very big thing in the city. It got all kinds of National Coverage and some believe, especially Dianne Feinstein, was a big factor in the 2004 president ial election. And she thought and others thought and exit polls seemed to show that john kerry might have beat George W Bush in the re election, had not same sex marriage become such an issue . Exit polls, especially in states like ohio, where it was very, very close, showed that that was an issue and that a lot of people there resented that and didnt want any part of that and thought that the democrats would bring that along. Well she had her finger on the pulse of that understanding. She held a press conference. She held she had a press conference outside her house the next morning. She said too much, too fast, too soon. So often we see these services happen in washington, d. C, not the case here. The senator herself and her family made the decision to hold it in her hometown of San Francisco. The service itself is going to be get started in about 15 minutes or so. Were going to be providing live coverage for you live at uninterrupted. If i can bring in longtime ktvu Political Editor now former Political Editor randy sandoval. That decision to have this here in the city. Randy i would assume that the senator had time to discuss these you know, this happening with her family before the end. Can you tell me a little bit about what that decision says to you to have this here in the city . It says to me she loved the bay area. She loved her city. She was very devoted. I remember back i last interviewed her, it was well after i retired from here, but i was doing a podcast and i had a long interview with her just a couple of days before donald trump was inaugurated as president. And i was doing interviews with pelosi, feinstein, boxer, all the mayors about how they were going to, quote unquote, resist donald trump because you recall how unpopular he was even coming in here in the bay area. And feinstein being feinstein said she hated the man but refused to use the word resist since she wouldnt be part of that. She didnt want to define herself ahead of time. She didnt want to come across as close used to his options because she said, i have to remember that my job as senator is to bring things back to california and bring things back to the bay area. And if i announce ahead of time that im going to resist everything he does, where am i going to get with that . Now when push comes to shove, issue by issue. So she did fight against him, but she just didnt want to say it ahead of time. She was always thinking ahead. And i think thats one reason that she came across as too conservative to people. She was kind of thinking the long game rather than the short game. Again, as i said earlier, she didnt hold press conferences to lead a charge. She was very thoughtful and very reasoned. Is that something that we see missing now . You know, that thoughtfulness, that reasoning, that we see, it seems to be that we dont see that a whole lot. Well, its still there, but its kind of drowned out by a lot of the nonsense. And if youre in washington, for example, and you want to talk about something on a serious basis, but but you have i wont point to party or specific people, but if you have a clown show going on back there throwing bombs at some point you have to raise the rhetoric to get attention. So it is hard to be restrained and thoughtful and get people to hear you now. And thats really unfortunate. Yeah, you talked a minute ago about how her thinking evolved on the issue of gay marriage and lgbtq rights. Lets talk a little bit about how what thrust her into the mayors seat is ultimately one of the causes that she championed. Her entire political and personal life, and that was the assault weapons ban. She, of course, became mayor. She was the head of the board of supervisors when then mayor George Moscone and supervisor harvey milk were assassinated. I keep thinking of that piece of tape that we have, and weve played many times over the past week or so. Shes the one who announced those murders on the steps of San Francisco city hall. She had a very close relationship with George Moscone, and she talked about that day and her actions that day and her reaction to the killings and how it informed her for decades to come on the issue of gun violence. And she fought an uphill battle, almost as uphill as it seems now. Again, she got the assault weapons bill passed, but it sunsetted out after ten years because of republicans taking control of congress and the nra. But it was a big battle back then, just as it is now. And i looked up an old piece of tape. Theres one Almost Legendary exchange she had with conservative senator from idaho on it when they were debating gun control and let me read these quotes because he said idaho republican who was on the nra board, the gentlelady from california needs to become the gentle lady, very condescending. The gentle lady from california needs to become a little more aware with firearms, arms and their deadly characteristics. And feinstein got really the word starts with the p angry and she interrupted him. And im going to read a quote. I am quite familiar with firearms as i became mayor as a product of assassination, i found my assassinated colleague and put a finger through a bullet hole trying to get a pulse. I was trained in the shooting of firearms when i had terrorist attacks with a bomb in my house when my husband was dying, when i had windows shot out. Sen carter. I know something about what firearms could do. The bill was passed within days and its just like, wow, powerful, powerful message. And her retort is fantastic. Yeah i mean, you get to see the , the, the power that goes into her messages when she sits there. Well talk a little bit more about her because there are a few more things id like to ask you about. Some of the things that she did in the senate. But well send things over now to meteorologist mark tamayo with a quick update here on our forecast. Yeah, as you know, its a hot forecast for today, way up above the average. And we have heat advisories in place for a good portion of the bay area, especially out toward the peninsula and the south bay. So temperatures a good 15 degrees up above the average dry conditions. Well have to keep an eye on the fire danger over the next few days as well. The heat advisory in place right now right on through your friday for all these areas, San Francisco, oakland, mountain view, san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. So temperatures continue to climb for today and into tomorrow. Its hard to find the cloud cover out here on the satellite. The offshore winds really clearing out all the overcast and temperatures warming up. Look at San Francisco right now, already matching yesterdays high of 86 degrees. Oakland, mid 80s. Half moon bay, 88 degrees and napa, one sensor there showing you temperature in the lower 90s in San Francisco. You know, its a really warm day in San Francisco but its in the 80s but it will be approaching the 90 degree mark this afternoon. So just take it just be very careful out there. Not used to this kind of heat in the city. So heres the plan for today, though. We have the hot conditions inland, but very warm, almost identical for the coast. So mid 80s to the mid 90s, essentially, its a big hot day for the entire bay area. Should just put the word hot there on that map. This area of High Pressure wants to keep us dry and warm right on into the first half of the weekend and then by sunday we will bring in some cooling and then eventually a pattern change that could send in some clouds and maybe some rain showers into early next week. By monday, especially by monday afternoon, monday night and into tuesday. Take a look at the numbers for today. Lots of 90s oakland for San Francisco, 90 degrees. Santa rosa, 94. Fairfield 96 and san jose, 94 degrees. Heres. A look ahead. Your five day forecast pretty much the same story for your friday outlook. Weekend starts off warm to hot. Well shave off a few degrees, though, in your saturday forecast and then definitely cooling things off by sunday. More clouds, cooler conditions by monday and maybe some shower chances by monday afternoon that could carry over into tuesday of next week. Mark, thank you. Minutes away now from the Memorial Service for the late senator Dianne Feinstein. We have continuing coverage. Straight ahead, well look back at her long political career. And we will also bring you the service as it happens live. Stay with us she was a trailblazer for women in politics in california and in washington. Before we say our goodbyes here at noon ktvus greg lee takes a look at her storied political career. Trailblazer icon, political giant Dianne Feinstein dedicated her life to Public Service and broke many barriers along the way. She served 30 years in the us senate, the first woman to represent california in the Upper Chamber and the longest serving woman senator ever. Most of my positive energy toward this job, but her political career began decades earlier in San Francisco. The stanford alumni was elected to the board of supervisors in 1969, becoming the boards first female president in 1978. That year, a shocking act of political violence. Both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot. Feinstein was at city hall when the killings occurred. She found supervisor harvey milks body, George Moscones murder, at the hands of supervisor dan white, put her in the Mayors Office and sparked one of her biggest career fights. Gun violence, i believe to this day, if dan white didnt have a weapon, that he wouldnt have done what he did in 1992. She was elected to the us senate and soon pushed a federal ban on assault weapons in the 1994 landmark legislation was passed and lasted ten years. Feinstein has been advocating for its reinstatement ever since, along with other gun safety laws. If you give people the ability to easily purchase, use a weapon that can be devastating to large numbers of people. Some of them will use that. She was also a leading voice in legalizing gay marriage and equal rights for the lgbtq community. She authoring the respect for marriage act. Americans should be free to marry the person they love regardless of Sexual Orientation or race discrimination was not new for feinstein. She fought as the first woman in many roles and empowered many others. After my time, a majority were women. I appointed a woman city attorney, a woman treasurer with a front row seat to history along side other trailblazing women, but a long way. We have come in this nation. Feinstein says her biggest regret was a vote to support the iraq war. She later took on the cia, spearheading an investigation into interrogation techniques after 9 11, releasing this report is an important step to restore our values and show the world that we are, in fact, a just and lawful society. She was unafraid to speak her mind to friends and foes. President s are supposed to bring people together, not drive them apart, feinstein would passionately take on what she saw as the biggest threats facing our country. Global warming is happening, aiming to prevent and combat wildfires and deal with the effects of drought. How many times must a man look up in february 2022 . Feinsteins husband since 1980, richard blum, passed after a long fight with cancer. She released this statement. At the time, my husband was my partner and best friend for more than 40 years. He was by my side for the good times and for the challenges im going to miss him terribly. After three decades in the senate, feinstein announced in february 2023 she would retire, choosing not to run for reelection in 2024. Her health had been in decline and a bout with shingles led to a more than two month absence from the senate. When she returned, she faced questions and concerns about her health. But insisted on focusing on the work of solving problems and passing bills. Senator Dianne Feinstein leaves a legacy of service to the country and her community. A towering figure of San Francisco and california politics, whose life and career were both groundbreaking and historic. This is such a great country, and its been factionalized and trivialized, ized with rhetoric. We must stop that. We must come together as the great power that we are for the good of the nation. And i think of mankind. Thank you for your support. To today. The city of San Francisco the Memorial Service is set to get underway any minute now. As you just said. Garcia, the services
