News at 730. Feinstein certainly leaving a lasting mark on her hometown. Good evening, everyone. Im heather holmes. The late senator was born in San Francisco in 1933. And today the city started saying goodbye. The San Francisco gay mens chorus sang a special tribute to the late senator ktvu. Crystal bailey caught up with one of the members of the choir before their performance tonight. Theyre at city hall, crystal. Well, nearly 100 members. Both chorus, alumni and active singers, gathered on the steps of the rotunda in city hall to pay their respects in song. The chorus has a storied history with senator feinstein. So it was a very fitting farewell. A beacon for women in politics. She was for the woman, you know, and an advocate and friend to the lgbtq community. Americans should be free to marry the person they love. Fourth, senator feinstein was no stranger to the San Francisco gay mens chorus. She was present during their first performance on the steps of city hall in 1978. She would have been acting mayor after harvey milk and George Moscone were killed in the same building. And 45 years later, the singers returned to perform a tender goodbye to send her off in song. In this hallowed building where so much history has happened, so much landmark civil rights and human rights legislation started here and reverberated out to the rest of the country and to the world. Its a great honor. Tom paulino, a leader for the chorus, recalls beginning his political career as an intern for senator feinstein. Later becoming a staff assistant for her San Francisco office. Were it not for my time in her office, i would not be where i am. Our lives are incredibly touched by her, so for them to come back here, for us to come back here and to send her off in this way is a great, a great honor. The performance, concluding just about an hour ago, the procession should be beginning any minute now at from the city hall where the casket will leave. Yeah it really is remarkable when you see the number of people who have been touched by senator feinstein and who showed up today. I mean, you talk about that procession, but its going to take some time for that to begin. Yes, thats right. Thats actually was supposed to happen at 7 00. The cascade was supposed to leave the city, but because of the amount of people out the door all the way down, van ness, its actually very much delayed. Yeah, a real a real testament to how much she meant to people and how much she meant to the city of San Francisco. Crystal, thank you all right. Well, earlier in the day, a steady stream of mourners was at city hall to remember the late senator. They filed past that flag draped coffin inside the city hall rotunda, some with tears in their eyes, as you see there. Among the very first, though, to pay tribute was good friend and former House Speaker nancy pelosi. She joined the senators family at times herself, wiping away tears. She was among the mourners who wrote notes. Others left flowers. Many of feinsteins former Staff Members also turned out working for her was just the privilege of a lifetime, she she governed and thought about Public Service in a way that i dont think you see any more in politicians. You know, i work for almost 20 years ago and shes been a mentor. Weve kept in touch over that entire time, checking in on my wife and my kids, sending thoughtful notes, always there for mentorship and advice. Congresswoman pelosi will be among those eulogizing feinstein at a memorial tomorrow afternoon. Now, it was originally planned to be a public event, but due to increased security, it will now only be open to invited guests. And a special tribute was paid to feinstein during a big celebration marking 115 years of the historic johns grill in San Francisco. Former mayor willie brown talked about her connection to that famed restaurant. Dianne would be here today about to have lunch and about to tell some story of her experiences. Senator feinstein was a regular at jones grill for decades. She has her photo up on the wall. We have a tribute for her today. Now the restaurant placed flowers right there on the table by that picture of the late senator as dignitaries and elected officials came to wish johns grill a happy 115th anniversary, while they also reflect on the impact that feinstein has had on San Francisco. A huge reason why i even decided to run for office stemmed on a conversation that she had with my third grade class. She said to my class, she said, im the only woman thats running and perhaps the next woman that wants to run for offices in this class. The loss of senator feinstein loomed over the day. Still though, johns grill served up free lunch to thousands of people, marking its remarkable milestone of 115 years in business there in downtown San Francisco. And be sure to join us tomorrow as the nation bids a final farewell to the late senator feinstein. Our coverage begins at noon and continues with that Memorial Service starting at 1 00. And you can find more coverage of the late senator on our website at ktvb. Com as well as on the ktvu news app. Well, new tonight at 730, Governor Newsom today signing a bill that provides workers with more guaranteed paid sick time. And joining me now live to talk more about it is cammy blackstone, director of external affairs for at t. Cammy, nice to see you tonight. So we had about 50 laptops distribute suited at the Mission Neighborhood center. Thats awesome. Tell me why you chose this location. Well, this is all part of a huge project that at t has embarked on. We made a 2 billion commitment a couple of years ago to sort of bridge the Digital Divide and, you know, you do that through different ways, through adoption , which is teaching people Digital Literacy or through access to the internet. And we can do that through the Affordable Connectivity Program or through devices. And we got to do that today with Mission Neighborhood center in San Francisco. Weve given away 250 this summer. So last night, as part of Digital Inclusion week, we gave 50 laptops away to the alive and free omega boys club. And today it was Mission Girls at Mission Neighborhood center. But all together in the state of california, weve been able to give away 4000 laptops this year. So its kind of amazing. No, it really is great. But how do you go about choosing the recipients. Through organizations that i know are going to be following up the gift of the device with some digital training so that youre getting the Digital Literacy component along with the computer. And i try to mix it up with the neighborhood. So we worked with Charity Cultural services in chinatown and we worked with mission bit also in the mission district, and we worked with the kroc center, the Salvation Army after School Program in the tenderloin and a number of different organizations. So we try to sort of touch every neighborhood that we can and really focus on kids and youth that really need them because if you dont have a device, these days, youre kind of luck. Yeah, you really are. And boy, did we get a glimpse of how wide this digital, this Digital Divide is. During the pandemic. Nick talk a little bit more about how Student Success can really go hand in hand with access to technology, including laptops. Well, i mean, if you even think about yourself as an adult, like not able to find your phone for five minutes and you feel like youve missed out on your whole life, i mean, imagine what it would be like to be a child and being one of the few students in a classroom that isnt able to, you know, read the assignment on line the way everybody else has. And with distance learning, it became even more important. And you know, everything is done online now. If you want to sign up for a club, if you want to check on when youre you know, sports practices are, its probably all online or youre getting it on an email and you really need to have access to these sorts of devices. And this technology in order to really make it in the world today. Yeah i mean, we talked a little bit about what youve done so far in the bay area. Any plans for more these giveaways . Oh yeah, weve got more up our sleeve and this is also combined with a bunch of other things. This is by the way, Digital Inclusion week. We also were able to give a 25,000 grant to larkin Street Youth Services to help with their at risk of homelessness youth and transitional age youth with their Digital Literacy training. Weve partnered with the American Library association to roll out a whole curriculum of Digital Literacy courses that you can access at the library. So someone who doesnt have a device at home can go to the library and learn how to send an email, how to stay safe online, how to read an excel spreadsheet , all of those tools that so many people take for granted. So yeah, were this is our focus. This is what we do, and were going to do a lot more in the bay area and the whole state of california. Okay, good to hear at t helping the community and the focus of tonights neighbor to neighbor segment. Really appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thank you. All right. Well, another racehorse has sadly died at Golden Gate Fields, bringing the total number of horse deaths there to 5 in 14 days. The california horse racing board reporting that death today state documents show the two year old horse, which was named hanging haven, died today after suffering from a muscular skeletal incident. This is the 13th racehorse to die there at Golden Gate Fields so far this year. I want to turn things over now to our meteorologist mark tamayo. And boy, things really warmed up across much of the bay area. And in San Francisco, mark even in San Francisco. Yeah, typically we say, yeah, the fog is going to keep the city cool. Not the case for today. Look at the highs from this afternoon. Lots of 90s. San francisco, 86 degrees the coast. We actually have some beach weather pacifica in the mid 80s and it looks like this pattern wants to stick around for tomorrow into friday and somewhat into saturday. As well. So october heat temperatures in the 70s, 80s and 90s well up above the average dry conditions. And with this pattern setting up the wind direction, its a dry warm wind that boosts the fire danger. So well have to keep an on the fire danger over the next few days. A heat advisory for all these areas in yellow that does include San Francisco, oakland, hayward down toward mountain view, san jose, morgan hill and gilroy. Thats for thursday and into friday. Heres a satellite showing you this. You can see this big circulation out here in the pacific. Thats the area of High Pressure building in leaving us with lots of clear skies and still some very warm numbers. Its a 7 00 hour. This one site in San Francisco has not been moving around too much. Thats interesting. Theyre in the 80s concord, 84 degrees in san jose, 81. Here is our live camera looking out toward oakland completely in the clear overnight temperatures pretty mild in the upper 50s to the 60s. And as you can see here, lots of bright colors, 80s all the way to the mid 90s for tomorrow afternoon. So here is your thursday forecast. Its warm to hot. This area of High Pressure wants to stick around until by sunday well begin to cool things off and maybe bring in some areas of fog. Take a look at the numbers for tomorrow. 87 in San Francisco, 90 in santa rosa, concord, 93. Fairfield 95 degrees. San jose, lower 90s and morgan hill, 95. As i mentioned, those winds do pick up out of the north and northeast for the overnight hours somewhat. So well definitely have to keep an eye on the fire danger for the north bay hills and in the east bay hills. Its that warm, dry wind, especially this time of year, that causes our big concern for fire danger. Heres a look ahead, your five day forecast and pretty much the same story as we head into your friday. So warm to hot for your friday. We will eventually cool things off, especially by sunday and into monday, but definitely that heat wants to stick around for a couple of days. Heather okay. Mark, thank you.
