Now in the books. And the group had to targets and i refuse to be a passive by stander sitting in the white house like the hollowed out husk of a current president. We have. And you know who else is missing in action . Donald trump is missing in action. Well talk with a political analyst about who had the most substantive statement. Live from jack london square. This is mornings on two, the night. Welcome to mornings on two. The nine. Today is thursday , september 28th. As you look live across the oakland estuary where you see the fog is still pretty thick out there right now because normally you might be able to make out the skyline of San Francisco there in the distance and its pretty faded right now because all that fog in the air. We will check in with the weather in just a little bit to find out when that fog could finally burn off. All right. 2 in 3 millennials say it is in possible to disconnect from work. One poll surveyed 2000 adults and found that this generation believes it has too many distractions to be able to switch off each day. Millennials are known for being the always on generation. They frequently check emails outside of work hours, clear their inboxes before relaxing, and tend to work through lunch. This generation also admits to checking their phones first thing in the morning and average just 90 minutes of free time daily. Well, i guess im a millennial. Welcome to the nine and i sounds a lot like that to me because i do have a hard time relaxing. If my inbox is too full. Right. You know, and nothings important, even if nothing important. And its filled with all kinds of stuff. And im afraid i might miss an important email, which does happen right . So i have to make sure that im like, i got to mark that one. You know, let me delete this other ones around it and make sure thats good. And so, you know, like i was away, like away from my cell phone for a few hours, like when i was out of town in the middle of nowhere where theres no reception and it felt really good. I really didnt miss it because you couldnt check it. Because i couldnt check it. Yeah, because i didnt. I had. There was no cell service. Right. So there was nothing that i wasnt self control. It wasnt. It wasnt a control. Yeah. It was just. It was forced upon me. So i had to deal with the situation and i was fine. I didnt freak out. So i think its just a subject of us having the little handheld computer that we call phone. Yeah, because you can do everything on it, right . And its always with us. So if youre like, lets say you go get an oil change and youre sitting around, either you could scroll on instagram, um, which is fine, but if youre male, if your work male is on your phone, then you might know, okay, im sitting here, i might just get it done. Its outside of work hours, but that means when i get to work, those emails are taken care of. Do you ever leave the house without your phone . No. Never . No. Even like, just going to go to trader joes to get, like, milk and eggs . No. Isnt that funny . Well, you dont like my car. I need my. I need my phone for my car now. Oh, really . Yeah. I cant. Not. My car is fine. I cant not get into my car without my phone. Okay. Okay so, okay, let me ask. Do you ever leave the house without your phone . Occasionally i do. But im like, sweetheart, im leaving. Im going to trader joes for milk and eggs. I should be back. I mean, like, im going on some, like, arctic expedition, right . So i do every now and then. But i feel naked when i do that. Yeah anywho, well talk about this a lot. Yeah, exactly. Its just one of those things for sure. For sure. Buying flip phones now just so you can get away from the regular. I have seen that some of the millennials do that. All right. Lets focus on whats happening here in the city to restaurants. I know youve probably been to. They are historic there right there along the waterfront. But San Francisco says that they owe months of back rent and the port has sent them a notice as ktvu. Allie rasmus is live to explain. This is seen as another setback for a part of the city that is still struggling to recover after the pandemic. Allie yeah, we are at Fishermans Wharf this morning where 9 00 things just started to wake up here. Weve seen more tourists walking through. In fact, a couple of tourists from europe who just sat down to have breakfast here. Theres quite a few restaurants in this area. But in this stretch, theres only two that are open right now. This similar to nicks lighthouse is getting set up, but beyond this, at the end of the block, aliotos restaurant that shut down last year and now fishermans grotto, the two story restaurant at the end of this block, may have to shut down as well. It got an eviction notice, according to the San Francisco business times, the port of San Francisco , which owns and manages this property, says the fishermans grotto restaurant owes more than 300,000 in unpaid rent. Another restaurant around the corner called tarantinos also got an eviction notice for owing more than 140,000 in unpaid rent. And that restaurants been closed for a while. Theres graffiti on the windows and the metal bars blocking the front door. According to the San Francisco business times, though, both restaurants are owned by the same person who also owns tommys joint here in the city fishermans grotto. And tarantinos have a long history here. Fishermans grotto opened back in 1935. Tarantinos about ten years after that. Both places still have 13 years left on the 66 year long leases they signed with the port of San Francisco back in 1972. So if both places are evicted and shut down, it would leave at least two vacant spaces on this block of Fishermans Wharf. Now, we have tried contacting the port of San Francisco to talk and ask if theres any discussions underway to try and work out some sort of arrangement to keep at least fishermans grotto open. And that is the only one of the two we just mentioned that is still operating. In fact, you can find a reservation today on open table and other sites, but we havent heard back from them. Weve also reached out to the owner of the restaurant to find out what sort of plans are in the works to try and keep it open. Live in San Francisco, ali rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Ali, thank you. Well stay in the city here as Property Owners are listening to the citys request to convert Antioch Office space into Affordable Housing. City leaders say that eight Office Building owner responded to their inquiries about transforming their properties to apartments or condos. Five of them are in the greater mid Market Civic Center neighborhoods tour. The financial district ones near yerba buena. The plan would create about 1100 units if all eight properties were converted. New this morning, theres a heavy Police Presence at an arco station on telegraph and alcatraz avenue in oakland. Authorities say there was a burglary just before 5 a. M. A neighbor told ktvu photographer there she heard about half a dozen gunshots. We have not confirmed this information, but a bullet hole could be seen in one of the glass windows. Police say they havent found any gunshot victims yet. And were also following the situation on the dumbarton bridge. Just got off the phone with chp. Eastbound lanes remain closed because of Early Morning vehicle collisions. And the most serious involved a crash with a white suv and a silver pickup truck. An occupant of one of the vehicles was ejected onto the roadway. No word yet on that victims condition. The chp tells us all vehicles have been cleared, but the cleanup crews might still get up there to remove the gravel, which may have caused that crash. This crash had shut down both directions of the bridge for a bit, but westbound lanes reopened at about 6 a. M. Four people, including a teenager, are now in custody in connection to several robberies throughout oakland and berkeley. They were arrested hours after several holdups near the cal campus. Berkeley Police Sergeant spotted the suspects in a stolen kia sorento and chased after them. The pursuit ended in east oakland, near high street and carrington, where the four people were arrested. The adults have been charged in the past, ranging from car theft to stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry from the stoneridge mall in pleasanton. Im not like that surprised that theres like, robberies happening and stuff. Like i feel like we hear stories like all the time. It is frightening, especially like as like a woman and like that i do walk kind of like alone. Well, police say they recovered several guns during the arrests. The Alameda County District Attorney is reviewing this case before formal charges are filed. More bay area cities are turning to cameras and license plate readers to help fight crime. Piedmont has had license plate readers for years and says the technology has led to about 27 arrests every year. There are now plans to install them in other cities. One of them is oakland, which is experiencing a sharp increase in crime. We know that sometimes were looking for that needle in the haystack. So thats exactly what the alpr technology is there to do to be a force multiplier to help us identify those needle in a haystack and deal with them. Some experts cast doubt on the efficacy of the cameras and say they often dont help solve crimes. A 2010 study by George Mason University found while license plate readers increase the likelihood of finding stolen cars, they dont lead to an increase in arrests. The study also concluded that cameras are more effective when many of them are installed and you have to factor in installation costs, maintenance costs. This stuffs not cheap. And so we have to ask ourselves, do we want to divest our Police Resources into tools that may or may not help . We have to be willing to try Something Different. We have to be willing to give technology a chance. Just months ago, Oakland Police shut off their license plate readers and dozens of cruisers and acknowledged last year they got no investigative leads from them. But they did help them recover 34 cars. Oakland Council Member Kevin Jenkins says hes pushing for the license plate readers and an increase in staffing, hoping those two things together will help reduce crime. Some gas prices around the bay are jumping dramatically. In fact, they jumped dramatically overnight. Todays average price in San Francisco is 6. 04. Yesterday was 581 a gallon. Thats a 22 cent increase overnight in oakland, prices jumped 0. 19 overnight to 5. 90. And gas prices in san jose jumped 0. 19 to 588. Were nearing 6 a gallon now for regular gallon of gas, similar to levels we saw a year ago. All right. Lets go over to Steve Paulson now for a look at the forecast. I see a sun behind you there, steve. Gas prices never dropped 0. 20 overnight. Do they . No, no. Its always up 0. 20. It is a nice forecast today. Then tomorrow well start to see some changes here. We had a little bit of fog coming back. I think most of that is retreating already. So itll be nice to see a little haze maybe in there mixed in. But if you enjoyed yesterday, youll like today. Even though yesterday was clear on the coast, thats not the case so far today. But i think were seeing more sunshine. Already had some 40s now its 50s and 60s. The city and Half Moon Bay are both. At 61. Santa rosa recovered from 49. Now 60, 62 mountain view, they were down to 51. Menlo park was at 49. Now 52 and 66 already in brentwood. Fairfield 62, still winning out. Theres a little northerly breeze in some of the higher elevations. So that usually translates into by the time it gets to the surface, a little bit warmer pattern, but its not lasting. Thats been the its been that way since may , either to and out or three and out. We have not had any extended heat. I dont see anything anytime soon, at least not yet. This low is saying, you know what, im on my way. Itll be here starting friday, friday night into saturday for sure. And temperatures goes. Itll be a rapid drop here on the temps will drop a good 15 degrees might even be up or 60s for some on saturday for highs thatll be in the 80s today today nice to mild to warm i think a breeze will pick up late today though as that system inches closer then this low is coming right over us on saturday morning alone. Its more west so it picks up a little more moisture. And the mere fact that its kind of a cold core system, the lapse rates alone will generate some rain. So rain will return here. The wind will pick up. This does not look like a you know, a howling wind producer, but well see some pretty good blustery conditions on the coast. And i think in some of the higher elevations, rainfall a couple one hundredths to a 10th of an inch, maybe a quarter to a third would probably be the extent of it for us, although there will be heavier amounts in the mountains. South lake tahoe could be up to around a half inch of rain around tahoe. Thats kind of the projection there. Also in the mother lode could be some thunderstorm activity. You can watch the evolution of this low as it begins to drop in right there. Its right over us on saturday morning. I mean, you know, and again, its picked up a little bit of moisture. So it has more to work with now versus going over, say, nevada or so. But this will be south of us by probably sunday morning. So the 49 hour forecast looks to be improving there. I think itll be partly cloudy, maybe breezy to windy. And then well have to keep an eye and see if we get a little offshore breeze starting next wednesday or thursday. But for saturday, saturday night, early sunday, maybe some snow above the 8000 foot levels, the way it looks for right now or again, doesnt look like a lot, but there could be a little bit there 70s 80s through the interior 60s 70s, closer to the bay. We are looking for a cooling pattern friday cloudy on saturday and then windy on sunday. You guys. Thank you steve. We are another day closer to a possible Government Shutdown. Next here on the nine. What happens if republicans cant reach an agreement and the effect we could see close to home . Then an awful lot of one liners and zingers. The main targets of the debate were President Biden and former president donald trump. Trump is the gop front runner, but he once again skipped that debate. So joining us now for more insight is david lev so much fos today. Of course. All right. So you watched the debate last night. It was it was interesting. But but you know what this debate is really about for all these seven candidates is really trying to crack and become a real contender for to donald trump, who is garnering so much of the support right now. So it really is a point of all of this, right . Hes mr. Trump is looks like 40 points ahead, at least in national surveys. I think one thing that will be interesting is to see whether any of them make any move in iowa or in new hampshire, because i think what really will matter is can either any of them get some momentum as we get to those primaries . Excuse me, because thats more important than the national numbers. But you know, what are they trying to accomplish . Are they if somebody is running for a second, then its hard to see how theyve really differentiated themselves. Theyve really gotten some traction. And are they running for Vice President . Are they running for mr. Trumps cabinet . Are they running for punditry spots on Different Networks . Its hard to tell, but it sure doesnt look like theyre running for president. Yeah because at this particular point , when you watch the debate last night and you see that nothing has really changed in the polls except for who did it, who did better last night than in the last debate. Right. Which coming out right now is perhaps nikki haley and policy. I mean, shes really the only one i heard last night addressed very specific topics, policy issues during that debate. Right. Right. She seemed to have done the best job of doing that because there was a lot of people talking over each other. It was i mean, it was chaotic. It was one of the more chaotic debates ive seen. Right. The moderators did not do a very good job of controlling the participants. One person who i thought actually did a really fine job is that moderator from univision. Yes, i thought she had excellent questions. She put things out there that arent necessarily part of the Republican Debate about where fentanyl actually comes from. Right in immigration questions, if anybody was a standout, in my mind, it was her. Yeah, it caught a lot of the candidates off guard. I mean, she posed questions that were not necessarily from the playbook. Right. From the party. And that is what was interesting about the questions that she asked. When you saw some of the questions asked by some of the other moderators, they were certainly posed in a way from. Right. How do i say it from the republican playbook, right. If you were right, if you were a regular viewer of these people running around, these are the understand them. Exactly. Those questions that you would get. Right. And sometimes they were even talking in shorthand. And most of them were talking about ccp. Never one of them never said the Chinese Communist party, that, you know, that sort of thing, because they just all talking in code. Whereas i thought that she really brought Something Different to the table. Exactly why you want to bring somebody who is outside that bubble right into participate. And i thought some of their answers to the participants answers were interesting. But in terms of getting traction on whats the big target here, which is can you be the main alternate to mr. Trump . Its hard to see that anybody has made any significant move watching that. All right. Whats important here is there are some big, big stories that were happening on the National Stage that are happening on the National Stage right now that were not asked in that debate last night. What was missing from the conversation in those debates . Well, any number of things, andre. I mean, one that immediately comes to mind is that in the last couple of days, mr. Trump basically threaten ed, the head of the joint chiefs of staff, mark milley, who is retiring after, what, 30 years of service for us all, basically threatened him with death quite literally. And hes had to get protection. By the way, he said he had to get protection as a result. Now, nobody was asked about that. Do you stand by, mr. Trump . You previously said that you would stand by him even if you were if he was convicted. Now, do you stand by that statement . That was that was certainly one that came to mind. And it seemed like if you wanted to stand out, these are the questions that you would want to go after as well. You differentiating yourself from from, um, from president trump, right . You would think thats the main game at this point in a primary is why you should be the standard bearer. And you and if youre not going to target the clear leader at this point, why are you there . What is the point . You know, go home and enjoy yourself. Theres also the issue of the Government Shutdown, the looming Government Shutdown this weekend that was not addressed in this debate at all, which i thought was complete. I was waiting for that to happen. So i could see how they handle it. What would they say . But i didnt see that. Sure. Not really. Not at all. That a that a if you were president , what would you do . How would you bring the party, all the players together for . What would you do about helping mr. Mccarthy bring his unruly coalition together . Nothing like that. To give some sense of what would you do with the inside baseball of being president , how you bring people together and how you use that pulpit to avoid disaster, which is by the end of the week, we might be there. Were going to have millions of people out of work. Were going to have shutdowns in the government. It is going to start to affect people all over the United States and not least of. All right here before you know it and nobody talked about i thought i found that one of the more glaring, glaring issues that id seen there today. What do you foresee happening next year . I mean, is this a point where we start seeing people fade away that are not close to the front of the pack, so to speak . I think so. I mean, there was a little bit of winnowing this time. There were certain rules you had to hit certain criteria to get to this debate. The same thing will happen with the next one. What the i mean, one of the key things is sort of behind the scenes, which is will big donors decide its time to turn off the spigot as to some of these people and maybe focus on one of the other candidates. So will that be a problem . And that we dont exactly see until somebody says weve reached the end of the road and im going to live to fight another day, i assume were going to see that winnowing, whether we will get that in time for somebody to be a major challenger to mr. Trump standing there alone, i dont know whether thats going to happen in time. Yeah. All right. Next debate, november 8th, in miami. Okay. So well see who shows up and who qualifies. Thats right. For that debate. Thats right. About six weeks. Thats right. David levine, thank you so much. We appreciate it. You bet. All right. Well coming up on mornings on two, the nine, a large strike for the United Auto Workers union. That looms a bigger one, in fact, a timeline of how soon it could escalate its strike on detroits big three automakers. Also ahead, potential crisis for child care is billions of dollars in funding could run dry as early as this weekend. Well talk with an expert about the impact it will have on families. And working p subways now slicing their deli meats fresh. Thats why theyre proferred ,by this pro who won the superbowl twice. And this pro with the perfect slice. And if we profer it, we know america will too. What about spaniards . And i guess spain. Gm and stellantis plants. As talks with ford have progressed and the union says its trying to stay flexible and will shift its protest. Depend on negotiations. The negotiations are set to resume early next week. And the other big hollywood strike, Screen Actors Guild and movie and tv producers will return to the bargaining table on monday. The actors have been striking since july 14th. This announcement comes one day after the Writers Guild of america settled its strike. The feeling out there that theres a lot of momentum right now and theres a real need and desire by both sides to get a deal done. So if were optimistic, then we could see a deal by, say , midoctober, perhaps, and then cameras could start rolling again soon after that with the screenwriters back on the job. Major network, late night shows say theyll return to production as soon as next week. Happening today, Governor Newsom is expected to sign a bill into law to raise salaries for fast food workers. Coming up on mornings on two, the nine on how theyre trying to tie President Biden to his sons foreign business dealings. Also ahead, republicans are still at odds with how to fund the government. It looks like its going to be sunny and maybe a little warmer. And there are some clouds, but its not going to be another nice day. The weather will change over the weekend and well always talk about that. And you can always go to our website to get the latest weather. Lets talk about this now. A new survey Shows Americans love whipping out their phones and snapping pictures to capture the moment. A poll for the redwood city based photo sharing platform mixbook reports the average person takes a photo six times each day. Most feature friends, family selfies or, of course, their pets. Got to throw in food to special events include graduations, weddings, vacations, sporting events. The average is nearly two dozen photos per event. Respondents in the survey say theyll go back and look at the pictures about once a month to relive that moment. Can i tell you that ive always been a photographer. Now it is so easy, right . So you know how i dont know im old enough to remember when people told you to write a journal about your life . Yeah, i do. That right. Right. So. But your photos can be your journal. You can go back. I can go back to when my daughter was born and see her, you know, because i had my phone, right . Yeah well, its magic. Yeah, its magic. You know what i do . This is horribly embarrassing, but ill share it with you. I keep all my text messages. I dont have that thing that deletes your old text messages. My phone store is, like, maxed out, so i love to scrolling back. And you can see you read them all. I read them all. Even the bad ones even. Well, but like, to me, the written word that we could talk about this all day, the written word versus a photograph, each has its value. But i just love being able to. I guess its just going back in time. Just like youre doing with photos. I do that with conversation, you know . Gasia. Look, i could go back to the pictures and write something about it. I could write a journal. Oh, i remember. This picture is going to spur memories. And so you guys ready for this . All right, so i told you earlier i was out of town. I went to a wedding out in Jackson Jackson hole, wyoming, and then it was some old friends of mine that worked with years ago. So we decided to go to yellowstone and grand teton. Okay. Okay. On instagram. Okay. We get back. We were. We were out. We were out all day from 9 00 to midnight. We get back and were like, all right, guys, how many pictures did you take . I had 327. What you had 300. She had another 300. And we were like, this is crazy. All in one day. Thats 327 photos just on my phone alone. Great yeah, thats right. Its awesome. Its. Yeah so anyway, so run out of storage, but thats another issue. And then we share. We. I found out you can share an album on the iphone with your friends, so youre just fine, the whole album. So now even ive been sharing albums. Okay, now thats embarrassing. Its embarrassing, right . Right right. Yeah. So now were sharing and trying to delete the extra photos that we have. And then just think, when we were all growing up, like we had our pictures taken at school, you know, on like, christmas s on our birthday, like you probably your parents probably didnt take 300 pictures of you in your first ten years of life that would have costed a lot of money back then. You had to go to kodak. Dont waste that and get the film and then you had to develop the film. Yeah and then if you go far back, you have to get the flash to the flash cubes. Yeah yeah, were good. Were good. Were dating ourselves back real far. Okay. All right. Lets focus on what could be coming here in the next few days. In less than 24, 72 hours. That is. There is a deadline to fund the government at this point, there is no plan in place to prevent a shutdown. Lucas tomlinson is in d. C. Now where both sides of the aisle are distraught. The Government Shutdown, i dont think, is inevitable in politics. President biden striking an optimal tone with a possible Government Shutdown just around the corner. The feds run out of money at the end of the day on saturday, and rather than coming together, the house and senate are drifting further apart. But House Speaker Kevin Mccarthy was hoping to win over skeptical conservatives by adding Border Security provisions to his short term spending bill. But even members who are pushing for border funding say mccarthy isnt telling the whole story. Thats a hollow promise, and a pipe dream, because when they go over to the senate, theyre going to be stripped out. Means while a senate bill funding the government for six weeks is still a nonstarter in the house because it contains funding for ukraine Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is urging republicans to come together, but also says, quote, i cant have an impact on what happens in the house. Now were in the middle of a process fight amongst our own. And i think a process fight doesnt really help us. And with the shutdown all but inevitable at this point, Government Employees are bracing for a payday without a paycheck, with as many as 4 million workers putting be impacted by the impasse. We are American Workers and we want to do our job. It could congress thats locking us out of our job. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy unveiling his short term spending bill on thursday while admitting he doesnt know if he has the votes to pass it in washington. Lucas tomlinson, ktvu fox two news now the National Parks and other tourist sites would be among those affected if there is a partial Government Shutdown, it will be up to the Biden Administration to determine the extent of the closures. Yosemite and other National Parks could be ordered to stay open, but there would be little to no staffing. Forcing Visitor Centers and restrooms to close. Alcatraz remained open during the 20 1819 shutdown under thenpresident trump, Ferry Service was limited and there were no behind the scenes tours or nighttime tours. Managers of the bay areas three major airports say they dont expect Serious Problems from a Government Shutdown. Sfo is under a Screening Partnership program in which security checkpoints are staffed by non federal workers. Both Oakland International and san jose minetta have tsa officers, but managers at each airport tell the chronicle they dont envision any major issues. Neither airport experienced any issues during the last shutdown, President Biden wrapped up his two day trip in the bay area. Many people spotted his motorcade during his last day in San Francisco. The president ended his trip with a meeting about science and technology and two fundraising events. The president s council of advisors on science and technology met with President Biden at the fairmont hotel. The 14 members presented policy recommendations on extreme weather, public health, workforce Patient Safety and research and development to uc berkeley researchers and a stanford researcher were part of that council. We had a very good conversation. Yeah, it was very exciting. I came out totally floating on air. The president has understands the air that it is the major transformation scientific transformation, right now. And he has had meetings to talk about the potential as well as the risks about i after that meeting, the president stopped at two separate fundraising events before heading to sfo. House republican launched the first formal impeachment hearing against President Biden, saying they intend to provide accountable clarity as they make their case to the public, their colleagues and skeptics in the senate. The hearing is expected to last six hours. Mike emanuel has more from washington. House republicans are using their first impeachment inquiry hearing to lay out evidence they think shows President Biden used his Public Office to benefit his family. He he lied by telling the American People that there was an absolute wall between his official government duties and his personal life. It is a culmination of investigative work the House Oversight committee has done for months. The chairman says he has two dozen pieces of evidence revealing joe bidens corruption in this includes emails, texts, messages, bank records and testimony of biden business associates. And they are zeroing in on the president s son, hunter, for his alleged influence peddling using the biden brand to enrich himself. One email hunter biden even bragged that he cut a deal for 10 million from Just One Company for, quote, introductions alone. Republicans have brought in financial and legal expert witnesses to examine any wrongdoing that may have been committed, but none of them have any firsthand knowledge of the biden familys financial dealings. I do not believe that the Current Evidence would support articles of impeachment. While hunter biden has a litany of legal problems, democrats argue there is no connection to the president himself. The constitution is irrelevant to them. What counts is what donald trump wants and the white house agrees. The timing of the hearing is suspect with a Government Shutdown looming, theyre desperate to distract from their inability to keep the government open. If enough of the house is convinced there is a smoking gun, the Judiciary Committee would take the lead. Drafting articles of impeachment in washington. Mike emanuel, ktvu fox two news tonight in oakland. The Oakland Police commission will hold a town hall meeting about the search for a new police chief and also to ask the public if former police chief Lauren Armstrong should be reinstated. The city has been looking for a new permanent chief since armstrong was fired last february. Administrators recently launched a fundraising drive with a goal of 1 million before the end of the year. There are three quarters of the way there and have a charity gala this saturday night emceed by our own cristina rendon. All most 25 million in Child Care Service funding across the country could run out as soon as this weekend. The boost in funding was an industry lifeline from the federal government in the early part of the pandemic. It helped millions of children in more than 200,000 centers nationwide. Tens of thousands of child care programs may have to close once the funds are gone because the cost to stay open is too expensive. Lets go deeper on this issue with kim johnson. We welcome back to the nine, the ceo of bananas child care referrals and resources. Thanks for being with us. Thank you for having me. When you hear words like crisis, as we have in the past few weeks, what do you think is going to happen . Well, i think that some of the supports that child care providers in all different settings, theyre going to experience some reduction in funding that will allow them that allow them to be stabilized during the pandemic. So do i expect them to call parents and say, dont come in today . No, but i do expect them to be back into the situation they were prior to during the pandemic and prior, which was working within a system thats totally underfunded. And it makes it really difficult to provide services kind of hanging by a thread, hanging by a thread. So parents arent going to get that call if you cant bring your child here, might they get the call of i know youve been paying x, but now i need you to pay x plus one. Thats a good example is the stabilization funds that were provided by arpa. One of the things that it did is it reduced the amount of money that parents had to pay. Even if a parent gets this Financial Assistance to go to child care, theres a copayment, they call them family fees. And for many families, its three and 400 per month. And so that was really very difficult for families. So during the pandemic, arpa funding, that was one of the things that it was they were waived. Family fees wereve those things are going to probably start popping up again so families could be on the hook for that 3 or 400. Yes. Okay okay. What do you think . I mean i mean, i feel like we know, but i will ask because youre an expert. What will this do to the average family . Wow. So you know, child care is very expensive live and its woefully underfunded by the federal government. And it was that case before the pandemic. It was that case before the pandemic. And for families that are able to access child care assistance, you know, that will probably stay in place. But there are many, many families that cant get child care assistance. We are only funding or able to support about 10 of the eligible families. So theres a 90 unmet need here in Alameda County, and thats probably the case across the country as well. Yeah so for a family whos watching this and feels like they need help, that theyre not getting, whats the first step in getting contact with bananas . Well, they can call us because we can talk to them about a what kind of child care they might need and then we can talk with them about the different subsidies that might be available to them. And they get enrolled. Its based on eligibility. So we have some families that have special needs. Maybe theyre unhoused foster care, maybe theyre cps involved. But then also its an income eligibility. So its based on need. Its not a waiting list, but its a eligibility list. So there are funds that are available. Funding child care is very complex. Its a braiding of both federal and state funds. And in some cases, like here in Alameda County, there are also some local, county and city funds involved in that as well. And is that work the family does . Is that work you do . Who does the braiding . The braiding is done at the state level and organizations like ours helped get that money out to the families that need the most. And for families who, like you and i, were lucky enough to have children who are out of these, you know, child care years, how do we support those families who are in the middle of it . And its going to be socially, emotionally, financially, and what can we do . Yeah, i think one thing is the awareness that early care and education is so vitally important. People think that, oh, before kindergarten, its, you know, you dont really need to do that. 95 of the Brain Development happens from from birth to five years old. So we really need as a nation to really embrace the importance of early care and education. So therell be opportunities, whether its legislation that may come up or when build back better, when the Biden Administration introduced that its a support that to tell your lawmakers that this is really really important because if we dont take care of our youngest learners, were going to pay for that in the end. Right so its really important that we embrace early care and education and recognize how important it is. I remember i talked with my sons Kindergarten Teacher and she said 100, i can tell whos been to childcare, whos been to a preschool and who has been at home for the first five years. So its, you know, you learn a lot of skills. I mean, maybe its not math and science, but you do learn, you know, how to use the bathroom by yourself, how to sit on the rug and read a book quietly by yourself. How to, you know, have have an adult direct their attention to you for 20 minutes at a time. Theres Foundational Learning happening. The Foundational Learning, its the Building Blocks, whether its social, emotional, how to get along with your peers and each other. You talked about we dont learn about math, but we do talk about counting and numeracy. Why is the Building Blocks so that when you do start doing formal math, you have the Building Blocks to do that. So its totally important and whether thats in a formal chair care setting or you have a you have some kind of preschool experiences, whether thats in playgroups that are organized or in a child care center, theyre just really important. You are speaking to my heart. I feel like i was there a minute ago, though. Its been a few years now. Thank you so much. Kim johnson for bananas, childcare, referrals and resources. I appreciate your your your help and your enthusiasm for this subject. Well, thank you for having me. Of course. Of course. A recent study says the swiss glaciers are melting at a rapid pace. Researchers found that thousands of glaciers in switzerland have lost more than half of their total volume since the 1930 and have lost 10 of their ice volume in just the last two years alone. Experts credit the dramatic acceleration of glaciers retreat to extreme summer heat and low winter snow volumes. They say the ice melt is a real warning on the impact of Climate Change. They make it very clear what is happening out there because they respond in a very sensitive way to warming temperatures. And therefore, we should use the glaciers as an image that really illustrates how dramatic Climate Change is impacting and changing our High Mountain areas.
