For issues about the family. We have to get back to Behavioral Health and mental health. Our laws are being broken every day at the southern border, every day. And joe biden and his crew is doing nothing about enforcing that law. People in washington are shutting down the American Dream with their reckless behavior. They borrowed, they printed, they spent, and now youre paying more for everything. We have to start prosecuting according to the law. We have to make sure we have the backs of Law Enforcement and we have to make sure that were a country of law and order. Eepih inflation. Auto workers and all American Workers are feeling it and families are struggling in this economy. Put people back to work. We are using taxpayer money to pay people more to stay at home than to go to work. That is wrong. Every county in america is now a border county because fentanyl has devastated americans in every single state. Seven republicans battled for airtime and a piece of second place in the polls. Good evening. Im julie julie haener. And im mike mibach. The leading candidate again opting not to participate. Our political reporter greg lee here in studio with more on tonights big debate greg. Yeah, mike, julie, good evening. Time is running out for these candidates to catch up to former President Trump in the polls where less than four months from the iowa caucus is. And you could almost feel the frenetic urgency to stand out tonight. Seven republican president ial hopefuls took the debate stage in Southern California at the Ronald Reagan president ial library. At the second debate, the economy again front and center as candidates targeted President Bidens policies and his visit to striking autoworkers. Joe biden doesnt belong on a picket line. He belongs on the unemployment line. Bidenomics has failed wages are not keeping up with inflation. Biden showed up on that picket line. But why are those workers actually there . Its because of all of the spending that he has pushed through in the economy. Thats raised the inflation. The reason why people are striking in detroit is because joe bidens interference with Capital Markets and with free markets for the second time, former President Trump, whos leading the polls by more than 40 points, skipped the debate. Some of the candidates, including second in the polls, ron desantis wasted no time in slamming him. Donald trump is missing in action. He should be on this stage tonight. He owes it to you to defend his record. Youre not here tonight. Not because of polls and not because of your indictments. Youre not here tonight because youre afraid of being on this stage and defending your record. Trump again, put on some counterprogramming speaking to autoworkers in michigan yesterday, joe biden came to michigan to pose for photos at the picket line. But its his policies that send michigan autoworkers to the unemployment line. The candidates fielded questions on immigration and crime schools, the pending Government Shutdown and more. After serving as chief instigator last debate, Vivek Ramaswamy tried to change his tune seeking party unity. I think this Artificial Division is unhelpful in our party. The real divide is not between the republicans on this stage and in the reagan library. I want to say these are good people on this stage. The good feelings did not last long as others clashed with him over his foreign policy, including ukraine and china. Heres excuse me, excuse by degrading the russian military, we actually keep our homeland safer. We keep our troops at home. And we all understand article five of nato we have when in fact with the American People dangerous social social media apps that we could have. And what youve got. I honestly every time i hear you, i feel a little bit dumber. One thing all the gop rivals did agree on steering clear of a Survival Style question of who should drop out . Which one of you on stage tonight should be voted off the island . Were here like, you know, were happy to debate, but i think that thats disrespectful to my fellow competitors. With time running out this crowded field, trying to find a way to chip into trumps lead, this guy has not only divided our party, hes divided families all over this country. The polls dont elect president s. Voters elect president s. And were going to take the case now after the debate. A Senior Adviser to mr. Trump posted on social media calling the debate boring and inconsequential and also saying the rnc should put an end to any further primary debates so everyone can focus on President Biden in studio. Greg lee, ktvu fox two news. All right, greg, thank you for that. Governor newsom gave the democratic response to the debate. He told sean hannity on fox tonight that he thought President Biden was the real winner of the debatectr tonight, no doubt objectively. Yeah. No, no, joe biden. Thats not spin. These guys identified problems. And biden actually is not only identified solutions, hes gotten bypasses than deals to begin the process of implementing those. Governor newsom and Florida Governor ron desantis are set to debate in georgia on november 30th. Sean hannity will be moderating ktvu political analyst brian sobel joins us now. So, brian, do you think there was one clear winner . Anyone that rose above the rest on stage tonight and stood out to voters . I dont think anybody was that person, but i think there were a couple of people that that were sort of candidate 2. 0. You saw a difference in ron desantis tonight. Different, different demeanor, same with ramaswami tim scott was more aggressive tonight. A couple of the people on stage need to move on. You know, this debate was held. You at the reagan president ial library. And i think there may be viewers at home who wanted a reagan like moment, a big moment to separate themselves from the leader in the polls. Who was donald trump . Maybe they didnt get that tonight. And if they didnt, does that mean donald trump by not being on that stage, does he win tonight . Well, thats that was the discussion in in other quarters was who was the real winner tonight. And the winner might have been donald trump because he didnt have to come here to this debate and take the slings and arrows. It would have been about donald trump. You saw what Chris Christie wanted to talk about tonight. Chris christie will not emerge as the as the nominee, but he is acting as kind of the stalking horse with with donald trump. And so if they are on the same stage, its going to be a knockdown battle between those two. Suck the air out of the room. Okay. So what we did see is a lot of squabbling and a lot of interruptions, a lot of crosstalk, like donald trump with the commanding lead going into tonight. Did any one of those on stage tonight do enough to change the polls to move the needle at all . I think because they debated it, theyll see their poll numbers go up. Donald trumps will go down just slightly. And what will be interesting to watch is which one of these people on the stage tonight sees a bump. You know, consistently now through two debates. Nikki haley is impressed. She is a policy wonk. Shes fair. She can battle. She went toe to toe with tim scott tonight. Bring it on. You know that that is somebody to watch. I think, you know, julie mentioned the poll. I know there was a new nbc poll out this week that showed you know, President Biden and trump basic tied in a hypothetical general election matchup. Let me ask you about biden. What does he need to do . We saw him in michigan. He was here in the bay area. Now hes in arizona campaigning there. What does he need to do to try to get separation from donald trump . Well, first of all, i think he hes going to find that the next few months are very difficult for him. Whether he emerges as the as the final candidate or not, you know, time will tell. But as he continues to have these moments, more and more people in the polling is showing us this. More and more people are worried about him as the nominee. Youre hea you . Absolutely yeah. The democratsb. Really is that hes got some cognitive issues and things are not where youd want it to be if you were a democrat. What now happens over the next few months is going to be interesting. You know, i talked with a lot of people around the country and theres this idea, well, maybe something will happen at the convention in, you know, where he doesnt win on the first ballot. And you know, and then somebody else emerges who knows . But its going to be interesting to see what goes on over the next few months. I also dont think people think Kamala Harris is the heir apparent really quickly, before we let you go, what about the democratic response . How did Governor Newsom do tonight . Well, Governor Newsom has been everywhere over the last few days. Maybe that says something. It does. And hes debating. Ron sanchez coming up. That is the thing. And so hes the hes the face of the Democratic Party right now, which cannot be playing well with Kamala Harris. All right, brian, its always good to have you. Thanks so much for your perspective. Absolutely. Absolutely all right. Thanks, brian. Well, we spoke with some bay area Republican Voters who gathered for a watch par i city of San Francisco. The absence of former President Trump also was on their minds. My favorite in this race is President Trump, and i respect his decision to stay out. I think that this is a riff raff. This is a rumble. This is a battle for whos going to be Vice President , in my opinion. Im really sorry that trump didnt show up. I think this is going to hurt him. But, you know, he needs to get into if he wants to be the nominee. I thought Chris Christie made some important points about donald trump to say, you know what, if youre not showing up for the debate, if youre not engaging with the audience, with the Republican Voters, youre going to lose support. The third Republican Debate will be held november eighth in miami. Candidates will have to reach 4 in the polls and 70,000 individual donors to take part in that debate. Also coming up tonight at 1030, it was day two for President Biden here in the bay area. His meeting with science and tech advisors, plus his announcement regarding artificial intelligence. Not going back. And 20 year old kevin gulley is a convicted car thief and had a probation revoked earlier this year after being arrested for evading and another car theft. Gulley had to be taken to the ground in this latest arrest. For decades, uc Berkeley Students have been targeted by robbers, many from out of town. To be honest, like im not like that surprised that theres like robberies happening and stuff like, i feel like we hear stories like all the time. I mean, i dont know. Me personally, ive never had ive never experienced anything like that. Police also recovered several guns after the chase. The Alameda County da will review these cases before deciding whether to file formal charges. Henry lee ktvu fox two news after the break. A summer full of concerts in the city of santa clara. Two former nasa employees who worked at Moffett Field for decades are now suing the agency, citing wrongful termination. Cameron gazaway and robert wilson, both longtime battalion chiefs of the nasa ames fire department, say they were fired last september after 28 years with the agency. The two claimed nasa suddenly ordered them to get an associate degree in fire science within 45 days. Now, despite years of experience, training and certification, both workers say they were denied extensions, even though nasa knew about these new requirements long before they were notified a year in advance. And in this entire time, knowing what the new changes are, they didnt bother to tell us. This is the first time they only gave them 45 days and they were the only two individuals that were given that short window there. Oakland based attorney there also says is their attempt to unionize and their age played a role in their termination. Both workers say they always passed their physical tests, but that nasa evaluators did make comments. But it was always, you know, oh, you guys dont drop dead on us, you know, youre going to be okay looking kind of old, you know, things like that. A lot of offhanded comments, despite my age, i was dedicated to doing the very best job that i could possibly do. The 14 members present policy recommends actions on extreme weather. Public health, workforce, Patient Safety and research and development. The reason we are doing all of this work on ai is because we want to use it to do big things. President biden announced that he plans to take action this fall to move the us forward as an ai leader, and im going to take executive action and my administration is going to continue to work with bipartisan legislation. So america leads the way toward responsible ai innovation. We had a very good conversation. Yeah it was very exciting. I came out totally floating on air. And as the president heads to arizona, there are growing calls in that state for him to address the humanitarian crisis at the southern border. This comes as large numbers of migrants continue to arrive seeking asylum. Some arizona leaders say the president should visit the border to better understand the issues. The yuma area has seen some of the highest numbers of illegal crossings over the past two and a half years. Its highly disappointing that the president gets this close to the border and continues to pretty much ignore the situation. I just want the president plans to spend most of his time in the phenix area tomorrow. Hes expected to deliver an address that will pay tribute to the late arizona senator john mccain. Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer is calling on the house to pass a bipartisan bill to avoid a Government Shutdown. The senate did vote today to advance a continuing resolution that would fund the government until november 17th. The house is expected to vote on its own bill on friday, one day before their deadline. It would cut spending by 8 and toughen up border security. The senate bill adds billions in aid for ukraine, which some republicans oppose. This is not an impossible puzzle to solve. The solution remains clear. Speaker mccarthy needs to stop letting the maga radicals drive his decision and do the obvious and sensible thing. And democrats say that if the house does not pass the bipartisan bill, it could cause, quote, chaos at airports. Tsa agents and air Traffic Controllers are considered essential workers, but wont get paid, which could lead to sickouts like we saw back in 2018. Also, national parks, including yosemite, could potentially be shut down. A Pediatric Care Center in the east bay is expanding the number of children it can care for. And she loves walking the same grounds she did with lars. The hummingbirds really captured his eyes, his eyes, his attention. And it was a beautiful fall night outside across the bay area as we give you that live look in downtown San Francisco, chief meteorologist bill martin is back with the forecast. In your neighborhood every day, businesses everywhere are asking is it possible . With comcast business. It is. Is it possible to help keep our Online Platform safe from cyberthreats . Absolutely. Can we provide health care virtually anywhere . We can help with that. Is it possible to use predictive monitoring to address operations issues . We can help with that, too. With the advanced connectivity and intelligence of global secure networking from comcast business. Its not just possible. Its happening. Thats increasing tonight. Ktvu brooks jarocz is Digging Deeper to see if its a Cost Effective solution or just giving us a false sense of security. You may not see them, but theyre capturing every car thats rolling in and out of piedmont. Theres 39in the city. Police chief Jeremy Bowers says automated license plate readers are scanning and photographing stolen cars every single day. Immediately sending alerts to the citys dispatch center. Theyll confirm that its still a wanted vehicle. Confirm that the image is accurate and then give that information to the officers again who will then respond in five, six high alert, southbound grand from rose silver scion. Officers can move in in minutes in hopes of recovering the car and making an arrest. We know that sometimes were looking for that needle in the haystack. So thats exactly what the alpr technology is there to do to be a force multiplier, to help us identify those needle in the haystack and deal with them. Since 2014, piedmont says the technology has led to 248 arrests, about 27 people a year. But crime is going up. So are the vehicle thefts and scans triggering an incident. But arrests attributed to license plate readers have remained steady. They are not a panacea. They are a tool. That tool is being embraced by the bay areas biggest cities. Plans to put more up, but do they work, especially in places with high crime and departments that are understaffed or strapped for resources . Overall, the effectiveness is still in question. Public policy analyst Jonathan Hofer with the independent institute isnt convinced, pointing to a lack of leads from the cameras to solve cases. Theres not great Scientific Evidence that they are successful in increase arrests, deterring vehicle theft. A 2010 study by George Mason University found license plate readers increased the likelihood of finding stolen cars, but not arrests. And charging suspects only happens in areas with a high concentration of cameras, each one costing thousands of dollars. You have to factor in installation costs, maintenance costs. This stuffs not cheap. And so we have to ask ourselves , do we want to divest our Police Resources into tools that may or may not help just months ago, Oakland Police shut off its license plate readers on dozens of cruisers and acknowledged last year they got no investigative leads from them, but recovered 34 cars as research suggests, fixed cameras may be better for tracking vehicles. Oakland has now secured 1. 2 million in state funding, so that we can get 300 cameras citywide. And this is the same camera system that piedmont is using. But piedmont is a city of 11,000 and hasnt seen a homicide since 1999. Ktvu surveyed several other cities to see if the license plate readers work or dont work. Vallejo says in two years, it has recovered 113 cars and made 116 arrests. San leandro is convinced plate readers work despite lacking data. They still need to be installed. Berkeley to spending hundreds of thousands to get cameras up and running. We have to be willing to try something different. We have to be willing to give technology a chance. Oakland city councilman Kevin Jenkins made a public pitch for the automated readers. With robberies spiking and carjacking skyrocketing, i have evidence that whats going on right now does not work. Oakland Police Data Shows close to 11,000 vehicles stolen just this year. Thats an average of 40 cars a day. A 15 year high. Jenkins says hell work on legislation to address privacy concerns while also pushing to get the department fully staffed. We have to be able to do walk and chew gum at the same time. We have to boost our technology and we also have to recruit, hoping more eyes coupled with more officers can curb crime and overcome some any odds. Brooks jarocz rouz ktvu fox two news. All righty. Lets take a look at the long range model that will take us through the next seven days. And i just want you to watch the positioning of that trough and the potential all for a few sprinkles or showers in here on saturday. So theres the trough if i know you see it, the red area is dipping down. Here we go into thursday, the trough lingers. So the weather will continue very similar because of that. But then look what happens on friday morning, friday afternoon, the clouds increase. Thats a big cool down for us as a trough sinks in over the top of us and then as you get into saturday, you see the blues and the yellows down in here. So thats potential for some scattered showers as we head into saturday morning into the mountains saturday afternoon, snow above 7000ft around lake tahoe. And then watch this as we go into late next week. See that big dome of High Pressure going this way, that big thing, that big High Pressure. We havent seen one of those in a while. And so thats going to increase the temperature. So tomorrow, like today, big cool down on friday. And then we go into a potentially warm phase and maybe breezy phase as we go into tuesday and wednesday of next week. These are the highs from today. And there you got them. Nice day. Its been pretty much very, very similar to yesterday, maybe a degree warmer and then a couple of degrees warmer in fairfield for sure. Three degrees warmer, but temperatures tomorrow will be about the same , maybe a little cooler in fairfield, but same idea, mid 80s. Some upper 80s, lots of 70s and low 80s. So theres a current thats not a model or anything. Thats just the jet stream. Theres the trough. Right. And thats been responsible for all the weather that weve been seeing, almost the entirety of this summer has been set up with this this pattern. So there is the rain in the pacific northwest. The rain has stopped in northern california. As you know, the temperatures right now are about where they were last night. The winds have calmed down. We had gusts up to 30, 35 miles an hour up in the delta. It was breezy at Oakland Airport over 30 miles an hour. Sfo had over 30 mile an hour winds northwesterly winds, not atypical for this time of year, 26 miles an hour at sfo show tomorrow, like today. Fog is not a thing right now. Fog was there this evening. Now its not the model says no fog tomorrow i think therell be a little patchy fog but not much. And then you get temperatures like today that temperature footprint and thats the last one. After that, when we get into friday, saturday and sunday, the yellows are going to dominate the 70s. Are going to dominate this map. So forecast highs tomorrow. Another good one just like today, 84 in antioch, 77 in fremont. Air quality is money. Fire dangers are manageable, as evidenced by the fact we havent done any fire stories. This evening. And then theres that chance of showers. So when i showed you that long range model, this is kind of it, right . The ridge sticks around one more day and then the trough drops in and brings us to a scattered shower. Sunday, breezy monday and tuesday and wednesday. I think its going to warm up pretty significantly. Well see how that goes. Thats down the road. Ill see you back at 11. All right. Well see you then. Bill thank you. A landmark San Francisco restaurant is opening its doors for a block party next week. Johns grill has been serving customers on ellis street Near Union Square for 115 years now. Hes making just his fifth career start. The 49 ers. They plan to take on the cardinals ground game away and make him one dimensional is beneficial for the big guys up front to be able to pin their ears back and get busy in the in the pass game, you know, to cause pressure and hopefully create some takeaways for the defense and make it hard on the quarterback. Thats ideal, but its easier said than done. You know, you still got to stop the run against a really great run run team.
