Im just surprised that this happened, especially to my school. I didnt think this would happen. They might need to start looking into metal detectors for at least all two oakland schools. But this one definitely because the things keep happening. Oakland School District spokesman jon sasaki had this message. Stop engaging in violence in all its forms. Whatever the conflict that you might have, whether its in the city or anywhere else, its not worth the consequences. Is if skyline involving two students back in december and parents tell me these incidents are proof that more needs to be done. Now, the School District in oakland says they will be reviewing security measures. But one last note. There are no metal detectors at any of the citys schools. Henry lee, ktvu , fox two news and henry, just to clarify, do we know if these shots that were fired were from students or from people that just got close to campus . Yeah. United Airlines Operations are back to normal tonight following a mid day nationwide ground stoppage because of an equipment failure. This is a live look out at San Francisco international, one of the hubs for united. And that is where we find ktvu tom vacar with more on the story. Tom well, take a look. You can see that things are pretty much back to normal here right now. But earlier it was quite a different thing and whether it was a single computer keystroke or a confused Scheduling Program or a microchip that melted down, united a giant Legacy Airline called it quits for a short while at about 1038 tuesday morning, United Airlines conducted a system wide nationwide ground stop of its planes. The issue revolved around a malfunction learning Computer System that degraded the ability of departing aircraft to communicate with United Airlines dispatchers. The ability of dispatchers to communicate with aircraft at the gate, getting ready to depart or on the tarmac is critical to Exchange Information necessary to keep the entire system moving system wide at San Francisco airport alone, that caused one cancellation and 51 delays. 300 united delays nationwide. And though the ground stop lasted less than a half hour, it caused a lot of confusion in just a flash. It just came across the news that united had to shut down because they had a glitch on all their flights. And so they they they said that they were grounding all flights. But then it appears that theyve lifted that now. It hasnt affected us yet. But you youre concerned about it. Yeah, of course, because weve got five more flights to go while were in america after the Southwest Airlines december multi day meltdown that canceled almost 17,000 flights over Overall Airline performance has been challenging to airlines and passengers as the demand for more flights grow ever increasing extreme weather, a lack of pilots and other personnel as well as a lack of air Traffic Control is spells trouble in the future for passengers time and their pocketbooks. When things like this happen, its like what do you do . What can we do about this . Who do we call . Who do we talk to . In fact, to former faa administrators told forbes that cancellations and delays could become the new normal in the industry, even though uncle sam ponied up more than 62 billion to keep them afloat during the pandemic. My concern would more be just the amount of cost thats involved with it and having enough planes and everybody ready to go. Basically to take everyone, everywhere, especially with the holidays coming up, things happen. But you got to we got to get better and we got to get better, not go backwards. We got to get better, better and move forward. And consider this the ultra busy thanksgiving travel week is just ten weeks away, followed immediately thereafter by the christmas holiday. Heavy duty traffic season. A lot of work to do. Tom baker, ktvu fox two news. I mean, tom, you mentioned the holidays. Is there really still a concern here about the faa and the staffing shortages in those air Traffic Control centers as we approach thanksgiving and beyond . Some Airlines Even talked about cutting their schedules so that they would make sure they had enough people to fly the airplanes that they do have now. The problem is, if they oversell those flights, then theres going to be a real problem. The whole system just has been slow in responding to the whole pandemic thing. And a lot of it was they didnt really do what they were supposed to do with the money. And as a result, were paying for it now because we want to travel again. We were cooped up for a couple of years and they have a lot of work to do and whether or not theyre going to make it to the holidays is anybodys guess. And like you said, theyre on the clock ten weeks away from thanksgiving and tom vacar live tonight at sfo. Tom thank you. Families who have lost loved ones to fentanyl poisoning are speaking out in sacramento. Community members and lawmakers spoke in favor of alexandras law today, which was blocked by the senate and Assembly Public safety committees back in april. The measure would require judges to warn fentanyl dealers that they could be charged with murder if they dealt drugs that resulted in someones death. Perla mendez is a fentanyl awareness advocate who lost her son to the drug. She believes alexandras law could help fight the fentanyl crisis. This is unacceptable. We have an opportunity to prevent further crimes deaths and provide those with a chance to change their behavior and pursue a different path. And those who continue to profit from the suffering and death of others must be held accountable. Dont wait for this tragedy to befall on your family or child. Act now. Republicans in the state assembly attempted to flex legislative rules today to allow lawmakers to vote on alexandras law. The measure failed on a vote of 42 to 18. The event may be over, but the images, the money mess endured by many, leaving a big stain in nevadas black rock desert. Tens of thousands of people were stranded over the weekend due to the flash flooding and the line to leave today. Hours long, as you can see there on your screen , burning man 2023. Its officially over, but the journey home for thousands of attendees is ongoing. Tonight, ktvu jesse gary has the story. Tuesday, a procession of vehicles moves slowly across the northern nevada desert. This after a fickle Mother Nature let the lights shine. Turning what had been trenches of mud into dry, dusty roads. On the road were driving on, its super dry and fine. Theres like just a little bit alongside us, but no bees driving on that part. So the mud has kind of eased, you know, hardened up a little bit. Yeah its hardened up over the weekend, an unusual downpour created a muddy mess that had many burning man attendees stuck in place and others struggling to drive out. There are multiple moments where were like, were not getting out of here. And honestly, the most terrifying passenger ride ive ever been a part of. Autumn zhu says she and her boyfriend decided to leave over the weekend. The Tipping Point for them learning portable toilets had been closed after some began overflowing. She blames the organizers for not doing more to ensure an orderly exit as conditions worsened. We got stuck multiple times and my partner was raking at the mud and digging us out with his bare hands. We should have evacuated people by priority. Similar to a Natural Disaster or hurricane. If based on, you know, who had disabilities, who had children who were old, who had disabilities, who had threatening life or medical conditions. Not everyone suffered the same fate. Some attendees say there were adequate notification options. We knew that we would get out. Um, and then after that, it was just a matter of keeping our spirits up and, um, using what we had to stay warm and stay dry and stay fed and watered. Officials with the burning man project havent commented on allegations that they may have dropped the ball. A statement tuesday says in part, the playa is drivable in some places, but does have some mud soft spots and standing water in others. Bmp is requesting people stay on the beaten path, follow all traffic laws and please be patient with your fellow drivers, pedestrians and emergency services. Even though the roads are mostly dry now, making that trip is measured in hours and much longer than would normally be the case when leaving a burning man. Earlier this year, the Alameda Police chief announced he would offer the signing bonuses on top of a starting salary of 110,000 a year in an attempt to fill 24 open positions. Now, other cities like San Francisco and el cerrito are also offering signing bonuses. Some critics, however, say bonuses such as these widen the divide between the cities that can afford them and those that cant. After a little bit of unsettled weather during the holiday weekend, wow, what a nice one out there today. Low clouds along the coast, a mostly sunny around the bay. Clouds are beginning to return already over areas of San Francisco as we take a beautiful view there and inside the bay. Do expect tonight into tomorrow morning. Meanwhile, our temperatures at this hour, a little bit warmer compared to yesterday, up by a few degrees. Petaluma, novato, hayward and livermore all reporting four degrees warmer. Everybody else very similar to slightly above where we were yesterday. At this time. Low 60s at areas along the coast near half moon bay, upper 80s for our inland cities. So while its a very warm day for the inner east bay, sometimes during this time of year we see a 40 degree spread on those temperatures. When our inland cities are close to 100 degrees, not going on today, nor in the near future. 78 degrees right now at rohnert park. As we shift to the peninsula, we have 77 in redwood city, 81 over areas of stanford and for the inner east bay, some of our warmer numbers for today. Clayton coming in at 86, 87 reported in brentwood. The winds are a little bit up over the afternoon today. We typically see the winds pick up just a bit and thats what were looking at right now. Bay area agencies kicking off transit month at San Franciscos civic center today as ktvu james torres reports, bart is planning a number of changes to begin as soon as next week. Transit month has been an idea in the area well before the covid 19 pandemic. But now post pandemic, it seems the message is more necessary than ever. Public transit ridership levels today are still only a fraction of what we saw in 2019. So any promotion to get people on board is helpful. Its not about just commuting into the office. Right. Transit is there for you on the weekends and at night to go to plays to go on a hike. Riders on bart are well aware of the Financial Hardship directly tied to the low ridership. They appreciate the efforts in place to keep Public Transit going alive and well. Its been essential. Like i ride it every day. Its like my main transportation. Yeah. And between the bus and the bart, the bart are very a very nice ride. Transit month is an idea going into its eighth year. It uses fun events throughout the month of september to ask riders to give agency like bart, muni or ac transit a chance to show why riding their services are worth it. Bart, for example, is doing that with changes starting next week where it will retire its old legacy trains and exclusively run its new higher tech fleet of the future trains the new trains are a much enhanced service. Theres so much they looked at as much more cleaner, much easier to use. The new trains are a win win with increased services on peak weekend commutes, fewer train cars, which allow for easier Police Patrol and no longer having to worry about the maintenance of the old fleet. Bart can now save up to 12 million for people who dont ride Public Transit as often. They say they, too appreciate the effort. Well, theyre trying so well give it a try. We just dont use it very often. But we have used it to go to the ballgames. So well probably give it a try as part of transit month, local leaders are hosting ride alongs today. Throughout the month. Agencies will host hikes, events and a competition offering prizes to the rider with the most train rides within the month. We have to show people were not just about using us to go to work. The east Bay Regional Parks district has not said if the popular pole will be repaired for hikers and visitors expressed their frustration over the crime. But now our brooks jarocz tells us how its renewing controversy between the neighborhood and the park. Mission peak visitors say its always a packed parking lot here off stanford avenue. But new questions are being raised over connections between the busyness of the park and the recent vandalism of the iconic sculpture at the summit. Deplorable, despicable, reprehensible. The Mission Peeker sculpture is only a fraction of what it used to be. Prevent ing the picture. Perfect memories made for more than 30 years. I feel like its very much a part of our lives in the community and so to not put it back would be like. Like, you know, like losing an old friend. The east Bay Regional Parks district has recovered the toppled top, but it hasnt decided if its repairing that popular pole. Hikers suspect the hesitation may lie with a long standing Public Parking problem on the weekends. It is completely swarming with people. Neighbors have complained, concerned about safety. Some have previously sued over excessive cars and visitors filling the streets. They consistently vote to restrict access to this park at this entrance. William jauregui is with the mission peak conservancy. He says for years, there has been a battle to keep people from coming. Understand theres a lot of animosity in this neighborhood towards park visitors hours are now limited, parking a premium, permits required on weekends, even for numerous neighbors. Other wise expect the trouble of a ticket. Its just extra stress that we dont need. Joyce lee lives nearby and says since the pandemic, the pole has attracted many more people, which she says could explain why vandals cut it down. It really hurt a lot of people and i hope they realize that still there is worry over crime and conduct and congestion surrounding the park. I just want to have my cake and eat it, too. Like i want people to enjoy the outdoors, but also to be mindful of the residents. For those who seek the trail to the top, they say mission peak should be open to all and its iconic pole put back up the Park District needs to know that the public wants this cultural artifact, this monument restored to its former prime in fremont, brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news. Its prudent for us to assume that he is going to be there and prepare in that vein, as opposed to be surprised. We were in a similar circumstance with a dynamic russia a couple of years ago in tj. We got a deal done at the 11th hour. He showed up in the stadium and he was, t. J. Watt that day. And so thats what those guys do. They show up and they are who they are. And so we expect him to be there. Tj that tomlin is referring to is t. J. Watt, whose situation was eerily similar to bosas in 2021. Watt was in his fifth season, just like bosa. He was holding out to become the highest paid defensive player in the league, and after missing all of camp, what ended up signing a 112 million deal with the steelers the day before their Season Opener and the next day on sunday, he went out and he played against the bills. As you can see, he had two sacks, five quarterback hits, a forced fumble. You know, bosa is a workout machine. He keeps himself in great shape. If he signs before sunday, i am guessing that theres a good chance that he suits up and plays even if he is on a pitch count and how important is bosa to the 49 ers since 2019 . In their 37 and 14 in when he plays and just five and ten when he doesnt julie you know i like stats so i had to i had to throw out a stat there at the end but it ive got the phone ready. If anything breaks while were on the air, ill jump on and well talk about it. It could happen any moment or it could last into the season. We just dont know. Yeah, lets hope it gets done. Thats the defensive side of the ball. Jason let me ask you something about the offense, though. George kittle word is that he may be banged up himself here and that he may not play later this week. You know, injuries are a part of it. We saw travis kelce, another tight end, hurt his knee today. Hyper extended. He may not play thursday night. As for kittle, hes dealing with a sore groin. So he was working out off to the side with the 49 ers yesterday, their first real big practice, though, is tomorrow. So well have to see. I mean, hes hes a veteran player, so he could play on sunday, even without a lot of work this week. Theyre going to install game plans wednesday and thursday. But tomorrow and thursday will be the big indicator if hes back out on the field. All right. I know a lot of fans want to see those two guys back out on the field. Our stat guy, jason, thank you. Absolutely. Well, qr codes at a beach in oceanside. Oceanside are being posted to help keep visitors informed on Current Conditions and safety alerts. Information lifeguards report from a watchtower now being sent to a website for the public to know what lifeguards are experiencing. And it will also tell you about water levels, water temps.
