Two of our officers were ambushed while responding to a call of a family disturbance by a coward and a convicted felon with a gun that he should never have had. Now, as you mentioned, this suspect was barricaded inside of his home for about four hours. And the reporter, henry lee, that we had on the scene earlier says that he heard a loud boom and saw some smoke. So we believe that maybe they forced him out of the home, but he is in custody at and again, Police Officers were at the hospital with this injured police officer. She is in critical but stable condition. Thats what chief motta called it. And again, this this suspect was a felon. He was on probation with the Santa Clara County probate office. So this is a person who has an extensive criminal history. And we dont know what prompted this. I guess it was the fight that they were having. But we dont know why he decided to attack police. Julie. And lamonica, the chief, also described the partner. They were both a ten year veterans, both ten year veterans with the San Jose Police department. Tell us a little bit about what the chief said about how the partner was able to pull his female off that female officer out of the line of fire from possibly being fired on again. He told us that this officer was extremely brave and his first reaction was to bring his partner to safety. They were not able to fire back at the suspect, but he got his partner out of the line of fire. And i want you to take a listen to what he had to say about that. Well it followed next was an act of undeniable courage that few of us will ever experience without hesitation or consideration for himself. The officers partner extracted the victim officer from the line of fire to a place of safety, where he began to treat her injuries, actions that surely contributed to both of them surviving this deadly attack. Now we also heard from san jose mayor matt mahan, who thanked the officers, all of the officers who respond. And there were other agencies who respond to this as well. And of course, theyre all praying for her to recover again, she is in critical condition, but stable. And they have not released this officers name, julie. All right. And just to reiterate that the wife of this was made it out of that building safely and then that suspect was arrested after an hours long standoff. Lamonica thank you. And more now on how the suspect was taken into custody. He was holed up inside the home, refusing to come out. Swat officers were called to the scene and tactical negotiators tried to convince the suspect to surrender. But then thats when a loud boom from a police flash bang was deployed as was tear gas. I was just standing and looking at what was going on and i heard a big old boom. And i thought maybe i was like a little tired because my eyes just started watering. Then the aroma of like ammonia came over me. I was like, wow. Then i see one of the guys jump out of the van several Police Agencies responded to that scene, including a sheriffs swat team and San Jose State University police. Now to the injured officer again, taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and remains there tonight as lamonica reported, critical but stable condition. The chief says she is a ten year vet of the police force and the first female officer to be shot in the line of duty in san jose. Brooks jarocz picks up our Team Coverage from just outside the hospital several hours after the officer arrived at the hospital , we saw the police chief and several other high ranking officials with the San Jose Police department exiting the emergency room. And since then weve seen officers coming and going all day long. San jose Police Cruisers filled the fire lane in front of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Officers headed straight to the emergency room to check on one of their own. A female officer shot outside a home following a family disturbance call. Neither has her name. No one else was hit or hurt when investigators say officers were fired upon wednesday morning, mayor matt mahan saying in a tweet, i am praying for the swift recovery of our San Jose Police officer who was shot this morning by thoughts are with her family during this unimas difficult time. Fellow officers posted up and planned to stay at the hospital in solidarity, setting up a tent, tables and chairs and stocking cold drinks. But by early afternoon, officers trickled out of the e. R. Two of them exited with a paper bag and wearing surgical gloves, taking away potential evidence. Then an hour later, a flatbed tow truck arrived, hauling off a Police Cruiser suspected of being used in quickly getting the injured officer medical attention. Walk San Francisco and families for safe streets organized. This event is taking place near the scene of that crash. They say many people have been moved by this loss. We wanted to hold space. We want to definitely have a place for people to come to grieve to here , to hear whats happening and to be present and to be with each other. So far, officials have not released any further information on the family, their names or where they live. Ctvs christian captain brings us the latest now on the investigation and how pedestrian advocates say this deadly crash could have been avoided. San Francisco Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision here tuesday night. The victim, a four Year Old Girl, being pushed in a stroller with her mother and father in the intersection of fourth and king streets. The girls father also struck was last reported to have lifethreatening injuries in the hospital. The mother reported to be physically unharmed. The driver remained on scene and was arrested. Police say drugs or alcohol dont appear to be a factor. Pedestrian Safety Advocates are saying this case with such a young victim is tragic. We lose a lot of people every year in traffic crashes, especially pedestrians. But this is a four Year Old Girl. And its just its not right. Marta lindsey from walk says the little girls death was the 11th of the year. Lindsey says the intersection of fourth and king is already on their radar as being a dangerous one with pedestrians coming and going to sporting events and traffic rushing to get on and off interstate 280. This has happened before. Crashes are happening here all the time and so those are the streets that need the most aggressive treatments by the city to really make it possible for someone to cross the street safely. The Organization Says that this intersection, king street, is broad, sending a signal to drivers that they can speed up and having two right turn lanes to the freeway is a recipe for disaster walk. Sf says the city needs to make changes here to make the intersection safer, reduce the lanes, no turn on red so theres just reducing all kinds of opportunity for conflict. Pedestrians get there, turn drivers get their turn. Giants fans Linda Schaefer and carmel stanek were at the game tuesday night and saw the aftermath of the deadly crash. They say they know firsthand how walking these streets to and from the ballpark can be dangerous. I say it every game we come to too much speeding. What is the speed limit . I asked an officer today and he said 35 miles an hour. Well youre not doing 35 miles an hour out here. Both regularly walk in the area near the ballpark and say vehicles go too fast. Its sad to see all these cars how theyre going so fast and 35 miles an hour. They better put a lot of speed bumps out here in order to stop them. Thats the only thing thats going to stop them. A police did arrest the driver of the car involved in that deadly collision. The driver facing three counts of failing to yield to pedestrians and vehicular homicide in San Francisco. Christien kafton ktvu. Fox two news. The driver has been identified as karen cartagena. Shes 71 years old. She was arrested for vehicular manslaughter and three counts of failure to yield to pedestrians. New at six laguna honda hospital in San Francisco has been recertified by state health officials, ending an 18 month long battle to save the public nursing home. Ktvu Cristina Rendon joins us now from the newsroom on why this recertification was so important. And also how quickly it was approved here. Christina well, mike, the approval came relatively quickly, just five days after laguna honda submitted the request to the California Department of health. The public Skilled Nursing facility was facing closure last year and was decertified for noncompliance on several safety issues, including two non fatal overdoses at the facility. That meant the hospital was pulled from medicaid and medicare program. Now californias medical aid program, medical, accounts for 95 of that facilitys funding. The director of the San Francisco Health Network credits laguna honda staff for stepping up to make the needed changes. The past 18 months have seen nothing short of a transformation of laguna honda into a world class or the world class Skilled Nursing facility, one that will continue to serve San Francisco for generations to come. Our goal has always been to demonstrate that we meet the highest standards and meet them every day. The white house has not yet confirmed whether President Bidens lake tahoe visit is personal or if he will be there on business as firefighters are battling several wildfires in the northern part of the state. The rapidly spreading head fire and ash fire have burned 2700 acres in Siskiyou County and have prompted evacuation orders tonight. Those fires are not contained. Uc berkeley professor Scott Stevens is an internationally recognized expert in forest and wildfire science. You dont really get much average lightning fire ignitions. You either get very little or you get a bunch forest fire science actually suggests less this year. I think with all the rain and all the good snow we had that i think theres a relatively low chance that we might get huge lightning fires. Not to say it zero because of that moisture level. Were in a much better position than we were last year. That said, most at risk, says stevens, are grasses, lands and oak woodlands because rain grew them to twice their normal volumes. We are really going into a period now where were at the mercy of the weather and that really is the heat, the wind and any potential lightning that comes through the fuels are the driest. We traditionally see the offshore wind events this time of year. Now of course, Climate Change has something to do with this, but not quite as much as you may think, at least for now. This is just thats just a little isolated breakaway plug of moisture that bump into a mountain and then it went into threw off a few lightning strikes, certainly. And we have those all over the state right now. The big flow, the big picture like this, you can just picture that and its not going away. This circulation is going to last right through this weekend into early next week with some potentially wet conditions developing early next week as a tropical moisture gets much of it, a lot of it way more than what i just showed you. The humidity stays about the same. A Class Action Lawsuit has now been filed by those who claim sexual abuse and retaliation at the Federal Correctional Institution in dublin. The lawsuit was announced today during a News Conference and rally outside the oakland federal courthouse. Named in that lawsuit, the federal bureau of prisons director colette peters, theecls from 50 former and current female inmates. The lawsuit alleges the sexual abuse has been ongoing despite the conviction of the prisons former warden and charges against seven correctional officers. We know that prison staff have raped, assaulted and harassed dozens and dozens of incarcerated people and punish those who dare to speak out when they locked us up, they locked us up and basically threw away the key because we were in their control. But yet and still they treated us like trash. If the judge certifies the lawsuit as class action, it will cover all 600 women at fci dublin. The bureau of prisons has not yet responded to our request for comment at least eight people were detained at a union protest of state workers in sacramento. To shut it down. Members of the union that represents nine different state worker bargaining units tried to block access to the legislatures office building. The chp, which handles security for some government buildings in sacramento, ordered the protesters to leave. Workers have been without a contract for more than a month. Students and teachers in the San Francisco unified School District returned to the classroom today. Many are excited, including four year old bridget, who started tk and her mom. It makes me feel wonderful that shes going to be here with some amazing teachers. But as many are excited, many parents are also unhappy as teacher shortages continue to be a growing issue. The last numbers that we saw, theres 174 Job Vacancies currently in San Francisco. This time last year in the district, there was around 70. So it is it is intense. Its a crisis. She and other union Officials Say if districts raise the pay, theyre likely wouldnt be a shortage. We asked the president of the states Teachers Association why that pay hasnt been increased. One of the biggest things is funding local School Districts. They do get state funding. So if the state doesnt go up enough, it doesnt increase enough. We cant get those salaries. And so that creates a instability and numerous lightning strikes, as you know, numerous lightning strikes, quite a few. And thats this is right now. Last night it went off the night before that went off. The night before that, it went off, especially in the Sierra Nevada and over into the siskiyou, where weve had a few reports of fire fires reported. Theres a lot of rain with these as well. So its not a lot of dry lightning, but lightning nonetheless. This time of year, not a good thing. And you can see that some tropical moisture out there now, mount diablo, i kind of wished i would have had the satellite image. You could match it up with this live picture. But theres a little bit of stratus cumulus there and looks like just some activity probably blow off from that system down around hamilton and down to Livermore Valley. So these are the highs from today. It was hot. It was humid. That low stays put. And as it does, we go right into the next few days with a cooler pattern as a little bumps closer to us. But the big picture here is, is that flow, that southerly flow, that big thing i did thats going to last to some extent as we go into next week and next week, theres the potential. You hear a lot about this. Theres a potential for a tropical storm, could be a hurricane. Itll fall apart. It wont be a hurricane here. But that moisture will be affected northward, potentially. The models are suggesting that a copious amount of moisture would be affected northward and that would bring showers and rain to the desert southwest. Thunder showers up here, heavy showers in the central valley. Well see. Its a long way off, but thats thats a buzz. So youre going to hear a lot about that. And its because of this big flow which continues into thursday evening and then thursday into friday morning. So in some Thunder Showers friday night, again. So just this this pattern and thats the way it is. And its not going to be as hot tomorrow or the next couple of days. It would be a little cooler tomorrow and a lot cooler as we go into the weekend with highs in the 80s, the fog at the coast, the high clouds over the overhead, not 100 tomorrow, but mostly low 90s to mid 90s in the hot spots and then five day forecast. So yeah see temperatures going to drop off a little bit which is nice itll take but the humidity stays high in that potential for thunderstorms remains.
