Is here. Richmond bridge. Did i hear that or is that better . What well, yeah, we can start on the rich. Know you start wherever you want. Sal. Its your show, steve. I take requests, you know that. Especially from you. Lets go to the Richmond Bridge as the man said, and show you that traffic is moving along very well. No major issues there. I do see a bunch of slowing on a highway four westbound and its not unusual. However, the speeds are down and you can see that the speed here is down to 11 miles an hour. Thats pretty slow. Bay bridge is backed up all the way out to the macarthur maze. Metering lights are on san mateo bridge, moderate if youre driving west and if youre in the Silicon Valley right now, westbound traffic still looks pretty good. Getting out to sunnyvale and cupertino. Its 701. Lets get right back to the headlines. Sal, thank you. We are monitoring the developing story of a fire at a steel recycling plant near the port of oakland and ktvu studios at jack london square. This is a live picture youre looking at from our roof cam. You can see that the smoke and theres still some flames burning there from this fire. This dense smoke forced the bay area air Quality Management district to issue an air quality advisory. Now we want to show you another angle of this fire. This is video from overhead. Firefighters putting out the fire. This is recorded by an aerial drone. Officials are worried that the smoke could affect cities like oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda, even as far south as san jose. But the Environmental Protection agency is at the scene and says the air quality so far is normal. However the advice is for people to shut all doors and windows. If you live in the area, especially in oakland, this fire started last night at around 530 at schnitzer steel in west oakland. Flames came from a pile of debris that was being stored outdoors as plumes of smoke could be seen for miles, especially at jack london square. Oaklands interim fire chief described the fire as stubborn and difficult to put out. It took hours for crews to finally get a handle on the situation, and they needed help from both alameda and San Franciscos Fire Department boats. Its a pretty stubborn fire. Its a very, very large pile of debris and also the way the pile is, is positioned on the yard. We werent able to get to the back of it, so thats why it was it was valuable to have the fire boats come because they can pull right up to the dock and hit it from the back. No one was hurt. Its too soon to know how the fire started. The pile of debris was much larger than normal because a shredder at that recycling plant broke down several days ago. Schnitzer was waiting for repair parts to arrive. All right, ali. Tom. 703 also this morning, the death toll in hawaii from those destructive wildfires has gone up. Officials on maui now say 36 people have died. That number could go higher and while the fires are starting to come under control, now comes the massive task of sifting through the damage during the night. We found out on top of the 36 deaths, more than 270 buildings have been damaged or destroyed, including most of the Historic Town of lahaina. Local, state and federal Officials Say aid is beginning to arrive now in hawaii. The mayor of maui posted a message of thanks to wellwishers these past few days. The resolve of our families business cases and visitors have been tested like never before in our lifetime. The President Biden ordered all available federal assets to help with the response he said the Hawaii National guard is using firefighting helicopters as well. And weve been told those helicopters dropped more than 150,000 gallons of water over the fires yesterday. And along with those firefighting helicopters were also getting the first looks at the damage in lahaina from the sky. Andre senior, you have more on that. Well, dave, take a look at the scene right behind me. Many of these buildings right here that once stood in the town of lahaina, well, they are gone right now. Its one of hawaiis most historic cities and was once the capital of the hawaiian kingdom. But now these images bring back memories of the destructive california wildfires. So we expected to see some structures burned and so forth and some damage. But we were not we were not prepared for what we saw, what we saw looked like an area that had been bombed and burned by in a war zone. Now, much of the historic front street is gone, as well as Historic Buildings dating back to both the kingdom of hawaii and some of the first missionaries in whalers to come there. On top of being historic , it was also a bustling tourist area with restaurants, luaus and shops all those that were working in those retail areas and restaurants and so forth. Theres no business anymore. This will be a devastating effect, not just on maui, but the whole state economy right in the lahaina harbor, the courthouse in there, the mission home, all the church, all the places that are tourist, areas that are hawaiian history are gone and that cant be replaced. Thousands of people still evacuated this morning looking for help right now while aid is on the way. Experts say it is particularly difficult to get resources to maui. Unlike california, where we can rely upon mutual aid from other states and other counties. Were talking about an island trying to get resources from other islands makes it difficult. Roads are impassable, power lines are down, cell communication is hampered. Its all going to make this a very difficult recovery. Hawaiis Lieutenant Governor said overnight that its too early to know how long it will be until people can return to whats left of their homes, but said theyre already expecting the recovery to take years. Over 11,000 people jumped on flights to leave maui as those fires forced evacuation. And were hearing harrowing tales now from people still trying to escape the raging fires on the island right now. So lets turn things over to amanda quintana, live at San Francisco International Airport with much more on the story. Amanda well, andre, we just saw a few passengers come here landing from maui. We spoke to some of them about their experience. Luckily, some of them say that they were not affected at all by these fires. But were also speaking to some people from maui who live there in maui. So well get to that soon. But many of those vacationers, they had no power. Weve heard of people who were staying at airbnb. Their airbnb ended up burning down. So a lot of them were really affected by those high winds that fueled those nearby fires. Hawaiis acting governor signed an emergency proclamation to deter tourists from visiting maui. The department of transport had already been urging visitors to leave and stay away from maui last night, passengers began landing back here at sfo, many of them leaving behind tragic scenes. This morning. We spoke to one maui resident who says he is going on a planned trip right now, but he hates to leave behind all the people who need help. If we feel kind of guilty leaving, really, i mean, we wish we could have stayed to help and do more. I mean, you cant comprehend that. Youre just so helpless when all thats going down and the communications are down. The heat was so hot, it blistered the concrete and cut the lines, burnt the lines underneath. Theres no fiber optics. Theres no internet, theres no phone. You cant contact anyone over there. 11,000 people evacuated from maui yesterday. Airlines are bringing in larger planes and increasing service to get people out of there. And home safely. The Hawaii Department of transportation says there were still some empty seats on planes, though, because the fires caused road closures that prevented passengers from getting to the airport. Busses stepped in to help get people through. Were told 600 people spent the night at Kahului Airport to get on early flights and get out of there. Were expecting about 1500 people to evacuate from maui today. So theyre going to be on some of those flights that are landing here at sfo and will continue to talk to people. I know i spoke just with a family who said they luckily went to that Historic Town the day before the fire started. So they, you know, nearly made it out. They feel lucky. Theyve talked to other people on planes who spent the night in the airport who had very devastating stories during their vacation. So well get you some of those throughout the morning live at sfo. Amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. All right, amanda, thank you. And make sure you stay right here with us on mornings on two for the very latest on the situation in maui and throughout the day. You can go online to ktvu. Com. 709 is the time now in petaluma. Police are reminding people to be careful at atms, gas station pumps and other places where card readers are used. Police say people have found skimming devices on some machines in the area. A skimmer is a card reader that can be disguised to look like part of an atm, but it illegally collects card numbers and other private information for thieves to steal and use later before you use an atm. The advice is look for damaged parts or anything loose that could indicate someones tampered with it. They also say people should block the keypad when they enter their security codes in case theres a hidden camera somewhere. They also suggest people check their Bank Accounts regularly for anything unusual. Good advice, ali. Time now, 710. Will a key vote expected later today by the state Public Utilities commission to decide if there should be more self taxis on San Francisco streets. Both crews and waymo hope to get approval rides. If it is approved, it could make sane twf Driverless Cars competing for passengers against rideshares and taxis. But critics that include the San Francisco Fire Department, once state regulators to reject that approval because of safety concerns. Time now is 710 as we look at the commute, you can see that traffic is going to be mostly good, especially on some of the normal south bay commutes that Silicon Valley drive looks pretty good. Heading west over to sunnyvale and cupertino, no major issues. Lets check out that san mateo bridge. You can see that this commute is much better than a couple of days ago. No incidents here or on the dumbarton bridge at the bay bridge toll plaza. Its moderate. Its not all that heavy. I can tell by looking at that ramp on 880. And of course, highway four does have slow traffic as usual through pittsburgh in the concord 680, developing some slowing from concord to walnut creek 7011. Lets go back to the desk. All right. So well, it is found in some older tires. Its also a chemical preserve. Now, california wants it removed starting in october. Still to come, the potential harmful effect its causing to marine life across california and the search for a missing teenager from the south bay continues. Well tell you where search crews are now focusing their efforts after the teens car was found, a month after she went missing the bay area. This is a chance for students to meet their new teachers and see their friends again. A mix of excitement and a little bit of anxiety. For some, this is back to school day in San Ramon Valley. Mt. Diablo san jose unified and Santa Rosa School districts just to name a few. Oakland unified started this past monday in San Francisco. Unified students are back in the classroom starting on wednesday. All right. Our time is 715 and the San Jose Unified School District School starts today. And a lot of students will be better prepared thanks to san jose firefighters. The firefighters passed out new backpacks filled with supplies at washington elementaryhool. They purchased backpacks which inclinspire some of the students as kids look up to firefighters. And i know were role models to them and maybe we can inspire them one day to be a firefighter. Two in their community and help out the community they grew up in. Now, this year, san jose firefighter was purchased and donated a thousand backpacks for the students. Theres more doubt this morning about the future of cal and Stanford Athletics. Espn is reporting that the Atlantic Coast conference met yesterday to discuss the possibility of allowing the west coast schools to join. But that this idea, quote, hit significant roadblocks. The acc didnt take a vote and will keep considering the proposal, which faces some long odds because the conference doesnt think cal and Stanford Athletics will bring much in additional revenues. You see regions met earlier this week in a closed door session about the future of cal in the dwindling pac 12 conference, but no final decision was made. Officials say too many hot dog vendors took over during the pandemic, causing a fire hazard and health violations. Patrons want them. Thats not the issue. The issue is managing the number and not and being able to have a secure and safe parking area. So in the event of an emergency, people can get out. They dont need to crack down on all these people out here just trying to make a living. Its so expensive to live in the bay area. I found recent weeks the police have been educating the vendors, urging them to get a permit be d they have to leave. State reguls are requiring tire manufacturers to s alternatives for some of the chemicals found in california waters that kill endangered fish. The state of california adopted a rule that will make tire makers evaluate replacing a preservative. They usually use to keep those tires from cracking and crumbling. A study from 2020 found that when bits of those tires break off, rainfall causes chemical from those pieces to flow into rivers, streams and creeks and pollute them, Laboratory Tests found young salmon died within a few hours after exposure to these chemicals. Tests in the state, including the bay area, have found the chemicals in some of our waterways. Wow, thats serious. All right. Time is 718. Were going right back to sal. Youve been busy. Did you fix everything now . Well you know, dave, as far as theres slow traffic out there, there is a bunch of slowing, but its not affected by major crashes. So i think thats for this time of the morning. Ill consider it fixed. Westbound bay bridge backed up to about the 880 overcrossing so you can see traffic is moving along. Okay there are no major problems here and you can also see that the san mateo bridge looks good. I think this commute on this thursday is going to be a little bit better as we start getting closer to the end of the week. There have been no major issues, northbound 101, some slowing approaching highway 85. But the rest of that Silicon Valley commute looks good. We havent talked a lot about the east bay commute on 880 and thats because there hasnt been a lot of slowing this morning. Theres some coming out of hayward to union city and thats about all. 718 lets bring steve and steve. We lost another one. Robbie robertson. Yes, i saw that yesterday. The band the last waltz, still one of the best concert movies ever did you ever go see the band . I never did. Yeah, me neither. There are certain bands now, sal. At the time i was like, no way. Now im like, why didnt i go see them right . Right. Yes. Regret that was one. That was one. Good morning, los angeles. Its raining. What . Yes, it is. Look at that. A lot of cloud covers some rain moving in. Also up into Santa Barbara, out to palm springs, close and moving up to Central Valley. Now a little bit of, coalinga looks like a collapse, but there was a little Lightning Strike there just to the east of paso robles. So some of that moisture is on its way, 50, 60 on the temps here, 36, 38 where truckee and South Lake Tahoe. Thats cool. Mammoth was down to 39. Now theyre 48, but their temperature bounces all over the place. I must be wind driven. Thats the only thing i can think of now. This is the remains of a tropical system thats moving north. Its going to always tough to forecast where that moisture is going, but it does look like an increase in some higher clouds on the way. Eventually over the next couple of days, itll show up. Its just a matter of how much and will it have anything to work with. But the humidity factor will go up if you get those tropical clouds. Forecast models have a difficult time latching on to this. There will be multiple impulse like spoken of. Well rotating around one band moving through. Now, the first initial one looks to be san jose, Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains down to monterey, also into the Sacramento Valley and tahoe and truckee. See that moisture. The key is theres a low forming off the Central California coast. The circulation around that is counterclockwise taps into that moisture and brings it back in. So between now and end of the weekend, some high and midlevel clouds, maybe some scattered showers possible in the mix here. But for today, unless youre south, i dont think you have to worry about it. But drizzle looks to be with us tonight. Some mornings and things beginning to juice up there in the mountains. So those lows will go up. I know theyre cold this morning, but some of that activity could spill back in towards the Sacramento Valley, Santa Clara Valley, maybe eastern solano, Contra Costa County will be areas to watch Going Forward. Some day. For most there, the breeze does pick up a bigger fog bank today. 60s 70s 80s on the temps inland temps if they dont get the cloud cover, theyre going to get into the 90s here. Well ease into it but it does look warmer. Just depends on how much cloud cover we get. All right. Thank you, steve. A somber remembrance 78 years later. Still to come, the bay area ceremony marking the atomic bombing on nagasaki, japan. Also, an update on the health of 90 year old senator Dianne Feinstein, who fell at her home in San Francisco to tell you what a Health Expert told us visit your local volvo retailer, to experience a volvo fully electric vehicle during the summer safely savings event. Feinstein californias senior senator. Senator is still at her home in San Francisco right now. On tuesday, she was at the hospital after she fell in her home. Senator feinstein is the oldest person right now serving in the us senate. Back in february, she contracted shingles and missed several votes. During the three months she was out. And there were more calls by senators from both Political Parties for her to step down. But the experts say its not just her age. You have to consider. You can have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail and then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. And senator feinstein has been adamant. She said she will serve her full term, which ends in january of 2025. As senator feinstein was not able to go to the lake tahoe summit, leaders from california and nevada came together to talk about ways to protect the basin. Senator feinstein actually helped launch the annual event back in 1997. Its a 27th year for the summit. It brings together lawmakers from both Political Parties to talk about the threats facing lake tahoe. That includes an increase in trash traffic, air pollution and more. The governor of nevada says its important to put politics aside to protect the region. Thats vital to both states. But i think its important for you to hear some very important points today on behalf of the state of nevada to include the state of california, because this is all about partnership, right . Its about bipartisan partnership. And thats the complete intent of what were trying to achieve to ensure that we maintain tahoe into the future for todays generation and future generations. And former House Speaker nancy pelosi was the keynote speaker. This summit comes during a push to extend a federal program called the lake tahoe restoration act. That provides money for environmental projects. Its due to expire next year. Well, today, hollywood strike will be in the bay area. Well tell you the scramble to safety for both tourists and the locals from ktvu fox two news, this is mornings on two. Well, good morning to you. Welcome back to mornings on two. Im dave klein. Im allie rasmus. Today is thursday, august 10th. We want to get you outside and show you what the forecast has in store for us. Steve paulson keeping an eye on things outside. A lot of cloud cover here. Low clouds, you guys, some drizzle inland. Everyones rather close here on satellite. There are some breaks in it, but san jose has a little bit of cloud cover, but more so north. Weve seen this pattern most of the week with some more significant breaks in areas to the south. But speaking of areas to the south, tropical moisture has arrived in Southern California and is lifting northward. This is something to keep an eye on for later today. Tonight, as we go into the next couple of days, not for today, but i think Santa Clara Valley this evening, some of those higher clouds will start to move in 60s, 70s and 80s on the temps. All right. Sal is here. Hes been kind of busy from the hop, from the jump and he will tell us now things are a little better. Steve. Finally, i think things are getting more normalized out there. Lets go and see. Contra costa county starting their highway four. Does slow down through pittsburgh bay point. Thats usual. Then we have the slowing and concord to walnut creek and through pleasant hill. Not bad. And 80 from elsa brandt into berkeley. All these are very typical commutes. And at the bay bridge we have about a ten minute delay. It hasnt dealt any farther than that. Thats pretty good. San mateo bridge is crowded, but not stop and go. 732 lets get back to the headlines. All right. Thank you. Well, oakland firefighters are now in the 14th hour of battling flames. Nets are steel plant in west oakland. Were going to take you out there live. This is from our roof cam. You can see what were talking about. The giant plumes of smoke coming from the flames still out there. That smoke has triggered an air quality advisory that has remained in effect. Dave detailing youve been out there for a couple of hours near that plant in west oakland. Whats the latest on the napa to get it under control . Dave good morning, dave. Well, weve been hearing loud booms coming from the site where crews are fighting this fire. But take a look at the scene. You can see right here, all this standing water right here. This is all a result from the fire being drenched onto that large pile of steel debris. And if we zoom into the actual site, you can see crews, they are working to attack this fire. And what were seeing are claw cranes moving small piles of debris as its being moved. Fire hoses are spraying the area down because of this burning debris. The smoke, it continues to below and is being seen across the bay area. Now, heres what we know about the fire. It broke out at the schnitzer steel recycling yard yesterday around 530. Since then, large plumes of smoke have been filling the air. You can see it. You can smell it. And cities across the bay area, including oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda and even as far south as san jose, are experiencing the smoke. The Environmental Protection agency is at the scene and says despite what people are seeing and smelling, the air quality is normal. What is burning is that pile of steel debris. Its still unclear how it all started, but we do know the pile was larger than has been down according to fire officials. I think its normal business for sanitizer. They dont usually have piles of this size, but theyve had some some technical difficulties over the last week. And the power has gotten bigger than normal. So were just investigating how it started. The fire is contained. Theres no chance of it spreading anywhere right now. Were just trying to get all the fire out of the to the all the way to the bottom of the pile and get all the fire out. Now this is the third fire to break out at the facility since 2018. The last one was in 2020 when we saw a similar fire to what were seeing today. Again, crews still battling this blaze. They say it is contained to that relatively large pile of steel debris. What we are seeing are crews hosing down that pile as crews claws continue to move small sections of that steel because as weve heard from police, rather, what weve heard from fire officials is that whatever is burning is at the center of that pile. And what theyre working to do is to gain access to it so that they can officially put it out again. The cause remains under investigation. Were live this morning in west oakland. Dave devlin, ktvu fox two news. Dave, thank you. We know at least 36 people have died in the wildfires burning on maui, but there is some good news when it comes to containing those fires. Firefighters are dealing with more favorable weather conditions today. The powerful winds that had been pushing flames across the island over the last several days are expected to slow down. That will help crews gain ground against three separate fires burning on the island. Two of the fires are 60 contained as of this morning. Entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina have been turned to ashes. Our time is now 736. If you have plans to go to maui, state officials are asking you, dont do it. Stay away. They say no one should be traveling to maui unless you live there and youre trying to check on your property. States also working with airlines to make sure there are enough flights leaving the island. They want to make sure people who live there have places to stay as well as have food and water. The state transportation director says most tourists understand and theyve been willing to stay at the maui airport. So they can evacuate as fast as possible. We got about a little over 11,000 travelers out of maui. If we add in the Airline Personnel to 11,400 or so. Alaska delta, united and american have increased capacity by bringing in larger, larger planes to ensure we get more seats, to get more people off the island. Southwest has dropped their their fares and increase their service. Were going to have another capacity of another 2000 or so Seats Available for the about 1500 passengers that we expect to want to leave the island. Now, most tourists say they never considered a wildfire would make it hard for them to get to the airport and get off the island. And one of the eyor london bree. The Mayors Office released this statement this morning saying the mayor was on maui for a personal trip when the wildfire started. She has left the island. Shes now on oahu. The mayor was never in danger. This wildfire fire is devastating to witness. And our thoughts are with the people of maui. Well, the experts say the Climate Change is fueling conditions that are driving the devastate wildfires there in hawaii. Hotter conditions, drier conditions, more variable rainfall. Its only going to exacerbate the problem. But at the good news in the sense of the fuel problem is that thats within our control right now. Scientists say the combination of high winds, dry vegetation and drought are making extreme events like a severe wildfire on a Tropical Island more common. So you have dry vegetation. That is when theres a spark. Its easier for that vegetation to ignite and for the wildfire to spread. Climate change in many parts of the world is increasing , increasing vegetation, dryness inn in large part because these temperatures are hotter in some cases because precipitation patterns are changing and the scientists think Climate Change is increasing. The likelihood of events like this in hawaii, in california, and all over the world. 738 now and a Police Investigation is underway in danville after bodies were found inside a home crime scene tape is up at a house on lockwood circle where theres an active investigation at this point, the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office says they are investigating this as a possible murder suicide. The search continues for a missing teenager from saratoga after her car was found almost a month after she disappeared. 17 year old katie schneiders 2019 honda was found on monday. She was reported missing back on july fifth. The car was on highway 35, a mile east of Castle Rock State Park in los gatos. And thats where investigators are focusing their search right now. Saratoga City Council Members say theres a lot of concern about the teens disappearance. Any time that a child or a young person disappears, it just breaks our heart. I mean, many of us have children and mine are all grown now, but it just breaks our heart. And so everybody pulling together. Katies mother used social media to thank people for their love and support. Volunteers are handing out fliers and putting out posters in the hopes that it can help lead to information to bring the teen home. Our time now. Here in california, theyre rising. Officials report a big increase in the number of positive test results. Information from walgreens show a 48 Positivity Rate of covid tests conducted in Walgreens Stores around the state. Thats the highest one week figure since january. Its almost double the 27 rate reported back in june. Time is 740. Its the middle of the week. Towards the end of the week, but school is back in session and sal is keeping an eye on the roads. Is it busier than what youve seen just in general in the last couple of months . Yeah, every single day it gets a little busier, but we still do have some better conditions out there. Lets start with mountain view, palo alto in the Silicon Valley, you can see that the traffic here is getting busier as it fills in. But we havent had a too bad of a normal commute. Bay bridge, oakland to San Francisco is backed up for a 10 to 15 minute wait. No major problems on that. San mateo bridge. So things are, i think theyre better than they were when we started. We had a lot of crashes. Lets take a quick look at the Richmond Bridge. You can see that theres the typical commute. So things are looking a lot more typical and fewer big problems out there. 741 lets check todays barrier weather here, steve. All right, sal, thank you. 50s 60s on the temps. Not much change. Most locations have some vloggers nearby, but there are a few breaks in the clouds. Solid again to the north, though, except for a few isolated cases. Look at the lows. And tahoe and truckee 3836. Even mammoth event one time was 39. Now theyre 50. But the morning lows have been cold here for early august. No doubt about it here. But i think thats about to change. Why . Because cloud cover is on the way. Active morning in Southern California and some of that moisture is moving north. We get a break from the heat, at least for a couple of days. There could be some 90s returning for the weekend, but higher clouds are on the way. If they do arrive and mugginess goes up, scattered showers are possible mainly south and over the sierra forecast model does kind of latch on to it again, this is really tough to forecast when you get tropical moisture coming up from the south. It tends to be a couple of impulses rotating through. The first one looks to be more towards san jose, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara Valley down to monterey. But look it over to and truckee, a lot of moisture there, filtering in. The key its a farther west, then the circulation around in the next, id say 2 to 4 days, we have a possibility of some of this moisture moving in here and maybe some scattered showers. Its that time of year, august, september drizzle will also be in the mix of fog is not going anywhere. It might get compressed a little bit but up in the mountains, change is on the way. Could be some pretty good boomers there. We dont want the lightning, but well take the rain. We dont want the lightning. But a lot of moisture on the way. So a combination of low clouds, some sun and some higher clouds will be in the mix here in the next few days. Morning overcast, some drizzle, sunny. A few high clouds could start to work their way in later today, more likely tonight, overnight into tomorrow, 60s, 70s and 80s. Again, kind of a broad brush, but well get cloud cover friday and again on the weekend into monday looks like. All right save time to 743 in south america. A political assassination. So the remains of what was once tropic system. Eugene. So higher clouds for the Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, first humidity factor will go up. Possible scattered showers already some i think they favor monterey peninsula more than anywhere else. And in the sierra nevada, again, it just depends on what forecast model you look at. But you can see the cloud cover is starting to lift north. A little bit of activity down around monterey and then also over the sierra starts to light up here. Thatll take us into friday night. Some of that moisture could easily wrap back around. Fog is not going anywhere. Itll just get compressed. Itll still be there. But some of the moisture is starting to see an uptick in that, no doubt about it. Along the sierra out to the valley as well. Sacramento down to the San Joaquin Valley and tahoe, truckee, probably not. For us, its close. I mentioned Santa Clara Valley, eastern solano, Contra Costa County. Next few days, some of that moisture starts to spin northward. Sunny for most today after we get rid of the low cloud deck, 6070s 80s. And these temps will probably be with us into tomorrow. Then well see if inland temps jump up a little bit. Just depends on how much cloud cover we get. Well get some the humidity will go up. A temperature should go up a few degrees. All right. Keeping with the pictures of the fog and whats going on weather wise across the bay area. Lets turn things over to Steve Paulson. I thank you guys. Yes, big fog bank in place. I think the biggest of the week here. There are a few breaks in there, but temperatures, 50s and 60s, well have to wait for this fog to burn off. The story is going to be, though, high and midlevel clouds coming in from Southern California. Visible satellite, though, still just shows fog and low clouds. They havent made the move yet, but theyre on their way. Theyve made it into the Central Valley a lot in Southern California. Some of this will play into our weather. The next few days. If youre trying to catch a flight at san jose International Airport, you need to hear this. 880 is a huge mess. If youre trying to catch a flight, dont miss it. Get on the road early. Northbound 880 is backed up from 280 because of a crash right near 101. This is affecting people trying to get to the san jose airport, northbound 101. Theres a crash near capitol expressway and this whole region here is going to be very, very slow on northbound 101, just north of 85. Youre going to notice something is wrong. And now we have a brand new crash where the motorcycle southbound, 680 right at the one on one 280 interchange. So what had been a nice commute suddenly isnt in san jose 801. Lets go back to the desk thank you sal. We are monitoring the developing story of a fire at a steel recycling plant near the port of oakland. This is a live picture you were looking at from our roof cam. You can see the smoke and the fire is still burning more than 12 hours after this fire initially started, although that plume of smoke is a lot lighter than what we saw, even just a couple of hours ago. The dense smoke prompted the bay area air quality dave detailing is near the recycling yard where this fire is burning. He says he has and pops coming from the area. Lets show you another view of this fire. This video was shot by an aerial drone. Officials are worried that the smoke from this fire could drift across cities like oakland, san leandro, fremont, alameda, even as far south as san jose. The Environmental Protection agency has people at the scene, though, and they say so far the air quality is normal. However, they do advise people who live nearby to keep their doors and windows shut. Now, this fire started last night around 530 at schnitzer steel in west oakland. Flames came from a pile of debris that was being stored outdoors. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles, especially at the nearby jack london square. Oaklands interim fire chief described the fire as difficult to put out. It took hours for crews to get a handle on it and they needed help from both San Francisco and alameda. Firefighter boats. Its a pretty stubborn fire. Its a very, very large pile of debris and also the way the pile is, is positioned on the yard. We werent able to get to the back of it, so thats why it was it was valuable to have the fire boats come because they can pull right up to the dock and hit it from the back. No one was injured. Its still too soon to know exactly how the fire started. But the pile of debris that caught fire was much larger than usual because a shredder at this steel recycling plant broke down several days ago. Schnitzer steel was waiting for repair parts to arrive to start breaking down that debris. You see in that pile. Stay tuned because we will have another live report from david lane at the scene coming up in about 30 minutes. None of the other big story were following for you this morning, the death toll in those destructive wildfires in hawaii has risen. Officials now say three dozen people have been killed in those fires and that number could go up. And while the fires are starting to come under control, now comes the massive and difficult task of sifting through the damage. Overnight, we learned that on top of the 36 deaths, more than 270 buildings have been damaged or destroyed, including most of the Historic Town of lahaina. Local, state and federal Officials Say aid is starting to arrive in hawaii. The mayor of maui posted a message of thanks to wellwishers these past few days. The resolve of our family , businesses and visitors have been tested like never before in our lifetime. Well, President Biden ordered all available federal assets to help with the response. He said that Hawaii National guard is using firefighting helicopters to help as well. And were told the choppers dropped over 150,000 gallons of water over those fires yesterday. And we are hearing harrowing tales from people leaving or people in maui trying to escape the raging fires on the island this morning. Quintana, a live at sfo where flights are landing this morning. Amanda yeah, thats right. There are a handful of flights that are landing from maui at sfo right now. We have a group here. This is from the flight that just landed here at 730. And these are some of the people coming back from maui. Many of the vacationers, they went turned out their place had no power. They experienced those high winds that fueled those nearby fires. Hawaiis acting governor signed an emergency proclamation to deter tourists from visiting maui. The department of transportation had already been urging visitors to leave and stay away from maui. Ive spoken with multiple people here who say they visited lahaina the day before that fire started. Now they cant believe that it is all gone. Some people were there for vacation. They basically went there, turned right back around to come back home. Once they realized there was no power, no food, no water, where they were staying, all of them sharing stories as they waited for hours at the maui airport last night. One woman was telling me they went to the road to hana and on their way back from the road to hana, they found out that their condo had burned down and they couldnt even get back there. So they stayed 21 people in a one bedroom home with the other group. 11,000 people evacuated from maui yesterday. Airlines are bringing in larger planes and increasing service to get people out of there and home safely. The Hawaii Department of transportation says there were still some empty seats on planes, though, because the fires caused road closures that prevented some passengers from getting to the airport. But busses stepped up to help get people through to the airport. Were told 600 people spent the night at Kahului Airport to get on early flights out of there. About 1500 people are expected to evacuate maui today. Ive talked to multiple people here. Its interesting some of the things that these people are saying is that theyre from the bay area. Theyre used to wildfires. So it didnt really affect them that much because theyre used to it, but they say seeing those people in hawaii, theyre not used to that. They were terrified. Just, you know, this area, historic area, destroyed. It was very emotional for these people. But a lot of people here in the bay area, you know, just praying for them, sending their thoughts and prayers. But unfortunately, we used to seeing some of that damage and destruction that theyre seeing as a result of these wildfires. Ive at sfo, amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. Thank you, amanda. Petaluma police are reminding people to be careful at atms, gas station pumps and other places where card readers are used. Key vote expected later today by the state Public Utilities commission to decide whether there should be more self driving taxis on San Francisco streets. Both cruz and waymo are hoping to get approval for around the clock robotaxi rides. If its approved, it could make San Francisco the first city in the country to have two fleets of Driverless Cars competing for passengers against rideshares and taxis. But critics, including the San Francisco Fire Department, wants state regulators to reject the proposal because of safety concerns. To time is 808 and we do see that traffic is going to be busy out there in many areas , especially the south bay. We had a couple of crashes. If youre trying to get to san jose airport, you need to know that 880 is very slow getting there and you might be late to your flight unless you add a lot of extra time. Dont count on it being cleared up by the time you get out there again, trying to get the san jose airport northbound 101 near capitol expressway. Theyre clearing an issue southbound 680 at 101. Theres a crash there as well. Lets go to the bay bridge toll plaza where you will see the traffic is improving. Its backed up to the end of that parking lot. There which is better than it normally is. You can also see the san mateo bridge is doing very well heading to the peninsula. Peninsula has been quiet today. 809 lets go back to the desk. Well, its found in some older tires and its a chemical preservative. And now california wants it removed beginning in october. Still to come, the potential harmful effects its causing to marine life across the state. And searching for a missing teenager in the south bay where search crews are now focusing their efforts after the teens car was found about a month after she went missing at a live picture at the entrance to Alamo Elementary School in the town of alamo and the San Ramon Valley. That school district, san ramon unified, mount diablo, san jose unified and Santa Rosa School districts are all returning to the classroom this morning. Again, this is the outside of alamo elementary where class got underway just about ten minutes ago. You can see some of the kids there, actually parents waiting outside the classroom as kids get ready to go into their class for the first day of school. They also had a chance to meet and talk to the superintendent who was out there this morning. Again, back to school for San Ramon Valley Unified School District and many others this morning. And a short time ago, we talked to the principal of elementary who says hes expecting a normal and fun school year. Well, were having our first day of school, so were welcoming all the kids back. And everyones super excited. We had an ice cream social yesterday which allows all the students to show up, get a little bit of a sense of where their classes meet their teachers and pick up registration packets and things like that. So the buzz on the campus was palpable yesterday. So i know its going to be a very excited kids today. The oakland Unified School District started class this monday. San francisco unified is back in the classroom starting on wednesday. And today School Starts for the San Jose Unified School district, and a lot of students will be better prepared thanks to san jose firefighters. They handed out new backpacks filled with supplies at washington elementary. This is the third year that firefighters have supported children at that school. Well, this year, san jose firefighters purchased and donated 1000 backpacks for students as well. Theres more doubt this morning about the future of cal and Stanford Athletics. Espn is reporting that the Atlantic Coast conference met yesterday to discuss the possibility of allowing the west coast schools to join. But the idea hit, quote, significant roadblocks. The acc didnt take a vote and will keep considering the proposal, which faces long odds because the conference doesnt think cal and Stanford Athletics will bring much in additional revenues. Uc regents met earlier this week in a closed door session about the future of cal in the dwindling pac 12 conference, but no final decision was made. Dozens of hot dog vendors who serve customers at the Oakland Coliseum parking lot may soon be told that they have to leave the Oakland Alameda county Coliseum Authority now considering how to control which vendors are permitted and which ones are not. Its so expensive to live in the bay area in recent weeks, police say they have educated vendors and urge them to get permits. Otherwise they may soon be ordered to leave or be hit with citations. California state regulators want to tear manufacturers to stop using a chemical that can harm fish and animals. The state of california will require to makers to replace a preservative commonly used that usually keeps tires from cracking and crumbling. A study from 2020 found that when bits of tires break off, rainfall causes chemicals from those tire pieces to flow into rivers, streams and creeks. Laboratory tests found young salmon died within a few hours after exposure to that chemical test in the state, including here in the bay area, have found the chemical in some of our waterways. All right. The rubber hits the road right now with traffic here. Sal castaneda with what thats looking like across the bay area. Hey sir. All right, andre, good morning. Good morning, ali. Right now, we do see improvement out there in the north bay and east bay where the bay bridge has improved quite a bit. A lot of these commutes are getting much better with no major issues. If you are driving on 92, the san mateo bridge, it looks good to the peninsula. You know, its not improved that south bay commute. My goodness, we had a lot of crashes here. All of a sudden, the one that sticks out to me is 880 northbound right before 101. If youre trying to get to the san jose airport, give yourself plenty of time. 880 is a mess. Some of the surface streets around there are also a mess. Northbound 101 is also very slow. Coming up, pat capital expressway and theres a motorcycle crash southbound 680 at 101 817. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. Thank you kindly, sir. Yes, sir. All right. Fog, low clouds, good surge there from marin county, north of 101. Well go up to petaluma, santa rosa, up to healdsburg, over San Pablo Bay out to vallejo, marin canyon, hidden brook. Looks like benicia as well. Probably puts the brakes on about cordelia that seems to be the line that up the napa valley all the way up to saint leanna thats a strong surge. Now there are some breaks to the south and beginning to the erode here. Watch that starting to right over the peninsula. See, thats disappearing, though. Pretty, pretty good. Fog bank, though, on most of the coast. San francisco over to oakland, parts of the east bay to the south, we have some tropical clouds. Its august that happens. September. Thats where we look for the remains of a past tropical system starting to make its move northward. This is going to play into our weather, no doubt about it. Next couple of days here. Pretty active in Southern California. Ill get out of the way so you can see the Santa Barbara as well. If youre traveling down there. A thunderstorm activity also on the high desert and San Joaquin Valley, 5060s on our temps. Temperatures really not changing all that much. Theres too much cloud cover. We had 30, 34 in truckee this morning at 501 34 South Lake Tahoe made it to 39. Now 45, 48, 80 on most of the desert, 70 in san diego, los angeles. With that cloud cover and some activity around there. Crescent city at 59, a lot of this moisture is heading towards us a little bit. As i Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains. It looks like monterey peninsula and the up in the tahoe truckee area. So temperatures on the weekend should rebound but a lot will depend on how many high clouds we get. And for how long. If you get the tropical clouds, the humidity factor goes up. Possible scattered showers, maybe Thunder Showers to the south and also over the sierra, things are beginning to pick up as far as amounts go for central sierra from bishop. Also South Lake Tahoe, truckee, maybe the Sacramento Valley, San Joaquin Valley, ill mention eastern solano, Contra Costa County and the Santa Clara Valley. I think theyre in the window for the best possibility. Fog and low clouds givess into the 80s hereo warm. We do get aith us today and tomorrow. Then inland temps should bump up, although will bt moisture. So thatll play into how hot we get as we go to the weekend. You guys, thank you, steve. A somber remembrance 78 years later. Still to come, the bay area ceremony marking the atomic bombing of nagasaki, japan. Plus, what a Health Expert told us about the scare involving 90 year old senator Dianne Feinstein who had to be hospitalized after falling at her San Francisco Home Hospital after she fell in her home. Senator feinstein is the oldest person currently serving in the us senate. Last february , she contracted shingles and missed several voting days during her three month absence that revved up calls by members of her own party and the Democratic Party and the Republican Party to step down. But experts say its not just her age that should be considered here. You can have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail and then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. Senator feinstein has been adamant that she will serve her full term, which expires in january of 2025. Meantime, senator feinstein was unable to attend the lake tahoe summit, where leaders from california and nevada gathered to discuss ways to protect the basin. Now, feinstein, in fact, helped launch the annual event back in 1997. This is the 27th year for the summit, which brings together lawmakers from both Political Parties to address the threats facing lake tahoe. That includes increase in trash and trash traffic and air pollution. Nevadas governor said its important to set aside politics to protect the region that is vital to both states. But i think its important for you to hear some very important points today on behalf of the state of nevada to include the state of california, because this is all about partnership, right . Its about bipartisan partnership. And thats the complete intent of what were trying to achieve to ensure that we maintain tahoe into the future. For todays generation and future generations. Former House Speaker nancy pelosi was the keynote speaker. The summit comes amid a push to extend a federal program called the lake tahoe restoration act. It provides money for environmental projects and is set to expire next year. Today, hollywoods strike will be in the bay area. More to the north starting to erode san jose peninsula and lifting north. You can see thats kind of been the pattern this week. But what has not been the pattern of these tropical clouds and they are inching closer right . Theyre heading up i5 are falling apart, but the leading edge of that is making its move. And the next couple of days, i would expect some of these to play into our forecasting. 60 to 70s 80s on the highs today. Sal is here. He was busy, got a little better then he got busy again. Were talking about the fire that started at the schnitzer steel recycling plant that is the site you were looking at. This fire started yesterday afternoon around 530, and it is still burning. This is a live picture of that fire from our roof cam here at the ktvu studios in jack london square. A large pile of debris has been burning since last night. That prompted an air quality advisory because of the sheer amount of smoke that was issued yesterday by the bay area air Quality Management district. However, the epa says nothing burning in here is particularly toxic. So that is a little bit of good news there. Lets bring in ctvs dave dudley live in west oakland, near where that fire is burning. How is it going out there . What are firefighters working on right now . A good morning, ali. You can smell it. You can see it. And if we take a live look at the scene right now, this is the least amount of smoke weve seen billowing from this burning pile of steel debris all morning since we arrived on scene. Cities across the bay area, including oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda. And even as far as san jose are experiencing the smoke. Like you said, the Environmental Protection agency is on scene. They say despite what people are seeing and smelling the air quality is normal. People are being advised to close their doors and windows. Now, what is burning is this pile of steel debris. Its still unclear how it started, but we do know the pile was larger than normal because the recycling plant shredder has been down. According to fire officials. We asked, well what d the fire and the steel were jut continuing to pull that that pile apart and get bottom of the pile. And once we do that, then we can put it under control in the fire, be completely out. Now, this is the third fire to break out at the facility since 2018. The last one was in 2020 and was similar to what were currently seeing today. Now as this fire continues to be knocked down, you can see crews, they are using crane claws as well as fire hoses. Those crane claws, they are moving portions of that steel debris to other locations. And as those spots open up, thats when the fire hoses continue to hit that pile. Again they are working to extinguish whatever is at the center of that large pile of steel. Were still waiting for an update from fire officials. And as any new information becomes available, we will bring it to you. Thats the very latest in west oakland. Dave, deploying ktvu fox two news. Kevin was 834. We now know at least 36 people have died in the wildfires burning in maui right now. But firefighters are expected to deal with more favorable conditions today. Those powerful winds that have been pushing flames across the island are expected to die down and that will help crews gain ground against the three separate fires burning on the island. Now, two of the fires are 60 contained as of this morning. Entire neighborhoods in the Historic Town of lahaina have been turned to ash. Officials are discouraging all travel to maui right now except for people who have been away and are trying to get back to check on their property. All tourists are being encouraged to leave the island. Officials want to make sure people who live there have places to stay, as well as food and water, along with counseling services. The state transportation director says most tourists understand and have been willing to stay at the maui airport. So they can evacuate as soon as possible. We got about a little over 11,000 travelers out of maui. If we add in the Airline Personnel, 11,400 or so, alaska delta, united and american have increased capacity by bringing in larger, larger planes to ensure we get more seats, to get more people off the island. Southwest has dropped their their fares and increase their service. Were going to have another capacity of another 2000 or so Seats Available for the about 1500 passengers that we expect to want to leave the island. Well, tourists say they have never considered a wildfire, making it difficult for them to get to the airport and off the island. And meantime, we are learning this. Experts say Climate Change is fueling conditions that are driving the devastation right now in hawaii. Hotter conditions, drier conditions and more variable rainfall. Its only going to exacerbate the problem. But at the good news in the sense of the fuel problem is that thats within our control right. Scientists say the combination of high winds, dry vegetation and drought making extreme events like a severe wildfire on a Tropical Island more common. So you have dry vegetation that is when theres a spark. Its easier for that vegetation to ignite. And for the wildfire to spread. Climate change in many parts of the world is increasing, increasing vegetation, dryness in in large part because temperatures are hotter in some cases because precipitation patterns are changing. Scientists think Climate Change is increasing the likelihood of events like this in hawaii, california and across the world as well. The number of covid cases across california are rising, with a big increase in the number of positive test results. Information from walgreens show a 48 Positivity Rate of covid tests conducted in Walgreens Stores across the state, the highest one week figure since january. And its almost double the 27 rate reported back in june. Meantime, a new variant now makes up a large number of us covid 19 cases. But the white house has not issued a statement yet that prompts concern, according to the cdc, the new variant five makes up 18 of infections. But doctors say the new strain is more contagious and expects that number will rise quickly. That one appears to be more infectious, meaning people are more likely to get it. This is likely based on a combination of summertime time and people are getting together, travel, a lot of engagement. Well, the cdc says it will issue recommendations for a new covid booster ahead of the winter surge. Time is 838 now and we see a lot of fog behind us here at the studios in the oakland estuary. You said its like fo, its starting to erode south of north, but north its still hanging in there. You can see a good surge there in marin county, although some breaks around mount town. But napa valley over San Pablo Bay out to vallejo, marin canyon, benicia, probably hidden brook and then all the way up you can see out to the Russian River up to healdsburg. Thats a pretty good little surge there. But watch it go poof. Just like that from south north starting to take off and disappear, although still pretty, pretty good on the coast. Were beginning to see it lift northward. There lifting northward. Also, are tropical clouds. They will be with us probably late tonight. Now, this again, will favor areas south first and then over the next few days, some of that moisture could get wrapped back around a low, which could bring it back in from the sierra. Lots of activity in Southern California, especially around Santa Barbara. Look at that heading down there. I would expect some activity to continue to drift northward, 50, 60 to almost 70 on the temps here, 59 to 69 from Half Moon Bay to brentwood, truckee dropped to 34 this morning. There are now 45. South lake tahoe dropped to 39 there now 48. Those lows will go up because the cloud cover is going to be on the increase here next few days. Very active Southern California beginning to lift northward on the central sierra. So i break from the heat for now, although it does look hotter for some inland temps. This weekend. I think the initial area of concern would be how many high clouds we get, humidity level probably go up. And if we get any scattered showers, it would favor areas to the south and over the sierra and as you can see, the amount on the precipitation is definitely going up. So that doesnt mean South Lake Tahoe is going to get 47 100. But around there is a possibility with some of that drifting back towards us, i would think late in the weekend here morning overcast already some breaks, some drizzle thats probably over with by now. Sunny, mild to warm. A little bit of a breeze always kicks in in the afternoon. So 60s, 70s, 80s, today and tomorrow. Look to be identical then except for the cloud cover that could be the key for friday and again as we go into sunday and monday you too. Thank you, steve. The second shooting happened monday night. One of vieiras guards shot and wounded a robbery suspect at the home depot in san carlos is a huge responsibility. When you put a gun in a persons hand to expect them to respond, perfect every time, pierce says the state needs to allow guards to use less lethal weapons other than tasers, which require you to be close to the suspect. Viera also says the two incidents are proof that criminals will steal even in the presence of guards. Four men are facing charges connected to a shootout at an East Palo Alto park last year. And that sent the markets up right when the opening bell rang this morning. Also as the bell rang this morning, disney stock jumped about 2 after announcing it is raising prices for its streaming service. Disney bad news for customers. Good news for investors. Taking a live look at the markets up across the board. But theyve slipped a bit in the last hour. The dow jones was up almost 300 points. Now close to 200 points, a little about a half of a percent. The s p 500 up almost a half of a percent, flirting with the 4500 level today. And the nasdaq up about a half as well, 13. 7 87 for the nasdaq. A big merger in fashion was announced this morning. But if youre trying to get to the airport, you should give yourself extra time. A lot of slow traffic on 101 as well in san jose. 851. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. Speaking of looking pretty good. So how do you do it . You get up at, oh, dark 30 every day. You know that . I know. I read your book. Thank you, sir. 60 on the temps for most already fog is retreating to the south, not to the north. Still hanging in there. And there it is. You can see little circulation again, right off point raised. That seems to be the norm this week here we get a little surface low there but south to north, that fog is disappearing yet its still hanging in there. If you go north of San Pablo Bay, a couple systems in the Pacific Northwest actually gave them some rain near hoquiam, but they had some rain. Decent amounts, i think could set a record rainfall in the last 24 hours. We though, are focusing everything towards Southern California because the remains are tropical moisture was once eugene in here and now starting to lift northward. These are always tough to forecast between now and actually sunday, monday, you could extend that outlook. Scattered showers are possible, more likely towards the monterey peninsula and over the sierra nevada. But you can see watch how the moisture starts to move north. So this would monterey, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara Valley, san jose, sierra nevada, then back towards the east bay, Sacramento Valley. San joaquin. That would be a couple of little impulses coming through the one off the sierra, the one coming in friday and again sunday night, monday. I think those are the ones we need to watch for. Solano county, also napa county and Contra Costa County. So a little bit of activity here picking up some of that activity in the mountains. Will the lows were cold in tahoe and truckee 30s. Thats going to change as that cloud cover begins to move in. We do with the fog. Then the sun. So it will be a nice day this evening though to the south, some of those higher clouds could start to filter in, but temperatures today and tomorrow not changing all that much. 6270s and 80s inland temps could bump up into the 90s depending on how much cloud cover we get. And also some of that cloud cover could give us a little splash and dash shower activity you guys over the next few days. Thank you so much. Appreciate it. Steve all across california, Water Management organization are taking steps to try and prevent another repeat of last winter. Were talking about levee breaks.
