Bank in place, a little drizzle out there, but temperatures, 5060s low clouds filling in nicely here. Not much change here compared to yesterday. All that tropical moisture we talked about is visiting Southern California for the high desert. And a little bit towards the central sierra. But for us, i think we have to wait a little bit before that maybe makes a move probably later in the weekend, 60s, 70s and 80s on those temps. All right. Sal is here. I dont know, picking up cones. Something else right now we have a crash, steve, that has all lanes here on 880 blocked southbound 880 at 16th. Let me put it on the map here for you. Southbound, 880 at 16th. The couple of trucks got into it in the 3 00 hour and its been theyre closed in that southbound direction. People are being taken off the freeway. Now. It is early enough that its not causing a major delay, but i would use eastbound 580 and forget about 880 south unless you are getting on the freeway after 16th. If youre getting on at the fruitvale area, well, then that should be okay. No problems northbound and well keep an eye on that for you. 401. Lets get back to the headlines. All right, sal, thank you. Lulu we have a house and our dogs are stuck in the house. Once the couple returned, they learned the fire had destroyed everything wrong. Their dogs tracking devices showed they had been in their house that burned. We just hope and pray that the smoke inhalation got them and that they just went to sleep. They didnt suffer. There was just numbing to the heart, to the mind, to everything. But i know people that have lost more. Hawaiis acting governor urged people to stay away. We signed another emergency proclamation which will discourage tourists from going to maui at sfo wednesday night. Okay a source tells me that San Francisco mayor london breed is in hawaii. She had planned to be there on vacation through the end of the week. We reached out to the Mayors Office for comment, but have not yet heard back from them. Reporting from sfo Jana Katsuyama ktvu fox two news. All right, jana and another resident of maui that we talked to said her family evacuated after seeing the flames and the smoke becoming more intense. It was scary. I think it was just more scary because cause i have two Young Children and so trying to avoid being on the road, but yet knowing that you need to you need to just to get to safety. So yeah, we ended up staying at my at my office that the office that the company that i work for in kahului and we stayed there for the night for safety. Were also monitoring the developing story of a fire at a steel recycling plant near the port of oakland because of the dense smoke. The bay area air Quality Management district issued an air quality advisory. Officials are worried that the smoke could affect cities like oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda. Even as far south as san jose. Were taking a look at live video of the fire right now. So you can see still pretty intense that thick smoke there. The Environmental Protection agency is there at the scene and says the air quality right now is normal, but does advise people to shut all your doors and windows in the area. Now, the fire started last night at about 530 at schnitzer steel in west oakland. Flames came from a pile of debris that was stored outside plumes of smoke could be seen for miles, especially at the nearby jack london square, oakland interim fire chief described the fire as stubborn and hard to put out. It took hours for crews to finally get a handle on the situation. They needed help from both San Francisco and alameda fire boats. Its a pretty stubborn fire. Its a very, very large pile of debris. And also the way the pile is positioned on the yard. We werent able to get to the back of it. So thats why it was it was valuable to have the fire boats come because they can pull right up to the dock and hit it from the back. No injuries are reported at this point. Its too soon to know exactly how that fire started. The pile of debris was much larger than normal because the shredder at the recycling plant broke down several days ago and the company was waiting for repair parts to arrive. And this is at least the third fire at schnitzer steel since 2018. The last one was in june of 2020. It was very similar to what we just saw back in 2021. The steel recycling plant paid 4. 1 million to settle with the state for illegally releasing Hazardous Waste and harm for emissions into the west oakland community. Now, as part of that agreement, schnitzer steel installed air pollution control equipment. Oakland as president dave cavell spoke about the fire online, saying that the team is still pursuing legal action against that steel company. He shared his view of the smoke over the port. The team filed a lawsuit against schnitzer steel back in 2020, claiming that the company is causing major environmental damage in the area. When it was announced three years ago, kaval said that the suit was part of the teams efforts to build a ballpark at the howard terminal, despite the team recently appearing to be fully committed to moving to las vegas. Kaval says the lawsuit is still ongoing. Its about a 45 minute drive south of lahaina. She says it was scary and tense. She could see the glow of those flames as they were coming down hill. Throughout the day, we had had these huge winds just nonstop with these giant gusts that prevented our firefight eaters from really being able to knock down those fires. And then last night, with the persistence of the wind and kind of a shift, it just blew the fire down the hill towards kihei. Now, the flames spread both north and south of where she lives. Communications were completely cut off as the flames kept moving. Some people who were sent to one evacuation site ended up being moved to another o during the night. I think we had 2100 people in our our Maui High School evacuate in point and that included people that had just flown into maui, caught off the plane, and it was like welcome to maui. The San Mateo County District Attorney says four people are facing charges in connection to a shootout at an East Palo Alto park last year and one man was killed. But the District Attorney says none of the suspects will face a murder charge. Instead theyll be charged with weapons charges. Ktvu south bay reporter Lamonica Peters has the details. Good. On may 17th, last year, East Palo Alto police say a gun battle ensued in broad daylight at jack farrell park. Thats not going to be tolerated in East Palo Alto. At least 33 rounds were fired during the shootout and it all happened in front of children and families who were sent running for safety. Community leader and pastor paul baynes says residents in East Palo Alto are relieved that four people have been charged in connection with the shootout and the death of 34 year old ralph fields. Fields was the cousin of nfl player devante adams. Both the da and police say tips and evidence from the community played a major role in identifying the suspects. And so the community has stood up. They have both been vocal and they have submitted their information privately and confidentially to the Police Department. And so thats what were going to continue to do is community charged in connection to the shootout is 38 year old Luis Mariscal being held in Santa Clara County. 21 year old miguel bramante, 49 year old Bobby Williams and 20 year old michael mackinac. While some of the people we charge are have been involved with gangs, this is not a gang conflict. The suspects will not face a murder charge. But between the four of them, theyll face 25 felony charges and enhancements, including assault with a Deadly Weapon and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. We cannot show who started the firing of the weapons, who acted in self defense and who was the aggressor. And we have to be able to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. And thats why we do not have that. As to mr. Fields, the person who was murdered out there on that day, the us marshal and Atherton Police were also involved in finding these suspects. The da also says that three of the four suspects were already in jail for other crimes when they were charged in this case. Lamonica peters, ktvu fox two news. Thank you. Lamonica. Now, vieira says the state needs to allow guards to use less lethal weapons other than tasers, which require you to be very close to the suspect. Vieira also says the two incidents are proof that criminals will steal even in the presence of guards. Todays the first day of school for about 100,000 students across the bay area. Now, as students are going back to classes, the National Threat Assessment Center is working with School Districts to keep everybody on School Campuses safe. So officials at the center are providing funding and training that could stop a School Shooting or have everybody know what to do. If there is a possibility of a gunman on campus, they are always intervene on points. And why . Because students exhibit concerning behavior in the months sometimes years leading up to their attacks. And Officials Say the goal is to get schools to the point where the staff and the students can recognize a possible threat before it happens. Then School Officials can take actions to remove the student, the staff or faculty member before theres violence on campus. All right. 438 is the time. We do have a little bit of good news, i think, from sal regarding that truck accident on 80. Yeah all the lanes are opened just a few minutes ago pam and dave southbound 880 at 69th and theres still a backup there as you head out thats the icon is where the crash was but again thats been clear however southbound 880 a 29th now were getting word of a fire underneath the freeway. The Fire Department is heading out there and well keep an eye on that for you. I just want to let you know that traffic is going to be slow. And i think i do have a view of the improving conditions there. It is. You can see earlier there was a big sea of traffic lights. There are brake lights. But now its gone again. Thats southbound 880 at at 16th. I do want to mention a crash in Mountain View, southbound 101 at 85. A deadly collision on right where those two freeways meet. Right there. And they have a couple of lanes blocked. Traffic is mostly getting by. But again, this is going to be there for a bit. It happened at about 345 this morning, just before that. And it was a very violent crash. One person was killed on the freeway there inside a vehicle and now theyre doing an investigation. 440. Lets go to steve now with todays weather. All right, sal, thank you. Decent onshore breeze here. Travis west, southwest to 23. See if that picks up. Pretty good fog bank in place. Temps are stuck 5060s on the temps here. Weve had more of a south wind versus more of a west wind. So thats allowing temperatures to be a little bit on the warmer side, especially in peninsula, a little cooler to the north, but still rather mild. I mean, fairfax 53, but i mean bolinas 57 and point res 57 those vallejo. So sonoma and everyone else is pretty close. Theres just not theres too much in the way of low clouds not for the mountains truckee again is dipped to the upper 30s. South lake tahoe is close. Mammoth is 41 degrees, 52 in reno. A couple of systems in the Pacific Northwest have gone through. Thats not really the focus anymore or the focus is going to be the tropical moisture thats moving into Southern California. An area of low pressure is going is forming off the Central California coast. And therein lies the rub. As we say, itll tap into this. Thats the way it looks here. The fog and low clouds not going anywhere but the higher clouds possible. Probably not until late tonight. More likely into tomorrow if you get that moisture, then the humidity factor goes up. This does tend to favor areas south and over the sierra nevada. We will have some drizzle, though, next couple of days. I dont think there will be that much in half moon bay, but i do expect a pretty good fog bank to continue. But watch over the mountains starts to pick up. Now again, that doesnt mean South Lake Tahoe is going to get that much, but its a sign of things to come as that tropical moisture moves in. Some of that could work its way back towards us as we head towards not only tonight, tomorrow, but again, i think sunday into monday morning, low clouds, overcast, sunny, mild to warm, few high clouds may start to drift into the southern part of our viewing area. That wouldnt be until later. But today, 6070s and 80s. All right. Thank you, steve hart. Break on the hawaiian islands. We continue to follow the latest developments of the Deadly Wildfires on maui. Feinstein is the oldest person right now serving in the United States senate. Last february, she contracted shingles. She missed several votes during three months when she was not working at that revved up the calls by members of both Political Parties for senator feinstein to step down. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. Now, senator feinstein has been adamant that she will serve her full senate term, which expire in january of 2025. But southern Santa Clara Valley , some higher clouds are possible if they do arrive, if they do, then itll be on the muggy side. Possibility of some scattered showers more likely favoring the sierra. Some of that moisture, though, looks like it wants to get close. It just depends on which forecast model pans out. But you can see the moisture lifting northward. Santa clara valley, monterey, again, thats probably more show than go. But the cloud cover there not only high clouds, midlevel clouds, but also low clouds. Some of that continues to move into the sierra. But i think theres a going the weekend. I think that looks to be the focus more so as some of that moisture gets caught around the low and then begins to backtrack off more likely sunday into monday. But its close enough that well mention it for the next couple of days. Drizzle will be with us. Theres some this morning. Well have more nights and mornings and watch the activity up over the mountains start to increase. Some of that could sneak in back towards us probably more in the way of just cloud cover. But if you get the tropical clouds, then, yes, the humidity goes up. Today its more low clouds. Once that burns back, sunny, maybe a few clouds coming in to the southern part of the viewing area later this afternoon. This evening, more likely to be tonight into tomorrow, 60s, 70s and 80s. Its a very, very large pile of debris. So its going to take a while. And oakland recycling plant on fire right now. Why its so hard to put the fire out and its not the first time this has happened from ktvu fox two news. This is mornings on two. Well, good morning, amy. Thank you for joining us. Welcome to mornings on two. Im dave klein. Good morning. Im pam cook thursday morning, august 10th. Steve paulson keeping an eye on our forecast of course hopefully some fog and i know youre talking about the islands. I see them behind you. So the wind speeds have come down great. Thats some good news. It was all about yesterday, but because of the hurricane and strong High Pressure to the north, weve seen this before. They had an offshore breeze and north northeast wind, but wind speeds have come way down, down from about 60, 70 and 50. Now, you can see that its much quieter. But if thats the way it works, right, weve seen that so many times. You get one day of roaring wind, then the next day the pressure gradients are not as tight. 50 on the temps to near 60. We have a good fog bank in place. Focus will be on the tropical moisture here moving in already in the Southern California. Its going to lift northward. I dont think its a factor today, but it may be Going Forward in the next few days here, 60s, 70s, 80s on the temps still near average to a little below. All right. Sallys here. We had an issue on 880 that got better now Mountain View. Yeah southbound 101 connector ramp to southbound 85. That ramp is closed for a deadly crash. And that crash there is blocking that ramp, although 101 is getting by. You cannot get on 85 from 101. In the carpool ramp there. So avoid it. Fire department is on the scene. It could be a while as they do the investigation. The rest of the commute. Okay. We can see that the bay bridge is still okay here westbound as you come up toward the toll plaza 501. Lets go back to the desk. All right, sal, thank you. Well, 36 people now confirm dead in maui from the devastating wildfires still burning this morning in hawaii. At least 271 buildings have been damaged or destroyed and Recovery Efforts on the island continue. Thousands have already evacuated. Thousands more are waiting right now for flights today, say hundreds of families who live there have been displaced and several shelters are filled with people who have no place to go. Now, the primary focus is to save lives and to prevent human suffering and to mitigate great property loss in the Historic Town of lahaina, pine, piles of rubble and debris are scattered everywhere after wildfires roared through that community. There are many Power Outages on the island because of the fires. The Hawaii National guard has been activated. Helicopters are out there searching for people who were left behind in areas that have no power or the roads are inaccessible. Now, maui, of course, was packed with tourists when these fires started. The tough job right now is underway to get as many of those tourists off the island as Amanda Quintana is at sfo right now, where flights for from maui are landing right now. Good morning. Good morning, dave. Yes, there are a handful of flights that will land here at sfo this morning from maui. We have one thats going to land in just a few minutes here, but it was delayed, so we should see it maybe around 510 here. This morning. The airport there in maui, its been packed with travelers trying to get out of there, just trying to get home. Many of the vacationers, theyre in maui. Their hotels, they didnt have power and they were experiencing some of those high winds that were fueling those nearby fires. Hawaiis acting governor actually signed an emergency proclamation to deter tourists from visiting maui. The department of transportation had already been urging visitors to leave and stay away from maui last night. Passengers began landing back here at sfo, leaving behind some of those tragic scenes. Winds were extreme actually towards our entered our trip about monday tuesday to really started picking up and ive been to maui. Thats one of my favorite islands but no you cant change what has happened or you can do just pray for the you know pray for the people. 11,000 people were evacuated from maui yesterday. Air lines are bringing in larger planes and increasing service to get people out of their and home safely. The Hawaii Department of transportation says there will still there were still some empty seats on planes because the fires caused a road closures. But they also had busses helping get people to the airport. Were told 600 people spent the night at Kahului Airport to get on early flights out of there. And theyre expecting about 1500 people to leave maui today and evacuate. So we will be here at sfo trying to talk to some of those passengers as they come back. Hopefully, they were able to get out of maui safely and be happy to be here back home in the bay area, live at sfo. Amanda quintana, ktvu fox two news. All right, thank you, amanda. Now stay with us here on mornings on two for the very latest on the situation in maui and throughout the day. You can go online to ktvu. Com. Here in the bay area, we are monitoring the developing story of a fire at a steel recycler plant near the port of oakland. Taking you out there live right now. You can see the active flames and thick smoke. And because of that smoke, the bay area air Quality Management district issued an air quality advisory. Now theyre worried that the smoke could affect cities, including oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda, even as far south as san jose. But the Environmental Protection agency is at the scene. They say the air quality right now is normal, but they are advising people to shut all their doors and windows as now. The fire started last night at about 530 at schnitzer steel in west oakland. Flames came from a pile of debris that was stored outdoors. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles, especially at nearby jack london square. Oaklands interim fire chief described the fire as stubborn and hard to control. It took hours for crews to finally get a handle on the situation and they needed help. As you can see from fire boats, both from San Francisco and alameda. Its a pretty stubborn fire. Its a very, very large pile of debris. And also the way the pile is positioned on the yard. We werent able to get to the back of it. So thats why it was it was valuable to have the fire boats come because they can pull right up to the dock and hit it from the back. No injuries are reported. Its too soon to know how that fire started, but the pile of debris was much larger than usual because a shredder at the recycling plant broke down several days ago and schnitzer was waiting for repair parts to arrive. And pam, this is at least the third fire at schnitzer steel since 2018. The last one was in june of 2020. It was very similar to what we just saw back in 2021. The steel recycler plant played paid 4. 1 million to settle with the state for illegally releasing Hazardous Waste and harmful emissions into the west oakland community. As part of that settlement, schnitzer installed air pollution control equipment. Oakland as president dave kaval spoke about the fire online, saying the team is still pursuing legal action against that steel company. Now he shared his view of the smoke over the port. The team filed a lawsuit against schnitzer steel back in 2020, claiming the company is causing significant environmental damage in the area. When it was announced three years ago, cavill said the suit was part of the teams efforts to build a ballpark there at howard terminal. Despite the team recently appearing to be fully committed to moving to las vegas. Cavill says that lawsuit is ongoing. Well, a key vote expected later today by the state Public Utilities commission to decide if there should be more self driving taxis on the streets of San Francisco. So now both crews and waymo hope to get approval for around the clock robotaxi rides. If it is approved, it could make San Francisco the first city in the country to have two fleets of Driverless Cars competing for passengers against ride shares and taxis. But critics, including the San Francisco Fire Department, want state regulators to reject the approval because of safety concerns. Some drivers are always trying to beat bay area traffic. One driver in the north bay used a unique way to drive in the carpool lane. Take a look. The driver used a dressed mannequin last week while driving on North Highway 101 near ignacio boulevard in marin county. Very thorough job there. But a chp driver, chp watching the carpool lanes, pulled the driver over when he said something didnt seem right after the officer approached the minivan, she confirmed a mannequin was in the back seat. Pam, you werent fooled. I mean, i might be full driving by. It looks like just somebody sleeping in the back seat. And if you have a minivan, chances are you have a bunch of people in there, right . Yeah it was an idea. No kids. Somebody. Yeah, its interesting. Its funny. Its surprising they got pulled over. Its been tried before. It has chp seen everything . Yeah i believe, but not a bad mannequin, though. Not bad. 50 on the temps. 60 were stuck to cloud cover. Theres just a lot going on. 34 in truckee breaking news, 34 in truckee. Thats cold for august 40th. South lake tahoe mammoth is 44 degrees. A lot of tropical moisture moving into Southern California. Some of that will lift northward. So we get a break from the heat from now, although it does look warmer as we head towards the weekend in early next week, itll all be dependent on how much of this cloud cover makes it, though. A lot of high clouds are on the way. I dont think so much today unless youre in the southern part of our viewing area. But showers possible, especially down towards the monterey peninsula the next few days and also over the sierra the mountain again, forecast models, you can look at four of them and theyll have four Different Solutions on where to take this moisture. But it does look like it wants to favor the sierra and out towards fresno, bakersfield, maybe the monterey peninsula as well. You can see that circulation. Look at tahoe, though, as we head towards friday into the saturday, some of that moisture could sneak back around. Theres going to be a low forming to the west southwest of Central California. That will tap into some of that moisture. We do have drizzle. Theres not a lot, but theres going to be some here. The next few days. Dont think half of will be will get that much. But the key is going to be in the mountains. And how much makes it up here . Its going to be close. And if you get that moisture, yes, itll be that muggy factor which we all love so much, 60s, 70s and 80s on the temps, morning, overcast, drizzle, sunny mild to warm afternoon breeze kicks in once that fog retreats 6070s and 80s not much change through friday does look a little warmer inland going into the weekend but again depends on how much cloud cover we get. All right. Thank you, steve. A deadly shootout at a park in East Palo Alto. Coming up, the reaction from the community after authorities announced four people are now facing charges for the killing and the continuing search in the Santa Cruz Mountains for a missing teenager will tell you the stretch of road investigators are focused on. Where there is an active investigation at this point, the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office says it is investigating this as a possible murder suicide. The body of a missing person from Santa Clara County was found in the delta. Authorities pulled a submerged vehicle from the delta near stockton with the body inside the car. The name of that missing person has not been released, but police say its not clear if the death was accidental or if it will be investigated as a homicide. This all started after people reported seeing five submerged vehicles in the water. Our time is 514. The search continues for a missing teenager from saratoga after her car was found almost a month after she disappeared. The 2019 honda of 17 year old Katie Schneider was found monday as she was reported missing back on july fifth. The car was on highway 35, a mile east of Castle Rock State Park in los gatos. Thats where investigators are focusing now. The Saratoga City Council is very concerned about the disappearance of this teenager. Any time that a child or a young person disappears. It just breaks our heart. I mean, many of us have children and mine are all grown now. But it just breaks our heart. And so everybodys pulling together and katies mother used social media to thank people for their love and for their support. Volunteers are handing out fliers. Theyre putting up posters hoping that Katie Schneider will be home soon. Our time is 515. A man from utah accused of making threats against President Biden was shot and killed by fbi agents. It happened just hours before the president touched down in Salt Lake City. The fbi was trying to serve a warrant on the home of Craig Robertson when that shooting occurred. Court documents allege that robertson referenced a president ial assassination and also threatened attorney general merrick garland. President biden is wrapping up his west coast trip in utah today. This comes after an earlier stop in new mexico where he touted his Climate Change and environmental agenda. The president talked about the Inflation Reduction Act that he signed last year. The white house says the legislation moves the country away from fossil fuels towards cleaner technology. But republican lawmakers say that hurts the economy. Its not going to help americans have cheap and readily available energy. And that is the number one thing we need if were going to break this crazy inflation brought to us by joe biden as we know, polls dont show everything Consumer Confidence is up. And so when you see unemployment is lower than for percent, that has been steady for some time. Now. The president is set to give a speech later today at the Va Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Our time is 517. Special counsel jack smith obtained a search warrant for former president trumps twitter account earlier this year. Thats according to newly released court documents. The warrant was related to smiths investigation into trumps alleged interference in the 2020 election. It was for evidence of criminal offenses. Now twitter at first resisted complying with that search warrant that led to a federal judge holding the company in contempt and ordering it to pay a 350,000 fine. The twitter now known as x, eventually complied with that warrant, but donald trump says he was not aware of it. San jose state Assembly Member ash kalra has endorsed congresswoman barbara lee for the us senate. Colorado is the chair of the Assembly Progressive caucus. Other endorsements include state senator nancy skinner, Assembly Member mia banta and mayors london breed and xiang tao. Now the Assembly Member released a statement along with his endorsement, saying in part, quote, barbara lee is a consistent and effective progressive who has the experience needed to get things done in the senate on urgent priorities like creating Affordable Housing and supporting the middle class. All right. Our time is 518. Back to Steve Paulson. Any concerns about our weather for this thursday morning . Im always concerned, dave. Yeah, not in the immediate term, maybe in the long term here because theres a lot of tropical clouds coming into the south, Southern California actually having to earn their pay. This morning here in august because theres a lot of activity. Some of that will lift northward. But but we get a break from the heat for a couple of days, but it does look like it might return inland as we head towards the weekend, mainly sunday, monday, lots going to depend on how many of the clouds make it. If they do, the humidity factor goes up. Scattered showers, high base possible mainly southward over the sierra. You can see the moisture. Now, again, another forecast model may not do this. It just depends on which one you believe in. But you can see towards the sierra sacramento valley, san joaquin, down towards Santa Clara Valley and monterey peninsula, looks to be the focus for now up in the mountains friday afternoon, some of that could easily drift back towards us if our lows start to come up and you feel that humidity factor, then you can look out the window and oh, those are those clouds. Well not only do we have the higher clouds possible, but the low clouds are in place along with drizzle. I dont think there will be those kind of hefty totals, but well get some drizzle and the amount of moisture is starting to favor the sierra and maybe coming back towards us is also on the increase. So 60, 70 anywhere near the water, inland temps will be in the 80s morning overcast pretty good fog bank out there. Sunny milder maybe a few high clouds. Southern part of the viewing area later today. More likely it will be tonight. Tomorrow, 6070s, 80s, always a tricky call. And you get this tropical moisture. My plans are weather friday and again as we head to sunday monday, thursday. All right. See time is 519. New information about inflation expected later this morning. Good morning, dave. Good morning, dave. Well, if you are traveling in this area, if you are waking up, you are smelling the smoke, seeing those plumes. Were showing you live pictures right now. This is the Vantage Point near Middle Harbor road, just behind schnitzer steel plant. And you can see crews still on scene battling this fire that is contained to one massive pile of steel debris. We are talking more than 12 hours or so that this fire has been burning. Officials say this is an extremely large pile of steel and whatever is burning is at the core of this pile. And its been very hard to reach by now. Youre seeing the smoke. You can smell it now despite whats filling the air fire Officials Say there is no threat to the public. So we sent out an ac alert, which is Alameda County alert, telling people to close all their windows and doors just as a precaution. The epa is here. Theyve done some some air monitoring as well as our hazmat team, all air quality is within normal limits right now. And as it is a large plume of smoke, but its dissipating as it leaves the yard. Now, the smoke is expected to impact cities like oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda and even as far south as san jose. Again, the Environmental Protection agency is at the scene and says the air quality is normal but advises people to shut all doors and windows if they are in the immediate area or if they see and smell the smoke. Now, this fire started last night at about 530 at signature steel. So it is still unclear what caused the fire, but we know the flames came from a pile of debris that was stored outdoors. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles and can still be seen for miles, especially at the nearby jack london square. Now, it took hours for crews to get a handle on the situation again. They say that this has been contained to one large pile of steel debris. Again, a lot of people wanting to know how this all started. But again, epa still on scene. Oakland fire crews on scene. We even know that this fire is being attacked with boats as well. So still expecting to hear more from police as the morning rather. Theyre still expecting to hear more from fire officials as the morning progresses. Well send it back to you in the studio. All right, dave, before you go, i know youve been looking into the past history of schnitzer steel. Have there been any problems for them . Well, we know that this is about the third fire since 2018. And the last one we saw was in june of 2020 to a very similar situation to what were seeing this morning and last night. Now, back in 2021, the steel plant recycling paid about 4. 1 million to settle with the state for, quote, illegally releasing Hazardous Waste and harmful emissions into west oakland. Now, as part of that agreement, schnitzer installed air pollution control equipment. Were still waiting to hear from the company, but we know they are cooperating with fire officials as well as the epa. We, of course, will continue to monitor this situation as it continues throughout the morning. Were live in west oakland this morning. Dave, detailing ktvu fox two news. Dave, thank you. And if you want to follow the progress of the firefighters on battling that fire, were streaming it live on our website. You can find it right on the home page at ktvu. Com. Our times five 3436 people have now died following the devastating wildfires that swept through lahaina in hawaii tuesday night. But search and rescue workers are warning the number of victims could go up even more. This is video from a helicopter flying above lahaina yesterday afternoon. Block after block, nothing but rubble. Now close to 300 homes and businesses are damaged or destroyed. Fema reports more than 70,000 residents went to evacuate centers. I think we had 2100 people in our Maui High School evacuation point. And that included people that had just flown into maui, caught off the plane and it was like, welcome to maui. You have to go to an Evacuation Center until we can get you out of here. Now, the airlines and workers at the maui airport were working hard to get people off the island. State transportation Officials Say at least 11,000 people evacuated from the island yesterday. Weve been told as many as 600 people spent the night at the airport to catch a flight out. Just the fact that it was spreading so fast and we didnt really know what was going to happen. And then, of course, like losing your stuff and not really knowing, you know, where youre going to go for the night. Luckily, i had someone that i could stay with if it werent for them. I dont know where i would have ended up. Just its a scary to see a big wildfire just kind of coming your way right now at this moment. There are four flights in the air flying from maui to sfo in San Francisco. Two flights have already landed this morning. Were going to bring you live reports from sfo all morning long as that Mass Evacuation from maui continues. Four men are facing charges connected to a shootout in an East Palo Alto park last year. One man was killed, but the people arrested will not face murder charges now. Instead the San Mateo County District Attorney says they will face a total of 25 felony charges, including assault with a Deadly Weapon. And discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. We cannot show who started the firing of the weapons, who acted in self defense and who was the aggressor. And we have to be able to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. And thats why we do not have that. As to mr. Fields, the person who was murdered out there on that day, five adults were shot. One man, 34 year old ralph fields, junior and cousin of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver davante adams, died in that shooting. At least 33 rounds were fired during the shootout. All of it happened right in front of children and families who were sent running for safety. Thats not going to be tolerated in East Palo Alto. And so the community has stood up. They have both been vocal and they have submitted their information privately and confidentially to the Police Department. And so thats what were going to continue to do is community. Now, the da also says three of the four suspects were already in jail for other crimes when they were charged in this case, the owner of a Security Service company is sharing his concerns after two of his guards were involved in shootings. Now jim viera is ceo of Kingdom Group protective services. Back in april, one of his guards shot and killed a shoplifting suspect , banco brown, at a walgreens in San Francisco. The second shooting happened monday night. One of vieiras guards shot and wounded a robbery suspect at the home depot in san carlos. It is a huge responsibility when you put a gun in a persons hand to expect them to respond. Perfect every time. Viera says the state needs to allow guards to use less lethal weapons other than tasers, which require you to be very close to the suspect. Viera also says the two incidents are proof that criminals will steal even in the presence of guards. Today is the first day of school for 100,000 students across the bay area. That includes San Ramon Valley unified, mount diablo unified and san jose, the bay areas largest district. San francisco wont start until next wednesday. Our time is 539 in the San Jose Unified School District School starts today and a lot of students will be better prepared thanks to san jose firefighters, the firefighters handed out new backpacks filled with supplies at washington elementary. This is the third year firefighters have supported students at that school. They purchased backpacks that include the logos of firefighter orders that just might inspire some of the students. Kids look up to firefighters, and i know were role models to them, and maybe we can inspire them one day to be a firefighter. Two in their community and help out the community they grew up in this years. San jose firefighter purchased and donated 1000 backpacks for the students. It is 539. The secret service has a little known division created to help protect all americans in public situations, and the students are going back to classes. The National Threat Assessment Center is working with School Districts to keep everybody on campuses safe. The plan is to make sure School Districts have the knowledge and resources they need to keep their campus safe. So officials at the center are providing funding and training that could stop a School Shooting or have everybody know what to do if there is a possibility of a gunman on the campus. They are always intervention points. And why . Because students exhibit concerning behavior in the months, sometimes years leading up to their attacks. Now, Officials Say their goal is to get schools to the point where the staff and the students can recognize a possible threat before it happens. And then School Officials can take action to remove the student, the staff or faculty member before theres violence on campus. But 540 is the time i started to say, yeah, its 540, its 40 oh mornings flying by. It is. Its 540. Yeah. Thank you, steve. Thank you, pamela. 5060 on the temps because we have a low cloud deck and a little drizzle out there. But truckee briefly at 501 drop to 34 degrees now 37 South Lake Tahoe is close at 40. Mammoth still showing 43 degrees. Its all about tropical moisture. The remains of what was tropical system eugene now falling apart, but lifting northward, august, september, time to start looking for that. Not a lot of rain whether theres been a few. Thereve been a few couple 100 to 1. 05 at san onofre reported by the National Weather service in san diego. Higher clouds are possible over the next couple of days, maybe even into the weekend. If you get that, if we all get that, then the humidity factor goes up. Possibility of scattered showers more towards monterey and also over the sierra. So for us today, i think its more about just the low cloud deck, but something to watch here. Watch the moisture lifting northward. Now, again, it wont be until late this evening, overnight into tomorrow. This would have a huge impact on the lows if it makes it, theyll really be held up if we get enough of that cloud cover to come in, therell be a couple of surges. Thats the next one. Thats the one, i think, in the mountains in the sierra. The one to watch. Watch the flow around that. You right back towards us. The reason being theres an area of low pressure forming off the Central California coast. The flow around that is counterclockwise. So if it taps into that moisture easily, bring it back. Not only that, we have drizzle, these are some i think, hefty totals being forecast, but i think the theme is more of the idea, not the totals that theres going to be some local drizzle nights and mornings here. But for the mountains, i would be keeping an eye on things here over the next couple of days. If youre going up to tahoe, truckee or anywhere up in the sierra, probably nothing for us except more show than goes. Some cloud cover is possible. But even out to the sacramento valley, if some of that moisture wraps back around from the sierra and goes east to west towards us, morning overcast, drizzle and these little breeze will be developing later today. But sunny, mild, warm, could be a few high clouds late, especially south fog, drizzle, sunny breezy 6070s and 80s on the temps a little cooler friday then we start to see some maybe some cloud cover and inland temps will bounce back up into the 90s. Thank you steve. It is not good news for downtown oakland and San Francisco and their Recovery Efforts from the pandemic coming up, the new numbers that show the bay area is lagging behind the rest of the country. And in lake tahoe, leaders from california and nevada gathering now. Coming up, details on the effort to protect the basin subways now slicing their deli meats fresh. Thats why the new titan turkey is proferred by this football pro. And proferred by this football pro who actually uses her feet. And if we profer it, we know youll prefer it too. I use my feet. Have you seen me scramble . Dianne feinstein, californias senior senator. The senator is still at her home in San Francisco, though. On tuesday, she fell at her home and was taken to the hospital. Senator feinstein is the oldest member of the us senate. Last february, she contracted shingles. She missed several votes during the three months she was out by and revved up the calls by members of both Political Parties for her to step down. But experts say its not just her age that should be looked at. You can have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail, and then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. And senator feinstein has been adamant that she will serve her full term, which expires in january of 2025. Now senator feinstein was unable to attend the lake tahoe summit, but leaders from california and nevada gathered there to discuss ways to protect the basin. Feinstein helped launch that annual event back in 1997. This is the 27th year for the summit, which brings together lawmakers from both Political Parties to address the threats facing lake tahoe that includes an increase in trash traffic and air pollution. Nevadas governor said its important to set aside politics to protect the region that is vital to both states. Well, i think its important for you to hear some very important points today on behalf of the state of nevada to include the state of california, because as this is all about partnership, right. Its about bipartisan partnership. And thats the complete intent of what were trying to achieve to ensure that we maintain tahoe into the future for todays generation and future generations. Thank you, senator padilla. Former House Speaker nancy pelosi was the keynote speaker. The summit comes amid a push to extend a federal program called the lake tahoe restoration act that provides money for environmental projects and is set to expire next year. Our time now. 548 well, today, the hollywood strike will be here in the bay area, sagaftra, the Union Representing actors whove been on strike for weeks will hold a rally in oakland at 1130 this morning. Itll be right in front of the Alameda Labor Council offices. The sagaftra strike is part of what is crippling tv and movie production right now. Performer writers and studios havent reached an agreement on working conditions, pay and the future use of Artificial Intelligence in projects. The number of people applying for a jobless benefits rose last week, but economists say it still signals a strong labor market. Also just released this morning, the Consumer Price index rose 0. 2 in july, which is exactly what was predicted. The annual rate is 3. 2 from a year ago. An economists say that shows inflation is loosening its grip on the country. But one troubling element is gas prices. They have been steadily increasing in recent weeks. The very demographic groups that youre talking about, for example, hispanic voters and in many cases, black voters who who voted overwhelmingly for biden but are now feeling the financial squeeze that his policies have put on their back. Inflation is now as low as point in two years. In fact, we have the lowest rate of inflation among the worlds major economies. President biden has been traveling across the country touting what he calls bidens mix. The administration and his Reelection Campaign are trying to turn a political weakness into a strength. All right, pam, time is now 550. Were going right back to sal. Youve been busy this morning. A lot happening on the roads. Yeah and right now we do see some of the major commutes getting a little bit more crowded. Lets go out and take a look at the bay bridge. I want to show it to you here westbound. You can see that traffic is moving along okay with no major issues, but people are beginning to arrive. San mateo bridge looks fine. If youre driving in the south bay, we have that one deadly crash southbound 101 at 85 hov ramp ramp. But its not affecting the freeway or 85, just that particular ramp as they finish up their investigation there. 550. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. Sal. Thank you, sir. We have a pretty good fog bank in place for us. We are now watching the moisture streaming into Southern California. Also into arizona. Southern nevada as well. Theres been a little bit of activity down there. Not a lot, but a couple one hundredths to about a 0. 05. The key, though, is how far north of this moisture goes. We get a break from the heat, although it looks like it could come back sunday, monday here, high clouds possible, probably not enough today. More likely to be late tonight, tomorrow, if it does make it, then the humidity factor goes will be that muggy factory gift from the tropical clouds. Possible scattered showers mainly south and also over the sierra. The moisture again, another forecast model may not do this or may be more bullish. It just depends on. But the theme is cloud covers on the way. Probably a couple impulses rotating through. The one for the mountains is the one i think is the one to keep an eye on as we go into friday night and saturday and again sunday night, monday. The reason why theyre coming off the mountain, a low is forming off the Central California coast that will tap into that moisture. But again, its where the placement is farther west, farther south may not be a factor, otherwise, it could be a direct, direct line right into us along with the drizzle. So well have a combination of low clouds that will be the main factor for today. But watch how the mountain starts to pick up a little bit. Truckee, though, by the way, dropped a 34 degrees this morning. But with cloud cover on the way, theyre going to have warmer lows in the next couple of mornings here. But still cold in the mountains here for early august. No doubt about it. Morning overcast, drizzle, a little bit of a breeze, sunny, mild to warm, 60s, 70s, 80s, inland temps after tomorrow are set to start to get back into the 90s. A lot that will be dependent on how much cloud cover we get all right. Thank you, thomas. 552. Were now getting new views from the sky of the tragic fire destruction on maui. Were live at sfo this morning, hearing from people evacuating the island of maui and a massive plume of smoke into the sky in the east bay. Look at your tv screen. You have details of the fire still burning near the port of oakland this morning from ktvu fox two news. This is mornings on two. Well, good morning to you. Thank you for joining us. Welcome to mornings on two. Im dave clark. Good morning. Im pam cook thursday morning august 10th, also known as friday eve friday eve. So a lot of people heading to getting a applause from tim. Low clouds in place. Plenty to go around here. Drizzle as well. 50 on the temps to 60. Some higher clouds might play into our weather. Probably more so late tonight. Tomorrow and again on parts of the weekend. Its just a its a broad brush for now. Its really tough to pinpoint that. But for today 60s, 70s and 80s, all right. Sal is here still Mountain Views that better worse same what well that is still there although its not causing a big traffic jam there. Just doing an investigation. And what steves talking about is southbound 101 on the hov lane ramp to 85. That ramp is shut down. However, the rest of the freeway is open and theres not a big delay at the moment. Theyre just doing an investigation from an earlier deadly crash. Lets go to the bay bridge. Theres a small delay building here. No major issues. Also the san mateo bridge looks still pretty good, getting out to the peninsula at 601. Lets get back to the desk. All right, sal, thank you. Well, this morning, the death toll in hawaii from those destructive wildfires has been going up. Now officials in maui say 36 people have died in those fires and the number is expected to go up as the rescue efforts are underway. Yeah, there are more than one fire there. Theyre starting to get under control. But now comes the massive task of sifting through extensive damage. Heartbreaking to see. Overnight, we learned that in addition to the 36 deaths, more than 270 homes and businesses are damaged or destroyed. That includes most of the town of historic lahaina. Local state and federal Officials Say aid is starting to arrive there in hawaii. I know that the president is assessing the possibility, and i hope that that comes soon, a declaration of a national disaster. So that there can be more federal resources brought to bear. People who have had vacant homes or vacation rentals. I know people from hawaii come together strong when disasters like this. The governor is asking if people have that ability on maui to help share their homes with with others who are in dire straits right now. That would be greatly appreciated. President biden ordered all available federal assets to help with the response. He said the Hawaii National guard is using firefighting helicopters to help as well. Were told the helicopters dropped about 150,000 gallons of water over those fires yesterday. Well along with those helicopters fighting the fires, were also getting the first looks at the damage in lahaina from the sky. Andre senior here now with more on that. Andre well, good morning to you, dave. Take a look at the scene you see right here behind me. Many of these buildings once stood in lahaina. They are now gone. It is one of hawaiis most historic sights and was once the capital of the hawaiian kingdom. But now the images are bringing back memories of destructive wildfires here in california. So we expected to see some structures burned and so forth and some damage. But we were not we were not prepared for what we saw. What we saw looked like an area that had been bombed and burned by in a war zone. Well, much of the historic front street, it is now gone, as well as Historic Buildings dating back to both the kingdom of hawaii and some of the first missionary in whalers to come there. On top of being historic , it was also a bustling tourist area with restaurants, luaus and shops. All those that were working in those retail areas and restaurants and so forth. Theres no business anymore. This will be a devastating effect, not just on maui, but the whole state economy. Right in the lahaina harbor, the courthouse house in there, the mission home, all the church, all the places that are tourist, areas that are hawaiian history are gone and that cant be replaced. Yeah, pretty sad images coming out of that area. Thousands of people still evacuated this morning looking for help right now while aid is on the way. Experts say its particularly difficult to get resources to maui. Unlike california, where we can rely upon mutual aid from other states and other counties. Were talking about an island trying to get resources from other islands makes it difficult. Roads are impassable, power lines are down, cell communication is hampered. Its all going to make this a very difficult recovery wise. Lieutenant governor said overnight that its too early to know how long it will be until people can return to whats left of their homes. But said theyre already expecting the recovery to take years. Over 11,000 people jumped onto flights to leave maui as those fires forced evacuations. And were hearing harrowing stories now for people still trying to escape the island. Lets turn things now to Amanda Quintana, whos live at San Francisco International Airport with people who are just landing from the island this morning. Amanda yes, well, andre, theres a handful of flights that land here at sfo this morning from maui and the maui airport. It was packed with travelers trying to get out, trying to evacuate maui. I know that we had many vacationers there who didnt even have power as they were there when i was at the airport yesterday, there were still families trying to go on their summer family vacation, headed to maui. But now a lot of those people are going to be heading back home this morning. Theyve been experiencing those high winds that fueled those nearby fires. Hawaiis acting governor signed an emergency proclamation to deter tourists from visiting maui. The department of transport had already been urging visitors to leave and stay away from maui last night, passengers began landing back here at sfo, leaving behind some of those tragic scenes. Winds were extreme actually towards our ended our trip about monday, tuesday, they really started picking up and ive been on maui thats one of my favorite islands. But no you cant change what has happened or you can do just pray for the you know pray for the people a 11,000 people evacuated from maui yesterday. Airlines are bringing in larger planes and increased service to get people out of their and home safely. The Hawaii Department of transportation says there were still some empty seats on planes, though, because the fires caused road closures that prevented passengers from getting to the airport. But busses are helping to get people through. Were told 600 people spent the night at Kahului Airport to get on early flights to get out of there. About 1500 people are expected to leave maui today. Some of those flights coming here to sfo. So well be catching up with some of those passengers as they land here and im sure have some pretty scary stories about trying to go on vacation and then experience all of this and trying to get back home safely. Live at sfo, Amanda Quintana, ktvu, fox two news. Amanda, thank you. And make sure you stay right here with us on mornings on two for the very latest on that situation in maui and throughout the day. You can go online at ktvb. Com. We are also keeping an eye on a developing story here in oakland. Fire at a steel recycling plant right near the port of oakland. Heres the overhead shot of that, the dense smoke in the bay area has prompted the bay area air Quality Management district to issue an air quality advisory. Officials are worried that the smoke could affect oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda. Even as far south of san jose. The Environmental Protection agency is there at the scene. They say the air quality at this point is normal , but they are keeping an eye on that and they are advising people shut your windows and doors. I want to take you live this morning now to how that fire looks right now. It started last night about 530 at schnitzer steel in west oakland. Flames came from a pile of debris that was stored outside. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles, especially there at nearby jack london square. Oaklands interim fire chief described the fire, a stubborn and hard to control. It took hours for crews to finally get a handle on the situation and they needed help from both San Francisco and alameda. Fire boats. All right. Our time is 608. Another news, a key vote expected later today by the state Public Utilities commission to decide if there should be more self driving taxis on San Francisco streets. Both crews and waymo hoping to get approval for around the clock robotaxi rides. If it is approved, it could make San Francisco the first city in america to have two fleets of Driverless Cars competing for passengers against rideshares and taxis. But critics, including the San Francisco Fire Department, want state regulators to reject that approval because of safety concerns. A new report shows downtown San Francisco came in last in a survey of how well cities are recovering from the pandemic. Researchers compared individual cell phone numbers used in the downtown areas of 63 us and canadian cities in 2019. Against this year, the university of toronto study found San Francisco cell phone use now just one third of what it was in 2019. Oakland cell phone use is just half of what it was. The san jose about three quarters. El paso, fresno, bakersfield and Salt Lake City are all higher now than they were before the pandemic. Interesting some of the spots where people have perhaps moved, right. Relocated businesses. All right. Our time is 610. Were going right to sal, whos been very busy since you walked in the building. So yeah, and things are beginning to calm down a little bit. Speaking of San Francisco, so the traffic getting there this morning is moderate. We do have some slowing here at the toll plaza. Itll be interesting to see what happens in fall and or the fall season in september. Well see if we have more of a backup this morning. This is a little lighter than usual. If we were to go back to 2019 at this time, wed see a full toll plaza. So obviously things have changed. Everyone knows it, but today it is moderate. And you can see san mateo bridge westbound 92 getting out to the high rise. Thats moderately heavy as well. We dont have a lot of slowing southbound 101. Looks okay. Theyre still doing an investigation of a crash on the carpool lane from 101 to 85. Thats not affecting a lot of drivers at the moment. The south bay commute northbound 101 is looking good, 85 and 101. All getting up to sunnyvale or cupertino. I think were off to a nice start that way. 611 lets get back to the desk. Thank you, sal. With the warmest part of summer expected to arrive soon, parts of california already preparing for the possibility of a wet winter. Well tell you whats being done to make sure we dont see more levee breaks this year. And the leader of a church based around magic mushrooms is defending his organization while he says using psychedelics is part of his religion Katie Schneiders, 2019. Honda was found monday. She was every time that a child or a young person disappears. It just breaks our heart. I mean, many of us have children and mine are all grown now, but it just breaks our heart. And so everybodys pulling together and katies mother is using social media to say thank you to people for all of their love and support. Volunteers are handing out fliers, putting up posters, hoping to bring Katie Schneider home soon. President biden is wrapping up his west coast trip in utah today. This comes after an earlier stop in new mexico where he touted his Climate Change and environmental agenda. The president talked about the Inflation Reduction Act. He signed last year. The white house says the legislation moves the country away from fossil fuels to cleaner technology. But republican lawmakers say that hurts the economy. Its not going to help americans have cheap and readily available energy. And that is the number one thing we need if were going to break this crazy inflation brought to us by joe biden as we know, polls dont show everything. Consumer confidence is up and so when you see unemployment is lower than 4, that has been steady for some time. The order will also suspend many environmental laws to make repairing damage. Levees happen faster. There is a church in the bay area that has magic mushrooms as part of its faith. Now we are hearing from the head of that group any time that youre consuming any amount of mushrooms, youre connecting with your soul. In the work that i do, i do really high dose work. And at those levels, you get what can only be described as spiritual visions. Dave hodges is the pastor of the side door church. He has locations in San Francisco and oakland. He practices what he calls a non denominational religion, the church of ambrosia. The goal is safe access and use of hallucinogenic plants such as certain mushrooms. My most spiritual experience that i talk about is one where i was ripped out of my body, went through heaven, and everything in between. He says more than 90,000 people are members of his church. He is still battling oakland police, which raided his facility back in 2020 and seized 200,000 worth of cannabis. Psychedelic mushrooms and cash. Police say his church was operating as a dispensary without a legal permit. All right. Our time is 617. Well help you get to where you need to go. Sal has the latest on the commute. Sal. All right, dave and pam, good morning to you once again. We do look at the main commute into San Francisco and ill show it to you now. Its only backed up to about the end of the parking lot on westbound 80 here at the toll plaza. Its a little slow on the bridge itself. We dont see anything major. I think these major commute or these bridge commutes, i should say, are still pretty good. You can still get out there and get ahead of the crowd there. Still clearing a crash on southbound 101 at 85, but its only affecting the diamond lane ramp. The rest of the freeway is okay there in fact, getting into the west valley, getting into sunnyvale, cupertino and san jose still looks good. And as i just kind of scroll along the map, theres very little red here. And that inner core of the east bay. So we still have a pretty good time to get out there before the main crowd does. At 618. Lets bring steve back with todays forecast. Sal thank you. Temperatures are very similar here due to the cloud cover or mean close some locations are clear but livermore is 57. Half moon bay is 57. Fairfield is 57. So san carlos. So theres just not much of a spread on these temps, although its cold in the mountains. Look at that truckee , south, lake tahoe and mammoth are all in the 30s. Truckee briefly dropped to 34. Now 37 focus will be on the tropical moisture which is moving into Southern California. We get a break from the heat for now. Looks like some of it will start to return for inland areas over the weekend as temps jump up. A lot will be dependent on how much cloud cover we get, though, tends to be more towards maybe the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains and monterey peninsula, also up into the sierra and out towards the sacramento San Joaquin Valley. But theres plenty there. And if it makes it, you can see right there for the mountains that could certainly add some thunderstorm mix into the weekend forecast, drizzle as well for us. We have plenty to go around. Not this. I dont think well get these hefty totals, but you get the idea theres going to be some night morning drizzle. But take a look at the mountains. Things are beginning to juice up a little bit. Some of that moisture could backtrack and head over towards us again. I think well get more just clouds, anything else but 60, 70, anywhere near the water, a pretty good fog back out there. Some local drizzle, sunny, mild to warm. Some higher clouds are possible, but not until later, i would think, towards the Santa Clara Valley. By this evening. Tomorrow will be the key. See if we get some of that. And again, i think late sunday into monday, inland temps bumping up. But again, depends on how much cloud cover we get pam. All right. Thank you, steve. It is the first day of school for about 100,000 students across the bay area. Well tell you whats in store as kids return to the classroom. Try the roast beef or pastrami french dips today only at togos signed california senior senator. The senator still at her San Francisco home this morning. Now on tuesday, she was taken to the hospital after she fell in her home. Senator feinstein is the oldest person currently serving in the us senate. Last february, she contracted shingles and missed several votes during the three months she was not working, and that wrapped up the calls by members of both parties for her to step down. Experts say its not just her age that should be considered. You can have a perfectly functioning mind and a body that begins to fail, and then the reverse can also happen. So theres lots of variability that exists in the world of aging. Other members of feinsteins party are defending her, saying her role in the Judiciary Committee would be hard to fill if she steps down. Senator feinstein has been adamant that she will serve her full term, which expires in january of 2025. Sen feinstein was unable to attend the lake tahoe summit. Leaders from california and nevada did gather there to discuss ways to protect the basin. Now, feinstein helped launch that annual event back in 1997. Now the summit brings together lawmakers from both Political Parties to address the threats facing lake tahoe. That includes an increase in trash traffic and air pollution. Nevadas governor says its important to set aside politics to protect the region that is vital to both states. But i think its important for you to hear some very important points today on behalf of the state of nevada to include the state of california, because this is all about partnership, right . Its about bipartisan partnership. And thats the complete intent of what were trying to achieve to ensure that we maintain tahoe into the future for todays generation and future generations. Thank you, senator padilla, former House Speaker nancy pelosi was the keynote speaker. The summit comes amid a push to extend a federal program called the lake tahoe restoration act. It provides money for environmental projects and is set to expire next year as the number of covid cases here in california rising, as officials report a big increase in the number of positive test results. Information from walgreen, information from walgreens shows 48 Positivity Rate of covid tests conducted in Walgreens Stores around the around the state. The highest one week figure since january. And its almost double the 27 rate reported in june. A new variant now makes up a large number of covid cases here in the us, but the white house has not issued a statement that prompts concern. Now, according to the cdc, the new variant five makes up about 18 of infections. Nation wide. Doctors say the new strain is more contagious and expects that number to rise quickly. That one appears to be more infectious, meaning people are more likely to get it. This is likely based on on a combination of summertime and people are getting together, travel l a lot of engagement. The cdc says it will issue recommendations for a new covid booster ahead of the winter surge. The cost of a popular streaming bundle is going up. We have the latest on the efforts to get people off the island from ktvu fox two news this is mornings on two as we take you live to the opening bell in the new york stock exchange. The latest report on inflation was just released this morning. The Consumer Price index shows inflation. The rate was up slightly in july. The annual rate is less than expected as that bell rings alive. That is sending the markets higher. The dow jones jumped on that news set to open up about 200 points. Well get to the numbers in just a moment. Thank you for waking up with us here on mornings on two. Im pam cook. And good morning. Im dave clark. It is thursday. It is friday eve. Friday eve. Its august 11th. Steve is right there. Hey, steve, its breezy outside still overcast. You step out on the parapet. I was out there, snuck out. I could have stayed out there. Thank you, sir. All right. Do we do have some breaks in the cloud cover . But theres plenty of low clouds to go around. A little bit more, i think we had yesterday the key, though, for the forecast Going Forward here is how are we going to get any of these tropical clouds theyre visiting Southern California, Central California and starting to move off i5. Well, coalinga near paso robles as well, maybe moving into the Santa Clara Valley. Thatll be later today. Areas to the north. You dont have to worry about it for now, maybe later. But 60s, 70s and 80s on those temps. All right, sal is here. Where are we going this time . Bay bridge toll plaza somewhere else. Were going to start in richmond. Steve at the Richmond Bridge toll plaza and show you the traffic is moving. Okay. If you are driving on westbound 580, theres a little bit of a backup at the toll plaza with no major issues right now. If you are driving to the contra costa commute, which you can see how we four is a little bit slow. Southbound 680 concord to walnut creek looks good, but westbound highway four is slow and at the bay bridge toll plaza we have a backup that extends beyond the 880 overcrossing at 631. Lets get back to the desk. All right. Thank you, sal. Well, were still watching the big plumes of smoke in oakland coming from a steel recycling plant near the port of oakland that was on fire. Its still burning, but the fire is contained, according to fire officials. And air quality advisory is still in effect. Dave lang, youre near schnitzer steel right now in west oakland. So whats the very latest . Whats happening out there now . Good morning, dave. Were near Middle Harbor road. This is near third street on the overpass. And theres been a wind shift. So were getting bombarded with that heavy plume of smoke. You can actually see a flare up right now. Crews they are still working on this giant steel debris fire. Were talking 30, 18 hours. You can see the flames shooting up from the middle portion of this debris pile. And like you said, the air quality advisory remains in effect because that smoke continues to billow from that large pile of steel debris. And as i said, crews, they continue to attack this. There are fire crews on scene as well as claw cranes working to pull pieces of that steel, moving into a secondary location. And as theyre pulling it up, the fire hose is working to drench that. So a lot of what theyre pulling up is on fire. And again, a very stubborn fire, according to firefighter. Heres what we know. The fire broke out at schnitzer steel recycling yard on embarcadero west around 530 wednesday. Since then, large plumes of smoke have been filling the air. It can be seen and smelt in cities across the bay area, including oakland, san leandro, fremont and alameda and even as far south as san jose. Now, the Environmental Protection agency is at the scene and says despite what were seeing and smelling the air quality is normal. The oakland Fire Department says the facility shredder is down and thats whats allowed this large steel pile of debris to get so large. Again, fire officials telling ktvu there is nothing toxic in that billowing smoke. Its a normal combustible material right now. Thats what we found with the pieces that weve been able to look at. Theres nothing in there that that set our monitors off to say that its any kind of, you know, anything thats going to harm the general public. So thats why we did the air monitoring, everything was within normal limits. And right now well just have normal combustibles. And in the past 30 minutes or so, in the past 30 minutes or so, weve heard at least two loud booms. Unclear if theres something even further combustible inside that large pile of debris. But again, firefighters saying whats making this so difficult is how large this pile is and getting to the center of that large pile. Now, again, firefighters, as they continue to work and try to knock down this fire again, that air quality check remains in effect. Again, firefighters saying there is no threat to your breathing. But if you are breathing this in or you are seeing it in your home, you are advised to keep your doors closed and your windows up. So has any new information becomes available . We will bring it to you. Thats a very latest from west oakland. Dave ktvu fox two news. All right. Thank you, dave. Well, the latest numbers from hawaii show at least 36 people have died in the wildfires burning on maui. Theres little bit of good news for the firefighters today who may get some help from the weather. The powerful winds that have been pushing the flames across the island are expected to decrease. That will help crews gain ground against the three separate fires that are burning now on the island. Two of the fires are 60 contained as of this morning. But entire neighborhoods and, of course, the Historic Town of lahaina have been turned to ashes. People who live there cannot believe what theyve seen. All right. Time is 635. Officials now discouraging all travel to maui except for people whove been away and they want to go back to see if their home is still standing. They are encouraging tourists to leave maui. They want to make sure people who live there have places to stay as well as food and water as well as counseling services. The state transportation director says most tourists understand theyve been willing to stay at the maui airport so they can evacuate as quickly as possible. We got about a little over 11,000 travelers out of maui. If we add in the airline personnel, 11,400 or so. Alaska delta, united and american have increased capacity by bringing in larger, larger planes to ensure we get more seats, to get more people off the island. Southwest has dropped their their fares and increase their service. Were going to have another capacity of another 2000 or so Seats Available for the about 1500 passengers that we expect to want to leave the islands. And most of the tourists say they had never considered a wildfire would make it hard for them to get to the airport and get off the island. Experts say Climate Change is fueling conditions that are driving the devastating wildfires in hawaii. Hotter conditions, drier conditions, more variable rainfall. Its only going to exacerbate the problem. But the good news in the sense of the fuel problem is that thats within our control right now. Scientists say the combination of high winds, dry vegetation and drought are making extreme events like severe wildfire on a Tropical Island more common. So you have dry vegetation. That is when theres a spark, its easier for that vegetation to ignite and for the wildfire to spread Climate Change in many parts of the world is increasing. Increasing vegetation, dryness in in in large part because as temperatures are hotter in some cases because precipitation patterns are changing, scientists think Climate Change is increasing. The likelihood of events like this in hawaii, california and around the world. Our time now. 637 well, todays the first day of school for more than 100,000 bay area students, kids and many of the bay areas Biggest School districts will go back to classrooms today, including San Ramon Valley unified, mount diablo unified, san jose unified and many others. The bay areas Biggest School district in San Francisco wont start until next wednesday. All right. 638 is the time. Back over to sal checking in on the morning commute. What are you keeping an eye on . It sounds like its busy. Yeah, its busy here right now. We do have a look at the commute here. Let me just turn this radio down west bound bay bridge. You can see its backed up all the way out to the maze. Metering lights are on. You can see the san mateo bridge looks better. A couple of days ago, we had a terrible day there. Its nice to see that things are better there. As you can see, the south bay commute continues to be pretty good. No major issues here. Likewise for the peninsula. So here we are still in the 6 00 hour. We still have a decent commute in many of these spots, but things are changing. 638. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. All right. Now, a lot of tropical moisture has moved into Southern California. You can see that its taking the turn, starting to lift north from a couple of little cells. Theyre lining up heading into the high desert. Also moving northward into the San Joaquin Valley and beginning to move up i5 as well. Kettleman city, coalinga near there in paso robles, as well. Some of this could move into the Santa Clara Valley later this afternoon tonight, and then well see about late tonight into tomorrow, 50s 60s on the temps here we are looking for 30s in the mountains. Truckee 36. They briefly dropped a 34 at 5 00 this morning. So South Lake Tahoe 39 mammoth was 39. Now 40. Thats pretty cold, though. The moisture, though, is going to be kind of the forecast bugaboo over the next couple of days. So weve had a retreat from the heat, although it may come back, some warmer hot temperatures by the weekend. A lot will depend on how much cloud cover we get. If we get it, you get the mugginess from the tropical clouds and possible scattered showers south so far and also over the mountains. Again, just depends on which forecast model you use, but it latches on to that moisture, starts to increase it by tonight, starting to move into monterey, Santa Clara Valley and also up in the mountains, sacramento, San Joaquin Valley. And some of that wraps back around towards us. Another surge will take us into friday night, maybe saturday morning with another one sunday, monday. So with drizzle not a problem, a little bit bigger fog bank today than weve seen in the last couple of days. We wont get this much drizzle, but i think you get the idea there will be some local drizzle, but the focus or the attention will be up in the mountains and possibly for us as well, especially towards the south, i think well just get a lot of cloud cover, but its close 60, 70 coast and bay inland temps 80 for many. We backed off a little bit, probably more of the same on friday before i think we get a little pop on those inland temps on the weekend. It just remains to be seen how much cloud cover, more cloud cover, probably wont get us out without that cloud cover could be a little hotter. All right, steve, thank you. Time 640. Well, the fashion world gets a major merger. The two big American Fashion houses that are now coming together. All right. Time now, 640 heading into our newsroom. Instead, the San Mateo County District Attorney says they will face a total of 25 felony charges, including assault with a Deadly Weapon. And discharge of a firearm with gross negligence. We cannot show who started the firing of the weapons, who acted in self defense and who was the aggressor. And we have to be able to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. And thats why we do not have that as to mr. Fields, the person who was murdered out there on that day, five adults were shot. One man, 34 year old ralph fields, junior , died. He was the cousin of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver davante adams. At least 33 rounds were fired during the shootout, and it all happened right in front of children and families who are sent running for safety. Thats not going to be tolerated in East Palo Alto. And so the community has stood up. They have both been vocal and they have submitted their information privately and confidentially to the Police Department. And so thats what were going to continue to do is community now, the District Attorney also says three of the four suspects were already in jail for other crimes when they were charged in this case, our time is now. 645. The owner of a Security Service company is telling us his concerns after two of his Security Guards were involved in shootings. Jim vieira, the ceo of the Kingdom Group protective services, back in april, one of his Security Guards in San Francisco shot and killed the shoplifting suspect, banco brown, at a walgreens. The second shooting happened monday night. One of vieiras Security Guards shot and wounded a robbery suspect at the home depot in san carlos. It is a huge response when you put a gun in a persons hand to expect them to respond. Perfect. Every time. Now, vieira says a state should allow Security Guards to use less lethal weapons other than a taser, which means you have to be close to the suspect. Vieira also says that two incidents are proof that criminals will steal, even in the presence of Security Guards. In todays dollars and cents a massive merger was announced in the fashion world tapestry. The company that now owns koch and kate spade is now buying capri holdings, the Parent Company of versace. Our time now. 648 will pam cook is really happy because San Francisco is outside lands Music Festival is this weekend however the price of last minute resale tickets have skyrocketed. Three day general admission passes are going for more than 1,000 on vivid seats. Thats almost three times more than their face value. The big event starts tomorrow. It will end sunday at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. All right. And hopefully it wont be too hot in the city. Itll be nice and cool. Weve had for august, but traffic will definitely be affected around the Golden Gate Park area. So you know, ive been there before. And my advice to you is if youre healthy, young and you can walk, then walk right, park farther away. If youre taking a car or take transit to the area and just be glad that you can walk in and count it as your exercise for the day. Its a lot of fun out there, but dress in layers. People know this, of course, but maybe someone watching this is the first time out there dress in layers, no matter what the weather is. Lets go out and take a look at the south bay commute. This is northbound, 280, getting up to 280 101 and 85. All looking pretty good. Getting up to that Silicon Valley commute. Lets go to the bay bridge. You can see traffic is backed up all the way out to the maze. San mateo bridge is having a decent day. Its sunny there. Its not sunny at the bay bridge. So little micro microclimate here. Sunny in hayward heading out to the peninsula. Speaking of weather, heres the man who knows it all. Its mister Steve Paulson. And dont forget to wear your jacket when you go out to that show. Hydrated. Hydrate good one. Thank you, sir. All right. 5060s on the temps we have. I think, a pretty good fog bank out there. Temperatures, hey, its 59 and half moon bay. Its 57 in fairfield and livermore. I its a little topsy turvy pattern. This week, thats for sure. Cold in the mountains. Truckee at 501 this morning briefly dropped to 34. Now 36 South Lake Tahoe had 39. Reno is at 45. Mammoth was 39. Now 40. Its all about the tropical moisture. Those moving into Southern California, parts of arizona, Southern Nevada and lifting northward and as it does, some of this may play into our weather later today. Tonight, into the Santa Clara Valley, higher clouds, humidity factor goes up. Mugginess showers, possible scattered showers already some down the Central Valley and a lot of this moisture starts to work its way northward. Looks like itll play into the weather for tahoe santa cruz area, maybe down to monterey. Santa clara valley will mention that. And then there will be a couple little impulses rotating around an upper low which is forming west southwest of Central California. Drizzle is really a drizzle fest, it looks like. Not not this much, but theres going to be nights and mornings of drizzle here. Probably into saturday. And the moisture in the mountains will be increasing. So the lows will go up as that moisture moves in. But some of that moisture could backtrack and play into our forecast. Very difficult to forecast. Tropical moisture when it comes in. But sunny, for most today, Santa Clara Valley, maybe keep an eye on things. You could get some higher midlevel clouds here. 80s inland, 60 to 70s coast and bay inland temps want to warm up and the question is how much moisture will make it if it doesnt, then it may be warmer than that, but will ease into it. Theres going to be a lot of cloud cover nights and mornings, but it does look warmer inland on the weekend. All right. Save thank you.
