Starts now. This is ktvu fox two news at noon. Good afternoon and thank you for joining us. Im andre senior. Im ali rasmus. We continue to follow a developing story out of hawaii. Wildfires are raging on the island of maui. Flames have ripped through the Historic Town of lahaina on the islands west side. Thousands of people have been evacuated as the high winds from Hurricane Dora fueled those fires. Thousands are without power as the governor issues an emergency proclamation. Amanda quintana spoke with people at the airport heading out this morning. One couple said theyre not sure if their home will still be there when they land. The house burned down. We have nothing. We have a two cars. Thats it. And what we have right here, chemo and stuff. Kirkman were vacationing in the bay area when they heard about the fires in their hometown of lahaina. Fred street. Alina luna we live right up a line and we have a house and our dog are stuck in the house. We dont know if our house is up or we dont know if our animals are alive or not. So were heading back now. All they know is what theyve seen on the news video showing massive flames taking over the popular tourist town, home to about 13,000 people. They say their house is in the middle of all of this smoke. Its never going to be the same. No apartments and stores have burned down multiple burn patients have been flown to honolulu hospital, at least one in critical condition. And the coast guard says they had to rescue a dozen people who jumped into the water to escape the flames. 911. And phone service is also down. The lahaina fire is just one of the wildfire burning. This drone video shows the intense wall of flames from fires in kihei. There are also brush fires on the big island while most things can be replaced, it gets pictures of everything. Yeah everything about it. Even have any pictures of my kids growing up. The kirkmans main worry is about their dogs. Nori and bruno. Thats our babies, right there. Their daughter just couldnt get into the town to rescue them. We told her to turn around, get out of there, or go by the ocean. So you can jump in. Keeps the car good job for the Hawaii Department of transportation is asking people not to visit maui in order to keep roads open for emergency responders. But wednesday morning, bay area families were on their way for summer vacation. Well figure it out. Were just going to rally some unaware of the fires. People who live there are okay. I feel like if were staying in like a very populated and like dense, populated area, i feel like were most likely going to be safe even if its without power. Others simply not worried. Not much. We can do about it. So i think if theres a serious concern, we can always head back out, go to a different island. Therell be a potential to get somewhere safer if we need to. But hopefully that doesnt happen and it doesnt come to that. Two flights took off for kahului this morning. Theres another one scheduled later today. But the department of transportation is trying to urge visitors to stay away from maui in oakland, Amanda Quintana ktvu fox two news, california senator Dianne Feinstein was briefly hospitalized after she fell yesterday at her home in San Francisco. Well, a three alarm fire in San Franciscos inner sunset neighborhood badly damaged three buildings. One is a long standing family run business. Ctvs baylee ocarroll spoke with the owner of that business about their next steps and what the community can do to help. I was looking forward to going to work today. Its be quite honest. This sucks. Like that. Like, randy blair coowns progress hardware with his father. The hardware shop has been a staple on irving road for 75 years. Weve been here longer than the San Francisco giants. But everything changed when flames tore through the decades old shop just after 8 00 last night. Theres a lot of smoke, a lot of smoke damage. But the back room is just gone, he said they hope to be able to reopen in 12 to 18 months. In the meantime, hes unsure what their next steps are, but says hes thinking about their employees. Its gonna be tough. Yeah, a lot of decisions to be made. So for this to happen now, its just kind of like its a hiccup. Its a big hiccup, but well get through it. Those who live nearby, like longtime inner sunset resident greg doers, say theyre already missing progress. Yes, i would say to everyone, if you want to help progress hardware, the way you help it is when they come back, you shop there because they have everything you need and theyre right here and right now. The fire also tore through an Apartment Building around the corner that he called home for years. It has some issues. I hope those issues get resolved. Im sure there are good people of good faith that are going to do something about it, he says. Unfortunately he wasnt surprised to hear about the fire. The red cross was on scene and said seven of the 24 units in the building were badly damaged. The cause of this fire is still under investigation. Thankfully, though, some good news. No injuries to report in this fire. Reporting in San Francisco, im bailey ocarroll, ktvu fox two news. Vallejo police will hold another town hall at the end of this month to explain why officers may not be able to respond to some 911 calls. Police held a Public Meeting last night. Now, if the Vallejo Police department was fully staffed, it would have 132 sworn officers. But it is far short of that number. The department has 50 vacancies right now. There are only 30 officers in the Patrol Division for the entire city. Police say they will not be able to respond to every home alarm call. Only those that are verified. Residents say the Staffing Shortage makes them feel very unsafe. I have two neighbors who had home invasions and were on the phone with 911, and were told no one was coming. Concerned about hearing that, put it out in the streets because that was criminal criminals like, oh, its open season and little mouth. Police say theyve received more than 10,000 alarm calls in the past two years. 98 of them turn out to be false alarms. The chief says each call requires 2 to 4 officers to respond, and that wastes valuable resources. We just dont have the ability to respond to everything. So we have to figure out how to respond a little more smartly. Verified calls are defined as those coming from witnesses manually activated panic alarms, silent robbery alarms and video alerts that show a crime in progress. Advocates groups say some seniors dont have enough money to spend and the extreme heat is forcing them to make tough decisions about what they buy. Seniors sometimes on a very fixed income, have to decide, am i going to go buy groceries or get this medication , or am i going to be able to pay for these Household Expenses and still no relief in sight. Forecasts are expecting high temperatures across much of the south for all of this month. Its the latest from dallas. Casey stegall, ktvu fox two news meteorologist mark tamayo is here at mark the map behind you really tells the tale here of just how hot it is and where the intensity of the heat is happening right now. Yeah, thats right. Andre no cool colors on this map, right . Were not showing you any dark blues or anything like that. That me show you in the wintertime. Take a look at the current numbers across the country right now. Its 101in dallas. 102 in phenix, lots of heat focused. If you heard that Previous Story in the south as you head up to the north, not as hot, but still, it is a fairly warm, as you can see. Well, chicagos actually okay. 78 degrees in new york. New york city right now is checking in 86. Now, here in the bay area, we had some heat a few days ago, but temperatures cooled off quite a bit to yesterday. And were kind of settling within this range for today, tomorrow and even into your friday before we eventually warm things to back up by that time frame. Showing you this a satellite. As we check out the low clouds and fog that were over the coast and over the bay earlier this morning, now trying to clear out just offshore. As you can see, we still have some lingering patches closer to pillar point, right around half moon bay, right around the Marin Headlands. Closer to Stinson Beach as well. But we are seeing increasing sunshine this afternoon for your wednesday. Take a look at the current numbers. Statewide South Lake Tahoe is a pleasant 74 bakersfield in the 80s and san diego and los angeles close to 80 degrees. Take a look at our current numbers out there. Its actually looking okay. So the cooldown that really kicked in yesterday, were kind of settling in that comfortable range right now. San francisco, 69, santa rosa in the upper 60s and some 70s for concord, livermore and in san jose. Heres a live camera looking out above San Francisco where you can see some blue sky up above. We had some cloud cover this morning trying to clear back to it near the coastline. So heres whats happening in this area of High Pressure. Is backing out of the picture. So were not talking about any major heat. In fact, we get a break from the heat as this guy settles in from the north. We have the remnants of what was once Tropical Storm eugene. Were watching out for this as this this linked up the moisture kind of links up with the upper level pattern to bring in some high clouds with tropical moisture for thursday and friday. A few high clouds. It could feel a bit humid around here and the possibility of some showers to the south of the bay area and also out to the east fl probably just pick up a few high clouds. We definitely have to keep an eye on the radar to see if any of that activity approaches the region. From the south. Here we are this afternoon where we could have some patchy cloud cover near portions of the coastline for your wednesday and then into your thursday could see a big batch of high clouds kind of moving in from the south and then once again into your friday. So friday we could have some maybe mostly cloudy skies with some lower clouds and then some higher clouds as well. For today, though, well bump up the sunshine once again. Still some patchy overcast near portions of the shoreline. No major heat, no heat advisories, no triple digits, not much in the way of 90s. Were just thinking some 60s, some 70s and some 80s. This afternoon. And if you like today, i think youll like the forecast coming up for your thursday. No big changes headed our way for thursday and a friday, although it could be a bit humid around here. Looks pretty good into saturday to start off the weekend. We will bump up those numbers on sunday. Warmest locations could be back up to the 90s and if we were to extend that into next week, maybe the inland neighborhoods back up into the mid to upper 90s. So if youre not a fan of the heat, make the most of today and tomorrow because were looking okay and if youre inland make sure you get to a pool perhaps there you go maybe 10,000 steps a day might not be the magic number after all. Ktvu fox two news at noon for the latest news and weather. G ha at the forecast today. Hey, mark. Hi there, ali. Yeah, the skies have been clearing out over the past few hours, although its kind of linked up with a little bit of a cooling trend here in the bay area. Were not talking about any inland heat, no heat advisories. So temperatures have been dropping off a bit and were kind of settling within this range over the next couple of days. Heres the satellite still showing you this. The low clouds and fog. So partly to mostly sunny for your wednesday afternoon for cast and we get a break from the heat as this system is kind of anchored up here to our north. We have been watching this, the remnants of what was once Tropical Storm eugene moving in from the south and that moisture will continue to move in with with bringing in some high clouds, not for today, but for thursday. And friday. Could feel a bit humid out there. And shower activity mainly to the south and to the east of the bay area out toward the sierra. So well be watching the radar closely over the next couple of days once again for thursday and into friday. Heres the forecast models. We put this into motion, not too much change for today, but look what happens in the thursday. You can see some some clouds thats linked up with the with the moisture moving in from the south. This is thursday afternoon. Maybe feeling a bit humid, a bit muggy around here and then definitely into a friday. As far as the shower chances, there is a slight chance closer to maybe monterey bay. And well definitely be watching the radar to see how things kind of develop as this moisture moves in from the south. Theres always a little bit of a question mark with that moisture, especially when its linked up with what was once a Tropical Storm or hurricane. So something well be watching. Youll definitely notice those changes with those high clouds and also the humid conditions for us this afternoon. Partly sunny skies, even mostly sunny skies and temperatures ranging from the lower 60s out toward the coast. San francisco, it feels like a warm day when San Francisco is in the 70s and that could be the case this afternoon, right around 70 warmest locations inland will be around 83 to 84 degrees. So definitely we have been cooling off ever sunday. Monday, we had upper 90s to right around 100 degrees inland. Not the case for today and pretty much the same stories. You cant see the breakdown here in the thursday and into friday looking pretty good into the weekend and then on sunday we could bump up those temperatures and maybe a few neighborhoods approaching that 90 degree mark. Yeah most of the Historic Town of lahaina on the islands west side. Thousands of people have been evacuated as high winds from Hurricane Dora drive the flames. No deaths have been reported, but several burn victims have been airlifted to hospitals in honolulu. We caught up with a couple at sfo who were vacationing in the bay area when they heard about the fires in their hometown of lahaina. Theyre trying to return home, but they dont know what to expect when they get there. Fred street, honolulu. We live right up a line and we have a house and our dogs are stuck in the house. We dont know if our house is up or we dont know if our animals are alive or not. So no, were heading back now. Well, the Hawaiian National guard is now in maui assisting with rescues and firefighting. And the coast guard also carried out rescues along the coast of people who went into the ocean to avoid the flames. Maui is, of course, a popular vacation destination. Thats why a family from saint carlos is there right now. Marine cedric told me a short time ago she arrived at 1 p. M. Hawaii time yesterday and the only alert she got that anything was happening there was from her resort letting her know that the power was out. It was only after she arrived on the island and was driving toward the lahaina and kaanapali side that she realized that wildfires were burning their out of control. Nobody told us about fires or anything like that. We just flew into Kahului Airport and we just assumed that there would just be a power outage for a short time and that it would get resolved by the end of the day. So thats all we knew. Tell me about the moment you found out things were more than what youre being told. Honestly, we didnt find out until we saw it. So once we got our rental car, we started driving into lahaina, kaanapali area and just saw the wind speeds. I mean, the wind speeds were insanely high. Tree branches had fallen. Were seeing power lines onto the ground on this one inlet lane into lahaina and kaanapali and all of a sudden we see huge plume of smoke and so wer safet all. And cars just keep driving into the smoke and we see emergency vehicles behind us try and get in, i mean, sporadically. This isnt a lot of emergency vehicles. You could tell that this fires been raging for a while. And we just get closer and the wind speeds and the fire plumes are just so big. We decided to turn around only because we didnt feel like it was safe. Marina, youre with your children and youre driving through all this not really understanding what is happening here. Describe what was going through your mind at the time. The assume you were scared, afraid, yeah. No, i was really scared. I was thinking this doesnt seem safe for our kids. Were not sure if were going to get there safely. I mean, we were we just this didnt seem right. We were really confused that nobody had told us we shouldnt be driving that direction. Like we should have not even been on that road whatsoever yesterday. I mean, we were there and it just wasnt safe for tourists to be there worried. Has anyone any official word come down to you as a tourist in that area about what you should and should not be doing right now . Nothing we have heard of. All ive seen is whats on the media today and alerts from our sos like phone alerts that we get just saying evacuation notices for certain areas. But that only happened in the middle of the night. And this morning, were seeing news reports. But yesterday there was nothing being reported about the fire. We didnt even know the extent of it until we saw it. Whats your situation right now . So we decided to turn around and we just booked a hotel in wailea. Everybody here has just been talking about how they werent able to get into kaanapali leyna. This was a vacation for you. What are your plans now . Um honestly, we dont know. We booked another night and we lay here, but outside theres definitely smoke smell in the air. So the air quality isnt good here, so im not really sure what were going to do. Were going to stay probably one more night here in wailea and see how things progress tomorrow. If we cant make it to kaanapali, were going to try to call our airline to see if we can get a flight back to california. Well, ktvu meteorology mark tamayo joining us now with a better look at the weather conditions in the island of maui. And mark, the hurricane miles away from that fire played a role in fanning those flames. Absolutely, ali. Its kind of ironic because that hurricane, if it were close to it, produced so much rainfall. Of course, you dont want this hurricane to be close to land, but it would produce so much rainfall that it would actually put out those fires. But as you can see here as well, to the south, you can get an idea here of the overall upper level wind pattern where you have this area of High Pressure up here to the north. And then, of course, thats an area of low pressure linked up with what is now Hurricane Dora. And that producing the pressure difference to generate those very strong winds. Its just the pressure set up. We talk about the same pattern here that produces those offshore winds. The difference in pressure, well, you have the area of High Pressure up here, the area of low pressure here deepening low pressure, of course, with that major hurricane, and that is producing the wind at difference. Now, earlier, they had high wind warnings. Now we have a wind advisory. So the winds theoretically as this as a system moves out to sea or moves out to the west, the winds will gradually decrease. But still it is windy today. We still have wind advisories in place until 6 00 this evening. The higher for the highest peaks. We could have winds going up about 50 miles an hour. But heres a forecast point for lahaina throughout the day today. And as you can see here, the wind does not back off. Its still we could have some gusts around 25 to 30 miles an hour. Thats what were showing you right here. By 3 00. And then as we take this into the evening hours, the winds gradually back off. They dont go away, but at least they are trending in the right direction. So the peak of the winds earlier are no longer a high wind warning, but we still have a wind advisory until 6 00 this evening. And as you take a look at that expiration time, that should be the time the winds really back off as we head into later on this afternoon and into the evening hours. But this is all linked once again with a powerful hurricane to the south, an area of High Pressure up to the north. But at least thankfully, the wind forecast is trending in the right direction. Later on today. Thank you, mark. Well, an Investigation Continues in oakland where two men were killed in two separate shootings. They demonstrated for lee, using a simple example of an ice cube and one of their wafers and now akash wants to grow in oakland. We want manufacture to come back into our community. Liz for instance, here with akash manufacturing, what they are doing in terms of Semi Conductors will help create about 500 jobs in this great city.
