Okay it is cooler. Fog has returned now. Most of the fog, the heavier fog bank is to the north, not so much. Theres plenty of breaks to the south. 50 on the temps, though. Low clouds and system got helped by that clipped right along there. You can see that up in the sierra nevada, oregon. But that knocked down the high and thats going to give us a cooler pattern probably for the next 3 or 4 days here. Big fog bank returns breezy to windy for some, but cooler for all. 6070s and 80s. Well, if youre thinking of getting on the san mateo bridge from the hayward side, i probably reconsider that. Yeah unless you like costco on saturdays or maybe the alameda fair trying to get out at, say, 2 00. I mean, those are the analogies that come up with. Let me show you what the san mateo bridge looks like westbound 92 heading across all the way across to foster city. This is because of a crash and theyre waiting for a special kind of tow truck to arrive. And thats why its taken so long. Look at this picture. You dont want any of this. These two bay area universities, they are the two of four remaining schools in the pac 12. And we heard from the golden bears head coach over the weekend saying this seemingly fall of the pac 12, he calls it sad. I grew up around the pac ten pac 12 conference and watching it and being fortunate to be a part of it, coached in it for a long time. Its right there at the end of the bridge westbound on 92. Right at the end, right there where i put the arrow. And its been there since about six. And now here we are ten minutes after seven. And that bridge is very slow. In fact, let me show you let me show you a picture of the bridge, if i can go back to it. Now you can see that my bridge camera. There it is. Okay its still very slow. Look youre not youre barely moving there, so you might want to avoid that san mateo bridge and use the bay bridge. That doesnt look that bad. Surveillance video shows the thieves breaking into the 7eleven on harrison in downtown oakland about 4 00 yesterday morning. They stole cigarets and they tried to remove a safe, but that was bolted down. Now, last thursday, six people arrived in three cars at a store on 23rd avenue. One person rammed a car into the front window and door of that store, stole items, took off as well. Theyre tired of this like were here to do a business. Were here to serve the community. Were here to work, to serve and feed our families. Now, several store owners say they believe its the same group of people hitting the different stores. They wear face coverings and work in groups of 4 to 6, carrying garbage bags and stealing all the cigaret and tobacco product. All right, claudine, right back to Sal Castaneda at 718, major commute problems this morning. South yeah, that san mateo bridge westbound 92 has been a problem since 6 00 this morning where we had a truck accident and there werent any serious injuries. But it the truck is disabled and its been there going on an hour and a half almost not quite. But the damage is done here. Look at that san mateo bridge. Just want to let you know youre just waking up hearing about this. You should avoid the san mateo bridge and think about using another bridge like the bay bridge. Could be a good option. Its backed up, but its a lot more doable. At least the traffic is getting through. We can go back to the dumbarton bridge and look at that. It doesnt look all that slow. Theres a little bit more slowing when you get off the bridge here, right there. Thats not the usual case. But i would still put up with that rather than being on that san mateo bridge thats the biggest problem we have right now. 719 lets bring steve back in and talk about todays weather. Thank you, sal. An onshore breeze onshore direction established itself. The fog came in not for all, but it was pretty good. Fog bank north, more patchy to the south and east. But the onshore breeze is in place. Not only that, but were getting some pretty good gusts. Out to travis now, up to 30 miles an hour. Again west, southwest concord, south at napa airport. So a pretty good cooler air aloft as well. Temperatures have dropped 15 degrees, some of the Higher Elevations, a lot of 50s here, low 60s versus mid to upper 70s. While inland at this time, livermore is running along with san jose, seven degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Concord five Mountain Views, five san carlos five. So most locations already running cooler 37 up in truckee mammoth briefly dropped a 37 as well. South lake tahoe is down to 4257. In reno, a couple systems in the Pacific Northwest have knocked the high, moved it off towards the east. Thats allowing a cooler pattern. The high wants to build back in it always does this time of year, but its being knocked out of here for about four days, maybe over the weekend. Well see. Theres a lot of differences in the projections for the weekend. So the fog returns cooler, breezy and drizzle. Our good friend mr. Drizzle is in town here a little bit today. I think more so tonight and tomorrow. Fog bank thickens up. One area to watch Going Forward here would be the remains of a tropical system starting to show itself. Coming up along baja. Itll probably stay south. Ill mention it for now in case it decides to zig instead of zag. But some of the moisture will start to thicken up and would favor the central sierra and maybe tahoe as we head towards later this week and end of the week of just just an fyi here, i dont think itll be much of a factor for us. But could be south. Well know more as we like to say by about thursday or friday timeframe. Big fog bank returns, drizzle and breezy to windy, sunny but cooler for all today. 50, 60, 70, 80 on your temps after the upper 90s or mid 90s for many yesterday and all the way through friday doesnt look like any big changes. Keep an eye on that tropical moisture though. Okay thank you, steve. Well a mother is suing Southwest Airlines for how they treated her and her daughter on her flight out of san jose. Environmentalists strongly support President Bidens decision for an area that has long been sacred to native american tribes. Tribes of the grand canyon have been working to award protection for this region since long before other environmental groups came along. Since long before the grand canyon trust came along. President bidens stop in arizona is part of a three day campaign trip. The president s goal was to highlight his administrations environmental, economic and legislative accomplishments. Our time is now. 725. A judge in Donald Trumps election interference cases calling for a hearing this week on what trump can say about the case. Trumps lawyers claim that would infringe on his right to free speech and they may also push for a change of venue, suggesting holding the investigation and hearing in West Virginia instead of washington, d. C. I think the president s going to face an uphill battle in trying to get this case moved to West Virginia. The constitution says you typically try trials on the jurisdiction where the alleged offense occurred. Now, the judge has ordered the special counsel and trumps legal team give her proposed dates and times for a hearing about that protection order. She wants the hearing to take place before friday. Theres a line there. We do maybe right there. Stick your head out and wave. Hello there. Some low clouds, but a much bigger fog bank to the north. Kind of hit and miss here for others. 50 on the temps. Any 60s . Yeah. Palo alto is now checking in at 61. A lot more clearing on the peninsula than other locations. But the fog you can see first images of the visible satellite go north and theres plenty there. Thats filled in rapidly. A couple items of interest here might be some tropical moisture later in the week, probably wont make it. Ill just give you a heads up and say maybe well i think itll stay south of us, but well see if that develops. Itd be thursday or friday if it does, big fog bank in place though. Breezy to windy. Thats kind of the key here. And cooler temperatures were all above yesterday. Theyll go below today. All right. Sounds here. San mateo bridge better, worse. Same its the same. It really is very slow. Theyve had some issues getting this crash off the bridge because a big rig or a truck was involved and its slow all the way across. I would avoid the san mateo bridge. I would avoid even being on 92 just going out to claw witter. I just avoid the whole thing. You can see how terrible it looks here traffic wise. If youre driving to the bay bridge, it might be putting more traffic on there, although it seems a little more normal and no problems on highway four. We havent been talking about that much, but its backed up almost into antioch through pittsburgh bay point and into concord, heading west. 731. Lets go back to the desk. All right, sal, thank you, will. Happening today, the big drawing for whats expected to be the largest Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot in history. It grew to. 1. 5 billion. Ali rasmussen is in san carlos now to talk more about that jackpot. Good morning, ali. Good morning. Yeah, its certainly an eye catching number, isnt it, dave . Lottery officials and Convenience Store owners tell us that usually when you get a jackpot this big 1. 5 billion, as you can see from that digital sign, it tends to draw in people who usually dont play lottery or dont play every day. No ones won the Mega Millions jackpot since april 18th. And thats why the pot of money has ballooned so big. Expected to be the largest Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot in history. Now, if you are playing, keep in mind , we all know this, right . The odds not in our favor. Your chances of winning are 1 in 302,000,000. If you match all six numbers correctly. But that hasnt stopped people from trying their luck. When its big like this, ill come in and get a ticket. You know, i dont usually play daily, but when its big like this, you got to try. You never know. Somebody hits it right . There are, of course, smaller prizes. If you match some of the six numbers. So if you match five, youll get 1 million, match four, you get 10,000. And while thats not the same as a one and a half dollars million jackpot, its also not nothing. So some of the people weve talked to here this morning and not everyone coming in is playing Mega Millions. But the people who are are saying, you know, if i dont win, its im out 2. Its not a big deal. Its fun to play. Its fun to dream. So thats the mentality of people taking part and trying their hand at this 1. 5 billion jackpot. The drawing is at 8 00 tonight. The deadline for veterans to apply for backdated benefits under the pact act is tomorrow, and there is a new political debate on capitol hill over the endangered species act, which became law exactly 50 years ago. Supporters say it has been tremendously successful in protecting endangered animals and plants since it was first enacted back in 1973. More than 99 of those listed as endangered or on the verge of extinction have survived. But some Republican Leaders say the cost and regulations tied to the endangered species act are getting out of control. And it is absolutely possible to question the cost of the essay without questioning the need to protect species, even though some here will say otherwise. Cost does matter. The debate over funding the endangered species act has heated up in recent years, with supporters saying that Climate Change has made it more important than ever. All right. Our time is just about 737. Theres a mystery this morning, but the Australian Space Agency says it was probably a Russian Rocket falling to earth that caused streaks of light across the sky last night. For the people in melbourne, australia said that light lasted almost a minute and then it was followed by a loud boom. Australia was space officials believed the Russian Rocket broke up into several pieces but it kept burning for a few more seconds. They say there is no word of any debris. Actually reaching the ground. All right, lets talk about our roadways. Weve been waiting for that tow truck this morning, sal, to kind of help ease that morning commute in the peninsula. Yeah the san mateo bridge had a crash at about 6 00 in the morning. Were almost were past the 1. 5 hour point and the san mateo bridge is very slow and the traffic on 92 is very slow. Its having an effect on eight 8238. This whole thing is slow. And now the dumbarton bridge was usually isnt that slow is very slow as people are realizing hey that san mateo bridge is not a good option. Lets use that. Dumbarton bridge bay bridge is slow. It looks better than i thought it would, considering whats going on. Maybe people dont want to come up to the bay bridge, but its still very slow. So the whole thing is having an effect here because of that truck accident. And no, its still not clear, unfortunately. 739 lets bring steve back in here with todays weather. Thank you, sir. Appreciate that. All right. I did a Little Research here. Sometimes i have time. I get my feet off the desk. San franciscos high as 77 yesterday. That ties the warmest temperature of the summer. The last time they were 77 was on july 1st, and thats been it. There havent been any 80s. The last time i could find a 90 was back in october. So, i mean, if you thought it was warm, it was. But thats as high as youve been this entire year. And today you cool down big time. Now you know, and i know if you live in the city, usually end of august, september is when you start to get a little nervous. Livermore was 99 yesterday. Concord 98, santa rosa, 94. Canfield 93. San jose 93. Palo alto, 92. Oakland hit 80. And theres the citys 77 degrees. I was even looking the last time they had an 80 was back in june a year ago. So, i mean, its been 70s and a couple of 90s and thats been it for about a year in San Francisco, san jose dropping from 93 to 80. Redwood city, 92 to 78. Walnut creek, 98 to 82. Its a big drop there. Santa rosa, 94 to 78. Cooler has arrived and i think itll be here for the bulk of the week. Differences on the weekend. So well wait till the end of the week, see if they sort themselves out. But the main message is the onshore wind and thats the direction the wind is coming from, is coming out of the west southwest. And when travis has gust of 30 plus, they have 30, theyve been up to 33. Thats a sure sign that the delta breeze is in place here. We had a lot of upper 70s yesterday at this time. Now its 50 and 60s. So noticeably cooler. Livermore, seven degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. San jose is seven as well. Concord five mountain dew, five san carlos five novato four. So bigger fog bank though by far to the north. Truckee dropped to 37 this morning. South lake tahoe 42 mammoth briefly dropped to 37. Now theyre 50. It doesnt last long, but still thats pretty good. Chill there for the august early august air systems moving into the Pacific Northwest. The high wants to build in. Its not so fast. So the fog returns cooler, breezy to windy. The heat is over for now and temperatures dropping and drizzle is in place here. There could be some pretty decent totals over the next, id say 4 to 8 hours, nights and mornings here. We had a little bit this morning. Not a lot. Some tropical moisture remains of a tropical system probably stay in central and southern california. Ill mention it. Youre getting into that time of year, august, september, when youre trying to keep an eye on. And you can see for bishop, its ramped up a little bit there. Maybe for South Lake Tahoe as we head towards the weekend. But again, i wouldnt change any plans or anything, just something to watch for next couple of days here. 5060s near the water around the bay, 70 and then inland itll be 70s and 80s. Big drop in those temps and theyll stay here probably through the end of the week. Maybe some warming on the weekend. That just remains to be seen. How much, though. All right. See, thank you. It is eight eight teen and man the pictures youve been watching, sal around the bay area tough commute for people on this tuesday. Yeah. When one of the bridges has a Major Incident the other bridges try to pick up the slack and thats why its going to be very slow on the dumbarton bridge. Its slow all the way from 880. Ill put the map up here. Ill show you that the san mateo bridge itself is slow. So is the dumbarton bridge and so is 880. Even 237 getting into the act of people going down there trying to avoid all this. Its caused pressure on the south bay commute, people driving into sunnyvale. So you know, it doesnt surprise me, but sometimes im still amazed by how one bridge can really affect everything else. This is the bay bridge. This is backed up all the way out to the maze, although it doesnt seem to be as slow. I think that the san mateo bridge may be even having more of an effect because the san mateo bridge slowdown is affecting even the south bay at 819. What about todays weather . It looks sunny at the bay bridge. Steve its a very good question. Ill answer that in the next minute. And 30s yesterday, though, hot for many, this will be it for at least 4 or 5 days as far as any 90s go. Livermore 99, concord 98. Santa rosa, 94, canfield and san jose 93. Palo alto is 92. Onshore breeze, ill say, or wind. Its out of the west, southwest that is ushering in the cooler pattern. And not only that, youre seeing travis 24 gusts almost to 30. Theyve been up to 33mph. Napa airport, south wind, concord, south wind, oakland, south wind. Theres an onshore breeze from all the way out to livermore. So 50s and 60s, we are down considerably from 24 hours ago. It does look like a little uptick in moisture for the weekend. If youre going to the mountains. 62, though, sacramento and thats a big fog bank. All the noticeable holes in it for about oakland south just patchy but north of that were in county San Pablo Bay Sonoma County napa thats a good surge on fog and low cloud. So theyll drop considerably on those temps. A couple of items, one north, one south. These systems moving in have knocked down the High Pressure system. So a cooler pattern it wants to build back in not that fast, but it wants to build back in. But the fog returns cooler breezy to windy and the heat is over for now. But the drizzle is not and i think well get some pretty good amounts here next couple of nights and mornings here along the coast and some of the Higher Elevations as well. Some tropical moisture might play in to our forecast, maybe Santa Clara Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains late thursday, friday , some of that could light up over the mountains here. Now, the focus early is for the central sierra, but look at that. So something to watch if you are going tahoe or truckee, maybe the upcoming weekend could be some boomers developing their 50s and 60s for anyone near the water, 70s and 80s inland big fog bank returns sunny breezy to windy and temps coming down. But, you know, most of the people i talked to when i asked them, why do you play this . Why do you do this when you know its really not likely youre going to win . Most people just shrug and say, you know, its something fun to do. And certainly the jackpot amount is whats drawing a lot of people in outside the 7eleven in belmont, where you can see that 1. 5 billion prize for the Mega Millions drawing advertised on this digital sign. Most of the people weve seen coming into this store are usually getting a cup of coffee or a snack, but every once in a while someone comes in to buy a Mega Millions ticket or two or more. Theres the lucky number right there. I generally, when it gets up to this big, i think on this one here, i probably got about 200 invested. Youve spent 200 in Mega Millions tickets already, but i dont go crazy like this unless it gets to this amount. Yeah, you heard that right. The man we spoke to told us hes already spent 200 in Mega Millions tickets before he bought several more just this morning ahead of tonights jackpot. No one has won the Mega Millions jackpot since april 18th. Thats why the pot of money has ballooned so big. Its expected to be the largest Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot in the games history. Now, the odds again, not in our favor. Your chances of winning are one and 302 million. If you match all six numbers correctly, that hasnt stopped people from trying their luck. When its big like this, ill come in and get a ticket. You know, i dont usually play daily, but was big like this. You got to try. You never know. Somebody hits it right . There are, of course, other smaller prizes to win. If you match some of the numbers, if you get five, you win 1 million match four, you get 10,000. And while ten grand is not the same as a billion and a half dollars, its still a nice chunk of change. So most of the people we talked to say, hey, theyre willing to try it. If they dont win, theyre out a couple bucks. Although that last gentleman we showed you in the story, 200, thats quite a big investment to try and win the Mega Millions jackpot. The drawing, by the way, is at 8 00 tonight. Back to you guys. Maybe ali was part of a pool. Im big on on the pool. Get get a group of friends so you dont win alone. You know, thats the only time i will ever play. And its strictly to avoid fomo. Yeah. What if Everybody Wins and im left out . I would be kicking myself afterwards. So just hedged my bets. Ill do it. If its a work pool and youre showing up at two, three in the morning by yourself. Yeah that is motivation to just throw the 2 in. All right. Thanks, ali. Well, two San Francisco supervisor orders are now on opposite sides of a plan to help drug users get off the streets. There had been a push to open whats called a new Wellness Center near the hall of justice supervisor matt dorsey represents that neighborhood and originally had supported that idea. But he says a lot has changed since the original proposal. He says at first, six sites in six different neighborhoods. Were going to have a wellness hub, but then it was narrowed to three and now theres just one. The original plan called for supervised drug consumption as well. But the City Attorney said that would violate federal law. So now dorsey has changed his mind when i signed up for this, the idea was that wellness hub was going to be a safe consumption site. Now dorsey wants the money diverted to help incarcerate a drug users through Jail Health Services supervisor Hillary Ronen says the change is a political ploy and she says the Wellness Center can still help drug users even if they dont have space for supervised drug use. What we can do is we can fund all the other services that Wellness Centers provide counseling, Harm Reduction supplies, acupuncture, wound treatment, visits with doctors. Ronan points out theres already a Harm Reduction center in dorseys district, where 150 people a day. Were using the services, she says. Now more than 500 people a day are there asking for help. Organizers others say some people have seen their rent increase several times a year. If we dont want Homeless People and we dont want people constantly evicted because thats whats happening. Supporters say it has been tremendously successful in protecting endangered animals and plants since it was first enacted in 1973. More than 99 of those listed as endangered or on the verge of extinction have survived. But some Republican Leaders say the cost and regulations tied to the endangered species act are getting out of control. It is absolutely possible to question the cost of the without questioning the need to protect species, even though some here will say otherwise. Cost does matter. The debate over funding the endangered species act has heated up in recent years, with supporters saying Climate Change has made it more important than ever. The forecast models are kind of struggling with the weekend, but next few days its all about cooler and an onshore wind or breeze. Ill say right through the golden gate over San Pablo Bay, through the strait, out to the delta, theres an onshore direction here, almost 30, 33mph out of travis since early this morning. We had a lot of 70s, upper 70s at this time yesterday, not today. Its 60s and 50s on those temps. And as you saw noticeably cooler briefly this morning, mountain Mammoth Lakes dropped a 37. There are now 61. Truckee dropped to 37. They are now 48 in South Lake Tahoe, around 653 this morning. Touch 42. Theyre now 51 degrees. Low clouds and fog and plenty to go around here. Well keep the onshore breeze in place and the cooler pattern, the high in the four corners always wants to build back in, but its being held in check right now. Heat is over for now. Next hint of anything wouldnt be until sunday. One item of interest that would be tropical moisture coming up late thursday, friday, maybe into saturday. Most likely itll stay south and east of us. But ill mention you can see some of that moisture beginning to see an uptick there towards central sierra and maybe tahoe and truckee. I dont think itll play into our weather here, but it could be close for the Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains late thursday into friday, a couple of days to sort out the details, if you like. Cooler weather next few days are for you. We do it for you.
