Up for success, not every child has the supplies they need to excel in the classroom. How you can help support thousands of students this morning at the annual pack of Backpack School supply and backpack distribution. Plus a nerve wracking finish at the fifa womens world cup as the us narrowly advances to the next round of the tournament. Were not happy with the performance we put out there, but at the same time were moving on. Well break down some of the key moments from the game and take a look at whats next for team usa. Live from jack london square. This is morning time to the nine. Yes, we are heading into our 9 00 hour this tuesday, august first. Looking live over the oakland estuary. Of course, its august. That means it is august. Lots of it over oakland. Lots of it over the bay area. Certainly dont expect it to go away anytime soon. 9 to 1 this morning. We continue to follow developing story in San Francisco. Thats right. Thats where a fire is still being put out. Actually the fire is out. But we have an Early Morning fire that was in a building under construction there in San Francisco. And it was big. Ali rasmus has been out there for hours. So whats the latest . Whats happening now . Well, dave, the fire is out. Luckily no one was hurt. The building that caught fire here on octavia and oak street was a partially constructed residential building. So it had just the wood frame and didnt even have any sheetrock or anything up. So as the chief describes it, it was pretty vulnerable and it burned pretty quickly. The fire broke out just before 6 00 and it burned. So hot that according to the chief, the radiant heat it was putting out actually cracked and shattered some of the glass windows on the building right across the street. Now, within 20 minutes of this fire starting what was left of that partially built, partially constructed building collapse. Take a look. Now at its worst, this was a four alarm fire. That means there was 140 firefighters and more than 40 trucks and ambulances out here pointing their resources and hoses on this fire. It luckily, nobody was hurt, but the fire did cause a little bit of damage to at least four homes around it. So the roof, the fire did spread to the roof of two homes, apartment buildings next to this one. And then two other ones had significant smoke and water damage. So a total of eight people are displaced. And heres what the chief had to say. This morning about some of the challenges in tackling this fire. When a building is under construction like this, it was completely wide open. So its basically a pile of matchsticks and theres no Sprinkler System in place. Theres no sheetrock in place. Theres no fire protection, anything in place. So its just like burning man, just setting it off. And thats what we saw here. Now now whats happening right now is that the department of building inspection needs to come out here. They need to take a look at whats left of this building and figure out when it will be safe to start taking down the scaffolding, because this road has to be completely shut down to all traffic and pedestrians until they can take down anything that could potentially fall off this building. So right now, you see some of the people who were displaced in last count. Theres eight people who have to find a new place to stay. Talking to some of the firefighters theyve been able to go through to their homes and collect some of their belongings to find another place to stay. Again, the good news, nobody was hurt, but eight people displaced. Now the Building Department of building inspection is going to do their work to figure out when it is the best time to take down all this scaffolding around whats left of this building that caught fire and again, this street cant reopen until then. So, octavia, between fell and oak completely shut down in both directions. This is a major thoroughfares. You know, people get to and from the central freeway from using this road. But dont expect it to be open and expect traffic to be pretty bad in this part of the city for most of the day. Live in San Francisco, allie rasmus ktvu, fox two news. All right, ali, thank you. Time is now 904. A new business in the east bay city of martinez celebrated its grand opening on friday. And yesterday morning it was burglarized in vandalized. Now its called bentleys. It sits inside of a shipping container. So its mobile crystal. Ainsley and her boyfriend built it and they have high hopes that their unique idea will be popular. Its an out of the box concept that martinez has never seen. Its fun. Its different. Not a lot of people see it out here and you can have it right outside. And who doesnt like a nice cocktail outside . Now, crystal and her partner, melina clegg, says fridays opening was a big success. So its really hard to see someone try to destroy their new business. Its just so discouraging to have to have somebody do that to you would not really understand why , like whats why now . The opening on sunday was delayed while the women and their friends cleaned everything up. What was left behind by the thief . The women say theyre grateful for all the people who came out to support their business after that break in, and theyre hoping the police catch the suspect before he commits another crime. Relatives and neighbors of a 75 year old oakland woman say theyre proud of her for shooting at two men who tried to rob her inside her home. The men broke into her house in the chabot park neighborhood about 2 00 last wednesday morning. They kicked in her front door, headed straight for her bedroom, pointed guns at her and demanded her phone. Her daughter, who asked not to be identified, and her neighbors say she was ready. She had the presence of mind to reach in her nightstand and get a weapon, and she had it under the covers at first. And then when she saw an opening, she fired a shot. I believe that this is a message also for the criminals that people in oakland were tired of the lawlessness. People are standing up. People are fighting back. While the men fired about 20 shots and took her jewelry. But the woman was not hurt. Neighbors say there have been at least one other Home Invasion in the same area recently. And city leaders say theyve increased the number of Police Patrols in that neighborhood. Time now, 906. The Oakland Police commission now accused of failing to meet its deadline to investigate allegations of misconduct against Police Officers in the city. The newly hired director of the Community Police review agency says his group is trying to work through a huge backlog of cases. The director says the next step is to take a close look at some of the most serious misconduct cases to ensure Police Officers are held accountable. I think now that weve really diagnosed the problem, theres an easy path forward. Were just looking at every single one of these cases and saying, wheres the misconduct . Lets prioritize investigating that officer involved shootings, deaths in custody, in other cases where theres something that appears to be egregious, the director now hopes to have the investigative caseload under control within the next nine months. Many members of the Police Commission say they were totally unaware that they were missing these critical deadlines. The commission is also spending time to find the citys next police chief. A federal Appeals Court has ruled San Francisco isnt doing enough to prevent Water Pollution from sewage runoff. The court says the Environmental Protection agency can require San Francisco to update its long term control plan for sewage overflows, especially during heavy rains. The states Regional Water quality board found the citys current plan doesnt adequately protect six beaches from pollution caused by wastewater overflow. Scientists confirmed toxic algae blooms have been found in the San Francisco bay. Reddish brown algae thats harmful to fish and other marine life has emerged along the shores of berkeley and albany. An Environmental Group says there have been no signs of dead fish so far, but the red tide appears to be the same type of bloom that killed tens of thousands of fish last summer. Scientists say people and pets should avoid contact with the discolored water. All right. Tom is 908, so, james, im looking at the gray clouds over the oakland estuary behind us. It is really something to see. Steves highs are forecast for today. Much cooler here for many here. The cooling has begun. Will probably take us into friday. Before we get to i think thursday be the coolest day. Then well start to see a little rebound. But temperatures were still hot for some yesterday. Thats for sure. They had some 90s. Concord, livermore were in there maybe where you were as well. But today its back into the 80s. We have a stray team of high clouds coming in from the west southwest and a much bigger fog bank. Some of that is stretched well over San Pablo Bay up into napa county, sonoma county. Marin also out to solano county. So thats a pretty good surge there. The combination of the two low is moving in. Two of them actually will kind of knock down the high, should take some of that monsoon moisture with it soon. But theres a no doubt about it, onshore breeze here for many. Travis was up to 28 still west southwest 21 in concord south 16. They had gust about 25 earlier 60s on the temps here a few 50s. But mainly 60s on the temps. But we are running a little cooler here. Santa rosa minus four, concord, livermore minus three. San joses four degrees cooler. So i think the theme here of cooler is going to win out as we see a big fog bank and drizzle had some at bodega bay and napa airport this morning. Monsoon moisture though, very active. Arizona southern nevada, parts of southern california. But were just getting the higher clouds here. So the high gets knocked down a little bit in the desert southwest. That allows us to have a cooler pattern here for at least three, maybe four days, 5060s by the coast. Water temps are still very cold. And so we get those 90s inland. All he needs a little help. Well the forecast got a little help. So that means we cool it down for inland areas. Theyll have 80s for a while, maybe a little rebound end of the week. More likely, though, on the weekend you guys when they start to warm up a little bit. Steve paulson, thats why youre the expert. Thank you. Well, thousands of employees for the city of san jose have pledged to walk off the job if their demands are not met. Coming up on mornings on two, the nine, the majord see ta strike for the first time. Also ahead. I told the team like, listen, we did what we had to do. Were moving on. Group stages done this is over. Its in the rear view. We have our next game in front of us and thats the only one that matters us. And former Stanford Star kelli ohara pumping up her teammates immediately after the match this morning. Next, sizing up americas chances of a three peat in the womens world cup. Well talk to a soccer analyst whos also among the founders of the new bay area womens soccer club. And mornings on two, the nine is headed on a zip trip to los gatos. This friday. Well highlight some of the citys favorite restaurants and bars and take you for a ride on the billie jones wildcat railroad. Theres so much more to it as well. Again, thats on the nine this friday, august fourth were reinventing our network. With smarter, more efficient routes. So you can deliver more value to your customers. Fast. Reliable. Perfectly orchestrated. The United States postal service. A break, a shot of the post thats in front of a mvp that stands at least for this morning, for most valuable goal post the us still alive and the womens world cup after a tense heart pounding finish. That shot from anna capita just ricocheting off the goal post portugal was just inches maybe an inch away from knocking off the top ranked country in womens soccer. It was nerve wracking for all the usa fans, but the team is through to the knockout stage. Joining us this morning on the nine, danielle slaton, who is with bay fc, one of the cofounders, also a former us national yourself. Thank you for joining us this morning. Happy to be here. Retired. Hows the rest of us are . Yeah i mean, a little nervous in moments of that game. But lets talk about just off the top here. I mean, we looked at the lineup. We noticed that Vlatko Andonovski made two significant changes. Rose lavelle being in the starting lineup, as well as Lynn Williams in place of trinity rodman. Anything else you would like to see different or be pretty good to start with . That no, i mean, i think that was what we were talking about coming into this game. Rose lavelle, shes been a game changer coming into the previous two matches against the netherlands and vietnam. And so i think her getting the starting nod is was the right decision. And then a little bit surprised perhaps, that Lynn Williams got the start. But, you know, i think it makes sense. They needed some life. They needed some changes. Im not sure they got as much life as they would have hoped, but theyre happy to be moving on. Ironically, we were talking about how much we want to see more rose lavelle sure enough, she gets a yellow card. This match got a yellow card, the match before two. So that means she is out for the round of 16. How much how big of a deal is that, do you think . Its a tough loss because she brings Something Different in the midfield and the reality is that this team is trying to figure out how to gel. I guess the good news is that theyve got time to prepare. Its not like its something thats just a last minute reaction that needs to happen. So theyll be figuring out what the right mix is in the midfield, looking ahead towards the next game. Sure just generically speaking, whats going on here . Why cant this team put goals in the back of the net . Why are we getting very clear shots . Why does this midfield seem so shaky . I if we had the answer to that question, james, we would we would all be a little bit more calm right now. But i dont know that that anyone has the exact right answer. I think thats the challenge and that its as if maybe that this team just really hasnt had the time to gel a little bit. But its also to the reality that the competition is stiffer, stiffer excuse me, than ever. And the world is finding a way to be competitive on the world stage and the United States, weve always had this mentality, this toughness, and that certainly i think still exists. But now its about being able to match that toughness and mentality with the tactics and the technique and a solid game plan. Im glad you kind of brought this point into it because as someone with bfc, who is a huge promoter for womens soccer, im sure womens sport, this is proof that the game is growing globally for womens soccer. I mean, the competition is getting better. I mean, one of eight debutants who are looking pretty good in the tournament, unfortunately, theyre headed home, but, you know, what does this say about the game growing across the world . It says its growing globally. And this is exactly what we want. This is what we dreamed about as players 20 years ago. And this is what players on the Womens National team want. They want more parity. They want more growth. They want more competition in the game. So its hard because that means that they have to elevate their game. But i think the United States and these women are willingxc to do titedd hopefully they do that in the round of 16. Lets talk about the road ahead here, because the round of 16 likely looks like sweden. It likely looks like japan after that, maybe even a second showdown with netherlands a little further down the line. What nations in particular do you think are going to be the largest struggles for the us moving forward . I mean, it wouldnt be a world cup if the United States didnt run into sweden. It seems as if thats always on the on the docket. So i mean, that alone is a challenging match. Japan has exceeded my expectation. They looked great coming into the tournament and then their last performance against spain was completely unexpected. And they just put the hammer down against the spanish so the road doesnt get easy. Easier for the United States. But the reality is, is that its a world cup supposed to be this way. And if you want to win it all, youve got to youve got to beat the best. And theyre going to play some of the best starting in the round of 16. It wouldnt be fun if it wasnt hard, right . Why do we do it . Ive noticed bfc on instagram. Theyve been putting together a number of different watch parties, kind of all around the bay area. Have those been. Oh, theyve been great. And i mean, i think we weve been south bay, east bay, north bay trying to trying to hit everywhere in the bay because we really believe that this womens team is for the whole bay. And we made the announcement recently that well be playing at paypal. But we plan to see us everywhere in the bay and were going to be continue to be everywhere throughout this world cup and the rest of the summer to love that and just real briefly here, can the us do it . Yes, they can do it. And i think its this mentality and this x factor and knowing what it takes to win at the world cup is something that no other country in the world has. Like the United States. Is it going to be hard . Do they have to get better and do they have to get better real fast . Yes. But that mentality is something that i think exceeds everyone else in the united or rather in the world. And so theyre going to be tested. They got to go. Fingers crossed. Keep the coffee handy, because a lot of these games moving forward are going to be real, real early, just like we saw them this morning. Danielle slayton, thank you so much for joining us this morning. All right. Coming up, were going to talk about the world cup schedule for some of the matches that youll see right here on ktvu. Dave thats right. Thats the campanile you see there, dave. Yeah, were right there in berkeley. We wanted to say hi to you there. And how do you. Wherever you are this morning and we thank you for joining us. And were also still following a developing story in San Francisco. There was a huge Early Morning fire at a building. It was under construction. It all happened in the hayes valley neighborhood. And the traffic in the area, as youve been saying all morning, that was a mess. Yeah and ktvu is ali. Rasmus has been on site this morning speaking with the fire chief and people who live nearby. Ali, whats the latest . Well, the latest is that the fire is out, but theres eight people who are displaced by this fire. Take a look behind me. This is whats left of this building that caught fire just before 6 00 this morning. This was a residential building that was under construction at 300 octavia. So, octavia and oak is the corner here. Just before 6 00 this morning, a fire broke out. Within 20 minutes, the building and what was left of that wood frame building had collapsed. Now, the fire burned really hot at one point. So hot that the radiant heat actually shattered the windows at the building across hours later, yoe just a little bit of smoldering there. The fire is out, but theres still a large firefighter presence out here because theres still a lot of work to do here to tell us about it is captain Jonathan Baxter of San Francisco fire department. What do you guys have to do . The streets closed. Its going to be closed for several hours. Whats the plan Going Forward now . The plan Going Forward, most importantly is to make sure those affected, especially the eight displaced, are cared for. Currently, what were doing for those individuals is we have buildings to get their belongings so that they can bring out their important stuff, their documents, their cell phones, some clothes, some shoes, and evaluate the damage to their buildings. Those individuals who are affected by this, which, again, at this time, we have eight people identified as displaced. We do have available City Services and services from red cross to basically recover from this incident moving forward from that, we have this building here again, this was a three story and growing residential structure on this lot, which im told is lot. And as in nora, along the corridor of octavia street, that is completely a loss. Its been burnt down basically to the ground. Its important to note no one was hurt. So that is good news. We dont know what started this fire, though. Yeah. So most importantly, again, no injuries associated to this fire is going to be under investigation. This is normal for a fire of this scene for investigators to come on scene, start to look at Digital Media witness statements and most importantly, the evidence that will be on scene, whether this is an accidental fire, an intentional fire. These are the things that will be looked at by these investigators and a cause and origin will come out at a later time. How fortunate was it, though, that this fire didnt spread to all of these older victorian homes right next to it . These buildings are very close together. The chief said earlier that she was afraid when she got here that the whole city block was going to be up in flames. We never give accolades or we hardly ever give accolades to our firefighters. But today, those accolades are definitely due. The first in Fire Companies in battalion chief that arrived on scene here quickly formed a plan brought over 140 firefighters and 40 fire apparatus to the scene with the goal of protecting the ford progress and the Forward Movement of this fire. We were able to keep this fire from becoming a conflagration and it could have basically taken out this entire city. Block so very fortunate that that did not occur. Well were lucky for your good work. Thank you so much, captain Jonathan Baxter with San Francisco fire department. The plan for the next couple of hours, though, this part of the street, octavia between fell and oak, going to be completely shut down to traffic because they have to take down all this scaffolding on this burnt up building here behind us before its safe for anyone to drive or walk through. So the department of building inspection is out here. They have to look and make sure its safe to take down that scaffolding. So its going to be a process of several hours for much of the day, making sure things are safe so that people can walk and drive through here. In the meantime, traffic throughout this hayes valley and even getting on and off the central freeway is going to be a mess. So if you can avoid San Francisco driving through here or driving through the city at all, that would be good advice for the day. Live in San Francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu fox two news. Ali rasmus, thank you. Thousands of front line workers in san jose will vote on a potential strike this morning. Union leaders are urging workers to authorize a three day strike. More than 4500 Service Workers are asking for a 7 wage ineasend some other benefits after their contract expired at the end of june. Union leaders say the city is facing a severe recruitment and retention crisis that will lead to worse Public Service outcomes. Just given the current dynamic in the city of san jose and really the morale of the employee base. I think that the majority of our membership will go, yes, and well be ready to strike. In a statement, mayor matt mehan said in part, we are committed to negotiating a deal thats fair to everyone. Our workers and our residents who rely on the essential services our city provides. But the hard truth is this money has to come from somewhere. If my Council Colleagues want to go beyond our last best and final offer of a 5 raise plus increased paid parental leave next year, they will have to identify which core City Services they are willing to cut. Tiktoks 5 to 9 before 9 to 5 trend continue to grow in popularity. City 5 to 9 before 9 to 5 is as simple as it sounds. It refers to the Morning Hours before work users on the app share their schedules and what they do in this time frame, which are generally filled with exercise errands, Healthy Habits such as reading or cooking. Many say its what they call me time for those whose jobs might take up the rest of their days. As im always at work from 5 to 9. So are we, right . We need to do 9 to 5, 9 p. M. To 5 a. M. Right. Showcase not exactly, but i get it. I mean, you you do something for you that outside of work, exercise. Sure something we can do it after. But hes a soccer guy, right . Well thats your cut of it. Yeah but see, i would be inclined to do 5 to 9 p. M. Right. That later. Half of the time. So i wonder why the trend kicked off the morning half rather than the evening half to get it done. I guess so, yeah. Get it done. Yeah. And so they can watch mornings on two. Yeah. Yeah yeah that two like that start. Well the giant x atop the San Francisco headquarters of the Company Formerly known as twitter has been taken down just days after it went up. Crews worked throughout the day yesterday dismantling the giant flashing sign that first lit up the nighttime sky friday evening. The city of San Francisco had received dozens of complaints from neighbors who had said the giant x was a distracting eyesore. It was annoying, but it was also it was so bright that it was like hurting my eyes a little bit. I think had it just stayed ignored it, but because it kept flashing, it was really hard to ignore the giant sign atop the building in downtown San Francisco also raised concerns about public safety. Many people are now wondering why the sign was put up in the first place and if owner elon musk was involved in that decision. The only thing i can think of is it keeps his name in the news. And if he believes that thats the value, then hes getting that. Its also possible that he doesnt know how to calculate whats going to get him good pr and whats going to be bad. So far, elon musk nor twitter have responded to cctvs request for comment. All right, james time 936 tesla asking for 100 million from the department of transportation to build nine electric charging stations for big rig trucks. Now bloomberg reports they would be on the route stretching from Northern California to the southern border of texas. Tesla says those proposed stations would be equipped to provide electricity to both tesla semi vehicles and trucks made by its competitors. And bart is expanding service next month. Bart says its adding extra trains on nights and on weekends. Bart will also run more trains to both the San Francisco and Oakland International airports. You riders, you can get all the details about the schedule changes by going to barts website. It might look like your classic craft beer, but theres Something Different about this can of beer. Its made with recycled wastewater. San Francisco Water Reuse Company epic clean tech teamed up with the Devils Canyon Brewing Company to create epic one water brew. And joining us now is aaron tartakovsky, who is ceo of clean water, clean tech, epic clean tech. So youre the ceo of the Water Company or the correct. Yes we are. And you partnered up with the Brewing Company . Yes. So we install water recycling systems into large buildings. We wanted to show just how powerful these technologies are to take something that we call wastewater and turn it into purified water. So we took that partner with a local brewery. Devils canyon, and produced this crisp, kolsch style ale. Nice it feels cold in the can. So i think a lot of people have they might know intellectually that that its clean water, but then they have when you say wastewater, they think of the worst wastewater. Yeah. How do you get around that stigma, so to speak . Yeah. Look water is interesting thing. It touches literally every part of our lives, but we know very little about how how it comes to our taps. What happens after we flush our toilets. Its what we call a flush and Forget Society that we live in. So what were doing is were just taking advanced technologies that exist all around us and were deploying them in new and interesting ways. My cofounder is also my father. He was trained in the space program. And as he often says, what do you think the astronauts are drinking . So we have the technology for it. Really. Okay so how is the water cleaned . How is it recycled . So we are usingo were using biologic treatment membranes with little tiny pore sizes that are 1 1000 diameter of human hair. And then were disinfecting it with uv with chlorine. So by the time the water actually goes through the entire treatment process, its often exceeding drinking quality standards. So its very, very high purification. You know, i think people dont realize that when you buy bottled water that can have its not as purified as what youre doing. Right. Thats yeah, look, all water on this planet is recycled water. As i tell my nieces, the water were drinking today is the exact same water the dinosaurs were drinking millions of years ago. Just we have it just recycling all the time. So all water is recycled water. Were just shortening that recycling loop by doing it in individual buildings. Do you think people will come around to this . Because i yesterday i said to my friend, hey, im going to be doing drinking some wastewater, recycled beer. And they said, yeah, for you, not me. Right. But you know what . Im please. All right, lets see this. All right, sal, i heard you were a beer fan, so were excited about this one. All right . This is the right color, come on over. Come on. Im going to. Im going to join you. All right . And you listen, youve been drinking this beer for a while now. So far, im still okay. Youre still okay. Grab the can. There you go. Do you want one . Cheers, guys. Ill take it from the can. Cheers it tastes just like a kolsch. Yeah, right. You know, i think its pretty good. You know, heres the thing. When you said all water is recycled, water in this interview, it changed my mind about it just by what you said. I think you should stay with that line of good. Right .
