Right, youre looking at this audience and they all have their faces covered. Ive heard from so many comedians who say you have to read a room to get what they want from you. If all you see is peoples eyes, i have a hard time gauging peoples reaction to me at the grocery store. One of the hardest jobs in life and here, they have to do it to a bunch of bandannas. Theres also good news to the states largest active wildfire, the scu lightning complex. The site remains the same and containment grew to 25 . This entire west flank remains the number one priority this incident because the increased threat of Public Safety along populated communities and infrastructure risks as we move further down to the south. The scu fire is burning in 7 counties from the dablo range down to the central valley. Cal fire says crews are being helped by a marine layer bringing cooler temperatures and higher humidity. In marin county evacuation orders and warnings are in effect. 90 homes at this point have been evacuated right near the community of inver necessary and evacuation warnings have been issued for both sides of one north of sir francis drake. As of this morning, the woodward fire has burned four square miles and still just 5 contained. Evacuation warnings are in effect for inverness, sea haven and olima and with that we check back in with meteorologist mark tomal. We have seen the containment numbers go up in the bay area. How are we moving forward . Look ago head not only today but tomorrow as well. Well, mike and gasia, looks like were trending warmer. Thankfully not talking about extreme heat. Were still warming things up as we head towards thursday and into friday. When you think about whats been changing around the fire zones, typically last week we had a very shallow marine layer probably under 1,000 feet that has deepened. As a result a more of a marine push that is leading to improved conditions. So heres the forecast headlines for today. Thankfully no thunderstorm chances for today. Deeper marine layers translated to more moisture, the one thing were keeping an eye on is the winds. The winds increasing around the fire zones, around 1525 miles per hour. The forecast models picking up on the idea throughout the day that contour links up with stronger wind speeds so thats the case later on this afternoon. As we check in on the Current Conditions right now, closer to the ln bsu lightning complex, temperatures in the 60s. A lot of moisture out there. Nice to see 100 relative humidity at a few of these sites and then also the same could be said for marin county closer to the woodward fire. Winds pick up especially for this portion of the bay area later on today. That typical sea breeze sets up and as we show you this, the august lightning complex in the Santa Cruz Mountains in san mateo, temperatures right now in the 50s. Those moisture levels are up. In terms o seeing somewhat of an improvement. Were showing you greens and yellows indicating good air quality or moderate. These are hourly observations changing throughout the day and remember we still have the spare the air alert in place. Somewhat of an improvement across the bay area this morning. Still have this, the spare the air alert in place with the projections for today. This might be changing. Unhealthy for sensitive groups or could be approaching unhealthy adds well. Its nice to any break we can get in terms of the air quality, nice to see that this morning. More on the forecast, coming up in a bit. Thank you mark. Wineries in the county also allowed to open for outdoor testing with appointments required. Case rates of coronavirus in that county have stabilized. U. S. Travelers are slowly getting back into International Travel even during the pandemic. To explain more about the changes that the travel industry has made, including some of the deep discounts that are available, we are joined now by gabe who is Senior Editor at travel zoo. Good morning, welcome back to mornings on two. I have to say im getting itchy and i want to go somewhere locally but people are traveling internationally. What changes has the industry made . So interestingly sal, youre hearing news about u. S. Airlines projecting things like furloughs and deep cuts into route schedules come october 1st when the cares act money phases out. Were seeing a grim reality for u. S. Airlines. In the Short Term International carriers really ramping things back up. For example, next tuesday sfo reopens the 8 gates at the International Terminal closed since april. Up to three times a week by the time we get to november. So theres definitely pent up demand there. You got to be married to eu citizen. Maybe a humanitarian trip. Certainly adds we look at destinations around the world, the mind share is growing and people are itching to just like you sal, get going. Yes, one of my Favorite Places to go may not be europe although i do like to travel there but what about something closer like mexico . Maybe down for the all inclusive resorts . What is going on there . We californians going south of the border. Interesting, a bit of a dichotomy. The cdc has mexico at level 4. Basically recommending no travel at all south of the border. Of course that border the physical border there south of san diego remains closed until september 21st but flights are happening. Most resorts are open in cabo one but maybe two are closed. Open for business but whats different now is that people are advertising trips south of the border less now. Less of these instagram posts maybe facebook posts. People are becoming more quiet and travel shaming is a reality now. People are definitely heading south of the border. Month by month numbers out of lax on the climb. But people are maybe a little bit more quiet about it. As far as deals, cabo and can kun, theyre hot right now. Not only for the rest of the Summer Season but into fall and winter as well. Heres a place i havent thought about traveling to. You say there are deep discounts to the dominican rnterest and gs in these destinations because of the competition on the ground. Every caribbean country has its own set of rules and mandates. The bahamas now for example you can get there but as a u. S. Citizen you got to be quarantined for up to 14 days. Not a bad place to be stuck for 14 days. Got to find a perfect beach but thats the reality. Dominican republic, no requirements as far as negative covid19 tests for example to land in the dr. You will undergo things like filling out a Health Affidavit and make confirmation of certain symptoms for the past week or two. They do temperature checks f. You hit 100. 6 or higher you undergo a covid19 test. That could really derail plans to stay there and come back. Everything goes according to dont test positive and youre not above 106, the Dominican Republic. Senior editor at travel zoo, joining us this morning. My dream for jrs barbeque is that its still that Old Neighborhood spot 50 more years from now. The blood results are in from a study thats a project of the San Francisco firefighter Cancer Prevention foundation funded by both the foundation and the International Association of firefighters. Joining me live this morning, the studys Principal Investigator and fire captain rolling in engine 21 someone also who is on the board of the Cancer Prevention foundation. Good morning, thank you both for being here. Good morning, thanks for having us. Thanks for inviting us. Yeah, of course lets dive into the results here. Im starting with you. This is an important study. One of the first where samples were taken from firefighters during the actual fire fight. Not this is something weeks down the road. Tell us what you found in the samples. Well, its really a unique opportunity because we were able to capture blood and urine samples from firefighters who are their on gave the specimens and called for chemicals we would be found on the fire ground. These chemicals are found in everybodys body but these are elevated levels in firefighters and thats concern because many are related to incidents of cancer. As you know firefighters have elevated risks of some cancers and we are very much concerned about that. The whole point of tests is to make Fire Fighting safer. Thats the most important. So what we found was this. Firefighters have levels higher of flame retardants than do the general public in the United States. And they have higher levels a chemical called pfas which this sounds like a mouthful these are chemicals that are found in all kinds of products. Househo fighting gear so sul fe firefighters had levels in their bodies five times higher than the United States met the arch level and thats of concern. Some chemicals are linked to rates of cancer but equally important that these have been shown to weaken the bodys ability to respond to infectious diseases. In other words,. Thats a big number. When you say five times. The amount of whats supposed to be in their body. To me thats eye opening. Captain al bah, youre there during the fire on the front lines and participated in the study. Sitting here listening to this, whats your reaction to this . You can look at it in two ways, its unfortunate that its happened and its in our blood but what were trying to do is make the best out of the situation. I think thats what this study does. It shy lights this invisable danger that is prevalent to now and this study was in 2018 and its 2020 and were still fighting fires and were not going to stop fighting fires but i think its eye opening experience to what were dealing with and hopefully it eeps up the eyes and many other industry that is have sto be work as good out pseudolike firefighters. We have agricultural Construction Business and this study highlights a significant gap in Safety Measures for anybody who has to work in the environment which does up a goo. When you talk about woodland and urban interface fires, this is something in california were experiencing nearly all year round. I got to ask you about equipment. This is two years ago. You are still going out there among other agencies across the state and fighting fires. Are you going out with inadequate equipment. Does the equipment out on these fires is not appropriate and do they need to get better equipment here . Well, the problem is that this is evolved so quickly. Incidents like paradise where you just have a town decimated within less than 24 hours. We havent had these Safety Measures catch up to whats happening right now. So this is what this study is doing highlighting that. I do know in 2018 one of the major california Fire Agencies was discussing and building protest types for a respirator that would work in the wild land environment. It got to its Third Generation of the prototype and the industry felt it was not financially feasible to continue the development of things. This study hopefully now puts that back into their court because the news reported yesterday in kansas city you showed a shot of california wildfire smoke if kansas city. So its no longer just a regional problem. This is a systemic and we need to fill that gap to provide Safety Measures. Were living through a pandemic. I want to ask you this about the immune system. Flame retardants y, they are in household goods. Already known carcinogens but when those actually burn, does that play more of a role into how it could impact firefighters immune system . Not flame retardants necessarily but more chemicals and these are out there and they some Heat Resistance too. The function provided important. The chemical itself maybe needs to be replaced with something else. It can impact the immune system. Its been shown that for example it will make vaccinations for children not work all that well because childrens bodies cant produce the antibodies necessarily to make a vaccination effective. For adults that is somewhat true but also a general damping down of the bodies ability to fight. So thats of deep concern. Five timesmount the body should have. An eye opening result to a very important study. Captain matt with San Francisco fire, i appreciate what people do and during these times stay safe and thanks again for joining us this morning. You too thanks for the opportunity. Earlier this morning cal fire announced crews are continuing to make Good Progress against the lnu fires burning in the north bay. This group of fires is now onethird contained and the numbers should only get better as more Fire Fighting reinforcements are arufing. Lets bring in fan k to get an update. Good morning. It did not get any bigger overnight and containment rose from 20 to 25 . Higher humidity and cooler temperatures helping but the scu caused a lot of damage and burned 571 and a half square miles more than double the land sizes of San Francisco, oakland and san jose put together. Fire crews in the Santa Cruz Mountains continue to make progress against the czu fire complex. Those fires expanded one square mile last night to 125 square miles. One and a half times the size of the city of fremont. It remains 19 contained. The firefighters are crediting the Better Weather to helping them fight the last two nights. Some wine makers are worried now that these fires could possibly ruin this years harvest. Wine makers say the thick heavy smoke from the lnu fire specifically contain grapes wite makers in healdsburgcts. So far vineyards further way from the flames say they have not been affected. Millions of california students have started the new school year with Distance Learning only and while theyre learning from home, there are Technology Tools that can help them be connectd to teachers and classmates. Lets talk about this more welcome Catherine Williams to the nine, thanks for joining us. Thank you for havin me. Of course so as i speak, my two boys at the Kitchen Table, both on google classroom and i asked them about google classroom and they said its way better than other platforms. They like that everything is in one place. And the colors are nicer than some of the other platforms their schools have chosen for them. Lets start with google classroom. How many children are using it this school year and can you explain it to parents because i still dont get it. Well, yes the school year certainly looks different. Than it has in the past. What we have done to help parents get acclimate san diego we have set up teach from anywhere and theres a tech tool kit to help parents understand these new resources for virtual learning. My sister is a 4th and 5th grade teacher at James MadisonElementary School in san leandro and set up her google classroom. Very fun and interactive website that breaks down the schedule for the day. Keeps students on top of what assignments they should be doing and to your earlier question, we have a 100 Million Students and educator using google classroom. If more m students this is their first real use of technology. Im sure you know a lot of parents in the bay area were very strict on screen time before the pandemic hit. How can you help these youngsters learn about not giving away personal information and actually my boys wont even give me their pass words because they have been told not to. Something were proud of and where they might have learned that is be internet awesome. It takes the form of a fun and engaging game where students learn to have healthy digital habits. You learn through a game how to build strong pass words and how to find credible Information Online and how to be kind to others. Its a Great Program and also very useful for parents. I found out my pass words were not as secure as i wanted them to be. I know that many parents are struggling to find the good in the school year. Many parents say look, if we emerge from this happy and healthy, i can talk a bit of a dip in the reading or math comprehension. Theres an opportunity for students lets say in san leandro to visit museums in new york and pyramids in egypt. This idea of bringing the world to the Kitchen Table is attractive. Yes google arts and culture is our Online Platform where we worked with thousands of cultural institutions around the world to bring online things like art, music and different displays or landmarks. You can explore National Parks and go to yosemite. You can also tour museums with a little penguin tour guide which is pretty exciting so although in person trips have become a little more difficult, youre able to visit place frs your Kitchen Table. All right, google tech expert Catherine Williams thank you so much for joining us and we wish your sister a Wonderful School year. Thank you,. A quick note for parents if you havent checked out our online resource kit for Distance Learning you should take a minute to do so. A long list of resources that were constantly updating and youll find our School Survival gud under the schools tab. Coming up on mornings on two the nine, no fans allowed in levi stadium for now.
