I literally just started receiving benefits from them about 2 to 3 weeks ago because there was this whole bottle of me trying to contact them about what was going on with my account. Reporter she will be cut off from her just received weekly federal payment as of saturday. Im nervous about the future. I was just thinking about that because i will be moving pretty soon. We just dont know what is going to happen. Maybe if they could just phaseout of the bonus instead of just sending people off the 600 with another amount, but how much, and of course when, unknown to 30 million very interested and frightened recipients. So Many Americans worrying this afternoon about what is to be happening. Thank you so much. From the federal help to state assistance, there are problems there as we have been reporting. As many as 1 million californians are currently waiting to obtain Unemployment Benefits from the state and joining me now to talk about the ongoing issues at the Employment Development department, is assemblyman david two. How hopeful are you that the strike team that was formed and announced by the governor this week will address the issues with the system . Well, i have been very down in edd the last few months. They have depleted savings, have gone into extreme debt, having trouble figuring out how to pay rent or put food on the table and during this entire time, edd, which is the department that provides on employment insurance has been failing california, but a number of us had suggested that we bring a s. W. A. T. Team if you make, a strike team to help focus the reform of this department, really bring the best from the Public Sector are in the private sector to figure out how to move this department forward. I hope it will move things forward but at the moment, they have not been managed well. So talk a little bit about why the claims are not being processed. Well, unfortunately edd that leadership has many excuses as little kids have on why their homework is not being done. It is everything from , we are clearly in an unprecedented times and there is an unprecedented number of claims that are being processed, but what our constituents find every day is, they have to make dozens if not hundreds of calls to get through call centers, when someone actually picks oft person doesnt have the answer or gives the wrong answer or literally hangs up on them, or says, we will give you a call back and they never get a call back. So theres this issue around training and staffing. Theres 5000 deaths that are supposed to be coming online to help dealing with this, but theres also Technology Problems. This department has a 30year old i. T. So based on a sixyearold Computer Programming language called cobol. They are the last state agency to use this program. And it broke down 10 years ago during the Great Recession and does a spending over a quarter billion dollars on one consultant to try to fix it, it is taking down again. Theres certainly a Technology Problem and theres a bureaucratic culture problem of an agency that seems to be treating all of our constituents as if they might be committing fraud as opposed to treating them with the care of folks who are in desperate straits and desperately need this money. Okay, how long do you think it will take for this process to be streamlined and for people who need the benefits, greatly need the benefits to actually start getting them . Part of the problem is we have been told that the administration had committed to addressing a backlog by the end of september, but when we questioned them yesterday at a hearing, they basically said they are only going to address about of the corner of that backlog and over almost 900,000 other people on this list somehow suggested that they need to do more things for edd to address their plate. I dont have an answer, we posed these questions and they did not give straight answers. So we are so no pushing as hard as we can, but all that being said, legislators have had countless meetings and private and public hearings, we have sent emails to the department, they have been on this concept and we are pushing them every way that we can. This department has been really the height of bureaucratic arrogance despite all the things that we have been trying to push them to do. So ultimately, it is with the administration and with the edd to solve this. And at the expense of so many californians. Appreciate your time. Thank you. California appears likely to top 500,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus sometime today. As of yesterday, there were more than 8000 new infections for a total of over 493,000. Reporter doctors anthony fauci, Robert Bradfield and telling the House Select Committee on the coronavirus positive news about a positive covid vaccine. They still had questions. According to the new york times, she is one of the top two, her and susan rice area and what a change it has been from the last month and in some cases she has frogged kamala harris. We talked with her about how crazy this whole process has been. The little girl version of karen bass, this thought that you are realistically now being considered to be the Vice President of the united states. Could you have ever imagined that as a little girl . No, i cant imagine that as a girl. I mean, it is still surreal. It is an absolute honor that people would talk in the way they have. I have read articles where they have gone back and found and interviewed people who have known me for years. It is very emotional and it is very touching and i think what i am the most moved by is that people who recognize that my whole reason for doing the work i do is because i am deeply concerned about the american people, period. It is nothing more than that. It has been kind of interesting here in california with kamala harris, of course this former San Francisco da, and a lot of her supporters in the past, some of them are now backing bass. They put out an oped saying why she backs bass. The sacramento bee, theyre at it told real today put out an editorial backing bass, reports and cnn today that nancy pelosi is pushing for bass over her fellow san franciscan. Yesterday the Solano County District Attorneys Office said they would oversee the case. More on this case and this announcement, we are joined by michael cordova. Thank you so much for joining us. The Solano County da, she said ramos will be able to provide a fair review. He is not connected to the case, to this area, but how can the public be assured that this will truly be an independent investigation . Let me start by saying that the District Attorney of Solano County did the right thing when she recused her office. Then when they go to ramos, who as you say, comes from san bernardino, i tell you, he comes with a lot, a lot of baggage. I think people should look him up on the internet to see and what he is about. A lot of people are going to have a lot of concerns about him and the investigation. Im telling you, if he comes back and finds these officers did the right thing with his background, a lot of people are going to be upset. I dont know how and why they picked up Michael Ramos. So what is his background that you have noticed as an attorney yourself that might be an issue for this case depending on the outcome . First of all, you look at the case, there were quite a number where juries would come out of the jury room and say, why did you bring charges against these people . Theres no foundation for it. They find people not guilty. There were cases where juries would find people guilty, and for example, murder cases where people were on death row and dna would come in and prove that the person didnt do it. One of his own experts said hey, dna shows this person didnt do it. Lets stop this. He kept after it. He kept on appeal. He was persistent in going after that even though there was dna evidence against it. This was very Law Enforcement oriented. People will should look on the internet, who and what this guy is great im telling you, its a bad choice, in my opinion. He is not coming, he is biased. I dont know how to say it anymore. He is biased towards prosecution and his background is replete. He was voted out a couple years ago, a defense attorney actually took over, it was xga, but this is not a good choice. Also begs the question when the da up and solano recused her office, they asked mr. Burr sarah to take a look at it and have him come in, then he sent my office, the ags office is not going to come in. And that, in my mind, begs the question, why, the ag should and does take over cases like this that you have boo sarah, the ag of the state, saying no. That smacks of politics. I want to dive into that part of it. I was unsure why he would have turned down looking into this case. What is the reasoning you might imagine that he would turn down looking into this . Would he normally be the person that the da uld go to to look into a case like this and that of try to find someone from outside of the area . Absolutely he should be the person, but ive got to think he looked at it, and he said this is a political hot potato. If i find these officers not culpable, it may affect my reelection. Im telling you, i would look at these politicians at times and say, why dont you have the courage to step up and do the right thing instead of thinking about yourself and how it will affect you politically . In my opinion, i think that is actually what burr sarah did. He didnt want to touch this case. It could affect me politically so im going to pass on it. Then that leaves the da up and solano having to go outside and pick someone and youve heard my opinion about that, im telling you, this Michael Ramos is, whatever he does, hes going to be highly criticized. And again, people, go online and look with his guys about. Look at his back on. Like how he has prosecuted cases. It strikes me that what is important to him, to ramos is not justice but is winning the case and that is not what prosecutor should be about. I was taught when i was a da, you not only have to do justice, but you have to give the appearance of doing justice. And mr. Ramos does not give the appearance of doing justice. This is going to be an interesting case to see what happens with the review process that mr. Ramos is going to be looking into. Michael cordova. Thank you a lot. Officials say there was a big increase in zune june with more than 255,000 travelers compared to just 106,000 in may. While the airport certainly welcomes is increased, the passenger data is a way off from last year. In fact, these latest numbers are down more than 75 from a year ago. For moairline industry, we are joined by seth kaplan. Seth, while this is a small increase, it is an increase, nonetheless. It is. The concern Going Forward is that the rebound seems to be stalling here as the cases of the virus that cells seem to be rising. There was a scenario in june where you could tell, even though we didnt have these final numbers that things were Getting Better at a fairly rapid clip. Where each week was 20 better than their previous week, then you have this surge in cases, not only in california, arizona, texas, florida and elsewhere, and that all stops. When you look back at the numbers from june, they are pretty encouraging. This month, so far they have still been rising very slightly. The problem, if you listen to airline speak is that, they have a crystal ball that we dont have. They know who is booking tickets and that is where they are seeing a lot of trimming of their schedules. I was on a flight recently and i would have to say, at least four rows in front of me and for rows behind me, there was not a single passenger. So i definitely saw a significant decrease in travel. Our airlines in fact concerned about a drop in demand given what is happening with the coronavirus . They are. And so are their employees here. Again, with those encouraging signs, if you go back a month, a month and a half, there was a scenario where, with everybody knowing that their jobs worse through september because of the cares act, the string attached to it, there is a scenario where if those strings werentof those dogs wouldve been safe, but what is happened to you recently, that is clearly not the case. So bad news for airlines and bad news for their employees and everyone else who depends on just the volume of air travel. It certainly is a dire outlook. I want to talk to you about flight. The number of flights and we know that some airlines are indeed cutting routes. Do we expect more to do so . If things dont get better. This is unusual where just on a very real time basis, their blinds are adjusting their networks. In some cases they are years out or five or four months, its a problem for the airline to move them to other flights. As you mentioned, the others so auntie, when they see flights not filling up, they are cutting what they call frequent these in some cases, so this is a route that still exist but there may be fewer flights, and in some cases entire routes and some cases entire cities. Jetblue done in long beach, it had been there since 2001, it is completely leaving the airport. All right. I certainly appreciate the extra room on my flight. I cannot believe that American Airlines actually was flying the plane. I would say was about a third full. Obviously some interesting numbers from Oakland International. We will have to wait and see what july numbers look like. Around the bay area this afternoon, temperatures dealing quite nice for most. We have it a little cool on portions of the coastline, and in portions of the city it is warm. Around the bay, plenty of sunshine and temperatures feeling right about where they should be for this time of year. We do want to check in on the hurricane that is spinning through the bahamas, warnings have been issued for areas over florida, not really expected to move into areas near florida until it looks perhaps saturday into sunday. You can see it there on the satellite view as it spins right now, category one. Not expected to strengthen as the reporter spoke about just a while ago. Winds are 75 Miles Per Hour moving northwest at 15 Miles Per Hour and it looks like a mid day or late day saturday it does begin to make its path a little bit closer to florida. The current path, though, scoots right along the coastline. This could shift. We will be tracking it over the next 48 hours or so, but it looks like it will be late saturday into sunday before that hurricane makes its way a little bit what is going on here at home, the onshore breeze is, per hour, and after reporting a southerly window 16, we have novato gusting at 23, this helped to keep our temperatures and check, otherwise some of our inland communities easily could be in the 100s this time of year. The satellite view shows we do have mostly clear skies for most of the state of california and it is a dry one out there. Last weekend we were dealing with thunderstorms over the sierra, not the case for today or this weekend. We are looking at the winds to continue, to be pretty much an onshore breeze direction, although fairly weak as we roll into your bay area saturday, and i will help to allow some of those temperatures, especially inland, to warm up. So for tomorrow morning will start out with the fog once again.
