The department of Veterans Affairs is saying that the pandemic is pushing more military Service Members into being homeless. They are expanding support services. We are joined by keith powers, the National Director of Clinical Operations. Dr. Harris, thank you for being here. Good morning. How big of a problem is this, specifically . Well, arguably, there is never a more dangerous time to be homeless. Two of the primary mitigation risk strategies are staying home and washing hands, effectively impossible when you are homeless. It is a giant problem for homeless people. Homeless veterans in particular. Part of what we do is really focusing on the response and when the people in the streets. People can socially isolate and provide services. That takes the form of hotels. We want to provide rental assistance, and things like that. The one of the hurdles that he faced with helping someone, the military veterans . One of the big hurdles that we face is a lack of faceto face care. One of the things that we have historically done is replace a veteran and housing, faceto face visits, it stays house, and not being homeless, we have seen a 4000 percent increase in our hotel visits to make up for that. It is a real challenge. So many more people need assistance staying and housing than they ever did before. There are so many slices of that pie to go around. Thats another obstacle, funding and support. What military veterans have seen and what they have experienced, lamentable impact on their life, is it difficult to reach them, or do many of them want to be helped . That is a great question. Generally, our experiences that if you present a homeless veteran with an attractive enough option, he or she will take it. There are veterans who certainly , dont necessarily want to be in homeless shelters, not right now. Forget settings are risky. It is on us to provide the kind of Housing Options that will be safe. You are right. Experience in the military, point after that play a part in Homeless Veterans abilities to sustain housing and except services that we can offer. Talk briefly about the sad thing for me, these are men and women that put their lives on the line. They risk a lot, they come back injured, and, they are mentally affected. It is extremely sad about that to me. Mass. It is. Theres something i would like to note about that. We start our efforts formally into and homelessness about 10 years ago. 2010. Since that time, we have produced better and homelessness by 50 percent. The general population is only dropped 11 percent. Against that backdrop, we have made a huge amount of progress. Our work is not done. Any Homeless Veterans is too many. We have done a lot. We have a lot of support from congress. We have support from both administrations in terms of the work that we are doing and we will continue to do it until we are done. I know you have to go. The ba has done a lot of good things, many talk about some of the services there, or it taking too long. How do you respond to that . Well, i can only speak for the Homeless Program services. What i would say is we have a full complement of services for Homeless Veterans. Everything from outreach and prevention and employment assistance, programs help veterans and institutions. A full complement of services. It exceeds Community Benchmarks for their programs for nonveterans. It is an absolute dedication for us to serve our country. I want to think of thoughts for you and for the program. Dr. Keith harris, the National Director of Clinical Operations on the Homeless Program. Thank you for being here with us. President jump is putting pressure on schools to reopen during the pandemic. Funding will be withheld if they do not go back. Many are concerned about the school year will bring. Lets welcome the head of the california School Board Association, the chief information officer, thank you for being with us, troy. Thank you for having me. It of course, yesterday the new york city mayor bill deblasio said his district will only have students back in the classroom for two or three days out of the school week. Is there anything definite declared here in california . We take a more localized approach. There is not been a universal mandate. What the governor has recommended, and the approach that is happening on the ground is that local School Districts will work in concert with staff, and faculty, parents and famili. They will work with Public Health officers and jurisdictions trying to devise a plan for specific situations. Most districts are leaning towards a hybrid model, akin to what new york put forward, involving students going to school. The other half of students would go to school. There is a mix of different approaches. Either side of this, you have districts that are committed to staying on campus. Some talk about 100 percent remote learning. There are questions about whether or not that is permissible. Again, the book of districts are lookin reported that 60 percent of california parents surveyed, i believe the Oakland Unified School district said that they would send children back to school, this class was open. I know two things that my school is always short on his face, to properly distance, and money. Money is always a factor. Will it truly be the districts that are struggling before the pandemic that will have the hardest time bringing students back into class . Is a big issue. The space, as it pertains to facilities is a big issue. Then, staffing, and the capacity of districts is also in question. There are a number of interlocking factors that will make this challenging, as well as time constraints. Only five weeks until school begins. What will we do with social distancing . Does it mean smaller classes . Does it mean more buses, because you can only feed so many students in each row . Does it mean more bus routes . You will need more janitorial staff, because you are going to have to do more cleaning, more times per day. Do you need sanitization stations . How do you acquire ppe . This could go on for months and months and months. There really is not a clear line on guidance on how they will require or implement the programs and services. The resources are not there. We are running up against the clock right now. Here we are weeks before the school year is set to begin. Bay area parents, myself included are left in limbo. We have the chief information officer, thank you for joining us. Thank you. 11 sports programs at Stanford University are being eliminated. The university faces a deficit that will only get bigger, because of coronavirus. The 200 athletes affected will not lose scholarships, coaches will be paid through the end of their contracts. The sports being eliminated include fencing, field hockey, sailing and mens volleyball. 2020 is been the worst year of my life. Im emotional because i love my school and my team, i love everything. So much. I love it altogether, it sucks that volleyball is not a part of it. It is never good. The history of the particular sport at the school, the cuts begin after the academic year. The San Francisco giants will continue summer practice after shutting down earlier in the week. Players were back on the field after finally receiving a covid 19 test results from tests i would administered over the weekend. It took four years to get the results back that were negative. The manager says that he believes testing delays will be fixed before the season starts in a few weeks. Every player that is on the field, in the building, on saturday, was tested and it was negative. That provides confidence. We tested on monday. We got a majority of the results already. We tested again today and we expect a 48 hour turnaround. Things feel like they are on track right now. The giants will open the season two weeks from now against the dodgers. Navigating a 2020 baseball season, also, listening to people talk about the terminal baseball stadium, many wonder if that will happen. You talk about baseball, lets bring in the president , dave l. First of all, a lot of baseball fans want baseball. Can the mlb pull this off . Can we get a season in and do it safely for the players out there . We have a great plan for health and safety. Team training. Arthur Team Practice will be today. We feel good about where we are. There are always growing pains when you start Something Like this. We can be a model for organizations and businesses as they look to restart and the covid19 era. Health and safety is our primary goal. We are doing everything that we can to test in place and set up for success. Picking up a very good picture, this makes it a little bit tough to be out there. Hes at higher risk. If he gets covid19, he has serious concerns about being out there. He said that Major League Baseball is not doing enough testing. When you think about that . We have a rigorous testing protocol, a dozen Infectious Disease doctors and Public Health officials have created this with the league. Alameda county has a rigorous protocol. We will follow the guidelines, we will take input from different people including the players. We will do everything that we can to make sure that people feel that this is safe for the players, or the staff and the coaches. Especially for highrisk individuals, we need to make sure they feel that it is a safe environment for families. Libby shaft said she had serious concerns about the power terminal, they said that the area there does not have sufficient transit, and it also is a possible impact on the jobs there. Some of the bluecollar jobs may go away as a result of the stadium being where it is. They say that they would rather have the stadium at the coliseum, because theres a bird terminal among other things. What do you say to that . We saw the client letter, we were disappointed that is was so factually inaccurate. It said things like the project was not a green project. It is. They said it would not benefit air quality, which it will. We are benefited definitely sad to see that. We are committed to the waterfront ballpark. Remember, this is a terminal that has not been used in years. It is a part of the city that will lead a rebirth of the oakland waterfront. Oracle park will lead the way like it did in San Francisco. It has great promise. We are moving forward, full speed ahead. We look forward to putting a show on the ground and we will open our beautiful ballpark. One thing that i will say, lot of proponents for that stadium and out as turned out well. I want to talk about things. We are going to have cardboard cutouts. If a foul ball hits one of the cutouts, you will send them the ball, right . It is going to be a great program. We sold thousands of cutouts on the first day or two. You can buy your cutout and you can upload a photo, if you get hit by the fell ball or catch it, we will authenticated and send it to your house. We have great programs with that. It is all a fundraiser for local Community Organizations like the africanamerican chamber of commerce. It is going to be a great way to support our community. It will be a fun way to spice up the games. You know what the be like this year. Will it be competitive . We have a great young team. We have very young players. We have a match happening. Matt olson, there will be a ton of home runs and the season. We have a great pitching staff. We have all the pieces that are necessary to make this happen. We just need to get out to a start. It is 60 games. Everything matters. To the players sense the urgency. We want to build on a twoyear one that we have here. I cannot wait to watch baseball again. I hope you guys get back to it safely. I look forward to watching this on tv. Thank you for adding me. The university of california will sue the federal government because of a mandate for students to go back to their home country if classes are only offered online. We have more on what this will mean for uc Berkeley Students. I have my own students were terrified, their lives are upended. Fernando perez is a professor of statistics. They welcome students from around the world, new guidelines released monday from immigration and Custom Enforcement say that International Students will be forced to return to home countries were transferred to another school if their school only offers online classes and the fall. The this is a policy that undermines one of the greatest assets of the u. S. Says, but we get to be the allstar team of the world. We have the highest Education System and the world. It is attractive to all the top students in the country. Visas will not be given to students. Professors from across the country from usc to the university of arizona, northwestern, and more offer to help saying that they are will independent study sessions to work around the new requirement. The policy creates confusion and pressure for universities to reopen. The policy is completely indifferent to the pandemic. It is completely indifferent to the impact that it will have on students who are already in the country. In some senses, it is cruel because it expects students to leave the country if there school is not online, when they might not be able to do that. A uc Berkeley Student who wants to remain anonymous tells me that she returned to europe after the outbreak to be with her parents. She needs to return to berkeley and attend classes in order to maintain her visa status, but there is a travel ban and place because of covid19. This puts is between a rock and a hard place. The reason we consider social distancing into things online is for Public Health and public safety. We are moving quickly to ensure that we offer the proper balance of online and inperson classes so that students can remain in the u. S. To satisfy requirements and so that those outside the u. S. Can maintain enrollment status. The if i came to the u. S. , i was born and raised in columbia. I stayed in colorado on an f1 visa. Olive my accomplishments in science today would not have happened if this a policy was enacted when i was a student. The the university of california plans to sue the federal government over the new guidelines and, and, harvard and mit filed a lawsuit.
