Youre watching ktvu fox 2 news at 6 30. It was a police raised that made national headlines. San Francisco Police breaking down the door of a journalist in hopes of finding his confidential source. More than a year later, were learning that the orders for that illegal search went all the way up to the chief of police. We have obtained internal documents detailing the investigation into who leaked the confidential report about the death of public defender jeff adachi, to free lance journalist brian carmedi. Some of those documents showing how far the police went to try to unmask the source of the like. It was stunning to me when this happened, and stunning in part because it happened in a city that puts its forward as a champion of Civil Liberties and a free press. The source says that journalists are protected we californias shield law. Later officers who signed off admitted they were wrong. We have been pouring through the records that outlined how this botched raid went down behind the scenes, and evan is here tonight with more on what he learned. Evan . Right, frank. I middle eastern, this whole thing from the very beginning has just been such an incredible debacle and continues to unfold, and were learning new information a full year later, and what weve seen here is that the Police Department was actually tracking brian carmedis movements around San Francisco, and then using that gps data to collect security video in hopes of catching him on camera with his source. They never did. But as they kept rolling out this investigation, they were also briefing the chief in weekly meetings, according to the former captain of that unit, and in one of those meetings, the captain said in this document weve just received, the chief even suggested that the unit write one of the now determined to be illegal warrants. Frank . Oh, okay, evan. Im just curious here. Can we talk here about the elephant in the room . There is the thought that police and the city were going after to the leaker because they didnt want some of the sordid details to come out about the details surrounding jeff adachis death . Well, from the beginning, his supporters called this a here is a campaign. They didnt contest that any of the information there was false, though. So what you have is a problem where police have this huge overcorrection because they look bad in releasing the document, and now a fuel year later, were still learning information about this, and its unfortunately being continuing to become tied to his legacy. Evan, did the police ever find the source . Do we know . They have a couple of people in the documents that they believe were the source. They know that carmedi was texting and making phone calls with face round the time that the report came out. That didnt have definitively proof that they were the source, so thats why they continued to do these other more egregious efforts to track him down by following him around, and ultimately showing up at his door with a sledgehammer to seize his falls and electronic equipment. All right, evan. Very interesting. Of course well have expanded coverage, evan, on this investigation tonight, including some of the documents that he uncovered. She murdered a young state trooper, and Police Officers rightfully so take that very personally. Reporter the National Police association seek tuesday the removal or covering of shakurs image which sits feet from Palo Alto Police headquarters.
