The temperature trend. Out yesterday and its on its way down today. It will really fall off the table on friday taking us into a significantly cooler weekend. And it is expected to last about two hours. That is today right here on ktvu fox 2 news. This morning several cities and counties are lifting their curfews. Although, some newer protests are much bigger than the ones that occurred last week Authorities Say there is much less travel. In march, in the march in San Francisco drew an estimated 10,000 people yesterday. They begin Admission High School and end up at the hall of justice. Elissa harrington is here to talk about the areas where curfews are still active in the places where curfews just ended minutes ago. Reporter thats right. Both San Francisco and san jose just lifted curfews this morning at 5 a. M. Thats just a few minutes ago. These were put into place in order to deal with protests that sometimes turned destructive. Lets go to San Francisco first where they are london breed issued that curfew on sunday after looting and vandalism in the city. Yesterday she announced an end to the order, saying the city will continue to facilitate any Peaceful Demonstrations in san jose the city Council Voted to amend the curfew after some residents argued it violated their civil rights, including the right to assemble. The San Jose Police chief has said the curfew is a tool to help keep the peace and crackdown on crime. Some Business Owners are worried about more looting now that the curfew is over. The mayor made it clear they could put it in place again if needed. We have intel about something serious that will be going down that night and we may have to institute it again. If this weekend we have an increase of protesting again we have the worries of the damages to the businesses. Contra costa county at 8 p. M. And Alameda County curfew is currently in effect until friday. The city leaders in san jose plan to revisit the issue tomorrow after seeing how things go tonight. Police are reporting no major problems for large rallies last night in oakland and San Francisco. Video from overhead showed the immense size of both crowds. The demonstration in oakland indeed at about midnight. Protesters gathered near city hall at the intersection of 14th and broadway just before rfew and supporting peaceful demonstrators who were hit with teargas in oakland monday night. Police kept their distance last night as officers were staged several blocks away. Officers did not have to move in, but the police chief said they were ready to take action and disperse the crowd if any violent agitators began disrupting the demonstration. It is really important that our Community Knows we dont want to use these, but when we do they are judicious and that we need to ensure the protection of those who are protecting our community. Oakland police say over the past violent agitators have tossed bottles and rocks at officers. The chiefs defense of the departments crowd control tactics was in response to a letter sent to the department. Two civil rights attorneys wrote about the use of teargas and flash bang grenades during peaceful protests and how it is a violation of city law and the opd own crowd control policy. In their letter the attorneys say use of teargas at eighth and broadway on monday june 1st prior to the 8 p. M. Curfew was precipitous, excessive, and in danger dennis of people. Hundreds of people have been arrested during the recent protests around the bay area. How prosecutors will proceed with those cases still remains unclear. Police say in San Francisco they have cited at least 146 people. Alameda county tax office has arrested 156. San jose police have arrested 180 since their protests broke out on friday. Experts say many of the cases probably will never see the inside of a courtroom. The difficulty with these mass protest arrests is that they are easy to make, but very difficult to prosecute in court because of the level of proof that is required in court. That is stephen clark, a former prosecutor in santa clara county. He said the primary focus of police during protests is getting people off the streets rather than building an airtight case for court. We now know the identity of a suspected looter who was shot and killed by the police in vallejo. 22yearold Shawn Monte Rosa of San Francisco was shot and killed by police early Tuesday Morning outside a walgreens store on redwood street. The police chief says the officer shot onto rosa after thinking the looting suspect was reaching for a gun in his waistband. Investigations later revealed the weapon was a long 15 inch hammer tucked into the pocket of his sweatshirt. He was a well loved member of the committee. This wasnt a person that was committing murder. This wasnt a person from all of Information Available to us, this wasnt a person that should have ended up dead on monday night. Reporter police say there has been widespread looting in vallejo this week. The unrest has led to a lot of county to call in the National Guard to help prevent looting at businesses considered at high risk. At least 50 National Guard personnel are currently stationed in that city. A standoff between Oakland Police and an armed man with two children ended peacefully after nearly 12 hours yesterday. Police responded to a home on harmon avenue and east oakland around 5 30 in the morning where a man armed with a rifle was barricaded up inside with two young children. Police say at one point the man fired out a window at the officers. The deputy chief says it was a member of the community who convinced him to finally surrender. He was able to negotiate this gentleman releasing both the kids and surrendering the without the use of force. The child or the children, rather, were six and eight years of age. A Mental Health Health Expert was called to the scene to help with this aspect. Just in time for that heatwave, beaches in San Francisco reopened to the public. Ocean beach, baker beach, china beach all reopened yesterday. This is what ocean beach looks like yesterday. Not very crowded, but it was a different story at dillon beach in northern marin county where a lot of people got out to enjoy the surf and the sand. People are still required to take steps to avoid transmission of corona virus, including social distancing and masks. Especially in crowded areas like the parking lots. It seemed to be social distancing on the beach, but a ton of surfers in the water. Im sure it felt great to be on the water again. That is augmented charge from the initial thirddegree murder charge he was facing. Three other officers who watched floyd died were also fired and now those three officers also Face Criminal Charges of aiding and abetting seconddegree murder. And a suspect now recovering after police returned fire. Police say someone stabbed an officer in the neck brooklyn just before midnight. Officer say the suspect fired off an officers gun, shooting an officers hand. And and others are. The suspect was a 20yearold man shot multiple times. The City Police Commissioner says the officer who was attacked first was on an anti looting patrol after the cities 8 p. M. Curfew. We have got to find a way to move forward. No matter how much is thrown at us the corona virus and Everything Else we have to find a way to come together and move forward. The suspect is in the hospital in critical condition. All three officers are expected to make a full recovery. Happening today, demonstrators will take part in a march for black lives in fremont. Organizers say people in the area have been calling for local action. That 4 30 demonstrators will march from Washington High School to the Fremont Police department for a peaceful valley. Los altos and Mountain View students and Community Members will hold a protest in solidarity with the black lives Matter Movement against what organizers call the racist nature of police in the criminal justice system. Protesters will meet at the corner of san antonio road and el camino road in Mountain View at tyvek at 5 00. About 2000 people marched through san mateo to call for justice for george floyd. That group gathered outside San Mateo City Hall last night and walked to the police department. Demonstrators say they hope to see changes in the way police do their jobs, but that change may not come easy. We are really desensitized to it. It happens way too often. You know what i mean . Protesters then marched through city streets to mill street park. These Peaceful Demonstrations are promising the county to lift its curfew later this morning. Demonstrators in the east bay are also spreading a message of peace peace and tolerance. Protesters gathered in hayward late yesterday afternoon. Sky fox flying overhead showed about 100 people outside. The police were on hand and some streets in the area were blocked off. No major disruptions.
