Hospitalizations are flat and icu numbers were up by 1 . Governor gavin newsom announced today a new program that would give restaurants emergency fema funds to deliver meals to homebound seniors. Jana katsuyama joins us now live with the effort to help those two friends. Governor newsom said that this would be really a first of its kind program in the nation. It would help seniors that normally wouldnt qualify for those nutrition programs but are at risk for covid19 and it will also help restaurants get back into business. Homestyle meals, now take home only are keeping the x restaurant open. Roseann meyer said her family run business has been struggling. Our employees, the very few we have, they needed for their families. Governor gavin newsom announced that the state is hoping to throw restaurants a lifeline by cooking for seniors. For restaurants to start rehiring people, or key people currently employed and start preparing meals, three meals a day, seven days a week. And have those meals delivered to our seniors. State and fema emergency funds will pay about 66 a day for three meals. Restaurant owners like the idea but say they need to read the fine print. When you deliver food theres additional cost than just the food. You have the delivery, gas. Businesses come hungry for details on how to apply will have to wait. The state says local jurisdictions will handle the rollout with a focus on independent restaurants. But the governors announcement cut some counties offguard without the infrastructure in place and awaiting details from the state in which restaurants qualify and how they will be selected. It can definitely help our own budget and some of the programs we rollout, so it all depends on what the governor has laid out in terms of who qualifies for the program. The concord mayor already helped launch a program for meals for seniors who dont qualify for standard programs. Its keeping the Public School District Food Service workers employed with a much lower cost than meals on wheels. On a normal basis our meals cost about seven dollars per meal, right now we have a partnership with that unified School District in the city of concord and those meals are about 2. 50 each. The region director says there is a huge need and she is glad the governor is taking action with restaurants but hopes nonprofits will get some relief soon, too. We here at meals on wheels have increased our Home Delivered Meals Service by over 35 since the onset of this outbreak. I talked to people in San Francisco and they say that the program could help 40,000 to 50,000 seniors in the city who are not normally eligible for cal fresh and statewide it could help millions. But local Officials Say keep an eye out for more details in the coming weeks and they want to know that this is tied to emergency covid19 funds, so it could run out when the stay at home orders are lifted.
