The National Coronavirus task force is warning this morning, the number of deaths from the virus may escalate within weeks. Needs to be federal guidance so that every state understands that it may look like two cases today that become 20 that become 200 that become 2,000. Now, the doctor predicts between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths in america is a best case scenario. Yesterday at the Task Force Briefing, President Trump said more than 1 million americans have now been tested for the coronavirus. Health departments around the bay area will officially announce that theyre extending the coronavirus stayathome order until at least may 1st. This affects about 7 Million People in 6 bay area counties who versus sheltering in place, limiting trips outside for the past two weeks. Health Officials Say we will have to keep up those social distancing efforts for at least the next month. A current shelterinplace order is expected to be in effect until may 1st according to Public Health official in the various bay area counties. The initial order was set to expire on april 7th. With infections expected to peak midapril, the order is being extended in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. That means people will have to stay at home except for essential business like food or medicine. Its far more effective from a regional approach. The order that will be released tomorrow will be another regional approach going forward. It is essential that we collaborate, share information, and act together to reduce the pandemic spread. For the sake of planning and so that everyone can begin to know that this is going to continue to have an impact, you should definitely plan to stay at home and and and and this processes and what were doing here will continue until at least may 1st. Reporter representatives from all six bay area counties involved in the shared shelter inplace order say they will be releasing more details today or tomorrow, working to finalize the regional plan. We have reached out to them to ask whether there will be any additional restrictions or exemptions in this extension. The president also said he hopes to send some of them to hardhit european countries. A nonprofit in San Francisco wants to help thousands of people who will not be getting Government Economic stimulus checks. Mission assets fund is raising money for undocumented immigrants, College Students and parttime workers, saying many of those people need any help they can get. Two hotels in east oakland opening their doors to house the homeless during the pandemic. The comfort inn and the Radisson Hotel both off hegenberger boulevard are being leased by the state to house the homeless. There are more than 8,000 homeless in alameda county, and homeless advocates say getting people off the streets and into temporary housing will save lives. This is actually really exciting. In a very, very short period of time, we were able to partner with the department of social services, the state department of social services, along with our healthcare partners, the sheriff, our General Services agency, to get two hotels up and running for those who are unsheltered on the street who are either at risk of or who have tested positive for covid 19. Now, the homeless are being referred to the hotels through many different social service agencies, and you have to have a referral from an agency in order to get a room. San francisco is turning a tennis facility into a homeless shelter to stop the spread. Bay club San Francisco has 24 indoor and rooftop tennis courts. The chronicle says the clubs told members the city can commandeer the building under the mayors emergency orders. Property owners then negotiated a deal to house the homeless starting tomorrow. It will eventually be converted into housing and office space, including headquarters for the social media site pinterest. One San Mateo County supervisor wants to crack down on commercial construction during the coronavirus pandemic. The current state lockdown rules allow for the construction of critical projects, such as emergency housing and hospitals. But one supervisor calls many of the projects nonessential and says they violate the spirit of the shelter in place order. Im deeply disturbed. The only construction that should happen is a hospital. We are all to shelter in place. And the reason we need to do that is because were facing a pandemic. The supervisor says he is looking into a proposal that would slap fines on general contractors involved in projects that are not essential to public safety. Police say this past weekend 400 people watched the sideshow. Several arrests were made and cars towed. People defied the stayathome order stay and crowded intersections cheering the sideshows. San Francisco Mayor london breed spoke first, announcing the order will be extended until may 1st with more details coming later. California is third among the most cases of coronavirus in the u. S. , with 7400 cases. 146 people have died here in california. Mayor breed also says more people did a better job of social distancing last weekend compared to the weekend before, with fewer groups of people at parks and beaches. San franciscos Public Health director says counties working together can have more effective shelterinplace orders instead of each county having their own rules. San mateo county is actually just one of eight counties in california with one of these makeshift hospitals, and it will hold 250 beds. The San Mateo County event center is being transformed to help a potential medical surge. No patients are staying there yet, but if theres a need, the state is ready for you. County and state official with the help of the National Guard have been setting up the emergency facilities. Supplies and equipment arrive sunday. Once the Field Hospital is finished, the National Guard will leave, and it will be run together by the state and county. San mateo county also made a deal with area hotels for more patients and the homeless, if needed. As of 8 00 a. M. Yesterday, the Health Department reports 309 positive cases of coronavirus in the county and six deaths. In an online meeting, lawmakers talked about the federal response to the pandemic in San Mateo County and how the county is stepping up during then certain time. Were doing everything we can to secure medical supplies of all kinds and, particularly, ventilate. According to the mercury news, a worker at the Safeway Store on branham lane is getting medical treatment after testing positive. Also, an employee of cardenas market on south white road in East San Jose also tested positive. Both stores say they are going to stay open and have undergone enhanced cleaning. Today, Governor Newsom is launching a new initiative to help with vulnerable residents. The governor will announce a program at noon to help older californians stay connected while following the statewide order to stay at home. About a quarter of the people tested positive in california are 65 years or older, and hospitalization rates are much higher among seniors. The governor is working with facebook to help combat the coronavirus. He appeared on a live chat yesterday with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, a pediatrician. They talked about healthcare workers and the statewide shelterinplace order. We have to get to the end point, and that will be determined on real data once real testing goes into place. That will give us the assessment to say, all right, for all nonessential travel, maybe we can make some adjustments. One Facebook User asked why the state doesnt shut down completely. The governor answered, it would be a logistical nightmare. Farm workers provide food for people in the country. The coronavirus has radically changed hour court tastes work in the state. The state Judicial Council adopted emergency measures resulting in people staying in jail longer as they wait to go to court. For example, arraignments are now within seven days, not two days, of an arrest and instead of 10 days for a preliminary hearing, the timeline is 30 days. Alameda county public defender brendan wood says his clients are suffering. I have poor clients, black and brown clients who are going to be stuck in jail for longer periods of time as they deal with this crisis and emergency. The fda could give cigarette makers an extension on their applications for safer products. The agency has given Vape Companies a deadline of may 12th to submit their products for review or take them off the market. But, starting tomorrow, stores will open early on wednesdays, as well, and costco is inviting members with physical impairments to come in during those hours. The stores and the pharmacies are open early, but the food courts and the Business Centers will maintain their regular hours. And costco gas stations are now closing at 7 00 p. M. Some bay area Grocery Stores are no longer bagging your groceries if you bring in those Reusable Bags. Safeway, target, trader joes and albertsons are just some of the stores adopting the new policies. The stores are concerned that those Reusable Bags you bring from home could transmit the coronavirus. Most are offering store provided bags for free during the pandemic or, of course, you can bag your own groceries. Girl scouts are taking their cookie sales online like the rest of us. The organization suspended doortodoor sales and cookie booths because of the spread of covid19. The efforts are part of the girl scout Cookie Care Program for safe home delivery. Health experts with the National Coronavirus task force are warning that the number of people who die from this virus from covid19 will dramatically escalate in the coming weeks. Now, the doctor predicts between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths in america is a best case scenario. Yesterday at the Task Force Briefing, President Trump said more than 1 million americans have now been tested for the coronavirus. Health departments around the bay area will officially announce that theyre extending the coronavirus stayathome order until at least may 1st. Public Health Officials announced schools are closed through may 1st so everyone else is on that list, as well. For the next month you have to limit trips to essential business. This shelterinplace order is going to remain in effect through may 1st, and that means you should only be going out to get things like food and medicine and only essential businesses remain open. The current shelterinplace order is in effect and will be in effect for the next month for San Francisco, san mateo, contra costa, alameda, the city of berkeley, marin and santa clara counties. We reached out to napta, solano and sonoma counties to find out if they will be extending it. We are waiting to hear back from this. This initial shelterinplace order enacted two weeks ago affecting 7 Million People across the bay area is set to expire on april 7. But with infections reaching a peak in midapril, this order is being extended in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. We may not realize the impacts of this until this is all over. But, eventually, we will learn, im sure, that because of what we have done and how we have all participated in complying with social distancing, it truly has saved lives. Reporter representatives from the county Health Department involved in this shared shelterinplace order say they will be releasing more details about it either today or tomorrow. They say they are still working to finalize the regional plan. We have reached out to them to find out if theres going to be any additional restrictions or exemptions for this extended period. The comfort inn and the Radisson Hotel both off hegenberger boulevard are being leased by the state to house the homeless. There are more than 8,000 homeless in alameda county, and homeless advocates say getting people off the streets and into temporary housing will save lives. This is actually really exciting. San francisco is turning a tennis facility into a homeless shelter to stop the spread. Bay club San Francisco has 24 indoor and rooftop tennis courts. The chronicle says the clubs told members the city can commandeer the building under the mayors emergency orders. Property owners then negotiated a deal to house the homeless starting tomorrow. It will eventually be converted into housing and office space, including headquarters for the social media site pinterest. One San Mateo County supervisor wants to crack down on commercial construction during the coronavirus pandemic. The current state lockdown rules allow for the construction of critical projects, such as emergency housing and hospitals. But one supervisor calls many of the projects nonessential and says they violate the spirit of the shelter in place order. Im deeply disturbed. The only construction that should happen is a hospital. We are all to shelter in place. And the reason we need to do that is because were facing a pandemic. The supervisor says he is looking into a proposal that would slap fines on general contractors involved in projects that are not essential to public safety. San Francisco Mayor london breed spoke first, announcing the order will be extended until may 1st with more details coming later. Later today, Governor Newsom will tell us about a new initiative for helping older californians stay connected as they shelter in place. California is third among the most cases of coronavirus in the u. S. , with 7400 cases. 146 people have died here in california. Mayor breed also says more people did a better job of social distancing last weekend compared to the weekend before, with fewer groups of people at parks and beaches. San franciscos Public Health director says counties working together can have more effective shelterinplace orders instead of each county having their own rules. It is essential that we collaborate, share information and act together to reduce this pandemic spread. Now, the original shelterin place order was due to expire on april 7th. Students returning to Stanford University who traveled during the spring break, now you have to self quarantine. Anyone who lives on campus has to selfquarantine for 14 days, including students who plan to go into any campus building or office. It requires a student to have a space with an individual bathroom and avoid areas where other students may gather. The San Mateo County event center is turning into an Emergency Hospital in preparation for a spike in covid19 cases. Ktvus Sara Zendehnam joins us live in morning with more. You can see signs drinking people to stay in their cars with windows up. There are no patients there yet. Its being set up in case theres a medical storm surge and hospitals in the county are overwhelmed by patients. San mateo county just one of eight counties in california with a Field Hospital. County the help of the National Guard, have been setting up the emergency facilities that will have 250 beds. Supplies and equipment arrive sunday. San mateo county also made a deal with area hotels for more patients and the homeless, if needed. As of 8 00 a. M. Yesterday, the Health Department reports 309 positive cases of coronavirus in the county and six deaths. In an online meeting, peninsula lawmakers talked about the federal response to the pandemic in San Mateo County and how effective the countys stayathome order has been. Our efforts are working.
