two people from an earlier avalanche, the second avalanche happened on an mountainous highway. 25 rescue workers are safe, but 20 others are still buried in the snow. . our time is now 4:32. today, the u.s. senate will vote whether or not to convict or acquit president trump on two articles of impeachment. the final vote is set for 1:00 this afternoon. the president is expected to be acquitted in the republican majority senate. this is only the third time in history the president has faced a trial in the senate after andrew johnson was acquitted in 1868 and bill clinton in 1999. the rallies are planned around the country including here in the bay area today by people who believe president trump should be convicted and removed from office. a rally is scheduled for 4:30 this afternoon outside the office of senator diane finestein. in emeriville there will be a rally at the corner of powell street and christy avenue. in oakland, a rally is scheduled outside of the grand lake theater beginning at 5:30 p.m. now, more bay area rallies will at hayward city hall plaza. and in mountain view at 5:30 p.m. at gateway park at castro street and el camino real. president trump's state of the union address is drawing criticism from democrats most notably from house speaker nancy pelosi who ripped her copy of the president's speech in half. >> why did you rip the speech up, madam speaker? >> that was the courteous thing to do. >> now, for the first 20 minutes president trump tauted the nation's economy. he stuck to the script claiming success with economic growth, low unemployment numbers. he also tauted new trade agreements with mexico, china, and canada. >> pro growth, pro family, and most of all pro-american. we will never let socialism destroy american health care. >> other is now 4:35. the iowa democratic party has released partial vote results after a day-long delay. early results show pete buttigieg with a slight lead over bernie sanders. elizabeth warren is in third place followed by joe biden and amy klobuchar. those results were delayed because of technical problems with a reporting app. bay area election officials say that software problem in iowa won't happen here because the app used in iowa is not used in our voting system. california's primary is also closely regulated by individual counties and the state. still election officials hope for an error-free registrar hacking. well, about 350 americans on two chartered flights from wuhan, china have arrived at travis air force base this morning. we are out there live following this. as you saw at the top of our newscast, the first plane arrived just about a half an hour ago. the second plane landed just about 15 minutes ago. now, the passengers are part of the u.s. state department evacuation plan. passengers on the first flight will remain at the air base and be quarantined for 14 days. the second plane will refuel and head to miramar air corps base in san diego. the cdc says passengers on both planes have been screened several times and show no symptoms of the coronavirus. ktvu's sara zendehnam is live there and will bring us updates throughout the morning. >> there's no sign the coronavirus is slowing down. in fact, the number of cases around the world increased by double digit percentages in the past week and a half. so far almost 500 people have died slm 25,000 people have been infected and most of the victims are in central china. authorities say 2/3 of those who died were men. most were older than 60 and they had other medical problems like diabetes. >> china is going to win this battle with your strong support. . >> now, there are 11 confirmed cases here in the united states. the trump administration is thinking about expanding strict screening measures already in berkley charged with trying to kidnap a young girl right in front of her parents. the alameda county d.a. says it happened at the berkley arena. a man tried to lure a 3-year- old girl to come to him. the girl's mother tried to stop it and the father had a knife and chased after the suspect. when blanter drove away in his car, the family followed after him. >> understandably the father was upset that somebody was trying to take his child of course went after the suspect. he was able to get photographs of the suspect and the vehicle which ultimately allowed officers to be able to capture the yet. this is the water year which is october 1st. the rain year is july 1st. but there really isn't much of a difference here. san jose is about 47% normal. san francisco's 64 and santa rosa 's 74. tomorrow, we'll continue that with a little warmer. probably peak is out on sunday. mix of sun and clouds on saturday. the wind will pick up again on sunday. does not look to be robust as we had last weekend. livermore high clouds starting off in the 30s. forecast model's been overshooting livermore by about 3 or 4 degrees . upper 50s to near 60s. there's not much of a breeze. nothing compared to the wind speeds we had yesterday. a lot more 30s. temperatures are about 10 degrees colder for many than yesterday at this time. high pressure spilling over the ridge but it's a dry pattern. that's companies are challenging the law and still classified their workers as independent contractorsment. state lawmakers will soon consider new legislation aimed at reforming bay area transit. the bill would create standard fares for buses, trains, and ferries. it would also require agencies. it also aligns with the proposed ballot initiative this year that would increase the sales tax to raise 100 booneboons has been known to gather around an area to care for the lion cubs. a coyote and a badger working together. those images were captured by a group of researchers in the south bay. ktvu's andre senior talked to those researchers where a large number of animals have been killed trying to cross that road. >> at first glance, this video appears to show a playful coyote and a badger on a night out in the wilderness. >> there are accounts of coyotes and badgers hundreding together. but these two species traveling through a structure. that's never been captured. >> open space trust or post originally set out to do. his team had been studying how wild life use these coverts were beinby animals to access wild land which have been cut off by roads. >> animals seem to find these spots and they use them for safe passage. you might have an individual the road just to access the habitat to go about its life. >> in this video you can hear the sound of the vehicles on the highway above.
