Its a tough morning, the biggest worry for all of the firefighters of the citizens of union city. Leaders will be just fine, they said the fire station is underutilized and averages 1. 7 calls per day, about a third of the number of calls the other three stations and counting. Closing it made the city 3. 3 million, significantly affecting the deficit. If we kept the station open we would be in serious trouble in a few years time because we would have to live off the reserves and they would be out very quickly. Reporter firefighters from Alameda County fire department, which serves union city, says the savings comes with a safety risk. The closure means non viewer firefighters in town for a quarter of its firefighting force. When we have a structure fire, vehicle accident, medical emergency, a woman who was in labor, our resources are going to be so then we will not have response times adequate for what our job entails. Reporter the city says the nearest fire station is two miles away and a small percentage of response times will increase by 46 minutes. We are not sacrificing Public Safety at all, based on the configuration of union city and the proximity of the next closest fire station, this area will still receive excellent fire response times.
