All that attic cyst showed ruptures along a web of two dozen faults inner connected. Some of the faults werent known about until now. It could produce an eight earthquake. Scientists say the new information shows the process of an earthquake rupturing other faults is more common than they previously thought and with that much interconnection, there could be longer and more intense shaking than they thought was previously possible. That means another big earthquake on the gahr locke fault could cause serious damage for us in the bay area. Allie rasmus has a look at the roads on this Christmas Eve. Ktvus Leigh Martinez joins us now from the east shore freeway with details of the maximum Enforcement Efforts. Good morning, leigh. Reporter yes, the maximum Enforcement Effort begins at 6 00 tonight and goes through the Christmas Holiday. The agency is stressing the importance of these maximum Enforcement Efforts but its also a plea to drivers to be responsible while out celebrating. According to chps data, at least 16 people were killed and nearly 350 others injured in collisions involving impaired drivers in california throughout the 10 twohour holiday enforcement period last year. Additionally chp is reminding drivers its supposed to rain through christmas, so be extra cautious while behind the wheel. One focus for officers is going to be highway 17, major thoroughfare that connects Santa Clara County to the santa cruz coast. The narrow winding highway is hard to drive on a sunny day, worse in the rain. Now, earlier this month the chps San Jose Office handled 40 accidents on one rainy day alone. Paying attention to speed limit, paying attention to the other vehicles. Obviously its a two lane highway, mountainous road so it winds back and forth. Reporter now, during the last maximum Enforcement Effort after thanksgiving, a mother and son were killed on highway 101 north connector ramp to interstate 280 in san jose by a suspected drunk driver. The chp wants to avoid another such tragedy. Now, more than 1000 drivers throughout california were arrested for impaired driving. This time last year so we are going to have a lot of california Highway Patrol officers, anyone thats available to be out on patrol during this time period. Maximum enforcement starts tonight at 6 00 and goes through the Christmas Holiday. In emeryville, Leigh Martinez. The door dash Food Delivery Company says its looking into another incident where one of its workers is on video stealing packages from porches. The latest incident happened at a condo on lafayette street from santa clara on december 7th. Security video shows a door Dash Delivery person bringing a meal to a tenant. You can see that right here. The courier then walks down the hallway and moves out of camera sight into a doorway where tenants say she grabbed a package and then walked off with it. The package had a calendar, laundry detergent and razor blades. Yeah, i thought that was pretty cheesy. Vocabulary i want to use, i cant. If the California Law and penal code changed and made it a felony to steal packages like mail, then that probably would stop some of the thievery. The Homeowners Association says in a separate incident surveillance cameras recorded a young man hitting the same condo twice last april. The association is considering a lockbox to protect tenants packages. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, door dash says its banned the delivery person who was seen on camera right here stealing items from a berkeley apartment complex. In roseville, two men jailed on suspicion of posing as a delivery person and stealing packages. Police stopped their van. Officers say they found 100 packages inside the vehicle. They were addressed to people in sacramento and placer counties. Roseville police say the suspects went into neighborhoods and took those packages without drawing attention to themselves. If you look at the vehicle they were driving, it almost appears as if they are trying to pose as a delivery company. And the thing that happens is they show up, they can canvas the neighborhood, driving around, appearing like they are delivery drivers but instead of dropping packages, obviously they are going to front porches and stealing packages. The men face charges including grand theft and drug possession. In a separate case authorities in suisun city announced they have arrested a person and confiscated his truck which included packages they also think were stolen. The Trump Administration is supporting the challenged a 25 million to a santa rosa man. Edwin hardiman was diagnosed with cancer after regularly sprayingmon while showing little concern for the publics health. The u. S. Justice Department Lawyers say federal courts are bound by the conclusions of federal regulators. In 1991 the Environmental Protection agency found roundup was basically safe to use. This morning there were cases that house lawmakers could consider adding another impeachment charge to their case against President Trump. House Judiciary Committee lawyers filed Court Documents saying they still want to hear from former White House Council done mcgahn. They say depending on what he says, additional impeachment charges could be filed against the president. Meantime republicans and democrats remain at odds over how to proceed with the trial in the senate over the impeachment articles already passed by the house. Its called speedy and fair trial. That is just what we want. It seems to me a rather absurd position to say after you have impeached the president you wont send the papers over to the senate for the impeachment trial mandated by the constitution. Democrats are pressuring Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell to allow witnesses and documents to be introduced in a senate trial. The government of turkey is pledging to continue to seek justice for the killing of Washington Post journalist jamal khashoggi. He was killed in a saudi consulate in istanbul in october of last year. A saudi prosecutor announced that five people have been convicted for the killing and are being sentenced to death. Three others are going to jail. Both turkey and United Nations investigators are calling the trial a sham. They say the masterminds behind the murder were backed by the saudis and are going free. The secretary general continues to stress the need for an independent and impartial investigation into the murder to ensure full examination of and accountability for Human Rights Violations committed in the case. Khashoggi was a vocal critic of the saudi royal family. President trump is declining to blame the Saudi Crown Prince for the revenge killing. The saudis sent a 15 person hit team to assassinate him, says turkey. To operate detention Centers Across california. The agency secured the contracts for existing facilities near los angeles and san diego. It will also add another 2000 beds to three other facilities. The contracts come days before California Law takes effect that bans new contracts with private prisons. The roads are dry right now. We know that some rain is coming. But right now not too bad, right, allie . Not too bad. An earlier crash on the bay bridge, now being cleared. So we expect the one spot where it was heavy to start lightening up. You can see it from the map. There is still a crash in the clearing stages, actually its been cleared thats westbound 80 at san pablo road. Just south of there, this is the problem we were talking about on the bay bridge. Its been cleared as well. So this backup actually, if you look at the Traffic Cameras, isnt bad at all. But lets move on and show you some of the other bridges. This is the Richmond Bridge toll plaza. Traffic here also very light. Very light at the sunol grade, 680 north and southbound through fremont, no problems here. See a little bit of fog or haze in the area. 280 in san jose, sunny skies down here and traffic is light as well. Sometimes see caltrain going through this picture here but caltrain we should mention is on a normal schedule today. Tomorrow they are going to be on a sunday schedule. Same is the case for b. A. R. T. Tomorrow on Christmas Day, it will be on a sunday schedule and muni as well. So something to keep in mind. All your mass transit options will be altered a bit tomorrow for the Christmas Holiday. 7 38. Lets send it over to Rosemary Orozco. Going to need a thick jacket this morning. Cold one out there. Around American Canyon, i80 it looks like it moves from vallejo over towards fairfield, benicia, martinez, all of our small communities may be dealing with fog and patchy dense fog. Heres a look at the system that is going to bring us the cloud cover first and then tonight scattered showers. So for the afternoon, we will go mostly cloudy, mainly dry, cool. Patrol officers were called to the Santa Rosa Plaza mall before 8 30 last night. The 29yearold man was outside the macys store at the south end of the mall. Officers were told the man was involved in a fight and that someone pulled out a knife. The victim was taken to the hospital but we are told his injuries are not life threatening. Santa rosa police have only a vague description of the man believed to be the attacker. They say he ran away before officers arrived. Police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. One man was killed and four others lost their home after an Apartment Fire in San Franciscos richmond district. The fire started in a four unit building on 16th avenue near cabrillo street yesterday afternoon. Roger says about 3 00 he heard the smoke alarm going off. He checked his apartment and didnt see anything until smoke came up from the heater vent. He said that made him realize there was probably a fire on the floor below his unit so he raced downstairs and started banging on the door of the man who lived down there. Making a lot of noise. Assumed after banging on the door for about a minute that he was definitely not there. He went outside to get the smoke out of his lungs and watched as fire crews managed to control the flames. They had to use a saw to get into the downstairs unit. Thats when they found his neighbor who had apparently been trapped inside his apartment. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators arent identifying the victim but people in the building say he was in his 50s and worked as a software engineer. We have mostly cloudy skies, maybe a little bit of drizzle but the system still way back in here. The scattered showers will arrive, the core of this storm expected to actually shift south before it moves over california. So we are likely to get just the wraparound activity going on. Heres tomorrow morning, we are going to have scattered showers in the forecast, cloudy skies, but then by the second part of the afternoon, although the wraparound scattered showers continue to come, notice it doesnt seem like a whole lot because its going to continue to push south and then push east. So that is what is in the forecast. No advisories for the sierra today. That may change tomorrow. But if youre going up today, you are in good shape.
