Today marks 30 years since one of the most devastating earthquakes hit the bay area or in this country for that matter. It was a magnitude 6. 9 quake. The loma prieta earthquake, october 17, 1989. 5 04 pm. Who can forget it . 63 people died. 3800 people were hurt. Many homes were destroyed in the Marina District of San Francisco. Thats where pam cook was working at the time. The quake also caused billions of dollars in damage. San francisco is having several events today marking that memorable day. Greg liggins is at the Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco. People will have a chance to experience a simulation and, greg, you remember that day very well. You were right there. Reporter i definitely do remember that day. I was a College Student at the time. But right now lets talk about whats going on here today at the civic center. There were a number of Civic Leaders here and Emergency Preparedness officials and of course there is this thing behind me doing a lot of shaking. Its an earthquake simulator. What they are trying to do out here is to get people prepared for the next big one. Of course many people here in the bay area have never experienced a quake the size of the loma prieta which as you mentioned was a 6. 9 and did a lot of damage in the bay area. Now to get a feel for what that kind of quake is like, they do have the simulator here and its going to give people a sense of what it felt like to be in the loma prieta earthquake 30 years ago. Earthquakes dont shake everyone all day long every day but thats why we have these things like a simulator so that people can come inside and feel what a certain earthquake maybe like and it has different grades of shaking so you can have a light earthquake or a moderate or a really strong and severe one. Reporter if you want to feel what it felt like to be in the loma prieta earthquake, come out here to the civic center. They have this thing cranked up to a 7. 0. That will really give you a sense of what loma prieta felt like 30 years ago. In addition to whats happening out here today, there are a number of other events. One of the other ones taking place today is the great california shakeout drill taking place at the Rosa Parks Elementary School at 10 am. Thats where they are doing the drop, cover and hold on drill and then later this afternoon at 330 at marina green that they are going to be commemorating the loma prieta earthquake and of course mayor breed will be there. Those are some of the events taking place in San Francisco to commemorate the 30th anniversary of loma prieta. Back to you. Later this morning Governor Newsom will be in oakland where he will help launch a new earthquake alert system. It will be the nations first statewide earthquake Early Warning system. The system detects the start of an earthquake and sends alerts to areas where shaking is likely to occur from . Of magnitude 4. 5 or greater. It cannot predict earthquakes but what this morning app can do is give people a few seconds to prepare and take cover if the shaking of a major que is expected to reach them. Something that people here in Pleasant Hill for example would have been able to use earlier this week when that 4. 5 quake struck a couple of days ago but the app is called, my shake. Its free and it was developed by seismologists from uc berkeley and is being launched today and it works similar to the amber alert system using the same wireless notification system to send out those warnings. The system detects the start of an earthquake and calculates location in tent cities and send a warning to your phone if youre in an area where shaking is likely to happen. The sensors quickly detect the earthquake and they can quickly locate it and determine the magnitude. Now come with earthquake is already started. They will send that information out. We can send that information faster than the ground shaking takes to arrive. If im in the shower i might want to brace myself against the wall so that i dont fall over. Yes. A few seconds morning would be great. Reporter the warning for the my shake at the can sent out seconds before, during or even after a quick depending on how far away you are from the epicenter.
