Typically a normal summer day we will talk about a wind coming in from this direction but as you know this has been a fire weather pattern with offshore wind setting up. Here is an idea of the topography. There is the Guadalupe Canyon parkway. This is what the crews are dealing with as the fire has been growing for the past hour. As far as the observations around the area. Does not in immediate sight in the fire zone but surrounding you can see temperatures in the upper 60s right now. 67 degrees. Went around 815 Miles Per Hour and its very dry. Low relative humidity in this area. Relative humidity close to 80 , 90 with the fog bank. It is dry and bookended to dry out, 1718 right now. A bit of a breeze. Nothing too extreme. This area is not under a wind advisory but it is a warm and dry wind which elevates the fire danger. We will talk more about this and track the conditions in the area and have more updates throughout the store. Hundreds of people are without power because of the pg e power shut off. Last night just after 10 00 asserted shutoffs in the east bay, south bay and santa cruz county. This is video from orinda after the power went out. They put a portable stop signs at intersections where the stoplights were not working. Pg e shuttle power to present the north bay earlier yesterday. All this because of the red flag warning and the potential for high wind. At this. 350 thousand homes and businesses are without power. The first phase of the pg e power outage starting parts of sonoma, napa and marin county early yesterday. Then last night pg e shut down power to parts of the east bay, south bay and santa cruz county. Pg e has not determined when power will be back on but the utility warns it could take days before power is restored. Thousands of san jose residents are without power. Morgan hill police have arrested two people for burglarizing cars in an area affected by the power shut off. This happened this morning and hill avenue in stony creek way. Police say the approached the men during a city imposed curfew and noticed visible broken glass on their clothing. Chris gomez of tracy and jason gomez of san jose were arrested on a string of charges including auto burglary, possession of burglary tools, probation violation and warrants. Both were booked into Santa Clara County jail. Morgan hill is the only city in the bay area to impose a curfew during the power outages. The church did not have electricity and so flashlights and lanterns were placed on tables. The red cross provided food and coffee. And we have the dry hills around here we can see from our yard. I had a feeling one of these days this was going to happen. Reporter resident say they prepared for the planned outage in the high fire danger. By 5 30 am, most evacuees could return home but the few who live on merrill circle, a small one lane street at the top of the hill, were told to stay put. Many homes lost power and the streetlights stayed on for several hours because they run on batteries. Orinda and other cities have spent money on generators, fuel and staffing for Community Centers with phone charging stations and water. We worry about our seniors in our community, fragile individuals who require a for example, electricity to surprised Health Support services. East bay m. U. D. Said it spent more than 400,000 on backup generators and another 75,000 on fuel beuse ofhe planned outage. Most pg e customers we spoke to said they understand the need for safety and utility call to cut power but others are frustrated and the confusion created as pg e tries to medicate their plans. Greg lee has the story. Not fair to make everybody else pay the price of pg es longterm and chronic negligence. Reporter mark toney echoing the frustrations of many pg e customers finding themselves in the dark during this Public Safety power shut off. He is the executive director of an advocacy group, turn. If pg e had spent the money we gave them on trimming the trees and maintaining their power lines safely, we would not be in this position. Reporter he said the shutoff should be a last resort. Pg e continues to say they do not take this decision lightly and safety is a priority. They also say the company has been working on improvements vegetation management. Make sure the wires are clear of vegetation and also includes hardening our system for the future. Reporter but in its latest filing to a federal judge pg e says its completed less than one third of its tree trimming work this season. Pg e has faced major scrutiny from state senator jerry hill who represents san bruno where a 2010 pg e gas line explosion took eight lives. And a statement he said shutdowns are in extreme safety tackitt not a safety strategy. Pg e needs to harden its system, make it resilient and make it safe and not make power shutdowns a go to response. But the Embattled Company warned this could happen again. We want to make sure our customers are prepared for additional additional Public Safety power shutoffs this year. We are still in the midst of wildfire season. Reporter last night the governor said the utility system has to be fixed. Pg e shareholders need to be held accountable for the cost of the shuttle. When asked about that possibility this was the company response. Because we are shutting off power for safety we do not commence a claims. In a tweet he said its hard to overstate the impact of this massive rolling blackout and he hopes the bill will set clear standards for when utilities can pull the plug. The problem i have is that pg e appears to be erring on the side of going as broad as possible and if shutting off power for millions of people, potentially, and thats not okay. The senators bill would impose hourly fines against utilities during planned blackouts and prevent them from charging customers for service during power shutoffs. The legiature expected to hold hearings on the bill in january. Climate change protesters block traffic in times square with a green boat to bring awareness to the global threat of climate change. The foodbank distributes the food to tens of thousands of households every week its the third year the marines and other military members have volunteered at the foodbank during fleet week. In dublin the Emergency Operation center for the Alameda CountySheriffs Office is open and will be staffed around the clock with everyone working 12 hour shifts. Workers at the zoo are making sure the most vulnerable animals are taking care of. Managers closed the zoo in preparation for the outage. Workers brought in four generators to bring the total to eight. Generators are for climate regulated habitats for endangered species. The generators are for refrigerators to prevent food for the animals from spoiling. Back to mark tamayo and the weather center. The wind will get out of here . Its still gusty right now. It will be a gradual process but plan on a breezy to blustery afternoon for the bay area hills. You can still see the red flag fire warning no longer in effect for the Santa Cruz Mountains but in place for the north bay and the east bay, the valleys in the hills. We could have gusts above 40 Miles Per Hour. This in place until 5 00 this afternoon and that could be deceiving. You may think 5 00 everything will be better. Fire danger is relatively high even as we head intorow because its still warm and dry and we are still in the peak of fire season. As far as the critical fire danger, that is for today. Look at these peak gusts. You have to go up several thousand feet to get that 77 Miles Per Hour at mount st. Helena and toward mount diablo. Oakland hills, the wind has been picking up. 42 Miles Per Hour. You can see that defined wind coming in out of the north and we will check in on some of the relative humidity levels. Typically we are talking about an onshore wind which could bring in fog and these numbers could be around 70 or 80 . Right now Single Digits in santa rosa.
