From ktvu fox 2 news this is mornings on 2. Good morning g thanks for joining us here on mornings on 2 Tuesday Morning october 8, im pam cook. And im dave clark. Lets go to Steve Paulson to find out more about the wind and fire danger tomorrow. Tomorrow yes. Today is a little cooler. After yesterdays 80s and 90s and that include San Francisco to many inland locations although i dont know whats going on with travis, what is wrong with you travis . You are warmer than anybody by 50. Otherwise we are cooler and that is the system that is dropping down. This is going to be a wind event and low humidity, not a temperature event. Temperatures will be 60s and 70s but the wind will pick up, not so much today but maybe by tonight, but wednesday mornincr up and by noon it really. Wednesday night into early thursday you are seeing gusting from 25 to 35 mph, there will be stronger gusting in the hills, 45 to 55 as possible. This is not just north and east bay it includes the Santa Cruz Mountain just about everybody, even over by the coast. By thursday evening things will calm down a bit. Mostly sunny and a little cooler today with an onshore breeze, a little patchy fog, we are still above average on highs even though they are coming down, they will come way down tomorrow. 7258 for the city, normally is 7054. 40s, 50s and 60s and a few 40s, 47 morgan hill, santa cruz 40s, low to mid 50s around san jose, temperatures today coming down a few degrees and overall we are looking for the system to make its impact tomorrow. 60s, 70s and 80s today, here at 5 03 am, we are going to talk about the commute. There are people out there stopping traffic, although thats not unusual. Westbound 580 and 205, you can see speeds are a little low here on the 205 already, its about 12 miles an hour which is already kind of slow driving out to livermore, it is better over in Castro Valley with no major issues and the commute continues to look pretty good in the east bay, this is a look at traffic in front of the coliseum, and there is a small backup at the toll plaza. I would say this is five minutes or less. At 5 03 am lets go back to the desk. Reporter good morning dave, some of the steps you can take to prepare for a Public Safety power shut off include things you would normally think about like making sure you have flashlights, batteries, food and water handy. Ng sure your ga tanks are full because of the power is shut off then gas stations and other shops and restaurants and businesses will not be in operation, also traffic lights will be out once the power is out. They are reminding people to drive very carefully if the power is shut off in their community. Some of the other things to think about, make sure you know how to open your garage door manually to get your car out in the morning if the power is shut down. Identify backup charging batteries for cell phones and cell phone chargers although keep in mind if the power is shut off through an entire community that will include mobile towers as well so your cell phone may not work. You should also disconnect electronics and appliances so that when the power turned back on that surge does not damage them. Pg e says because of hot dry weather conditions expect it today and possibly the next couple of days. They are planning to deenergize power lines in the cities of la mirada, moraga, parts of danville and lafayette, and neighborhoods, pg e says unless the forecast changes they will start the deenergizing of power lines at 12 01 am wednesday. That is just after midnight tonight and the shut off is expected to last at least until noon thursday so more than 24 hours. They wanted could be longer than that depending on weather conditions. Schools will likely be closed if the power is shut off, in the communities here but also other east bay communities like oakland, berkeley hills, their School Districts have notified people to be aware, parents be aware that the schools may be shut down. State fire investigators are now looking for what caused the American Canyon fire in napa county, the fire started sunday afternoon west of interstate 80 in the town of American Canyon and burned a total of 526 acres as well as a shed and caused damage to several wooden fences. Construction is underway on a major bart line project in the east bay, crews are working on the longawaited walnut creek village, the plans call for the 16 acre site to house almost 600 apartments and 26,000 ft. 2 of retail. The first phase is years. New figures show the average commute nationwide is longer than ever. The Us Census Bureau says the average american commute grew to just about 27 minutes one way in 2018. That is a twominute increase from 2009 and that increase may not sound like a lot but over the course of a year it works out to about 17 additional hours. The shift is being driven by an increase in the share of workers with long commutes, and 2010 about 8 of workers had a oneway commute of 60 minutes or more, last year nearly 10 of workers had that long commute. Recent studies have shown that longer commutes are bad for workers, their families and even the employer. Researchers say people with long commutes tend to long commutes tend to have more emotional and social problems. Another study found that a daily increase in commuting time of 20 minutes has same negative effect on ployees satisfaction as a 19 pay cut. That is real. Raise your hand if you agree. It is a huge part of your day taken away from you. That leads us to sell, youre talking out about a brandnew crash in oakland. Thats right, the 580 commute is going to be slow because of a crash in oakland and we are looking at the typical commute on 580 at 205, we can start there to show you that it is slow at the ultima pass. The accident here on 580 at 35th is the one that is blocking a couple of lanes and traffic is going to be slow if you are driving through oakland. You can use interstate 880 instead and that looks much better, then the commutover , traffic has recovered. I i want to go to the macarthur maze because there is also an accident on westbound 80 connector to eastbound 580, that is a separate crashon 80 w can see that is going to have an impact on traffic here coming out from the macarthur to the macarthur maine. Its going to have an impact on 80 westbound from berkeley to oakland, two separate crashes in oakland have traffic tied up, if oakland is your commute on 580 you need to get out earlier. Thank you sound.
