Touched off a firestorm and ultimately led to the judges recall. Your honor, if it is all right, for the majority of this statement, id like to address the statement directly. Write in open court and now for the broadcast interview, it helped usher in the meet you, movement. Shoes provided leadership already come even without identifying herself. But when people come forward and put their name to an issue, they are essentially exercising personal leadership. She says shes willing to be identified with this part of her history, and obviously has an interest in telling it from her point of view. Miller graduated from Uc Santa Barbara and lives in San Francisco now. She is not only telling the truth on tv but also in a book entitled know my name. A professor who worked closely with miller during the case says the books help cement a case against the judge and help with the impacts of the sex assault five movement. I think its really important to remember that her case is not unique. Experts say millers going public could provide health, healing and empowerment for other victims who now know both her name and her face. Now to San Francisco where 14 women say they were or assaulted by their lyft driver filed a lawsuit today against the rideshare company. As rob roth tells us, they want safeguards to ensure that what they endured never happens to another passenger. Reporter nightmare after nightmare, women reported being and sexually assaulted by lyft drivers. I was held hostage for five hours, and lyft did not even know that my life was in danger. This woman says she was last year by a lyft driver in southern california. He kept her in the car for hours. What happened to me must never happen again. Lettuces one of 14 women who say they were sexually assaulted by their lyft drivers either last year or this year. The lawsuit claims that the Ridesharing Company has not taken sufficient safety precautions such as panic buttons in the app that would alert lyft and police of any problems. They have that technology and choose not to implement the technology. The victims are calling for lyft to improve safety by requiring cameras in the cars. The importance of cameras in the cars cant be emphasized enough because video of the ride would have shown my driver grabbing my phone away for me and climbing into the backseat. Lyft is not always forthcoming in dealing with police. We have uncovered situations where lyft has failed to cooperate with law enforcement. The describes lyft responsible for her report of being attacked last year. Lyft never returned my calls and sent me for emails in the span of nine months, one of which was an automated response. I was never updated on the investigation. She says she is still traumatized by her attacked and doesnt want anyone else to go through what shes endured. I am pursuing this case and sharing my story because i cant fathom another individual having to experience the turmoil, fear, and feelings of insignificance and hopelessness that torment me every day. Lyft responded in a statement saying what the victims described is terrifying, we hold ourselves to a higher standard by designing products and policies to keep out bad actors, and react quickly if and went an incident does occur. The attorneys for the victim say hoover has made some safety upgrades that lyft has not. To berkeley now where police have detained two suspects after responding to reports of a man waving a gun. It happened at about one this afternoon and an apartment complex on Martin Luther king and 61st, which is near the Oakland Berkeley city line. Police say a caller reported seeing a man waving a gun inside the complex. Officers from both berkeley and oakland set up a perimeter around the building and detained two suspects. Police say officers then searched the complex and found a rifle inside. We talked with the manager of the building, and she told us that she is familiar with one of the suspects. Hes messing with all the tenets around here and different people on the block. He really needs some help. Police say no one was hurt, so far the names of the two suspects have not been released. Police are investigating a fight between two men, one armed with two knives, the other with a chain. The violence was reported at 1 30 this afternoon on western carlos street, police say the man holding the knives was taken into custody after refusing officers orders to drop them. Investigators say the man armed with a chain is being treated for a stab wound valley medical center. He is expected to survive. She is live for us tonight in Atlantic Beach florida. Reporter it seems that the worst of the storm has passed this area by the wind and rain is significantly calmer than it was just a couple of hours ago. Now is the storm is moving north along the east coast, the problem is going to be those power outages, the flooding, the storm surges, and authorities are warning people, still continue to take the storm seriously. Dorians size and erratic path have people in several states bracing for the worst. The hurricane is moving up the east coast and could still potentially make landfall in the carolinas. Even if the storm stays offshore, dorians outer bands are powerful enough to cause serious damage. Triple threat of heavy rain, high tides, and storm surge, there is a threat of wind, a higher risk of wind thread, so its really a quadruple threat. Hurricane warnings are in effect from Central Florida all the way up through north carolina. Millions of people remain under evacuation orders. Fema says that its all hands on deck. President trump has been briefed on response efforts and said muchneeded help is finally reaching the bahamas where dorian has left islands like grand bahama and abaco in ruins. We are sending some people to give them a hand, they need a big hand with whats going on over there. The u. S. Coast guards, United Nations and the red cross are among agencies trying to reach disaster zones in the bahamas. It seems that the worst of the storm really has passed this area. A number of airports have reopened and now all eyes are on the carolinas. Where they are saying some 700,000 homes could lose power as this storm continues to make its way north. A loving family, passionate about the ocean and exploring its underwater beauty, thats a friends describe the family who died in a tragic boat fire off the coast of Santa Barbara. They were a wonderful giving and kind and generous family who enjoyed traveling, and meeting other likeminded families. Margo, pictured here alongside her friend diana has been scuba diving for 30 years, and owns kc camp in south carolina, thats how she met this family. She remembers teaching their daughter how to dive at the age of six. This family has been traveling with us since 2013. Tia was six years old, and they went to castaway island with us. Tia just turned 17, during the three day dive trip over the labor day weekend, it was her first live aboard trip, her friend who frequently went on dive trips with their family was also killed in the boat fire. Im sure they were really looking to celebrate her 17th birthday, and im sure, knowing tia, there was nothing else she wanted to do but go scuba diving because thats what you really loved. Tia, along with her mother and father also diving with a colleague dan garcia, they all once worked for apple in the bay area. Apple released a statement saying steve was a 30 year apple veteran whose energy and enthusiasm touched so many people across our company throughout his career. Crews are testing the trains whistle which is causing sleeplessness for people who live near the tracks. Reporter the smartboard got the latest update on the controversial overnight train testing, with loud whistling on that track between downtown san rafael and the larkspur ferry. Before the no whistle quite so can be established, the train must activate its whistle while testing to alter Critical Systems to make sure that they are verified both separately and in perfect harmony with each other. The crossing Warning System must give folks sufficient warning area its the gates, lights and bells that are located at the roadways that the smart track crosses. Our job is to make sure that all of those devices are providing the proper morning time. That is, they are activating the proper time before the train reaches the crossing. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians must get at least 25 seconds advanced warning. Equally critical, the train control system. The system is designed to prevent train to train collisions, movements to a switch in the wrong position, Worker Protection zone, basically the Safety System to ensure that the engineer cant exceed the speed limit and that the train will stop short of any obstruction that is detected on the track. When all that is done in downtown san rafael to larkspur, the no whistle zone will be authorized by the federal railroad administration. It will do it sooner, than later. So how long will overnight tests continue . Be met we anticipate another seven nights of overnight testing, we will start this friday the sixth and then test again saturday night the seventh. There mere maybe as many as if i were overnight tests, but those tests have yet to be scheduled. In any event, service to larkspur ferry will happen before the end of the year. The goal is to limit the spread of things like measles. The mayor of San Francisco is launching a new effort to help Homeless People suffering from Mental Illness or chronic Substance Abuse. The aim is to get them off the streets and into treatment. Reporter anyone spending time in San Francisco streets can see the homelessness crisis firsthand. As far as we know, San Francisco is the first to apply the Behavioral Health diagnosis of people experiencing homelessness, to identifying a population and tailoring solutions to that populations needs. Spent the data show that about 4000 Homeless People face the most dangerous completion of Mental Illness, Substance Abuse and homelessness. In october the city expects to launch a new program to address the 230 most critical of those 4000 individuals. Getting them City Services and into beds as soon as possible. The first step in what the city says will be an ongoing, multiyear, multiphase process. At this point the details on what that longterm plan will be have yet to be worked out. The city acknowledging the frustration in a city that has faced this problem year after year. What is different this time this time is actually going to happen . She also said shes identified some 60 million over the next two years to help address the cities homelessness crisis. Ktvu fox 2 news at 6 30 is next with the security concern on the campuses of Peralta Community college. The storm destroyed or damaged thousands of homes in the northwest part of the islands, search and rescue efforts are now underway and the death toll is expected to go higher. 14 women who say they were raped or so to buy the lyft driver sued the company today. They want lyft to implement security measures, those would include finger printing, cameras and vehicles, and a panic button on the app for passengers to use in crisis situations. And the victim in the brock turner cases stepping forward for the first time, publicly identifying herself as chanel miller. She is also releasing a book about the 2015 attack on the Stanford University campus, and will appear on 60 minutes. Miller has been known to the public only as emily dell for the past four years. You are watching ktvu fox 2 news at 6 30. Crimes committed at the e out the Community College are going unsolved because surveillance cameras are broken, blurry or oftentimes blocked. Hundreds of cameras are supposed to keep watch to deter or capture evidence of a crime. But 2 investigates found that many of them are blocked by trees, not pointing the right way or just plain busted. Our Investigative Reporter gives us the latest on this. Call it mishandling money or mismanagement of priorities, we found the last time any attention was paid to the cameras was in june. And that all four of the Peralta Community college campuses, dozens of cameras are right now useless. Its easy to see that there is nothing to see, except the signs that cameras are broken. Theyve been that way for quite a while. It does scare me because you could be walking up the alley way, and something terrible could happen and there is no evidence. For anyone at Laney College in oakland, its no secret, cameras on campus arent keeping watch. We have a camera right outside the welcome center, eyewitness things happening right outside, i called the sheriffs deputies and the technicians see nothing but leaves because the camera was positioned so we have to choose between either the camera or the trees. We shouldnt have to make that choice. A 13 year employee is frustrated, knowing what she sees could often be missed by deputies. Everything that can happen in an urban environment happens here. To make you feel the campuses prepared for that . No, absolutely not. 2 investigates finds a crime data from crime car break ins rubbers to Violent Crimes like us all. Despite the deputies being out every day, they cant be everywhere. These are the various cameras on all the campuses. A lieutenant says this extensive camera system at the Peralta Police station monitors 300 spots across the four e. Bay campuses, but we noticed something. What are these red exes . Some of them go in a buffering mode because there is something going on with the connection. And some are just down in general. But like i said, it can be a connectivity issue, it can be an actual problem with the camera. For safety reasons he wouldnt say how many are down. Is that frustrating to you . It is, because the camera system like us it is a layer of security, it would be great to have all of them working. Financial records show the board of trustees approved more than 50,000 in march. A covered outstanding bills for repairs and upgrades, but it wasnt enough to fix every camera. And the contract has since expired, but a district spokesperson said right now the number of malfunctioning cameras are not enough to be concerned about. I know my boss got his car broken into around four or five times, he parked right in front of the welcome center. Crimes on campus are not uncommon, especially when cameras not working. Just in the parking lot, there have been car breakins and theft, report saying lack of camera views, limited amount of cameras or inoperable cameras made solving the crimes nearly impossible. 2 investigates looked at 20 random Police Reports and found that nearly a dozen couldnt be solved because cameras were not working. Instead, students, staff and neighbors pay the price for smashed windows, stolen stereos or other personal items. What would you say to those people . I feel bad, first of all that anybody is a victim of any crime. When you have Police Reports that say you couldnt solve a crime because the camera wasnt present, what goes through your mind . That gets frustrating because i would like every crime to be solved. I mean, who doesnt . For now, deputies rely on their own eyes and ears to build relationships and spot suspicious activity. The best layer is boots on the ground. Having my officers on the campuses Walking Around. The camera can only do so much, so its very important we are out there Walking Around and deterring anything from happening in the first place. There is no indication when or if all the broken cameras will be fixed, but just hours ago a meeting was held to discuss the potential new contract with the company that has made camera repairs in the past. There is even talk of scrapping and replacing the entire system. But before any money is spent, there will have to be board approval. If you have a tip for brooks or information related to this investigation, send an email to ktvu 2 investigates at fox 2. Com. There is a new development in the ghost ship warehouse trial in oakland. The jury sent a note to the judge with a very specific request. Our Crime Reporter was in court today and tells us what the jurors asked for. Reporter the ghost ship jury made a request of the judge on wednesday. After days of boring doldrums, the jury has finally sent out a note. Jurors asked that some of the testimony of the oakland fire captain be read back to them. Relent testify that he visited the warehouse shortly after the 2014 arson fire outside of the building and was concerned about all the materials inside. He said he was so worried that he asked from colleagues to followup but never got a response. Freeland also testified that he was told that no one lived inside the warehouse. We view it very welcome lee, its a note that indicates that they are still in the midst of significant deliberations. And attorney for one of the men says he believes that read back in favor of the defense, but beyond that there could be a number of possibilities. This could be the last bit of evidence they need and they will start to vote, maybe they voted on one and not the other. Or the jury could be deadlocked on an issue and this read back could break it all up. I do think that they both want a verdict and they feel that there is going to be one. I dont think they are thinking mistrial just yet, but its a possibility. Even as the defense says that they want a verdict, ive learned that their attorneys have again asked for a mistrial. The grounds for which are under wraps. The judge denied harriss motion on tuesday outside the presence of the jury. She will consider the other motion on thursday. We can actually talk about that motion at all because it pertains to things that occurred under seal or enclosed session. Also jury vacation requests, we should be hearing more on thursday to whether the judge says yay or nay on time off requests. Its been a warm day, with that tropical kind of feel coming in. A little bit of a humid pattern setting up, so we have the fog at the surface and then some high clouds moving in from the south. Thats why it feels a bit muggy. Take a look at the highs this afternoon, still pretty warm, showing some 90s in fairfield, Travis Air Force base was the hotspot, 99 degrees. Santa rosa, 91, oakland 97, and San Francisco in the upper 60s. We have the fog hanging out near the coastline, its kind of been the constant, and take a look here, weve had some tropical clouds moving from the south. And that triggered a few iceland showers across portions of the north bay. Right now we have the sierra thunderstorms kicking on out and we have the fog to deal with on the coast in your portions of the bay. Current numbers, we still have some 90s to report out toward fairfield and concord. Livermore 84, oakland 70, and San Francisco in the upper 50s. Here is our live camera, just up above that fog layer looking out toward San Francisco and the east bay. If you are not in the fog, its another warm to hot evening. What about the thunderstorm threat . We are showing you a profile of the atmosphere, and up above there are a few showers and thunderstorms primarily up above 15,000 feet or so. Drive for the lower levels, and our main concern is this, that the showers develop, but the rainfall will not make it to the ground, and that can lead to some dry lightning. Thankfully, things are pretty quiet here in the bay area for today. This area of low pressure wants to stick around, today we had the high clouds moving in from the south, and as we take this into this forecast for tomorrow, a bit of a cool down 60s, 70s and 80s, and a few spots right around 90 degrees. Forecast lows tomorrow, another mild start, mid50s to mid 60s. The fog near the coast and portions of the bay, into the afternoon hours, forecast highs for the mid60s to write around 90 degrees with partly to mostly sunny skies, good still has some patchy coastal fog. Santa rosa 86, fairfield right around 90, east bay neighborhoods, 88, livermore 89, san jose will go to 82 degrees, and in San Francisco you might be hearing the fog horns tomorrow morning with temperatures on track to reach the upper 60s. Look ahead, your five day, we will continue to cool things off into friday, and especially saturday. It looks like Mother Nature will help us out with cooling temperatures as we head toward the weekend. Will San Jose Police officers are on a camping trip with some southbay schoolchildren as part of a new program area the students from arbuckle elementary were headed to the mountains today, and for many of them it was the first overnight camping trip ever. The goal is to give the children a chance to briefly get out of their high crime neighborhood and enjoy that rate outdoors. When i first came here i was like what, like oh my gosh, pretty emotional. On our way here there were several kids that said ive never seen the mountains before. Police say the camping trip is just the first of many to help kids experience new adventures. The program is also designed to improve the sometimes tense relationship between young people and police. I just love that story. Heres where to watch ktvu plus on your tv. Marcus and with sports, we find out about jimmy garoppolo. I almost thought you were going to talk about Antonio Brown. We are going to put him behind the scenes a little bit. Everybody is a tired of the preseason and tired of the talk, its time to play football. But until they do, where are you going to go . Its all about health, we know that with the nfl, but we also know that its the third year for the combination of john lynch and Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers, and injuries, and that guy, dealing with the ankle situation, and jimmy g, two weeks shy of one year since he tore his acl back in kansas city in the third regular season game. We know those guys have to stay healthy, and if they do, that relieves a little bit of the pressure off that combo of lynch and shanahan. But the time is now, to win. And jimmy g, hes not concerned about it. I think the pressure is coming from ourselves. We have a pretty High Standard in the locker room. The guys hold each other accountable. This year its more evident since ive ever been here. We have leaders, we have guys Holding People accountable. And taking charge, so i think we will put more pressure on ourselves and anyone else is. Meanwhile, different day, same old Antonio Brown, making some news, and pretty much the same situation. Somethings going to give, you mark my words, at some point this season there will be a major fallout. Youve got the Good Cop Bad Cop thing going on with lynch and the general manager, Antonio Brown, the latest installment concerns brown posting on social media, a letter from that general manager, informing him that he had been all that time he cant get away with that. The raiders, to their credit, kept it all in house, they were not making it public read but brown responded with what i would call an unintelligible social media post, and here is what i would call that candy coated response to it all. He definitely raises everybodys game, he raises my game, he makes me a better player. He makes me push and strive beyond a different level. If thats possible, at that moment. So he does that for everybody. If he plays, he does it read that remains to be seen. We will see he will probably get out there and catch 200 yards of derek cars passes. Meanwhile, yesterday we had the story of jarret goff becoming the highest paid quarterback, today we have a new highest paid running back him you see him coming in from cabo, ezequiel elliott, hes held that most of preseason, and finally made it to that dallas camp today because they agreed on a contract with a sixyear 90 million extension. 50 million of that is guaranteed.
