Hitched to the local watering hole, you know you are not in San Francisco anymore. Today our zip trip has brought us to beautiful clayton, california. My producers wanted me to play old town road. Ignacio valley road is what you take and head east. What a morning it is. The city is about four square miles but they pack an awful lot of heart and soul into it. Clayton got big not too long ago. There was a big coal mining boom. This town was incorporated in 1964. Half the town is here where they are setting up lounge chairs. It is a really cool town because you are not too far out of the city, but you are kind of in back country here. They hold onto your western roots. As a kid i grew bay. My dad was a contractor and we came through clayton. The steak was great, the calimari was the best. That was your pay for the day. Lets give you the cast of characters today to say. Lets kick it off with sal. A taste of the town. Sal is already at a bar. He said the clayton club will check in. Steve paulsen, the unofficial mayor of the town. He lived here for ten years so steve who delivered a great weather day. We will chat with him and find out more about clayton and Claudine Wong is at the bocce courts. She has her Hometown Hero and those have been a real source of goodness. There is a can do attitude in the city. People said i dont know if i could make it out to clayton yet. It started with the pioneers and the coal miners. The ranchers, the farmers, a lot of which are still here. Here is clayton. 94517 on our zip trip. Located at the foot of mount diablo in contra costa county, clayton is a charming city. With a rich history. It was founded in joe clayton, a successful Business Owner and landowner. Mining turned into farming, ranching, in 1964, his ranches were replaced by homes, residents voted to incorporate the city. Clayton is now home to more than 12,000 people. And its history still reflects in its buildings. The citys post office established way back in 1861 is one of californias oldest still operating today. Some businesses downtown are modern renditions. Mining town architecture. Clayton is known for its mediterranean climate. The city is home to a popular bocce ballpark. It attracts thousands of players every season. Well take you to the bocce course in a second. When you throw a party, you invite a group of people and they bring their friends. We have our friends, the drum line from charter valley high school. So is Claudine Wong. Reporter good morning. Yes. It is a party out here, we will make our way to the bocce court pretty soon. But we couldnt not spend a little time here. We have the drum line. They showed up to be a part of this. They have been practicing all summer long. They tell me they have had a couple of 12hour days which is pretty amazing. Then we go over here. They are not to be outdone by the cheer leaders. We have the head coach of the varsity squad. How much have they been practicing . Quite a bit. Reporter when you heard we were coming to town, you cant have these girls being left out. You cant have clayton represented without Clayton Valley High School Football team and cheer leading team. Reporter this group will see them all. We hope you have a great season ahead of you. It is super fun to watch out here. We have the Football Team here. So, we have to give them away. Hey guys. Yeah. So, the Football Team cant be outdone. We have all members of the varsity. They are out here as well. And we have the kids out here too. It is really a great event. We are so excited to spend time with everyone in clayton. What a welcome we have gotten. Well send it back to you guys. All right, thanks for that. Years ago i used to wrestle. Clayton valley high when it was a high school and not a Charter School won the california state wrestling championship. I could list all of them but i wont. Should we bring those guys back for in the summer and there is no better t clayton. Im talking a real book with pages. Nothing says it better than the Clayton Community library foundation. They built their own library because nobody else was going to do it for them. There is a fundraiser happening in late october. 25, 26, 27 of october. The fall used book sale put onto the Clayton Community library foundation. The foundation was formed back in 1989. They have raised untold amounts of money for books, electronics, furniture. The things that make a library. Plus, the people of the foundation are incredible. Some people have donated more than 500 hours of their work. Well have more on the Clayton Library foundation. First, we have to go to a bar. This is one of the oldest bars in california. It kicked off in the 1870s , the clayton club saloon. That is where we find sal at this hour. Reporter yeah, i made a new friend. Im in front of the clayton club saloon. People are out. I have to love this clayton town. People are already out here now. Some people rode their horses. Some of these ladies rode their horses here to the clayton club. And i want to ask one of the employees here, rebecca who works at the clayton club, first of all, whats it like to come here and get a drink . Well, i think it is the best thing ever of course. Because i work here. But, this place has really become home to a lot of people that live in clayton and also dont live here. Horses are still welcome around town. My friends and i love to ride here. It is just a great place to be. Reporter thank you rebecca. Later on, i will show you what i did when i came to clayton a little earlier to try some of the food, they have some nice restaurants. They have some great places to get a drink or coffee. And, we are also going to talk about this establishment which has been here for a while. Lets go back to you at the grove. Okay. See you in a minute, sal, very good. Just a short time at the grove, we have met the first mayor of clayton. 98 years old. We introduce you to the unofficial mayor of clayton. Meteorologist Steve Paulson. I lived here about ten years. And, this is amazingly rare for august. It can get very open right when we signed on. Whats nice about this community is a small town feel. What i miss a lot, five minutes walking trail. Mount diablo. And you mentioned the mines. The old diamond mines. I miss that part of it because you were just so close to getting on a trail around here. A small town feel. Because it is pretty small. But everyone knows your name for a number of reasons. Everyone knows your name if you are going over to eds or the clayton club where sal is. You get to know everybody pretty fast. Thats what you do miss, the small town feel. Concerts in the park saturday night. At the time i think you take it for granted. My concern is the wild fire. We had one in this area about a week ago. I imagine this cooler weather is good news on the fighting front. Absolutely. Marsh creek road, that will take you out to antioch and brentwood. Thats a concern. I have seen it come over the backside of mount diablo. That is a big concern this time of year. It doesnt get that windy unless it is an east wind or a northeast wind. And it howls coming down from the Black Diamond and diablo. Years ago there were vineyards. Some of the early wine yards were right here. The building is still in place. I believe the Police Station is there. We have so much more to talk about. You learned a lot about clayton not too long ago. People certainly know their history. Two guys had to flip a coin to find out. We have more on our zip trip trivia coming up. Stay with us. Stay with us. [ music ] rhythm and blues, rockabilly. You put in the ingredients, and, they stir it up. They play at the art wine festival. Chili cook off, and the clayton club saloon. They have a good benefit coming up for a place that is thousands of miles away. Their hearts are in clayton, their minds are elsewhere. We are taking our zip trip to clayton this morning here at the grow. Eric, rex, jodi, bob, and john. Everyone is jamming here. I think they have a good thing going. They do. Clayton has been around since 1857. Two men founded this town and had a little issue. They couldnt figure out what to call the town. We will find out now a little zip trip trivia. True or false . The city of clayton actually was named when the two founders had to flip a coin . True. How come . I have no idea. But you are going with it . Im going with it. And youre right. The guys name was charles ryan. So you guys would have been . Ryantown. Ryanville. Long before the napa valley started growing grapes, there were grapes here . There have been horses a long time. Do you see any . No, i dont. Were you looking for them . Yeah. We actually have an old sherry distillery that was here be from back in the day that has been turned into the Police Station. Have you had some cabernet . Shot in contra costa county. Much of it shot right here in clayton and it featured an actor that went onto win three academy awards. Do you know who it is . She doesnt dig our ways. The only one im assuming is a classic the only racer i know we beginning to play games . Oh, clint paul newman . Jack nichelson. Easy writer. It was directed by harvey burman. True or false, the coal Mining Industry got so big they almost changed the name of mount diablo to coal hill. I would say that is false. True. True . How come . Because legislators are always wanting to change things that dont need changed. Its actually true. You got me. You imagine . It would be the coal hill valley. Mining is a big part of it. The historical society, they have a museum here, he did is o theres a lot to do. A lot to see. After all that you need a good drink. So we sent our Sal Castaneda to take a sip and taste of the town. We will introduce you to what he found in just a minute. Stay with us here on the 9. We are in clayton taking you to the latest zip trip in the gorgeous east city. The sun came out. The temperature went up about 10 degrees. Maybe 20. Well have a lot more in a second. First we have to get back to the news of the day. Dave clark is covering a big fire in oakland. Oakland fire crews still at the scene of the Early Morning warehouse fire. A deputy fire chief confirmed that it is used by an artisan coop. The fire reported just before 6 30 this morning. The deputy fire chief said there were 37 individual spaces in that billing for different artists including metal crafting and wood shop. It is important to point out with the ghost ship fire, trial, jury, deliberating, still now, authorities dont believe this building is another ghost ship. Officials are working with the Property Managers who say this building was only used during business hours. And no one was living there when the fire started. But, this fire did bring ck memories of the ghost ship fire disaster as people were driving by. Thats what made me drive way over here. You know. Its sad. Every time i Start Talking about it i want to cry. It doesnt matter if you know somebody in it or not. Just the fact that its people. At this point, no injuries were reported. Firefighters tried to go inside the building when they first arrived but the flames were just too strong. Now the fire grew to taking a defensive approach. Still no word on how the fire started. But, we expect to get an update on the situation on the news at noon, so make sure you join us then. Now, lets go back to Gasia Mikaelian and Frank Somerville in our zip trip in clayton. Thanks dave. Well, we will introduce you to the vice mayorment she has been a part of clayton since 1984. She was mayor one time. City council member, planning commission, you had a lot to do with transportation at contra costa county. The mother of two eagle scouts. I have a feeling you love this town. I love this town. Welcome to clayton, a little bit of paradise in contra costa county. Talk about holding onto your small town western roots. Once you make a right han turn onto clayton road, you transform. We do. Your Blood Pressure drops at least ten pointsment maybe more than that when you drive past the city limits. There is just a feeling of im home. Im back to a real Peaceful Place that is all about family. And community. This community is run by volunteers. We have a small budget. And every good activity in town, you met some of them already. Our volunteers. And thats how things get done here. Now, when you join the city council back in 1992, i imagine there were not many people who were ridiculous enough to live in clayton and work in San Francisco. In mountain view. In sunnyvale. There were a lot. Do you see that phenomenon changes . Now thats the norm. Before it was a crazy commute. Now its what we do. Its what we do. It is literally what we do and why we are working on transportation solutions. A lot of people still commute. We are an aging population in clayton. A lot of people do work from home after they retired from some of the big corporations. We can shorten that community. And improve the air quality and the quality of life for our residents. I like your note on the Blood Pressure. Because you really do feel like you are in a nice little western town. Lets talk about housing. Because, its not cheap to live in clayton. Its not cheap to live anywhere in the bay area. But the median price is 860,000. Thats right. But they are not Million Dollars houses yet. There are some. But yeah. 860 is half of what some other cities. How important is housing and Affordable Housing to the city of clayton . I think it is very important. There are some folks in town who dont really want any change at all. I happen to have kids who live here in clayton. I say kids but they are my gran live here. I would love for them to be able to afford to live in clayton. Now, that is becoming more and more difficult. So thats a challenge we are trying to face together as a council. You said its an aging community. A lot of farmers, a lot of ranchers, used to be orchards out here. A lot of people come and they stay. They do. Once people find this little piece of paradise, they dont want to leave. I think the cats out of the bag today. I think so. I think so. And thats okay. We are a very welcoming community. An we have activities all yearlong that people can enjoy a little piece of clayton even if they cant afford to live here. What is your biggest hope for clayton . My hope for clayton is that we can continue to add housing, add amenities where our children and grandchildren can continue to grow up and be the community that welcomes everyone. Youre a bocce play tier arent you . Actually im not. But im a huge supporter of the bocce fest. My schedule is busy enough. I cant give up a whole night every week. But i love the bocce. Well be down there for the grand opening tonight. It has really been wonderful for this community. We are so thrilled to have the bocce courts. Thats a great segway into our next segment vice mayor, thanks for joining us. Thank you for coming to clayton and experiencing our little piece of paradise. Absolutely. Speaking of bocce, Claudine Wong was out and about, about a week ago. They have new courts and we will tell you how they got built. We are zip tripping to clayton. Stay right there. Right there. California phones offers free specialized phones. Like cordless phones, phone ringing big button, and volumeenhanced phones. Get details on this state program. Call or visit one. You know i love a good Farmers Market. I will meet you tomorrow at 10 00 a. M. For the saturday Farmers Market. I heard well thanks tothe relics for bringing us in. It is 5 00 somewhere. Somewhere. Somewhere it is 5 00. But it is 9 30ish. And sal has found one of the oldest bars in california. Its called the clayton club. Lets kick it off with sal. Reporter good morning to you. You know this bar has been here operating since the 1870s. And, it is hopping right now. It was the clayton club, just a few, maybe even a half block where you are from the grove. I want to bring in the owner of the clayton club. That is steve barton. Thanks for opening up a little early for us. Its a pleasure. Reporter when other people started coming here in 1870, did the place look almost the same . Originally, it was a hotel. But it burned down in the 1890s. This was built around 1898. It has been continuously operated since that time. And the people who come here are aware of the history. Tell me a little bit more about the drinks you make. I hear you make a pretty mean bloody mary. You cant get a taste of clayton without trying one of our bloody maries. But the history is on the inside of the room. You cant look up, down, or sideways without seeing real clayton history. Thank you very much steve. Steve and i will be here and taking a look for you. But, when i came to clayton, my assignment is to try some of the restaurants. Now, there are a lot of restaurants here. I found two that i really liked and the taste of clayton. We again at la veranda cafe. They wanted a place to make it easy to stay in town to have a quality meal. Maybe they come here for the appetizers made with fresh seasonal ingredients. I tried the grilled figs stuffed with cheese wrapped in pancetta. Then the grilled shrimp also wrapped in pancetta. I tried the lasagna. The sauce is lobster bisque sauce. Reporter it is the key to makeing the dish rich and complex. Tried the bake halibut served with a side of fresh vegetables. It makes pizza, too. It is one of the most popular lunch items. Dont forget dessert. Strawberries, fresh whipped cream. And a secret ingredient i couldnt figure out. I couldnt tell what it is. I have to go back in. This is a hit with locals. Someone who comes here to celebrate milestones. We come here to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. The people are great. The food is good too. Really goo since they opened about 15, 16 years ago. Reporter right across the street is eds mudville grill. If you have ever been to ed, its a lot like cheers where people remember your name. Sometimes you want to go where Everybody Knows your name reporter ive been here a few times and the locals make me feel welcome. I like to talk sports because there are old school jerseys on display an sports op tv all day long. If you are a beer gal, you can get your craft beers. Food, it has classic favoriting like hamburgers, mac and cheese, and fries, and a lot of sandwiches. We saw a lunch crowd inside and outside. Im told friday nights here are especially popular. The owner says the key to his long time success is simple. Good, friendly service. You start out with hospitality. And you just make friends every day. Every day, connect the dots with people. Ask them where they are from. Just form friendships. Reporter i have to give an Honorable Mention to skipalinis pizza. A lot of other stuff to eat here as well. This bar, almost everyone who lives here at one point or another has come through to say hi. Everyone knows each other. A little later Steve Paulson, yes, that Steve Paulson and i, will be inside checking out the place just for you. Lets go back to you now. Perfect. Very good. I have never been to the clayton club. You are back because this in a lot of respects is your town. In the couple of hours we have been here, we went from needing jackets to feeling okay toe needing a cooling fan. This is a study in extremes. Very much in extremes but very fortunate. On this day with the cloud cover. When i moved here in 2006, it was 110 or something in july. I thought oh my gosh, what did i get myself into . And there were also days it snowed. You wake up and there is snow all the way down parts of the valley. It does happen here. A lot of people judge it and the snow level coming down mount diablo. Close to the napa valley. If venever been up to oakhurst. I know its a trek, but come to oakhurst. I used to belong to the tennis team there. And everybody who comes out here for the first time sit theres and looks and just cant believe the view. Go up there, maybe check it out. It is worth it. You get to see the backside of diablo. Spectacular. Sometimes when you talk about a small city, and clayton is small. 12,000 people. Some people might not think that it is going to be very welcoming right . Tell me about the welcoming spirit that does exist here. Oh my gosh, unbelievable. You can show up and somebody will say hello. Great hiking too. Unbelievable. Look, if you are by mount tam or mount hamilton, trails, can go way back, way back. Weather wise . Weather wise is perfect. We are under cloudy skies. This is rerare for in august. I started with a down jacket. Now im ready for a tank top. Thanks steve. See you at the bar in a few. Very so have beeing about the bocce ball courses and the sport itself is great, yes, but when you talk about the credible energy that it took to make it happen in the city of clayton, it is better. Claudine wong, tell us how it came to be. Reporter well really an amazing story out here. You take a look and you see all these people out here, we thought we might be alone because they just opened the bocce course but we are not alone. This is a community, a place where they gather. Its the story of how it was created is all about community. Oh thats so fast. Reporter fair to say hitting the back wall in bocce is not the goal. But i never played before. If there was a place to learn, it is clayton because this is kind of the land of bocce. The red ball, the small ball. You try to get as close as you can to that. Reporter it wasnt always this way. Five years ago, a group got together to build some courts. Never picked up a bocce ball before the courts were built. Now i find myself down here two, three nights a week. Reporter and hes not the only one who came to play. We have 180 teams. Ten players on a team. 1800. Of that, 300 play on multiple teams. Looking at individuals, about 1500. And so, a little more than half are from clayton. Reporter in a town of this size, that means about one in every 15 people who live in clayton plays bocce. But, this is not just a story about that little red ball and the quest to cozy up to it. Yep. Thats in. E epory about community and about what it took to get these courts here. Biggest way new players get in is working onto somebody elses. Reporter ed and his wife fell in love with bocce back in 2001 and thought it would be great for clayton. But three different attempts over more than a decade failed. Then ed hartley got an offer from the local pizza place offering land an a financial contribution on the condition that ed and the volunteers of the clayton business and Community Association would run it. What was here was a vacant lot. The Gibson Family was never going to build anything on it. Reporter in 2014, the vacant lot was transformed into the ipson sam lee bocce park. That money goes back to maintenance and back to the community. And, the waiting list is long with about 500 names on it. The oldest player is 98. I think we have a 12yearold or a 13yearold playing. We have people playing who are blind. It has brought people together. It there is something in Common People have and thats playing bocce. Reporter it took a village or in this case a town to get the ball rolling. Beautiful. Look at that. Reporter fair to say, things have lined up pretty well. All right, theres still playing out here. Kind of showing off. It is not as easy as it looks. Theres the little red ball as they switch it is used by the people who are so excited to have it here. They are having a little party to celebrate the reopening and i can tell you people have been chomping at the bit to get back on the court. All they do for this community, we will talk to a member coming up in just a few minutes about the work they do. And we are talking schools, scholarships, community events, oktoberfest. And we will talk to them coming up in just a bit. I have played it is like tailgating with throwing balls in between. It is a big coming up, thwe zip trip to clayton. Stay right there. Ht there. Zip trip has found us in clayton, california, really a world away. Nothing is better in the summertime than getting under a tree with a good book and the people here have made that possible. I want you to meet the head of the Clayton Community library foundation. Jeannie boyd. The city deny have a library but you made it happen. Yes. We had a book mobile a few years but then it died. We had a pickup truck for a while. Then that went away so we decided it was reconstruction and and, at that librarian said you will never get the money. Thats all he had to say. And we did. And off you went. It was all volunteers, no library ran to work with. Fortunately, the incoming new librarian was very helpful and we worked with a lot of wonderful people to get it going. And you have a mother daughter duo who has contributed hundreds of hours. People are dedicated. Absolutely. Unfortunately, a lot of our early volunteers who were really dedicated have aged out. So, we are always looking for new volunteers. It must do your heart a world of good. Im assuming you get some kids, teenagers, 20yearolds who havent forgotten about books . Yes we do. We have Library Aides who come and work. They are mostly college students. We do have some highstudents. Our lower age is they have to be at least 13 to come and work in the library with parental approval. But unfortunately, the teenagers have gotten very busy. School activities interfere. So, they come for a while and then we lose them. Well, i know that volunteer hours are one thing. And good Old Fashioned cold hard cash is another. And you have a fall book sale coming up. October 25, to the 27th. You guys raise money for books, electronics. The chair i sit in when i go to the library. How important is this used book sale . It is very important. We do two a year, one in october and one in april. And, the income from those has dropped some. I think we took in something over 5,000 last fall. And, but we habookstore now in the library. With very reasonably priced books. Thats bringing in a couple hundred dollars a month. That adds to our income. But yeah. It is very important to us to have the book sales. Based an all donations from the public. Thanyoso much for joining us. Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you. Well, another Big Community event would be the bocce court. They have a lot of folks here in town fired up to build them. And had to get the land donated. With more, lets throw it to Claudine Wong. Reporter we talked about how much the bocce world is a part of clayton. We talked about what put it together. We have cw here with us here now. Im here because im oneover the only people in clayton that can pronounce Gasia Mikaelian. You do that very well. Thank you. Lets talk about cbca. And really what it does. You dont have a chamber of commerce. It is like the de facto chamber of commerce here. It raises money for the of the community. Thats the motto of it. And when we are talking money, we are talking a good portion of money that goes for all the events in town. I have had people come back to me and say you come back for october events, for music in the park. We have the concerts in the grove. Oktoberfest in downtown clayton t. We raise a lot of money and we give back to scholarships. Education funding. To the blue star moms. Lots and lots of organization. If people come up to you and say hey, we could use a little help. The bocce courts we are looking can we be a part of this . This is something the cbca says okay, can we make this happen . Thats right. And basically, if you want, you come to us. All you do is fill out forms. Nine times out of ten you will be awarded the money. You are a councilmember here. You look at the folks behind us. Lots of dogs. What do you think in terms of the people who are like i have never been there. This place looks kind of cool. When i moved here in 1989, people in walnut creek and concord say where do you live . I say clayton. You have to earn it. Thats right. Its nine miles from the freeway. And we choose. We choose to live in clayton dont we . Because its the bedroom y. And way. We have to fight the traffic. But once we are here, we know why we are here. Is there a signature event . You have the signature bocce. I think i did the math. One in every 12 people play. And some of them are amazingly good. Im not one of them. I tried to learn when i was shooting a story. But im terrible. But i know thats the palino. And we have a new bear over there. The skipalino. And we have the grand opening. Movies in the park. Im exhausted by this trip. Lets go home. Yeah, we need to get some refreshments. Well send it book to you guys. Thanks Claudine Wong. Well sal, believe it or not, still at the saloon. And he with some people who know the territory when we come back. Ack. Heres your buick sir. Actually, thats my buick. Your buick doesnt have a roof rack this is my buick. How are we gonna fit in your moms buick . Easy. I like that new buick. Me too. I was actually talking about that buick. I knew that. Did you . Buicks fresh new lineup is full of surprises. Current eligible nongm owners and lessees get 20 below msrp on most 2019 buick encore models. [ music ] from elvis to the rolling stones, the monkees, everything plus years and they are here as we are bringing our zip trip to clayton today. And they are providing the catalyst that they say they are for all partie art and wine festival. The chili cookoff. The clayton club saloon. The relics have an important benefit concert coming up. A Live Performance august 24. Tickets only 25. And the money goes to a great cause. The proceeds benefit charity work being done in uganda thousands of miles away. The relics are all about heart and soul and rock and roll. I love a good hometown band. Yes, a lot of toe tapping going on. Thats for sure. All right, well, a good bar. They are still at the e two guy perhaps a beverage at this hour. This is a good assignme it s both did. Im in one of steves home bars here. I noticed the boots. This is the second continuously owned bar. The clayton club here. The tradition started. One of the regulars died so they put his boots up on the ceiling and when they played pool, they tapped it as a signature of good luck. But then they finally had to stop it because too many people were putting their booting up there. If you are in town and you want to start one place. And then end up at another, i assume this is the place you end up. You better end up here, yes. But there is a back patio out there and the summertime is great. There is a big back patio. You not just confined inside. Start at eds. It is outside. Maybe come over for one final, just check it out here at the clayton club. This place is jumping and they already poured us a couple of bloody maries which are the specialties here. If you dont mind, i would like to toss it back to you, Frank Somerville and Gasia Mikaelian. Let me give you a cheers and leave us with, go ahead and take it away. I hope you have one for us, because we are almost done here. Yeah. I think they left us. I think they are drinking their bloody mary. I will hang out here, listen to the music of the relic. Clayton brought it today. 12,000 people live in the city. And i think we have about half of them here behind us at the grove. I see signs. People are saying clayton is the best. Nothing is better than coming out and showing. Hey clayton, can we hear it .
