Trucks, working to repair the highway here, after this fiery crash. Part of the highway, it looks like, was damaged. So theyve got the street sweepers and looks like crews out here. And looks like theyre doing some patchup work to the highway. So we dont know when this northbound part of 101 at Bailey Avenue will be reopened. But this all started 3 30 this morning. Thats when the crash was reported. And this was the dramatic scene the driver saw as they passed the four vehicles on fire. According to chp, it started with a single vehicle that spun out, hit the center divide. Three other cars crashed into it. One ignited and before long, all four vehicles were on fire on the freeway. And there was like three cars. And they were just engulfed. It was a pretty bad accident. Reporter and earlier this morning, we saw tow trucks removing from the scene, one by one, each of the four vehicles that were involved in this crash. And it did take caltrans crews a little while. We saw them patching up the road, bringing in asphalted and sweeping. Now, back here live, it looks like theyre about to wrap up that road work. You see one of the two caltrans vehicles picking up, getting ready to pick up some of the cones. So it looks like they are getting ready to reopen more lanes here. Xfinity mobile. Its wireless reimagined. Simple. Easy. Awesome. Welcome back. Its now 8 14. Students in the Oakland Unified School district are heading back this monday. And the district is coming off a turbulent school year. That includes a controversial decision by the school board to cut 20 million from ousds school budget. Also, as we have been reporting just this morning, 20 principals out of the oaklands 86 schools are not coming back for the new school year. Lets talk about what kind of year oakland students and their families can expect. Were hope happy to welcome back superintendent will kyla trammel johnson. Thanks for having me. The best thing about a new year is its time for a fresh start. How is oakland School District turning the page . Were turning the page by basically, focusing on our students and families. And were excited to start the year to welcome back our students and families, and ensure that we have highquality educational experiences for all of our students. So really looking forward to not looking in the past. What changes should students and families expect for this year . Students and families should expect in many ways, just consistently to have dynamic and dedicated teachers and school staff that are excited to welcome students and families on the first day of school and throughout this year. After the teacher strike. And the teachers came back to the classroom. We gave the teachers for the most part what they wanted financially. That has to lead to cuttings elsewhere. Including cuts. Some of the decisions we have to make are about expanding quality and ensuring that were able to provide quality services, arts, music, sports, robust academics. And Extracurricular Activities in our schools. But were seeing that plan in action this year. So this year, we actually have an expanded high school. One of our highdemand high schools is going to be offering more seats to students. We have an expanded 612 school in east oakland that has a Graduation Rate of over 90 that is going to be offering more seats so more families can have access to that program. And weve got another school where weve combined two smaller schools. Thats elmhurst united middle school. And that is going to offer more robust programming. Some of those decisions are having to make adjustments to some of our schools. But the end result is being able to expand quality and programming to our families. What schools are at the top of the list for possible closures. At this time, were really focusing on our schools that we have just expanded, which i will be visiting the first day of school. So youre not naming any businesses that could be on the closure list. We need to make sure that our board is making the final decision. Were excited about some of the changes weve made. And ill be visiting all of those schools throughout the first week of school. I know that many have said, even the district itself, says there are too many schools and not enough students. How do you manage a 20 million budget cut, with the fact that you have so Many Properties open. Each needs a principal, a secretary, a custodian. That is what is behind our city wide plan, is really looking at where we currently are, making those hard decisions. And its both a combination of having to make some of those tough decisions, being able to invest, to have sustainable quality schools. And also thinking about revenue enhancements. For properties that were seeing that were not using. What are ways that we can creatively use those properties in ways to enhance revenue for our district . What that might include . Revenue enhancements . Well, it may include longterm leases. It may include looking at other programs that may be using some of those facilities and providing revenue for our district. So were in the middle of discussing what those possibilities can be. What do you say to oakland parents who are frustrated by the state of finances, some have described a broken culture within the district. As the grand jury report over the summer said. Youre in charge of leading this district. Tens of thousands of students and their families. What do you say to parents who might be losing faith in ousd . What i say is to take a look at the work that we have done. I have been here as a student, as a teacher, through a lot of our turbulent times. And i deeply believe that stability is really the end results that are going to get us through these times. And that woo actual we actually have to start addressing some of those deep challenges weve had as a district. So actually making some of these tough decisions, staying in open communication with our families, with our community, about what we need to do. So that people understand the complexity. And the dilemmas that weve had for decades and the need to have the courage to actually make the decisions so that we can get on the other end and provide better resources for students and families. At the end of all of this tough decisions are being able to ensure that every student, not just some, have all of the aspects of quality in their school. So a lot of what were doing is really about courage. My kids go to this School District. So im personally connected to seeing the district become more stable. It is hard to find a district outside of oakland that is as passionate, as outspoken as parents, students and teachers are. Thank you so much for joining us. Oakland superintendent, kyla johnsontrammel. Thanks for that. Lets check traffic. Its been a rather busy morning for you, sal. Thats right. We have some veteran news here. Northbound 101 is getting a little better here in morgan hill and to san jose. Theyve opened all the lanes after a deadly crash that happened at 3 30 in the morning. It was closed maybe 20 minutes ago. They opened the lanes. And things are beginning to clear up a little bit. You can see, theres still quite a bit to go. Traffic is open from morgan hill. Silicon valley in general is a little slow. And now, the east bay commute is slowing down. Still highway 4 and 680 are slow. And 24 is moderate. If youre driving to the carquinez bridge. And from there to macarthur maze, its taking 30 minutes. And you add another 25 to 30 here. 8 21. Lets bring steve in with todays weather. Thank you, sir. Its the beginning of a cooling trend. And maim low to mid80s mainly low to mid80s. Onshore wind is in place. But 30mileperhour gusts. And the low offshore is beginning to entrain some moisture. And that is really giving us an unseasonable pattern. That low will move in late, late friday, early saturday. Theres a lot of fog. But again to the west, its not much there anymore. 50s on the water temps are about where they should be. To a little below. And theres plenty of 50s up and down much of the california coast. Cold water. 50s and 60s on the temps here. Slow to recover here. Still mid60s or upper 50s. Well continue to do so. Until that low moves in. And that will not be until saturday morning. Could be some rain. Certainly possible ill update that tomorrow. Cooling will take us into saturdays and warmer. Sunday and monday. Thank you, steve. Coming up next.
