Today, fire crews in Santa Clara County are doing something that will help them prepare for what is likely a very long fire season. Cristina rendon is live where this is. We actually move from milipitas in south san jose this morning. This is where the Fire Department is going to be training. Should say, Santa Clara County fire crews are going to be training here. At santa teresa county park. For wildfire preparedness. That means mutual aid exercises. They say its really important to get into the understanding of the importance of neighbors helping neighbors. Theres already been two significant fires here in Santa Clara County, since sunday. One of them being the calaveras fire. That is 80 contained as of this morning. The fire broke out at about 3 00 monday afternoon. In the hills southwest of calaveras reservoir. The other, the malec fire, that one, 90 contained. And as this fire season is under way. Cal fire is advising people to get prepared. Have an evacuation plan. Or know more more than two ways out of your community. In case youre asked to evacuate. Share that with your family. Provide defensible space. Todays wildfire preparedness exercise is going to focus on deploying mutual aid resources. The county just wants to make sure they have a good plan. Simulated fire happening. We understand that all of this is going to get started around 8 30 this morning. So just about 2 1 2 hours from now. The residents in this neighborhood are well aware of what is going on. We understand this is an annual fire drill. Well, of course, be here as these get under way. New equipment that handles the heat better is being installed. Pg e crews are working around the clock to restore power to lines that were overwhelmed by the heat. Traffic signals across the east bay were off. And more than 8,000 homes and businesses lost power during the hottest part of the afternoon. Most of them are back online this morning. The biggest outages right now are in oakland and san jose, with a combined total of 1,000 customers still without power. A tragedy in San Francisco. A 14yearold boy drowned at a popular beach right off chrissy field. Yesterday afternoon, the teenager was with a group of friends in waist deep water, when he lost his footing and slipped. Rescue crews found him about 25 yards out. And they immediately tried life saving measures. But he died at a nearby hospital. The park service says since this is federal property and not a beach for swimming, there are no lifeguards on duty. And some regulars say people should stay out of the water because they may not know what is under their feet. Because youre not really sure what is going to happen, once youre knocked off your feet. Youre unaware if its going to drag you back or if youre going to be pushed forward. The boy and his friend were not supervised by adults. Police are investigating a driveby shooting on robin drive, near meadow lark drive. Authorities say a 20yearold man and woman were sitting in a parked car, at 2 20 this morning, when someone in a dark colored sedan fired into their vehicle. The man in the parked car was rushed to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. The woman was not injured. So far, no arrests have been made. Police want to talk to anyone who may have seen something. Our time is 6 10. San franciscos board of supervisors will take a final vote about closing Juvenile Hall by 2021. Now, last week, the board gave preliminary approval to that plan. It is underused as youth crime has been going down. Also, they argued, there are better ways to deal with young offenders. Critics are worried, the young inmates may be moved far from home. And that will be hard on families. If the proposal is approved, a new facility would be up and running by the end of 2021. That one would focus on rehab and job training. Well, the east bay municipal utility district will vote on an increase at a meeting. East bay mud revises its utility every two years. Governor newsom will spend the next year and a half studying californias growing Senior Citizen population. Studying a future change in the states average age. But the recreational swimming a lifeguard told us on hot days like today, they expect the pool to be near or at capacity. Temperatures are expected to be close to the triple digits. Its really no surprise that people are starting to take advantage of this. Walnut creek did look at this. About 5 30 last night, power went out for a lot of homes and businesses here. I checked the pg e power outage map. And there are still a few spots in and around pal nut creek without power. A lifeguard here gave us some tips. Drink a lot of water. Air quality is expected to be unhealthy today, as we continue to see hot temperatures. Officials want to remind everyone, avoid driving. Limit your driving, if you can. And if you are heading out to exercise. I mean, its almost getting too late now at 6 30. They say Early Morning hours are the best to do exercise outside. The vta will be offering free rides to cooling centers in santa clara. The rides will be from 8 00 in the morning until 8 00 tonight. Southern marin fire investigators say a transformer at panoramic highway spread flames in the surrounding area sunday. Also knocked out power to about 1100 people. Marin county was not part of the area, where pg e preemptively turned off power. Firefighters told the marin independent journal, they were prepared. They were able to rush and respond within minutes. Pg e rolled out its first Public Safety power shutoff last weekend because of highfire danger. 27,000 customers in five counties, had their power turned off as a precaution. Now, pg e says half of the affected customers had their power back on within 36 hours of the shutdown. But customers say it was a huge inconvenience. Although many understand why it was done. Pg e is now answering questions about how that decision is made. So were constantly weighing that balance to make the determination of you know, when saturday appropriate time to call for one of these events. There are four specific guidelines that pg e must meet before it can impose a Public Safety power shutoff. Those are, the National Weather service declaring a red flag warning. Forecast of steady winds, stronger than 25 Miles Per Hour in the shutoff targeted area. With gusts of at least 45 Miles Per Hour. Low humidity levels, which usually means 20 or lower. And critically dry vegetation that could fuel a wildfire. Time is now 6 38. The Santa Rosa City council, expected to get an update on the citys lawsuit against pg e. Lawyers for the city will explain that lawsuit in the special meeting this afternoon. The public will be allowed to comment ahead of time. More than 3,000 homes in the city of santa rosa, were destroyed in the october 2017 wildfires. Cal fire concluded that pg e equipment caused many of those fires. That meeting today is at 4 00 p. M. This week, the defense kicked off its case, calling several witnesses to the stand. Including one woman who says a group of unidentified men were laughing and happy about the deadly fire, where 36 people died. Ktvus brooks jarosz was in the courtroom. Reporter sharon evans was up next. She witnessed the fire and claimed she heard and saw a group of men in black hoodies, gloating about how fierce the flames were at a nearby taco truck. Testifying that they said, no one is going to make it out of the building alive, no one is going to survive. What enraged many was oakland fire chief james bowren, he stood behind his decision to not tell his firefighters there may be up to 50 people still inside. And claimed if he had, it would have caused hysteria, and prevented firefight freres putting out the flames. Had they known, and had they been instructed to go up there to the second floor, break the windows, break the ceiling, do something, get them out, more people would have been alive. We wouldnt be so angry and so heartbroken today, if they had at least tried. But they didnt try and that man on the stand today is not sorry.
