And earlier this morning, again, 20, 30 minutes ago, you can see behind me ill step out of the way. I bus was involved in some sort of a collision with it looks like a smaller red sedantype vehicle. And neighbors so far weve talked to them. They said they heard several loud booms and crashes. One of the neighbors we talked to said the bus looked like it was heading westbound on ashby when it may have collided with the car and then the crash itself, the force of the crash may have pushed both vehicles towards this house. Now, it doesnt look like it is in the bus the bus is in the house at all. It looks like maybe it clipped the front awning or the first porch area of it. We havent had a chance to talk to police or firefighters about any injuries and what theyre investigating when it comes to injuries or casualties maybe. But, again, theyre just they have closed off this part of ashby at california. And were waiting to get more information from them about what happened. You can see there is a pretty large fire and Police Presence out here. Police have blocked off several streets in this area. It was tricky for us to get in and actually see what had happened. Senate leaders hope to approve a budget deal today to keep the government running past midnight. As doug luzader reports from washington, there is opposition from both republicans and democrats. Reporter even if everything goes as planned, this is going to be nip and tuck today and that midnight deadline is rapidly approaching. Think there is a deal emerging under the dome . Dont tell that to House Democratic leader nancy pelosi who spent over eight hours railing against a bipartisan compromise that sought to keep the government open because it doesnt have any promises on many he inauguration. I have no intention of yielding, mr. Speaker. Reporter that after mrs. Pelosi had been on the deal to keep the government open. It would blow existing budget caps and shower more money on the pentagon, something that republicans want and shelter programs which democrats want. This budget deal would be the best thing that we have done for our economy, our military, our middle class for a long time. No one would suggest it is perfect. But we worked hard to find Common Ground and stay focused on serving the american people. Reporter but while some democrats arent on board because the deal doesnt afford protections for many illegal immigrants, many republicans just cant stomach the eye popping price tag. Im not only a no, im a hell no. Im astonished that the Republican Party seems to be the party of Big Government at this day and age. Reporter and thats the thing with the compromise. Both sides have to give in. The question now is whether there are enough opponents among democrats and republicans to scuttle this emerging deal. Doug luzader, fox news. That is probably true. Meteorologically, you would be on the money with that one. Yesterday was a recordsetting day again. San jose every day this month they have set a record high or tied a record high. Yesterday they tied. Gilroy, 79. Mountain view, 74. February 8th, the average high in san jose is 61. They havent been close to that. 77 on tuesday. 76 on wednesday. Today the forecast high is 74. The record is 78. So i think they will fall short today. We had fog move into monterey peninsula, coming into the santa cruz coast. It moved in and backed out. It tried to move in and gets wiped out by an off shore breeze. Half moon bay up to daly city. Now there are reports that it is starting to clear. But a little higher relative humidity. A little bit of patchy fog will equal cooler temps. There is a puff of an off shore breeze at hayward. That keeps it at bay, if you will. 39 in fairfield. A little cool for some. That breeze has tailed off. If you lose that breeze, the temps can plummet here. Not nearly as warm el sobrante and el cerrito as it was this time yesterday. Theyre down 5 to 9 degrees once they lose the northeast breeze. High pressure still in charge. Patchy fog. But it is showing signs of easing off a little bit here. It will be slightly cooler. Still well above average on the temps. By the weekend, we will see more 60s than 70s. Today, some 60s near the coast. I drop San Francisco out of the 70s to 61 or 68 from 71 yesterday. Tough call down towards santa cruz. It will be a little cooler. Inland lots to low to mid70s. Allie rasmus is on the scene and will update the breaking news in just a minute. 7 29. Right back to breaking news we have been bringing you from South Berkeley where an ac transit bus has crashed into a house. Allie rasmus just received brandnew information. Youre near the scene. What do you know now . Reporter we just talked with Berkeley Police sergeant who told us about the investigation going on. 6 30 this morning is when police and Emergency Responders got the call about a collision involving a bus and a vehicle. This is ashby that youre looking at in berkeley. The closest intersection is california. Now, what we know and what police have just confirmed to us, you can see the bus is sort of clipped the front porch of one of the homes here on ashby. And right next to it, im not sure if you can see it from our Vantage Point because there are vehicles blocking our way, there is a red car that the bus collided with. You see it in the picture. The driver of that red vehicle, the red car did die in this collision. Police say no one else was injured. They werent able to tell us if there were if there were any passengers on the bus. Police say no other injuries. The bus driver is fine. But the driver of that red vehicle that you see, the red car, the sedan did die in this crash that happened around 6 30 this morning. I have Andrew Frankle here. Do you have any updates . You came over like you have an update. Yes. Reporter we have you live on ktvu. Good morning. The obviously Additional Information that i have to share there were only two occupants on the bus at the time of the collision, the driver and one passenger. Neither of them were injured in the collision. And the house that was impacted was occupied but none of the occupants were injured. Reporter that is good news. There were two people on the bus. They werent injured. That is right. Reporter the bus driver is fine. But the driver of the red car. And we dont know about the drivers identity. We dont have any more information on the driver. Reporter how did the crash happen . The initial information that we have. The red car was traveling southbound on california street. As it was driving through the intersection, it struck the ac transit bus, sort of tbone collision. The force of the collision drove both vehicles into a parked car and then into the front of the house. Weve got Structural Engineers from the city coming to evaluate the house and make sure it is still safe. Reporter thank you very much, sergeant Andrew Frankle with Berkeley Police. Ashby is closed off because of the investigation into the collision. The sergeant told me earlier they expect this stretch of road to be closed down for at least the next couple of hours as they investigate. Just to recap, ac transit bus, there was a collision involving that bus and a red sedan on ashby around 6 30 this morning. The driver of that red car did die in this crash. We dont know anything about that persons identity. But an investigation into exactly how this happened and what happened continues here this morning. Back to you guys. All right. Allie. I pecks that the driver of the bus will undergo some tests as is likely routine. Reporter i think that is always the standard procedure whenever an ac transit driver or any driver is involved in a crash that is this severe and of this magnitude, especially when someones life was taken in it. All right. Allie rasmus live in berkeley. Thank you. Lets go over to sal. Youre watching that and traffic all over the bay area. How does it look . Well, i want to just let you know that if you are trying to avoid ashby avenue there near sacramento, it is one block east of sacramento is where the accident happened, thats going to be closed. You can see the area in purple here. That means that it is closed. Highway 13, it is pretty busy in the area. And you should use University Avenue instead. I know that is not a great alternate route but the only one that can get you through. Unless youre going some other way. Perhaps you know your way around berkeley. Just avoid ashby avenue. A lot of people use it to get up to that part of berkeley. And right now it is not an option. Lets move along and take a look at ashby at university. You can see traffic is moving along pretty well. Ashley at 80, i should say. Traffic is moving along pretty well. At the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up all the way to the maze and the metering lights are on. No major problems getting through. This morning on interstate 880, traffic is a little bit slow as you drive up through. I want to mention something that i dont have on the maps. It is on kirker pass road at nortonville road. There is a crash where a car went off of the embankment. Minor injuries. Now, lets go to steve with todays forecast. Thank you, sal. A little different twist here. I think were about ready to see an end to the record highs. By the time we get to the weekend, we will see a change. Does it mean rain, no. Humidity is up. Patchy fog is forming. We had some yesterday make it to monterey. Same thing today. If youre heading down to monterey, it is dancing inland and gets pushed out but it is there. Currently 54 with fog lifting giving way to clear skies in dc, daly city. There you go. We will show it to you coming up here. You see some of that. Again, it is very shallow. But a little bit of it moving up on highway 1, san mateo coast. It put on the brakes right about there. A little towards the golden gate and the marin headlines. Now it is coming back in. So it is patchy. There is patchy fog but mainly will impact areas near the coast. The off shore breeze is really starting to lose its grip. There is still a component of it nothing compared to approximate what we saw. When you lose the breeze, fairfield, 39. Cool temps here. The breeze might pick up a little bit. I think today is the last day. 60s and 70s. There will be bigger changes on the weekend. We will have that in about ten minutes. Lets go back to the desk. Thank you, steve. New this morning, Berkeley Police and city cleanup crews spent the Early Morning hours clearing out a homeless camp near the old city hall. Police blocked off the streets so the crews could move tents and other personal items. They say about 30 people were living at the camp. They were told that they had to get out this morning. When police went tent to tent earlier this morning, there were no problems. The homeless say their lives are hard enough. Some People Living nearby actually came out and showed support for the homeless. I live telegraph in the rent controlled apartment. Im very lucky. These people are not fortunate. They do not have anything that they can afford to live in. Some of the people who live at that camp say they think they know why theyre being moved. They told us a couple of days ago that there was a fire that broke out at the camp that was started by someone who they say doesnt live there. That person was arrested but they say that was probably the motivation to shut down their camp. In the meantime students from Santa Clara University are helping the homeless that were forced out of a camp this week. About a hundred people were living at this particular camp under the freeway interchange in san jose that connects 280, 680 and 101. On monday a caltrans sweep moved them out. Now theyre trying to figure out where to go. Yesterday students from a religious studies program passed out water and food. But as they left, they wished they could have done more. I think it can kind of feel like an attack from a lot of angles. We just want to come in and be personable and talk to them one to one and make sure that they have the support that they need for whatever is coming next. Caltrans has had complaints about that campsite and say they had to clear it for health and safety reasons. Homicide yesterday morning in the jingle town neighbor is being investigated for a possible link to a warehouse breakin. President trump getting pushback now on his idea to hold a military parade in washington, d. C. The president came up with the idea for a military parade while visiting france last july during bastille day. He wants to have a parade here to show appreciation for the military. However, some military vets and democrats have criticized it. Retired Major General paul eden wrote, donald trump has continually shown himself to have and this is just another example. They called it a misuse of military time and energy. Republicans though are defending the president. I think it is entirely reasonable to for the for the nation to be patriotic and celebrate the person serving us. The 1 that serves us on national defense. Some people are expressing concern about the cost of a military parade when resources are stretched thin already. Planes and tanks would have to be shipped to washington and troopswould have to practice marching instead of training. The time is 7 41. The gerber baby for 2018 has been announced. Coming up, why this years selection is making history. Also dating your coworkers. A new policy by facebook and google in the wake of the metoo movement. Good morning. We have a lot of slow traffic out there still. Especially in the east bay. If youre driving on highway 4, it is very slow coming over the hill to concord. I have a date with Mother Nature. Were going to talk change. Change is good. We need change. And there are hints of it already. We will have more on that coming up. Tech giants facebook and google are setting new rules on dating in the workplace in the wake of the metoo movement. The companies are allowing their workers to ask a coworker out but youre only allowed to ask one. If youre turned down, you cannot ask again. Facebook says ambiguous answers like im busy or i cant that night, that counts as a no. Workers also dont have to report the date to their hr department. But if there is a conflict of interest and the relationship is not disclosed, the workers could be disciplined. Companies have been trying to tackle any risk of inappropriate behavior after the rise in workplace misconduct reports over the past year. Our question of the day, is it a good idea to date a coworker . We see from the results 20 say yes. 80 of you no. As he does, Frank Mallicoat is taking our question of the day out on the road. Im guessing youre get being a lot of interest in this one. Reporter yeah. Actually i think everyone certainly has an opinion about this, gasia. Were here at bills cafe. It is a breakfast and lunch spot in pleasanton. I have bill who runs a cleaning bill. Rob. Reporter pardon me, rob. Tell us, facebook and google are kind of laying down the law of the land in light of the metoo movement. How do you feel about that . If you ask someone out and they say no, you cant ask again. No means no. It is a good protocol to have in place in lieu of everything going on. Celebrities and politicians, so forth. If you have a precedent and people are not complying with that, consequences need to be suffered. Answers like im busy or not tonight constitutes as a no. There is still a little gray area in there. Reporter yeah. Maybe casually outside of work asking them one more time. But i would say pursuing it at work, then youre putting your job at risk. Reporter exactly. I run a business. I probably wouldnt want that going on. Were trying to get stuff done. Reporter have you ever dated a coworker before. Yeah. About 20 years ago. In the beverage industry. She was a secretary up front. Reporter how did that work out for you . It went fine. But were talking 1992. 25 years now later, things have changed. There have been issues that have come up that were not existing then or not talked about like they are now. It was okay. It came and went. And we got a short relationship. And i continued to work there and so did she. Reporter you say bravo to google and facebook for putting clarity down saying no means no and thats the way it works. I would say yeah. I think businesses should follow in that precedent. Maybe we will have less of these issues coming up in the future. I mean men are just as guilty as women. They all play the same games. I have been in it and seen it. As opposed to what is out there jenny, im not a pig. Im a gentleman. So it just depends on who youre dealing with. Reporter rob, well spoken. How were the honey wheat pancakes. I recommend them. Reporter they were the size of mount diablo and he finished them quick. Thank you for your comments. Come down and join in on the conversation. We will be here all morning long talking about dating in the workplace. Back to you. Frank mallicoat, thank you. A lot of interesting comments. 7 48 here. Yes. Lets go back to traffic. Breaking news in South Berkeley. That scene will be active for a while. It will be active for a while. I want to show you the area that were talking about on ashby avenue between sacramento and all the way up to, lets see, Martin Luther king way. As you know if you drive this stretch, thats a big chunk of ashby avenue that is not available. People are getting the word. Earlier we had a big traffic jam here. Now people are staying away from it. The alternate route would be University Avenue. You can do that or perhaps another way in case youre a local to stay off of ashby for a while. This is not in any way affecting the freeway at ashby. From the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. So dont take this exit unless youre only going a short way. If youre only going up to san pablo avenue, you should be good. After that, anything after that youre going to be caught in the slow traffic. Westbound bay bridge, you can see traffic is backed up all the way out to 880. No major problems on 880 itself heading north, driving up past the coliseum. And in the south bay, we have the slow traffic getting up to the west valley which has become very typical. Today we dont have that many crashes. What weve had has been put off to the side. 7 49. Lets bring steve in. Thank you, sal. Youre welcome, steve. All right. Good morning. As i said, i called Mother Nature and i said we need to talk [applause] because change is needed. Were locked in. And it is february. And anna says what is causing the air quality to be as unhealthy levels for sensitive people . It is called an inversion. It is called High Pressure. When you normally go in the atmosphere, the temperature cools. In this pattern, it warms up rapidly and traps all the pollutants below. Air quality not so good. But the humidity is going up. Not as much dryness. There are hints of a change here. San jose yesterday tied every day this month. San jose has either set or tied a record high. Gilroy, 79 yesterday. The old mark was 76. Mountain view was also a record yesterday. It looks like things are changing. The average high for san jose is 61. 77 on tuesday. 76 yesterday. The forecast today is 74. But the record is 78. And i think the reason being because a little fog has come back to parts of the coast. Not a lot. Very shallow. The mere fact into were talking coastal fog in february is amazing. Came into monterey bay and pulled out. Now it is dancing around. If you are heading down to the monterey peninsula, there is patchy fog out there. Made it into santa cruz. Drifted back out. You see the off shore and the on shore breeze fighting each other here. Some has moved up the san mateo coast. The breeze out to the delta is a far cry than the last couple of days. Fairfield has dropped to 39 cold degrees. 50s for some. But we are running a little cooler. The big difference though is over at montero and moss beach. Down 10 to 15 degrees compared to 24 hours ago. High pressure still here. But the systems will start to chip away at the stone, so to speak. That will allow temperatures to cool off a little bit. We start that today. It will be more pronounced going into the weekend as the system moves into the northern sierra. Our dry weather stretches now after 14 days. There are hints around the 19th or 20th. There is nothing that says rain. But at least a change. 60s now coast and 70s inland. Theres some hazy skies. But i think that patchy fog and a little more hints of cooler weather is beginning to take hold here, dave. All right. A day is we will get there. All right. The time is 7 52. Did you get the flu already this season . Coming up at 8 00, more on why youre not in the clear just yet and the new concern that you could get the flu twice. Plus, will we see him at the at t pebble beach Golf Tournament . Up next, more on what former president obama is doing today in monterey. Fire fighting is a very dangerous profession. We have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. And for us the expert in gas and electric is pg e. We run about 2,500 2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg e is responding to that call as well. And so when we show up to a fire and pg e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis. I rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. Utilizing pg es talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. The things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harms way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldnt ask for a better partner. An update on a story we brought you yesterday morning about flooding at the Oakland Coliseum dmv office. The office there on 85th avenue is closed today as crews clean up the water damage caused after thieves stole copper tubing on tuesday night. Dmv workers first found the damage when they arrived for work yesterday morning. Thieves scaled the building and stole the copper tubing from the roof. The copper is estimated to be about 50 when recycled. There were tens of thousands of dollars in damage as water from the burst pipe flooded the building and caused tiles to fall from the ceiling. The time is 7 55. In just about five minutes from now, philadelphias first ever super bowl parade is due to begin celebrating the eagles victory over the patriots on sunday. Were looking at pictures of people gathered out there. Theyre expecting 2 Million People along the parade route. You see the players with the lombardi trophy and the crowd greeting them. Schools, government offices, even the philadelphia zoo will be closed today because of the super bowl parade. Now the parade and this is these are live pictures near the famous art museum along the river there, the parade will wind through downtown philly and will here at the museum of art. Thats the steps where rocky ran up and down in the rocky movies. That is the middle of your screen. We will have live coverage of the super bowl parade during our newscast throughout the morning. Golfers there tart teeing off in the first round of the at t pebble beam pro am. There were several celebrities taking part yesterday including a local golf legend. It is about entertaining the crowd. Julie helped the Celebrity Team beat the bill murray team. Former president obama is also on the monterey peninsula today. He will be speaking at a private at t Leadership Conference. It coincides with the pebble beach pro am. While the former president is not playing in the tournament, we understand that he brought his golf clubs along with him. I know he did and he is a lefty too. The time is 7 57. Have you ever been so tired, so sleepy as you drive . Up next, we will tell you more about a new study that shows just how dangerous that can be. Also were staying on top of breaking news in South Berkeley. What were learning about an ac transit bus that collided with a vehicle and ultimately crashed into a home. A busy intersection in berkeley will be closed for the next couple of hours as Police Investigate a deadly crash involving an ac transit bus and a car. Ashby and california in South Berkeley. What we know about what may have caused the crash to begin with. A surprising report out this morning about the dangers of drowsy driving. What you need to know before you get behind the wheel. Mornings on 2 continues now. This is ktvu mornings on 2. Welcome back to mornings on 2. Im mike mibach. Im gasia mikaelian. We continue with breaking news in South Berkeley. It is impacting traffic. Sal castaneda has more. The breaking news in berkeley has closed a major road. The bugs crashed into a house. The driver of the car died. Allie rasmus is live on the scene. I imagine that ashby avenue will be closed for a while. Reporter yes. At least for the next couple of hours. There this is a deadly this is a deadly collision that theyre investigating. You can see the bus involved in the crash ended up clipping the front porch of a home on ashby avenue. According to police what they initially know about what happened with this crash ask how the crash happened, they say the bus was going west on ashby. A red car, a smaller sedan was going west across california street, which is the nearest intersection. And that red car you can kind of see a little bit of it in the picture. The police and the Coroners Office has now set up the black tarps and barricades so that we dont see as they are doing their work removing the body of the driver of this car. We dont know anything about the identity of the driver. Police have not said whether it was a man or a woman. But at some point as that car was trying to go across or maybe turn right on california, it collided with the bus heading west on ashby. The force of the crash was enough to push both vehicles into that house, into the front porch of the house. Luckily no one in the house were hurt even though there were people inside. We talked to the nextdoor neighbor of the people who live in the home. She says she heard a very loud noise this morning when it happened. Im hard of hearing. I could feel the vibration. I felt the boom. Woke up. I thought it was like a regular car accident or whatever. But it wasnt. Then i was like oh my god. I just got dressed and ran to the front door. What did you see when you saw that . To be honest with you, i just broke down. Reporter now, there were two people on the bus, two passengers on the bus, in addition to the driver. They were not injured. And the driver was not injured. Again, there were no injuries. The only well, the driver of the red car though was killed in this collision. Berkeley police say they plan to have this intersection, ashby and california, shut down for the next couple of hours as they do their work and do their investigation here. Be aware of that, the busy stretch in South Berkeley will be closed to vehicles for the next couple of hours. Back to you, sal. Thank you, allie. I want to take you to the map of the area to get you around the problem. If youre trying to get to your classes at cal, use University Avenue instead of ashby. The purple area is where the incident occurred. You can get off the freeway and get up to as far as lets say san pablo avenue and then make a left or right and go around the problem that way. I would recommend staying away from the area. As you heard allie say, it will be closed for quite some time. Lets move along and take a look at the freeway which is not affected really by any of this. The traffic is heavy as you drive from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. At the bay bridge, we have a 20 minute delay before you make it on to the span. And 880 is beginning to get pretty slow driving through. The south bay commute is also slow as you drive to the west valley. It is 8 04. Lets go to steve now with todays weather. Thank you, sal. We have a change here. It means 70s inland but cooler coast and bay. The humidity is up. There was patchy fog, not a lot but a little bit. If youre heading down to monterey, there is a little there. The relative humidity increased yesterday. Much cooler yesterday. Currently 52. 79 relative humidity. That is way up. It was 10 a couple days ago. Berkeley lab is 60. A lot of low 50s here instead of upper 50s and 60. Our observation has el cerrito at 51. That is down 9 degrees from 24 hours ago. Tiburon is 52. There is a change in the fog. Ill go this way. You can see it is up to daly city. It has lifted for some. Down around monterey as well. If youre heading down there, be advised that you could get the fog again. There is just a puff of an off shore breeze which means any fog will be confined to the immediate coast. 40s on the temps to 50s. We have cold readings because we lost a lot of the breeze. It looks like the dome of High Pressure is weakening a little bit. Now 60s and 70s. Lets go back to the desk. Gasia and mike. Thank you, steve. The number of former students at a catholic all girls school is growing who say they were abused. Now 20 say they were sexually abused by a total of eight different coaches and teachers. One former student hanes says she reported a teacher touched her inappropriately and showed her pornography. The school released a statement saying we condemn the type of conduct described in the allegation. The school conducted an investigation 30 years into ms. Hanes complaint but hanes says that the school should have gone directly to police and have them investigate her claim. It is not the schools place to investigator to look for evidence. It is their job to report suspicions or to report when a child reports abuse. She and others are pushing to have the board of directors investigate the School Administrators and they hope that results in a change of school leadership. A new study shows that drowsy drivers are to blame for more traffic accidents than originally thought. The aaa study shows 9 of all crashes involved drowsy drivers. Earlier estimates by the federal government put that at less than 2 . The aaa study shows that drowsy drivers are the reason for 11 of all serious crashes. People we talked to this morning are not surprised by the study. Were so busy working, doing things with our families that we dont Pay Attention to the time. And some people probably dont get enoughly. When youre tired, youre actually not full. You know, your mental state. It seems pretty true. Experts say the measures that many people take, including rolling down the window, playing the radio loud or drinking lots of coffee do not work. If you can feel your eyelids drooping when youre behind the wheel, get off the road and take a short nap at the very last. San jose mayor liccardo will give the city address tonight at 6 30. Were hours away from a possible government shutdown. There are signs of a compromise but both democrats and republicans are criticizing it. As doug luzader reports from capitol hill, time is running out. Reporter even if everything goes as planned, this is going to be nip and tuck today. That midnight deadline is arapidly approaching. Think theres a deal emerging under the dome . Dont tell that to House Democratic leader nancy pelosi who seized the house floor and spent over eight hours railing against the bipartisan compromise that sought to keep the government open because it doesnt include any promises on immigration. I have no intention to yielding, mr. Speaker. That after pelosi had been in on the deal to keep the government open, along with leaders from both parties. It would blow existing budget caps and shower more money on the pentagon, something that republicans want and more for programs that democrats want. This budget deal would be the best thing that we have done for our economy, our military, our middle class for a long time. No one would suggest it is perfect. But we worked hard to find Common Ground and stayed focused on serving the american people. Reporter while some democrats are not board because it doesnt afford protections for many illegal immigrants, many republicans just cant stomach the eyepopping price tag. Im not only a no, im a hell no. Im astonished that the Republican Party seems to be the party of Big Government at this day and age. Reporter and thats the thing with the compromise. Both sides have to give in. The question now is whether there are enough owe pennants among democrats and republicans to scuttle this emerging deal. Doug luzader, fox news. Getting it twice in one season, it is possible. Im Lauren Blanchard in washington with a look at the current flu outbreak. A deadly crash in berkeley on one of the busiest streets involving an ac transit bus. Coming up we will tell you what happened and how likely it is for this street to be closed for a long time. Health officials now say the current flu outbreak could last well into the spring. They are worried, one, about people getting sick actually twice and two, about the Alarming Number of flu deaths among children. Lauren blanchard has the story. Reporter Health Experts do not see heightened flu activity calming down any time soon. Meaning someone who has caught the virus once will have plenty of chances to catch it a second time. Two cases in one season is rare. Although it does happen. Why . A mixture of plain old bad luck. And a variety of flu strains. If you have influenza a, that doesnt mean that you arent going to get influenza b. You could very well get that. Reporter the number of child deaths attributed to the virus is climbing. The cdc confirms more than 50 so far this year. Child fatalities are being reviewed to determine the exact cause. Doctors remind people, especially parents, it is rarely just the virus that can prove fatal. Typically it is the flu in someone with asthma or lung disease or premature or has copd and then they get sicker. Reporter there are many child flu cases that are not fatal but land kids in the hospital. Like a colorado girl who the flu and pneumonia had her on life support for days. Sanitizing and cleaning throughout the day. It is an airborne problem. When theyre coughing, sneezing or even talking is when theyre spreading this. The warrants will put the 50,000 that they won towards his education. Lets check in with sal and a look at the commute. Where are you going first . Were going to berkeley, mike and gasia. Coverage of the deadly crash involving a ac transit bus. Right now we see from our news chopper 2 there sky fox, pardon me, that you can see the street is still closed. The investigation continues. This was a deadly crash that happened at about 6 30 this morning involving that ac transit bus you see close to the building theres and a red car that was involved. They are going to be out there for a while. We have a reporter on the scene. At least a couple more hours for ashby avenue to be closed. It is going to cause some commute hassles for people who use ashby avenue to get into many parts of berkeley. Ashby is 13th avenue. You could use university to get around. This is a typical commute getting into San Francisco. 880 is slow as well, driving northbound and westbound 580 is slow out of san leandro. South bay commute has been slow. At 8 17, lets bring in steve with todays forecast. All right. The forecast finally has a different twist to it. That is an increase in the relative humidity and cooler coast and bay. Patchy fog came back. Yesterday we had more record highs. San jose airport tied. Nothing new there. They had a record high or tied one every day this month. Gilroy, 79 warm degrees. That was a record. Average high for san jose, 61. Tuesday, 77. 76 yesterday. Forecast is for 74 today. That would fall four short. Maybe we are finally starting to see a change in the pattern. A teeny bit of fog made it to parts of the coast. Santa cruz coast might dance in a little bit. It is shallow and thin. There is still a little bit there. Although i think it might, you know are, kind of dance in here and there. But there is enough of an off shore component even though it is weaker than we have seen to allow temperatures to bring temps down a little bit. 40s and 50s. The breeze out to the delta has tailed off. High pressure which has been just anchored on the west coast, it is still there. But theres a series of systems now chipping away at it. I think over time we will start to see by the time we get to the weekend cooler temps. We are now on day 14 without any rain. The last was on the 25th of january. Still mild to warm. Not as warm as it has been as temperatures begin a little slide south. So 60s and 70s. If youre well inland, you will get mid70s. I think after today the temperatures will start not doing. Southern california may be looking for rain next week. Nothing here yet. Okay. Were waiting. I know. Thanks, steve. One of the Biggest Bands of the 90s is returning to the stage. Ill tell you what i want, what i really, really want i want to really, really it appears that the spice girls is going out on tour. According to reports, everybody except Victoria Beckham was into the idea. Now she is, quote, fully on board after some convincing. The world tour will kick off this summer. Well, earlier this morning, President Trump spoke at the National Prayer breakfast in washington, d. C. He said religion is an important part of american life. We see the lords grace in the Service Member whos risk their live members who risk their lives for our freedom. We see it in the teacher who work tirelessly for their students and the police who sacrifice for our communities. This is the 66th annual National Prayer breakfast. 3500 people gathered at the washington hilton. Every president since eisenhower has spoken at the breakfast. Firefighters will hold a forum to hear from candidates running from mayor. It will focus on issues related to First Responders and the future of the Fire Department. The you know union sent a questionnaire to candidates and asked if they support giving firefighters veto power on Street Safety projects such as bike lanes. They support the campaign but some of the projects can make it difficult they say for fire engines to navigate through traffic. The forum starts at 10 00 at the Firefighters Union building on pier 96. New this morning, Berkeley Police and city cleanup crews have spent the entire Early Morning hours cleaning out a homeless encampment near the old city hall. Officers say about 30 people were living in the encampment. They have been told that they would have to leave this morning. When police went tent to tent earlier this morning, there were no problems but people in the camp say having to move makes an already difficult situation for them even tougher. Some People Living nearby came out to show their support for the people in the homeless encampment. I live on telegraph of in a rent controlled apartment. Im very lucky. These people are not fortunate. They do not have anything that they can afford to live in. Some of the people who lived at the camp think they know why theyre being moved today. They told us a couple of days ago there was a fire that broke out the camp but it was started by someone who doesnt usually live there. The person was arrested but they say that may have been the reason that the camp was shut down today. Students from Santa Clara University are helping Homeless People forced out of a camp this week in san jose. About 100 people were living in the encampment under the freeway interchange. Monday a cal trains sweep pushed them out and debris was removed. Some that lived in the camp are still in the area and trying to figure out where to go next. Yesterday students from a religious studies program passed out food and water but left wishing they could do more. I think it can kind of feel like an attack from a lot of angles. We just want to come in and be personable and talk to them one to one and make sure that they have the support that they need for whatever is coming next. Caltrans has had plains about the campsite and they had to clear it for health and safety reasons. What do you think, is dating coworkers a good or bad idea . We will look at what some Bay Area Companies are doing following the me too movement. More on a lawsuit following last years coyote creek flooding. Good morning. You can see traffic is going to be busy if you are driving in many areas. Were looking at a morning commute that is going to be tough. We will tell you more about where the trouble spots are coming up. No sign of any real rain for us. There might be a little bit in Southern California next week. But there are signs of a cooler pattern beginning to kick in. We will talk about that coming up. 8 29 on a sparkling thursday morning. Welcome back too mornings on 2. Im gasia mikaelian. Good morning. Im mike mibach. We will get to sal in just a bit. But in regards to that sparkling morning. Yes. Lets check in with steve and see how sparkling it is. Pretty sparkling but a change, a little bit. Patches of fog made it back. Not a widespread fog bank or anything. But it poured into monterey. If youre heading down there, be advised. Some have moved into the coast. It looks like there is too much of an off shore breeze. It could certainly move in around pebble. If you are down there even though it looks good now, it could change later. The humidity is higher. So it will be a little cooler coast and bay. That started yesterday. We will still get 70s. 40s and 50s right now. High pressure weakening a little bit. There are signs that a couple systems will knock it down a little more. 60s and 70s. The trend is to be cooler for the next few days. Do you want to go to berkeley, sal. We are going to go to berkeley in a moment. In fact lets start there. We want people to know that ashby avenue continues to be shut down for a Police Investigation of a deadly crash involving an ac transit bus that happened at about 6 30 this morning. And ashby avenue is closed between sacramento and Martin Luther king way. Both directions. And this will go on for a while. Now, the best way to get into the other area of berkeley is just avoid ashby. You may want to think about university or some of the other main roads. At the bay bridge toll plaza, it is backed up all the way to the maze. And the metering lights are going to be on. You can see some slow traffic as you drive into the area. I also want to mention that 880 has been pretty slow driving up to downtown oakland. But 580 is not an alternate route because that is slow out of san leandro. Were looking at the Silicon Valley commute. This is we have had a bad week. Northbound 101 solid from 280 all the way up to mountainview. 237 had an accident getting into sunnyvale. And 85 is very slow from 17 all the way up to highway 101. It is kind of a tough commute there. As i mentioned, we have been mentioning it all morning, we continue to cover the breaking news out of berkeley where a car crashed into an ac transit bus and the bus crashed into a house. We learned that the driver involved in the crash died in the crash. Allie rasmus is live at the scene. Anything new, allie . Reporter well, we can go over what we know so far. 6 30 is when this happened. The bus was going westbound on ashby. A red car, the sedan involved in the crash, was going south on california. And the two sort of tboned in the middle of the intersection. The force of the crash was Strong Enough where both vehicle, the bus and the car, slid across the intersection. The other lanes of traffic. Hit a parked car and then the bus clipped the front porch of a home on ashby. People were inside of the home at the time and they are okay. There were two passengers on the bus. The passengers and the driver were not injured. The driver in the red car, the body of the driver is inside so it has been shielded from us. The driver in the car did die in the collision. We talked to a man a short time ago who says he was on the bus when the collision happened. He says he was looking down at his phone so he didnt see the car coming. He didnt get a good look how the crash may have happened but he definitely felt the impact. He didnt want to show his face on camera. Here is what he said about the experience. I was looking at my gps because im not too familiar with this area. We came to this intersection. And all of a sudden i heard a loud bang and saw the headlights of this ladys car. We were sliding across the intersection. Crash, glass and everything shooting up at me. And we stopped at the house. And as we stopped, i had a bag of tools with me and it started sliding. And i gripped on for dear life. Reporter again, that man you just heard from said he was on board the bus when the collision happened. He was okay. A couple other passengers on the bus were okay. The driver of the bus was not injured. But the driver of the red car that collided with the bus did die in the collision. We dont know anything officially about the identity of the driver. Police have not given us that information yet. They are possibly waiting to notify the next of kin before they officially release the drivers identity. But in the meantime this crash still under investigation. Ashby and california is closed off to traffic in both directions. And likely will be for the next couple of hours as the investigation continues. All right. Allie rasmus there in berkeley. Thank you. Happening today, we will hear from some of the victims from last years flooding along coyote creek in san jose. They are suing the city and Santa Clara County over the emergency response. Residents say there wasnt enough done to protect them. Alex savidge is live in san jose to detail the allegations in the lawsuit. Alex. Reporter mike and gasia, good morning. Flood victims are saying the city and county were negligent. They did not do enough, these victims say, to protect people and their property. And thats because they did not issue an Evacuation Order earlier as the swollen coyote creek, which is just beyond us here in this neighborhood, began to overflow its banks one year ago. And all of that water inundated so many neighborhoods here in san jose, including Williams Street park where we are this morning. That flooding last february came after record rainfall. And when it was all said and done, this disaster caused nearly 75 million in damage to homes and other pieces of property. Now more than 150 families are filing a lawsuit against the city of san jose, Santa Clara County, the Santa Clara County Water District and the state of california. Later today, some of those flood victims and their attorneys will be speaking at a News Conference here in this san jose neighborhood. And a short time ago i had a chance to talk by phone with a representative for the flood victims and he tells me theres a lot of blame to go around. They knew that every time that the dam spills over, theres a flood along the coyote creek. And we we also are complaining that the city and the county, which had the responsibility for notifying people, to warn them to evacuate, failed to do that even though they knew what was going on. Reporter now, im told that the flood victims are not are not seeking any specific amount in terms of damages. They simply all want to be made whole after their properties were badly damaged. Some people still cannot live inside of their homes. This morning we are reaching out to city and county officials, looking for a response to this lawsuit, which were told should be filed officially by the end of the day today. Again, at that News Conference we will be hearing from victims of the flooding as well as the attorneys. And the News Conference is set to get underway at 11 00 this morning in san jose. Mike and gasia, back to you. We have the mayor of san jose coming on in the next hour. We will try to get a reaction from him about the lawsuit. Reporter it would be good to hear from him. Facebook and google are setting rules about dating in the workplace in wake of the me too movement. The companies are asking their workers to ask a coworker out but only allowed to ask once. If theyre turned down, they are not allowed to ask again. Facebook says ambiguous answers such as im busy or i cant that night count as a no. Workers also dont have to report the date to the hr department. If there is a conflict in interest and the relationship is not disclosed workers could be disciplined. Companies have been trying to eliminate any risk of inappropriate behavior following a rise in workplace misconduct reports in the past year. This leads us to the question of the day. We asked, is it a good idea to date a coworker . 20 say yes. 80 says no. Frank mallicoat is taking the question of the day out on the road in pleasanton. What did you find there. Reporter this couple has been married 46 years and they happened to meet at pacific stereo while at work. I have steve here and karen at bills cafe. Here here in pleasanton. You actually met your husband at work. Yes, i did. My first day. And he was giving rides in his car, his brandnew sports car. And i asked him when i got my ride and he said after work. And he got off before me and so he said forget. It then he called and asked if i would like to have lunch the next day. Reporter you said. Oh, you dont have to. Then i caved and weve been together ever since. Reporter did you have to ask a couple times. No. Just the one time. Reporter okay. But i was lucky. Reporter apparently you were. 46 years later. And kids and all. That well, tell us, how do you feel about what facebook and google are doing now in light of the me too movement and Sexual Harassment in the workplace . Do you give it a thumbs up or is there a gray area when dating in the workplace when a coworker says no or a vague im busy tonight, youre not supposed to ask her out again. I think it is a real gray area. In our case, we met the first day. I think it depends on the interaction at work too. If theres been some kind of leering going on or, you know, the general take on it. Reporter yeah. I think if someone asks you out and you say no, flat out no, then that means no. Not much of a breeze. It is slightly off shore. Nothing compared to what we had the last couple of days. Things are beginning to turn a little bit. Slight cooling yesterday. Some areas around the coast and bay were a little cooler. High pressure still in charge. There are signs that systems from the north will start knocking it down a little bit. Our last rain was on the 25th. No sign really of us getting rain. Weve had 14 days of dry weather. It will probably go out to 17 or 18. There are hints. At least a couple lows will drop in. Some changes are on the way. Certainly sunday and next week. It looks like rain for so cal next wednesday or thursday and arizona. It will dig down towards Southern California. The end result for us is cooler and windy. We need rain somewhere in the state. We can start in Southern California. Something to keep an eye on but not until next week. 60s and 70s.
