So a tragedy like what occurred on Christmas Eve affects all of us. Hundreds of Law Enforcement officers stood to hear the bell toll for andrew camilleri. [bell] reporter his family was also in attendance. The children placed flowers at the memorial. Officer camilleri was assigned to work in hayward but he continued to live in his hometown of tracy. The body was escorted from oakland, 50 miles across interstate 580 to tracy. People lined the streets and some were moved by the officers sacrifice. He was working Christmas Eve with his partner. They were looking out for reckless and impaired drivers. Before midnight. The officers suv was struck from behind by a red cadillac at a high rate of speed. The 22yearold hayward man behind the wheel was apparently under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Camilleri died at the hospital. His recent Career Change was a longtime dream of his. It was more than a career. It was a call. He felt in his heart it was a way for him to make a difference in peoples lives by being on the front lines and serving and protecting. And hes just a hero. I think sometimes the greatest tragedy is a wasted life. And andrew didnt waste his. Reporter officer camilleri leaves behind a wife and three children, a 12yearold daughter and two young sons. He was a selfless dad who would do anything for his kids and a man madly in love with his wife. Reporter a Memorial Fund has been established for his family. Donations can be made through the chp credit union. State and local officials are reiterating the message that dui does not just mean booze. Authorities are warning drivers that being under the influence of drugs is an increasingly serious problem. In addition to alcohol or cannabis, a driver could be suggest to a dui arrest if they are under the influence of cough medications or sleep aids. A man bit off part of another mans ear during an argument. 40yearold Samuel Paul Galindo was arrested after learning that he bit off part of a mans ear. He also chased the victim, punched the window of his vehicle and threatened to kill him. Police are asking for help in finding a suspected mail thief. These they also have photos of the vehicle. They are not saying how many packages or pieces of mail may have been taken but if anyone can identify the man in the pictures, call the tip line. Christien kafton says the city is looking at a pay lane for the most congested freeways. Reporter this is part of the stretch of road were talking about. San francisco is considering the idea of making a carpool lane on 280 and 101 and creating high occupancy express lanes in an effort to reduce congestion. The plan would cover from king street to the 101 split and 101 south to the county line. The Transportation Authority is looking for 4 million to fund a study of the idea. The managed lanes project failed to get six votes from supervisors at a meeting in december but will likely be pitched again since the whole board was not present for the vote. One driver said as congested as the stretches of road get, he thinks the idea would be great. I would pay for it. Especially working down here. A lot of the construction workers and they already commute in and out of the city a couple of hours, and sometimes its an hour getting onto the freeway. Two juveniles were arrested, accused of stealing vehicles from a limousine business. The Business Owner called police after noticing the vehicles stolen on Christmas Eve. Police spotted one of the suvs and began a pursuit. The driver was cited and released to his parents. Yesterday one of the stolen limousines was spotted and once the driver was pulled over and it was the same teenager who had been released to his parents. Two earthquakes in Santa Clara County after 7 00. A magnitude 3. 1 east of san martin. And three hours later, a 3. 9 quake struck the allen rock neighborhood of san jose. No injuries or serious damage reported from either quake. An acura slammed into a home in santa clara. The suv collided with a black honda after one of them ran the stop sign. The acura went through a small brick wall and into the house. No one was inside at the time. The mercury news reports that both drivers were hurt and the honda driver was taken to the hospital. Down on the floor he tried to take out the rings, he tried to show them and didnt get a chance. The two other victims inside the pawnshop, ages 60 and 63 were not harmed as the robbers fled on foot. They were running this way too. Reporter one of the suspects ducked into the Clothing Store just a half a block down the street. In the fitting room he tried to change a tshirt and something and he left a gun there. And they called the police also. The police took the gun. Reporter the investigation is ongoing and they wouldnt disclose what was taken during the robbery or confirm the eyewitness accounts. The 77yearold victim suffered life threatens injuries and remains in the hospital. Its shocking but it wasnt anything we expected.
