Governor brown released a statement saying ann and i are deeply saddened to learn about the tragic loss of officer camilleri. We join his family, friends and entire california Highway Patrol in mourning his death and honoring his sacrifice. Were learning more today from the friends who knew officer camilleri about his life of faith and service. Lee martinez is in tracy tonight where the officer lived with his wife and three young kids. We have a very heart broken community in tracy tonight. The procession we can hear the sirens approaching. Were at fry memorial funeral home. This is where his body is going to be brought. If you take a look here, we have officers standing by. We have Community Members also, neighbors, who have come out. They are lining the streets to watch this procession and, again, we hear it approaching and it sounds as if its just up the street, but, again, we just have a very heart broken community. Andrew camilleri worked in hayward, but he lived here in tracy and his family is just devastated from what we hear from the pastors at his church today and they say all their hearts are collectively broken. [ sirens] not long ago, Andrew Camilleri fulfilled a dream to become a california Highway Patrol officer. Tragically, officer camilleri died while on duty Christmas Eve. He was supposed to be home the next morning with his family for christmas. Officer camilleri and his family have been attending Mission City Church for more than seven years. The churchs pastors say both andrew and his wife, roxy, served in youth minutes triandan ministry and andrew also played base with pastor. We would nod and say great job andrew or something would connect us as musicians. Kind of had this coolness about him and he was a chill guy, but he loved to just have fun. He was nutty. He was crazy and him and roxy both are just amazing people to be around. In just the last few years, he made a Career Change to fulfill a long time dream of becoming an officer. Its something that he had on his heart to do since high school. It was a dream for him. And i think just at the place of life that they were at, they just went all in. Around tracy, Andrew Camilleris death devastated many who knew him. An employee at rallys confessed once had a dui and be careful as night. We had a conversation about dui and being safe out there and a conversation about what people do that they dont take responsibility for what they are doing. He sees officer camilleri as a selfless hero, but want people to know behind the badge, he was a gentle family man. He was a selfless dad. He would do anything for his kids and such a hands on dad. Though his life is cut short, they say he achieved the dream and family he always wanted. I think sometimes the greatest tragedy is a wasted life and andrew didnt waste his. [ sirens] officer Andrew Camilleri is now home in tracy. His procession has just arrived here at the funeral home. We see the cars lining up right now. You can see we have officers standing by. We have family members and Community Members here. This is a deeply moving tribute to an officer who was greatly loved by the community. We do know that starting tomorrow at 11 00 in the morning in west sacramento, theres going to be a bell toll ceremony for officer camilleri at dchp academy. That will be at 11 00 in the morning. We dont know yet any of the funeral arrangements for the officer as well. We can hear the emotion in your voice and we know how emotional the procession has been. You can see a lot of people, spectators, members of the community in the background. What are they all saying . What are they thinking about this procession about this particular officer that has died in the line of duty there in tracy . Its very quiet. Im sorry, i didnt mean to get emotional. When i saw everyone with their hands over their hearts, i saw tears coming out of people, its hard not to get emotional watching this and talking to the pastors today who knew him and even the young man who worked at the raleighs supermarket, having a brief conversation with him, he touched everybody. It wasnt just the badge and honor he bee stowed on the community and bestowed on his family and community, he was just a very wonderful human being. He really lived his life the way his service meant to that he was there for his family. He was there for his friends. He was just a wonderful guy. Hearing from people that knew him best, i cant help but get emotional talking about it because he just seemed like somebody that you would want to know and it really is terribly sad that it has happened to this family who has such strong ties in the community. Just picture those he was three young kids. From what we understand, his wife didnt tell them that their daddy had died until after they opened presents on Christmas Morning. I just cant even imagine the brave face that she had to put on. Its interesting too how you get emotional there when you are close. I drove down to the chp office in hayward where he worked out of and i was fine until i pulled in the parking lot. As soon as you pull into the parking lot, you see all the officers parked there and the flowers in front. You just get really emotional. Its really something when you see it up close like that. Especially when you know he was out there trying to protect everybody else and this is how he passed. It really just rocked this community and ive tbhorkd tracy for many worked in tracy for many years. Its a very tight community. Its a old town. People seem to know each other still. This has really affected a lot of people. Wellloved and respected man. We send prayers to his family, colleagues and friends and everyone who knew him. Lee, thank you. The amount of snow in the sierra looks drastically different than this time last year. The average elevation where snow turns to rain is getting higher and ktvu meteorologist mark demayo fiewnd out this may be found out this may be a shift to a new normal. The sierra winter attracts millions of visitors every year. Fix the elevation signs lead the way along interstate 80 a big change has emerged a big change has emerged in a small amount of time. This gas station has been a popular pit stop. The current owner has been shoveling snow here for over four decades. On this december day, there was no snow clear. I see a lot of rain where as it will wash up during the summer. Earlier storms this year for example, weve gotten three, four inches of rain and a series of storms and hardly any snow. His unscientific observations may be backed by signs. Something bigger is happening. Middecember christmas, we generally hope to not see all this shrubbery. Benjamin ascientist with the desert a scientist with the Desert Research in reno made his drive to the mountains to see they are lacking snow. The headlines are jumping out of a recent study he worked on. In the last 10 years the average elevation where snow turns to rain has jumped dramatically. Weve seen in a 10year period theres been a different level in elevation from putting chains on your car around baxter, now you do it around frisco. It surprised researchers studying snow levels. They looked at radar and weather station sites. While there are short term fluctuations, the long term trend may be pointing up. This is totally consistent with the concerns we have with ongoing Climate Change. The two main culprits may be found to our west. Rising Ocean Temperatures and development of more Atmospheric River stormy vents. Both link to Climate Change. 50, 60, 100 years, you look out to the mountains here, is there a chance the snow level could be the average snow level above Donner Summit . Certainly, and i think that is one of the largest concerns both for people who enjoy winter recreation, but even more so for water resource management. The cold winter storms are important. They blanket the sierra with snowfall eventually melting away into our water supply. The warmest storms may not produce any snow. They produce rainfall. Possibly too much rainfall. That could lead to big flooding concerns. It sets up a perfect scenario for a couple big storms with 10,000 foot snow levels with rain on everything and bring in a lot of warm, moist air and very windy conditions to produce a lot of snow pack melt through rain on snow. As you can see with this threestory lodge, the snow was almost to the top. Some of our lifts needed to be dug out. Matt peterson recalls legendary snow season one year ago. Its one of many resorts that relies on a powerful snow making system to cover their runs. Weve invested into a pond cooling system and what it does is it cycles the water up through fountains and it cycles the pond and it gets the water down by two to three degrees colder. That cooler water gets fund into the lines to create high quality snow blasted over the mountain. The importance of snow making will only increase if the cold stormy vents become less frequent. Researchers admit the 10year sample size is tiny on the long term scale of Climate Change. The Study Suggests a stronger monthoring system to track few Monitoring System to track future changes. For now, the current snap shot of lower elevations may be a preview of what winters could look like down the road. Lets bring in our meteorologist right now. It almost seems like theres no normal anymore. You look at last season. They were skiing until july. Exactly. Now this season i guess is it ok skiing . When you get to 5,000 feet, you are not seeing much snow. 6,000 feet, you see some snow. As far as the epic winter in the sierra, its not happening and whats fascinating about the story you think of Climate Change in small increments, but when you when they are tracking a 1,200 feet elevation change in snow in just 10 years, people are saying i remember we used to have snow at 3,000 and 4,000 feet and already big jump. Thats why we went up there and talk talked to the ski resorts talked to the ski resorts. This could be a new norm and they have to prepare for that as we this season there is not much snowfall at the lower elevation and years to come possibly as well. As far as the bay area, its hard to believe its december out there. Take a look at the highs this afternoon. 50s and 60s. 61 and 62 to 64 degrees this afternoon. Did they talk specifically at all about what it was like actually fighting that thomas fire . There were times when the wind gusts were so strong that pretty much all they could do was just stand by and watch. I asked them about that because this was such a long deployment from two to three weeks and thats what they pointed out. They said the fire behavior was so erratic that is what they are going to take away.
