Republicans abandoned plans to vote. The gop was hurrying to pass a measure before budget rules kick in september 30th. Allowing democrats to filibuster. The three republican senators announced they would vote no and that was enough to kill the bill. Polls showed the measure to unravel oe obama care was unraveled. Today americans breathe a sigh of relief because the health care of millions has been protected and preserved. President trump and Congressional Republicans are now turning to tax reform but some democrats say a new tax code can wait until a true bipartisan effort to stabilize the Affordable Care act is completed. President trump was fired up today addressing a long list of controversies from north korea to players kneeling at nfl games to his administrations response to the disaster in puerto rico. Jana katsuyama here with the latest. Reporter President Trump not happy with repeal and replace losing votes. Now hes moving on to tax reform. Up next here, fire in the Oakland Hills on a red flag day. See how fire crews attacked an exposed hillside and saved homes from being burned. And that red flag warning is still in effect this evening and tomorrow. So well talk about the potential for increased fire danger. And 10 30 wearing kilts for a cause. See why two friends dressed like this every day of september. Two knuckle heads were able to put a check for thousands of the dollars into the hands of a researcher. Dozens of homeowners in the hills are breathing a sigh of relief tonight. A fire burned close to their homes. As rob roth tells us fire crews responded quickly battling the flames from the air and from the ground. Plumes of smoke billowed up the hillside heading toward homes. The fire broke out around noon in the old rock quarry off edwards avenue. It quickly went to four alarms. Some 80 firefighters attacked the fire on the ground. But it was the air drops from calfire that seemed to make a big difference fast. They were dead on with their accuracy into moderate and low and almost completely frame front. They were phenomenal. They were in my opinion we couldnt do this without them today. The first concern was the safety of people. Authorities evacuated residents from 100 homes near the smoky area. Many of them live on campus drive. Right now im just worried about the safety of my animals i have two dogs. So weve been told were not allowed to go up the street or to do anything they will not let us do anything so were stuck here. Reporter those who tried to get to their homes were turned away. People who are home were ordered to leave immediately. It looked pretty bad. You know i kind of grabbed a little bit of change of clothes, some water and just got out of dodge. My phone and just got out. Reporter the fire chewed up 22 acres of dried vegetation and steep terrain. Firefighters quickly seemed to get the upper hand. The cause of the fire is under investigation. But the fire chief said it all went smoothly and that helped keep the fire benign. No one was hurt, no homes burned. It was a very well coordinated response. Firefighters will be here overnight to make sure there are no flair ups. As those flames came up the canyon homeowners in the path of the fire were told to evacuate. And several of them told ktvus tom vacar they were really impressed by the Quick Response from fire crews. Firefighters knew the Oakland Hills can be brutally unforgiving once a fire could get better. Chopper after chopper, jet powered large tanker after tanker. Dropped load after load after load of retardant and water on the hot sometimes exploding flames. Some of the homes surrounding the canyon were evacuated while others were told to prepare to leave while others tried to get home to retrieve irreplaceables. If it came over that ridge. This canyon would have exploded. And all of these houses would have been gone. Every one of them. The way the fire was heading toward the culdesac, kind of threatening the area they asked us to be ready to evacuated. From the keller side and campus side was blocked. So i parked my vehicle and got on foot. Reporter the collective reaction to the response was unanimously positive. Stunningly amazing. I dont want to hear any more critics of the Oakland Fire Department or the Police Department because they showed upped showed up when we were in danger. They did a good job controlling the fire as quickly as they can. Reporter firefighters were able to confine the fire to the south side of the canyon and thats very good. Because when you come to the north side of the canyon where im standing you will notice theres all kinds of trees and shrubbery and other things that are very burnable behind me. And right behind them, homes, lots of homes in this neighborhood that could have so easily been lost had the fire gotten out of control. Tom vacar, ktvu news. Bill martin is here. This is peak fire season right now in the bay area. It is. And that red flag warning that was in place today stays in effect now for the north and east bay hills and it stays in effect throughout tomorrow. Conditions that we saw today will be duplicated tomorrow. So it was a high fire danger day especially in the hills. Tomorrow it will be as well. Temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s. Humidities and you know 18, 20 range with winds maybe 25miles anhour. So its high fire danger time of year. And once we get past tomorrow, things slip around a little bit. The jet stream is going to do this deal where right now its a rip of High Pressure. Next week this trough wants to show up which is an opposite type of weather. Its not warm. This could change everything. That is next week in the meantime we have a very warm day in store. No fog at the coast right now. Temperatures are generally going to end up tomorrow where they were today. That means low 90s, and even some mid90s in the warmest spots especially inland. 75 right now in fairfield. 75 in fairfield at this time of night. That was warm. Thats 15 degrees warmer. Another warm day. Theres no fog at the gate. Temperatures are going to be warm to hot, red flag warning remains in effect through five 5 00, big changes after that. San francisco has opened a number of cooling centers to help people beat the heat. Most residents and many businesses dont have air conditioning. But with temperatures expected to hover in the 80s or 90s over the next couple of days the city has designated six Public Libraries that have air conditioning as cooling centers. Admission will be free at six city pools through sunday. We urge people to take precaution when the weather is predicted to reach about 85 degrees. Partly because its hard to predict exactly how hot it will get and also because there are so many people we care for in the community who are vulnerable. Over the Labor Day Weekend three people died in San Francisco from what were described as heat related causes. Another big name in the nba is switching teams. An old friend is now joining lebron in cleveland. A victory for womens rights. In the last country on earth that still bans women from driving. And santa clara city leaders divided over a weeknight curfew at levis stadium. A compromise and why residents arent budging. A heated debate at the Santa Clara County meeting over calls to extend the citys curfew for weekend concerts. The 49ers say singer ed sherin cancelled his planned concert because of the 10 00 p. M. Curfew. Thats right the concern is more acts will follow and it will set a bad precedent. I just stepped out of this meeting and right now its Public Comment so people are voicing their opinions. Next week cold play is scheduled to perform the vice mayor wants to temporarily lift the 10 00 p. M. Curfew but faces opposition. Reporter inside santa clara city hall, representatives at odds with santa clara city leaders over the citys 10 00 p. M. Concert curfew. The feud reignited after grammy winning artist ed sherin cancelled in next years events. Were disappointed because were in business of entertaining people. But this is an example of what happens when things get caught up in politics. Reporter the city will lose 80 million in funds. They want the city to consider allowing concerts several times a year to run an hour later. Acts will go elsewhere if the curfew sticks. I think this is a bad public policy. I think this is political theater. Reporter cold play is scheduled to perform at levis stadium next wednesday night. Last month the 49ers requested a curfew extension city leaders voted it down. Both u2 and beyonce broke the curfew before. Council members dont understand why artists cant follow the curfew. Artists want to start later for theatrical purposes. Some residents want to keep it that way. People have work the next day. People have kids that are going to school the next day. Its really important that we stick to the law. That we follow the law. Reporter cold play is expected to go past the 10 00 p. M. Curfew next week. And if they do there will be a 750 fine as for ed shirin. Hes in talks to perform at at t park which has an 11 00 p. M. Curfew. No decisions are supposed to be made tonight but if that changes i will let you know. The city of San Francisco is the first u. S. City to hit Credit Reporting Company equifax is a lawsuit. Dennis herr era filed suit accusing equifax of failing to protect the data of californians. The company declined to comment on the litigation. The suit came hours after Richard Smith stepped down in his announcement smith said he is retiring immediately. On wall street today stocks ended the day with little change. Hes not wearing pants right now. True. Its a lot of confused looks and a few appreciative honks. Yay. He was honking at me not you. Shut up. Reporter but make no mistake they love the attention. I love a kilt. Discovered them seven years ago. Greatest garment known to man. Ive been in the fire service for 27 years now and i too enjoy a lovely kilt especially in september. Reporter jason and justin have been friends for several years now and its easy to see why they get along. Its the cop and fireman. The old joke, constantly locking horns. Who has the better job . I do. I do. They pay me to ride a motorcycle. Everybody loves a fireman. Beneath the humor is a common desire to help. One day while at the highland games these two friends had an idea. We were honestly just standing there swaying in the breeze as one does in a kilt and that was where this whole charity started. Reporter and thats how kilted to kick cancer was born. When we walk in in a kilt everybodys eyes turn and they have that one question. Whats with the kilt. We realized we could use that awkward conversation of men of a certain age about Prostate Cancer. We want them to talk to their relatives about what their history is and their relatives because its genetic. It is required for them to wear a kilt other than at the job. I will show up at the fire house in a kilt. I get the same thing. Nice skirt, love your dress. Reporter theres something about the guy at the bar in a kilt that gets people talking. People say the kilt is just a gimmick i say exactly but were talking. Reporter the first year they raised 30,000 and gave it to two nonprofits focused on fighting cancer. The next year they formed their own nonprofit and raised the kilted army. To date they raised 50,000 and the money goes directly to researchers. Two knuckle heads in kilts were able to put a check of 18,000 into the hands of a researcher and that was the seed money for study that went on for a year. They made countless discoveries. As they strived each year to raise more they found victory in each conversation. Youre wondering, youre wondering. There you are. September is Prostate Cancer awareness month. Perfect, you know what your score is. I do. Excellent. Perfect. One in seven men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. One in 75 will be killed by it. One in five is too many. It catches people off guard. Thats a good way of cracking our curiosity. We did not cofounded skirted to kick cancer. If you wear anything under a kilt its considered a skirt. We made Claudine Wang blush. It took only a little convincing to get my photographer greg to sign up too. They let him borrow what they call a starter kilt and he wore it while he shot the video for this entire story. He got at least one appreciative honk and truth be told, he really didnt want to give it back. You like my kilt. Yeah, i do. Seems the kilted army may have just gained another soldier. Claudine wong, ktvu fox 2 news. Rocking the kilt. A starter kilt. Those guys are just priceless. Great personalities. This saturday, jason and justin will be celebrating the ends of their fund raising campaign. Theyll be doing it in danville. I cant wait to talk to greg about what it was like wearing the kilt. And cancer survivors will be invited to sign a banner. Tracking that red flag warning, thats still in effect for the north and east bay hills. For lack of a better word, shame on them. Its something that we done want to see people out there. And in particularly, something that children can get ahold of. Its not something i think is right for a community. Reporter the case is being reviewed by the Alameda County authorities. Now to Southern California where firefighters are battling a wildfire in anaheim that has burned a home and big rig. The fire broke out between anaheim and corona and has charred 2,000 acres. The so called canyon fire spread quickly and is now threatening some 300 homes. The flames are burning along the county line between river side and orange county. Fire crews say they are making progress. More than 1,500 firefighters are on the scene. The cause of this fire still not known. Warmed up today a few degrees. Temperatures around the bay. We had a couple of low 90s and inland we had a few 90s. You will notice that. Microclimates, especially bay in the inland gets washed out. Here we have 91 in concord. It doesnt happen very much but when we get an environment like we have now. Everybody has equal opportunity to warm. Everyone more so at sea level. If you get further down in oakland you will get a better shot of having warmer temperatures. The closer to sea level you get the reason pacifica didnt get 90 is because the ocean temperature is around 60 degrees right now. Bay temperatures are warmer than that. Dry conditions, low humidity. 15 . And wind gusts to about 25 miles per hour. So thats the story for tomorrow. The red flag warner having similar to today. Heres what we have. Big ridge of High Pressure but you see it starting to kink here right. Thats the beginning of this thing breaking down and creating a trough. Potentially off the west coast. And that occurs as we get into next week which would be a flip flop in weather conditions from fire danger to maybe a little rain. Maybe. We have no fog to talk about. We have temperatures running above the average. 70 right now in livermore. 75 in san jose. Gosh all warmer than last night. 14degrees warmer in fairfield. So the air is still sinking. Beautiful shot out there this evening. And clear and crisp. The air quality has been good. Thats because theres been enough of a northeast and north wind thats helped give you the red flag warning but also mixing up the atmosphere so the air quality is a lot better than you would typically get High Pressure pattern because theres some wind. If it was real stagnant high. The commute would stick around but theyre not theyre getting blown out and mixed in with upper levels. Forecast highs tomorrow. You will see 80s or oranges. Yellows are 70s. Its just a broad brush. You get 90s in concord. Its going to be the same day we had today basically. Fall will start to pull in at the coast probably thursday night. Yeah thursday night into friday. That marks the beginning of that significant change that well be talking about. As you look at the forecast highs for tomorrow. You will see theyre in the mid 90s. You see that cooling beginning on friday with fog back at the coast. Its going to be fine. Its just been a pretty warm run of weather. And red flag warnings in almost october is the last thing you need. So that will go away tomorrow and then it should go away for the coming week. Bill, thank you. Sure. Coming up on the 11 00 news. Didnt get anything on the throw still good enough. We have for quite some time followed the dancing and coaching career of Alonzo Carter. Got a little surprise today. They thought they were showing up for a little recorded film shoot. It turned out to be live with ellen. Hi everybody. Yeah. How is it going . Aaaah. Hi. I think they were just a little bit excited. The taped segment was actually live on Ellen Degeneres the show. She donating 25,000 to coach Carters Charity foundation called beyond football. Last year not bad with the bulls he averaged 18 points a game. We have arrived at that time of the evening where you must check this out. Kind of giving it up to the fans in this segment as its another chris davis of the os. Deep into the right center field stance home run. Fans threw it back on the field. Watch Andrew Mccutchen keep an eye on this throw. He throws it over the bleachers. Looks like he barely put any effort into it. And it goes into the Allegheny River and a fan jumped in and swam after it. I love this. Morales of the jays throwing his bat accidentally in the stands. That gentleman grabs it. Then he shows off the bat. You have to love it. Hopefully they let him keep that ball. There were some good plays tonight in the major leagues for the yankees its wilson ramos who thought he had a grand slam for tampa bay and look at aaron hicks.
