This comes after a Court Victory and favor of sanctuary cities. Reporter hugs on the floor of the state Assembly Moments after lawmakers passed a bill that was according to its author written in response to President Trump and his promise to step up deportations of people in the country illegally. This sends a clear message to the Trump Administration and to california. We value inclusivity and diversity. Reporter californias sanctuary state built limits the sharing of information between police and federal agents. Local and state officers cannot ask about immigration status or be deputized as immigration agents. However, democrats agreed the state prison system would be exempted from most of the requirements. The Assembly Vote was 4924 along party lines with republicans in vocal opposition. The only think this bill provides a sanctuary for is dangerous criminals. I think its ironic to have the state of california or the agency heads of california willfully advocating the violation of federal law. Reporter earlier in the day, a judge in chicago ruled against the Trump Administration and an order imposed by attorney general sessions requiring sanctuary cities to cooperate with immigration agents in order to get federal funding in the form of Public Safety grants. The judge said sessions had exceeded his authority and the order would impose irreparable harm on cities that refused to cooperate. That case was brought by chicago but impacts other jurisdictions nationwide including Santa Clara County and San Francisco which have also sued the white house. I think it reinforces that we are following the law and that the president and attorney general Jeff Sessions are trying to get counties across the country to violate the civil rights of the people who live in their communities. Reporter San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued a statement saying we applaud the Court Decision that the u. S. Attorney general lacks the authority to impose these new conditions on Law Enforcement grants. The Trump Administration is playing politics with Public Safety. Definitely. One of the goals of the festival is to highlight filmmakers, tell stories from a different perspective. Whether its the United States are outside i can draw on an example of one of our films which is called last days in havana. Its a story of two men, one who was dying but trying to live his life to the fullest.
